What are some good series of books for young adults?

Q. I like books with action, romance, and I like it to be about people close to my age which is 14. I also don't feel like reading a book that is too realistic. I have already read twilight, harry potter, the clique, maximum ride, unfortunate events series, the luxe, and I think that's it. So what are some books that are really good for you? oh yeah, I don't want any vampire series recommendations, I have read too much about vampires!

A. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: Set in the future in a country that requires two kids from each of its twelve districts to be sent into an arena to compete in the Hunger Games. To lose is to die and there can be only one winner. Katniss volunteers to go in place of her younger sister with no hope of ever coming home. A very suspenseful, deep, thought-provoking story.

Peeps by Scott Westerfeld: a vampire story, but not. Vampirism in this book is an STD that turns you into a flesh-eating beast.

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray: Gemma is sent to a boarding school after her mother's death where she learns about a very dark and dangerous power that she has.

Beastly by Alex Flinn: a modern day Beauty and the Best with a twist.

The Mediator by Meg Cabot: Suze is a girl who can see ghosts and consequently falls in love with the very hot one living in her bedroom. Hilarious and sarcastic at the same time as being dark.

Sucks to be Me by Kimberly Pauley: When sixteen-year-old Mina is forced to take a class to help her decide whether or not to become a vampire like her parents, she also faces a choice between her life-long best friend and the boy she has a crush on versus new friends and possible boyfriends in her mandatory "vampire lessons."

You Are So Undead to Me by Stacie Jay: Megan Berry, a Carol, Arkansas, high school student who can communicate with the Undead, must team up with her childhood friend Ethan to save homecoming from an army of flesh-hungry zombies.

Thicker than Water by Karla Jablonski:Coping with her mother's cancer makes seventeen-year-old Kia feel out of place everywhere until she is drawn into the goth-vampire club scene, where she finds acceptance and one gorgeous, popular guy who might offer escape.

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantasky:Seventeen-year-old Jessica, adopted and raised in Pennsylvania, learns that she is descended from a royal line of Romanian vampires and that she is betrothed to a vampire prince, who poses as a foreign exchange student while courting her.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld:In Tally's world, a 16th birthday brings an operation, transforming one from a repellent Ugly to an attractive Pretty. Turning Pretty is all Tally has ever wanted. Her friend Shay would rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally must make a terrible choice.

Bloodline by Kate Cary: It's been 35 years since the demise of Dracula. When 19-year-old John Shaw returns from fighting in World War I, he is haunted by nightmares--not only of the ravages of war, but of the brutal, almost superhuman feats of his commander, Quincey Harker.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryans:In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best, and the fence that protects her village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth must remain intact. After fence is breached, Mary's world is thrown into chaos, and she must choose between her village and her future.

Unwind by Neal Susterman: In a future world where those between the ages of thirteen and eighteen can have their lives "unwound" and their body parts harvested for use by others, three teens go to extreme lengths to uphold their beliefs--and, perhaps, save their own lives.

The Pact by Jodi Picoult: Until the phone calls came at 3:00 A.M. on a November morning, the Golds and their neighbors, the Hartes, had been inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone when their teenage children, Chris and Emily, began showing signs that their relationship was moving beyond that of lifelong friends. But now seventeen-year-old Emily has been shot to death by her beloved and devoted Chris as part of an apparent suicide pact -- leaving two devastated families stranded in the dark and dense predawn, desperate for answers about an unthinkable act and the children they never really knew.

What Happened to Cass McBride by Gails Giles: After his younger brother commits suicide, Kyle Kirby decides to exact revenge on the person he holds responsible. Cass McBride has only a walkie talkie to save her when she is buried alive.

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher: When high school student Clay Jenkins receives a box in the mail containing thirteen cassette tapes recorded by his classmate Hannah, who committed suicide, he spends a bewildering and heartbreaking night crisscrossing their town, listening to Hannah's voice recounting the events leading up to her death

Maximum Ride by James Patterson: After the mutant Erasers abduct the youngest member of their group, the "birdkids," who are the result of genetic experimentation, take off in pursuit and find themselves struggling to understand their own origins and purpose.

Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan: Darren Shan is an ordinary schoolboy who enjoys hanging out with his three best friends. Then one day they stumble across an invitation to visit the Cirque Du Freak, a mysterious freak show. As if by destiny, Darren wins a ticket, and what f

Can someone update me on what's happened on One Life to Live and General Hospital?
Q. I haven't watched since late last fall when Starr's baby died and Emma was born on GH.
Can someone update me on what's happened since then?

A. on One Live To Live
Star got taken hostage by someone named Nick that Todd knew and used to work with. But she got away[ [with Todd's help] Nadily and Jard figured out that Jessica's baby is Star's had all the prove [DvD, finger print, strand of hair ec]t but they burned it because they don't want to hurt Jessica anymore. Lansten has a cusin that lives with her now but she likes Lansten's bf Marco" so when Lensten wasn't there won time she kissed him but he didn't know it was her at first [sorry don't no her name] so then Lansten found out she was pissed. Star and Cole are slowly figuring out that their baby is NOT" dead because their baby couldn't of died from the blood type Cole is 0- and so is Star. John is still trying to fined the person that stabbed Blaher. He broke into someone's appartment and got the kife that she was stabbed with but he just picked it up so his finger print was on there and the police found out so they don't know what to think.

GH Micheal [sonny's oldest if i didn't spell his name right] is in a coma from a gun shot that hit him in the head. by Ean Devlen ordered to kill Sonny by Cludia [jonny's sister] she came back. Micheal was in the coma for about a year and he is slowly starting to wake up [like you'll see him move his hand or somthing when someone leaves] Carly is preg o but she won't tell Jack's because it's dangerous for her and the baby. she was walking yo the stair's to go to her bedroom or something she got disy and fell back hitting her head. and OMG Iana's BACK" [she's Nicolas's evil grandma she is VERY mean] o and Emily died from somone chocking her to death at a party so now there is this look a like ecxpt the hair her's is blond her name is crap i don't remember! Gary's back [Jack's brother] he supposely died in an explosion on a boat that he set. he was black mailing Claudia with takes and each one them he would say she was involed with Micheal's shotting. O and Claudia got married to Sonny [sonny wanted his power back that was the only way.] Roban has postpartum depession that means she doesn't think she is a good mother and would be better of without it. [Carly has it maybe a year or 2 ago] Roban does have a baby. and i think that's it love ya byee lol

Is this a good way to start a book?
Q. I woke and stretched at dawn-
Is this a good sentence to start with? With her describing everything after the first sentence, about her life and what her bedroom looks like? Or does that type of story bore the reader?
Dialogue before description or description before dialogue?
Please give me your opinion~

A. I always like description or dialogue to start. So, like:

1. As the sun began to rise over the hills, a golden glow crept towards the window. Light washed over the girl's face, and a little frown creased her forehead before she opened her eyes....
2. "Sara! Wake up!" shrieked Jessica, smacking the sleeping figure of her sister with a pillow..

I think "I woke" is a little too abrupt to open the story. Start to set the scene, and then wake up... There's my input :)

How to teach a child who has a very low attention span?

Q. Hello, my son's attention span is very short. He is a C average student in the 6th grade and often has difficulty finishing his school work. I was wondering did any one have this problem with their child and what were some ways I can do as a parent to help teach him how to focus. I refuse to give him medication for there are so many side effects I dont want to harm my child. Please help.

A. We struggled with this with my daughter who has ADHD, ODD and dyslexia, and we were not keen in giving her medication either, but we agreed with her consent to give it a try, but I would only give it to her through the school term, and would not give it to her through school holidays.

But we found having a good routine helped her, along with giving her one instruction at a time, when we wanted her to focus on the task at hand, we also turned the t.v off or any other distraction off, when doing homework. Often she'd shuffle her feet or sit on her hands when concentrating, but we'd let it go, as she said it helped her concentrate, and as an adult she still does this.

Thankfully she was not disruptive child, but she did fidget, wriggle and chat when in classroom. When she was 15 she asked if she could stop taking the Ritalin, we agreed but if she started to get into trouble for talking or fidgeting in the classroom then she'd have to go back on it.

Tips that can help;
Routines really do help, especially when getting them ready for school, bed and homework

Have set area for him to do his homework, with good lighting, comfortable chair, plenty of room for text books etc, have pens pencils and paper handy too, and away from distractions e.g tv

Have clear set rules of behaviour and the consequences for breaking rules, and follow through with consequences for misbehavior or rule breaking.

Be fair and consistent at all times, many kids with ADHD/ADD are confused when parents are not consistent in behaviour or are disorganized themselves, but tell their child off for being disorganized.

Give one instruction at a time, and break task into small manageable chunks

Praise for good behaviour or completing a task however small it maybe

Rewards & incentives to help enforce good behaviour, and if you have promised a reward follow through with it.

Pick you arguments, there are times you just need to walk away (I learnt this the hard way, my daughter was/is the queen of goading)

Time out, have a set area for time out, preferably not their bedroom and not the lounge room where they can play with their toys or watch tv. My daughter would sit in a chair in the kitchen, away from the tv etc, which would make her think about why she was there.

Play time, as you know kids with ADD/ADHD are very active and need to be allowed time to run around, ride their bike, play in the back yard etc. And doing this before homework, can actually help in focusing on their home work.

Daily task chart, write a list of set chores he needs to do each day, e.g make bed, tidy room, help with dishes, put rubbish out etc, and if he does them, offer a reward for the end of the week, such as going to the pool, park, cinema etc.

Don't be afraid to ask for help, when you feel a bit over whelmed,

Self esteem, to help build his self esteem find and encourage him to participate in his favourite activities, and it also help with focusing to, especially if he is into team sports, swimming etc.

Ideas for bedroom redecorating?
Q. I'm going to be redoing my bedroom soon, and I need some ideas. I'm a 13 year old girl, so hope that helps some!
I'm going to be redoing my bedroom soon, and I need some ideas. I'm a 13 year old girl, i love blue and brown and i LOVE music. so hope that helps some!

A. Start by choosing bedding that you like. Take a color from it or chose a coordinating color for the walls. If the bedding has a theme (like tropical) decorate with those types of accessories.I could do a better search if I knew what size bed you have. For instance if your bed is full or queen there are probably more options than if we are looking for just twin. Here are some sites where you can browse for bedding...

Is there a suite in Vegas that holds 5-10 comfortably?
Q. I'm going to Vegas with 5-10 girlfriends. We are on the search for a reasonable suite that will hold all of us comfortably. Preferably on the strip. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A. Definite problems...but possible solutions.

Yes, the hotels do have limits to how many people can "sleep" in a room...so, if you're trying to "squeeze" more than that into any rooms...you can't tell them at check-in..."we have 10 girls..please bring us 20 towels and 16 more pillows...okay?!?!?

What you CAN DO...is one of two other options...book more than one room (two, maybe three)...OR pay for a LARGER suite with two rooms/bedrooms and a large living room area...below are what I've done for family/friends before...and worked well...

Nearly all the SUITES change from having one or two beds...into having ONE KING ...but then have a sofa...so you can have some sleep in the King bed, request a rollaway bed, someone sleep on the couch (Usually one or two to a rollaway Max, and only one on a couch...most couches don't pull out/fold out. After you've checked in, housekeeping usually won't charge per night...in advance, reservations clerks are taught to add a per night charge..so sssshhhh early on.

*In "some" cases...you may find a suite with two queen beds...but VERY RARE...and you won't find one too close to a second for sure.

Better idea...regarding TWO "regular rooms"...but 'CONNECTING'' rooms...one with a king bed, the other with two queens are usually how they are set up...idea being one for parents the other for the kids...but in your case: King bed room with at least one rollaway and the other room with two queens...so...reasonable to get 8 with two per bed that way!!!

Depending on your budget...another option...specifically I know they have this at the MGM Grand (booked it many times in the past)...you can book a suite at the end of the hallway..about 1200 sq ft...has one King bed bedroom on each end and a HUGE living room, dining room table/chairs...and a bar/serving area (commonly used for "in-suite" parties...and plenty or room for at least two rollaways without objections from housekeeping!!! (they stand up on their sides during the day....Oh, and the wrap-around couch (if they still have that) can handle two people too...SO ...THIS CAN HANDLE 10 PEOPLE..."IF" you *spend that much money *can find it available when you come to town *would rather spend that much money to "crowd a huge suite" instead of booking 2-3 rooms instead....probably about the same money both ways...but the big suite does give you a party room, and on higher floors...an awesome view!!!

How do I find history or information on the Caldwell furniture company in Lenoir NC?

Q. I have an old bedroom set made by the Caldwell furniture company in Lenoir NC and I want to find out more about it. I have tryed searching but only get up to date information I want to know about the history of the company and maybe pictures of there older pieces to find out if what I have is worth anything. Any suggestions? Thanks

A. Your best bet would be to contact the company and ask if they would be able to provide you with that information. Most companies (though not all) will have some sort of "History of the company" type brochure that they will be happy to send to you. Perhaps in their current catalog.

What kind of paintings for bedroom with simple traditional furniture in light oak?
Q. The bedroom set is plain, but has a traditional oak feel and tri=fold mirror.
Any ideas for an imagery theme, other than roses/flowers?
My man has no particular ideas for this room, so I don't have much input there...
Thanks!

A. A collection of family photographs in ornate oak frames might be nice. Children's artwork can also be framed to add a happy feeling to the room. You can frame just about anything. Frame several pieces of color coordinating fabric and hang in a cluster on the wall. Go to a flea market to scout for old picture frames of various sizes and hang in a group, one inside of the other. Or, take one large frame and hang on the wall. Paint your own picture directly on the wall inside the frame. Check out this web site for more bedroom ideas.

Or, you could paint only one or two walls red, and use a red comforter.

And I think you should capitalize on your "rockstar" status;)

How can i find a safe decent apartment without going to see it?

Q. I am moving from Portsmouth, NH to Los Angeles. For obvious reasons i can't go ahead to look at anything before moving in. I need to have a place set up before i get there. Whats the best way to do this? can i trust photos? i prefer roommates as well because i most likely won't have a job at first. PLease help!!! thank you.

A. Reality check time. You can't trust photos, they can be quite deceiving. Almost every area in LA has both good and sketchy neighborhoods, even expensive cities like Santa Monica. You need to look at a unit, the neighbors, and the neighborhood, before you rent. Many people who move across the country do come out and look at where they're going to move, unless they have close friends or their company handle that for them. Or they stay in a corporate/short term rentals until they find someplace more permanent to live, but those tend to be expensive. Oakwood http://www.oakwood.com/

Another option is to come out here, check it out, and be willing to go home if it doesn't look like it will work out. You can stay in motels or hostels. Decent motels will start at $50 or more a night depending on location, hostels from about $20 up a night for a dorm situation. You can stay in a hostel from about 2 weeks to a month, depending on their policies. Some only take international travelers, most will want to see proof you are not local.
Hostels:
http://www.hostels.com/
http://www.hostelworld.com/
http://www.usahostels.com/
http://www.hilosangeles.org/
Google: Hostels, Los Angeles

Roommates can be a big hassle, you must have enough saved to pay the full rent in case they flake out. And think about it, what kind of person would let someone move in not knowing if you can actually pay? Someone sketchy. Here in LA, tenants are generally not allowed to sublet without permission of the landlord, yet they do it all the time, get busted (landlords keep their eyes on their property), and you are kicked out, sans your rent and deposit $$. Worst case, the roommate takes off, and the landlord holds you responsible for months of unpaid rent. If a landlord doesn't run your credit and rental history, put you on the lease, and maybe increase the rent, then you are likely involved in a scam. Homeowners cannot turn their homes into flophouses, there are occupancy laws, and neighbors will report to the authorities. Google: rental scam, rental scams Los Angeles

Landlords will want you to have a job. They can legally only take first and a deposit, so it's not like you can pay months in advance. You will need to have decent credit, no credit is not good credit. If you are under 21, it will be much tougher to find an apartment, landlords don't like to rent to under 21's, too much underage drinking, etc.

The job situation here is really bad, it may take from 4 - 6 months to find an entry level job, for many it takes much longer. Our unemployment is about the worst in the country. Another problem, minimum wage (about $1100 a month net) isn't enough to live on, it will cover your rent on a low end one bedroom, or a low end single and some food. That's it, literally. Having a roommate doesn't help much as legit places usually rent one bedroom per adult. So unless you have a profession that pays significantly more, LA isn't a good place to live.

I think you're not thinking this through. Do you know what kind of creepy people we have out here just waiting to take advantage of someone? Don't come out here until you're really prepared, with money to return home if necessary. Don't burn your bridges.

Good luck!

Any Nice and Cheap place to buy Furniture in N.H ?

Thnx in Advance.

NH: Who is responsible for pest control, landlord or tenant?
Q. One of the bedrooms in my apartment has become infested with bed bugs. The lease does not mention anything about extermination or pest control. The property management is telling me that I have to pay for all the fees, even if the bugs are found in other units of the building. So who is legally responsible in this case, the property management, tenant, or owner of the building?

Please site your source, if possible, so I can follow-up. Thank you!

A. If pest extermination is not specifically mentioned and the problem does not arise due to tenant issues (like not taking out your rubbish or poor hygiene issues) then a good argument can be made that the landlord has breached his obligation under the lease to provide for quiet enjoyment of the premises. This is generally a matter of contract law and will be considered as such if it ever goes to court. You paid good money for a place to live and the landlord has to provide a good place to live, etc., all as set forth in the details of the lease. To bring the matter to a head, you can call in and pay for the exterminator in the first instance and then send the bill to the landlord. If the landlord refuses, you may have the option of filing a small claim against the landlord or (depending on the terms of the lease) withholding that amount of money from the next rent payment. It may then become an issue if the landlord claims non-payment of rent and either serves you with a notice to quit or files a small claim action against you. Put everything about lack of habitability in writing to the landlord and be sure to save copies. Keep records of all your discussions with the landlord or property manager. You will need to be prepared to confirm that the infestation is not specific to your furniture but is an apartment-wide issue.

Where can I find a bed like this for my daughter ?
Q. Okay I am on my daughters account and she is really into Japanese culture. She showed me how she wants her room, and I thought a room makeover would be a wonderful Christmas present. The bed she wants is only on a website, and I don't like ordering furniture online, so no answers like Ebay please.
Thank you.

Here's the link:
http://www.haikudesigns.com/bedroom-furniture-sets.htm

She wants the floating platform bed.

A. Try walmart, here is a link to all the platform beds:

http://www.walmart.com/browse/Furniture/Bedroom-Furniture/Beds/_/Nh-3yc4Zaq90ZaqceZ1yzn9ll/Ne-aqxa?ic=48_0&ref=125874.184468+501454.4292504409&tab_value=172608_All&catNavId=102547&waRef=+501454.4292504409&catNavId=102547

I know you mentioned that you don't like ordering online, and I'm not sure if walmart actually carries any of these in the store, but you do have the option to have it sent to the store or to your home. But maybe you could go to your local walmart and check. These beds are very nice looking and very affordable then compared if you were to walk into a furniture store. My friend ordered one of these style beds off of walmart and had it sent to the store and it is very nice looking and made well. Hope this helps!!

Graceland Mansion? How are the rooms laid out?

Q. I am trying to find a map or guide on the internet that will show me the way the Mansion is laid out. Or some way to find out? I have searched through so many websites and images, and suprisingly I can find one.

A. Upon entering Graceland, the white staircase, filled with reflective mirrors, is directly in front of you. To the right is the Living Room with the adjoining Music Room, it is the first room to be presented on the tour. There are rails up prohibiting you to go fully into the Living Room and you can only see part of the Music Room which is hidden behind a doorway framed by vivid large peacocks set in beautiful stained glass. It was here in this doorway, in front of the stained glass that Elvis' casket was placed for the funeral held in his home. What you can see in the Music Room is a white baby grande piano and a old 70's style TV. The Living Room is almost imposing with its larger than life 9 foot solid white sofa that sits against the wall that overlooks Graceland's front yard. To your left is a white firplace, immaculant, everything perfectly displayed in its place. Here in the Living Room hangs the painting that was Elvis' last Christmas present from his father Vernon, also displayed here are photographs of Elvis' parents Vernon and Gladys Presley, Elvis and Lisa Marie. These rooms are then followed with a walk past the grand stair case to Elvis' parents room.

In Elvis's parent's bedroom once again white is the prominent color. A dramatic velvet looking dark purple bedspread drapes elegantly onto the floor at the foot of the queen size bed. The walls, dresser, bed and carpet are bright white. Once again a rail prohibits you from going directly inside the room, to your right is the closet, sealed with see through glass showing 4 or 5 of dresses Gladys' wore. To the left is a pink full bathroom, almost obscured from sight because of your velvet rope barrier.

Next the tour takes you into the dining room and the kitchen. The tour continues through the basement, where Elvis's media room with its three televisions can be viewed. A bar and billiards room can also be found. The tour continues back upstairs, through the famous Jungle Room. After the Jungle room, you exit the house to the backyard, past Lisa Marie's childhood swingset, to a small white building that served as his father Vernon's office. Through the office there is a small room containing a scale model of the home he was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. In what used to be an old smokehouse you come upon Elvis' shooting range. Down the sloping lawn, past beautiful horses grazing behind the neat white fences, you enter the "Trophy Room". Originally this space was just a sidewalk behind the house that Elvis had enclosed to store his many items of appreciation. Just inside is Elvis' famous gold lamé suit from his early years.

The Living Room, GracelandThere is much to see every where at Graceland, in the Trophy Room there seem to be few walls that are uncluttered with records, movie posters, old time memorabilia of lipstick and shoes, even a 1950's Elvis doll. The Trophy Room has everything from the three Grammy's Elvis won to Priscilla's wedding dress, Elvis' wedding tuxedo, Lisa Marie's toy chest and baby clothes to the infamous hall of Elvis' many gold records and awards. The Trophy Room then winds you down the halls through a display of his 68 Comeback, featuring his leather suit, his personal copies of his movie scripts, the costumes he wore in many of his movies and a few of his infamous "jumpsuits". Also in this room are all the awards and distinctions Elvis received. Also hanging on the wall is a display of the many canceled checks Elvis wrote to various charities.

Exiting the opposite side of the Trophy Room you are once again back outside on a sidewalk moving past more grazing horses, past immaculantly kept prfectly green lawns and past his still fully functioning stable of horses. Elvis's Racketball Court is next. The court now houses a display of Elvis' trademark sequined "jumpsuits".

Suggestions for bedroom colour(s) to match furniture etc...?
Q. Main bedroom: Consists of oak flooring, dark leather kingsize bed with large square stitched leather headboard and two dark rosewood chest of drawers. The bed with furniture takes up alot of the floor space.
Bedding, curtains/blinds need to be changed as well so I have basically a blank canvas.
I would like something dramatic instead of a white or cream but need help....can anybody suggest some good colour combinations?????

A. Browns, tans, blues and greens would look good, I think. First, find the comforter that you want to use and choose the paint color from it. Here are some I hope you like:

do you think i got a good deal or no?
Q. okay so i had been thinking about getting a bedroom set with a brand new mattress for a while so i was looking around for a good deal and i found what i wanted at ashley furniture. by the time i paid for everything i spent $3203.00. i'll write down the price of everything right now but first let me say that they were having a anniversary sale so everything was marked down in price and they had a promo for any mattress 1499 and over u get a free 32' sony bravia lcd tv or 15% off the mattress.

for that price i got my queen size headboard, foot board, rail for 246.00
stearns & foster queen size mattress n boxspring for 1499.99
media chest for 239.00
chest for 137.00
dresser & mirror for 305.00
plus my free tv that i upgraded too a 46'' for 500.00

tax for little over 200 and deliver for 40.00 which included a 50 mile drive too my house and they completely set everything up for me in my room.

i told my parents the other day and my mom insist that i got ripped off or i could of found a better deal and that i could of looked in the classifieds for a bedroom set but i want a new one for my self not a used one.

on that tv the sale price for the 32'' was $400 but they gave me the full price credit of $500 and 46'' sale price was $750 but i paid the the full $1000 price on it but since i got a $500 credit i bought a $1000 tv for $500.

no it's solid wood i check it out my older brother bought a bedroom set that was made of pressed wood and it broke in no time so i knew too make sure it was solid wood. besides i could'nt find my set on the ashley website so i found it on that otherone so maybe that's the problem?

A. laminated means that if there is a ding it will look like crap. it's not solid wood, it's painted pressed wood. a wet glass can bubble up the surface, beyond repair.
1400. for a matress is very high. i got an unbelieveably great serta for $700. you almost need a step stool to get in it.
two years ago, i got a gorgeous solid wood, hand carved, 6 foot high headboard, footboard, triple dresser, tall dresser, and, night stand, all for under 2500. the style is called buckingham. it's heirloom quality. i love it. dings aren't noticeable and easily covered with ol english.
after years of having a crappy looking pressed wood bdrm set, i really love this set. it will retain much of it's value for a long time.
you have to shop around. i'm sorry, i agree with your mom.

What colors and themes go well with oak and dark green?

Q. I am planning on moving into a pretty small apartment with my boyfriend and we're planning on using his bedroom set which includes a nightstand and two dressers. They are oak with a dark green finish on the top. I want our bedroom to still look open and light and somewhat feminine. Too many ideas out there for dark green would make the room a cave so I need some ideas to make it look like the perfect mix of man/woman without washing out the light and space. Any ideas?

A. The main thing you need to do is find bedding that lightens the dark green up. See if you like any of these:

I think I like the first one from Penney's best. It's not tooooo feminine but it will lighten up the space. If your boyfriend doesn't like what you choose, be sure to tell him that in order for you to be happy and relaxed in the bedroom, you need to decorate it and he does want you happy in the bedroom, doesn't he? LOL

I'm buying new bedroom furniture, what kind of wood should I look for?
Q. Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.
What about this furniture? Does it seem okay? http://www.mybobs.com/catalog/set_view.asp?packageid=585&room=bedroom

A. The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.
Hope this helps.
I like Says Me's dovetails and mortises!

How would I go about painting a finished piece of furniture? What kind of paint would I use?
Q. I have a nice bedroom set in great condition but I hate the color of it... (oak)
I want to paint it a dark chocolate brown color. What kind of paint would I use to do this? Interior paint?
And how would I prep the furniture beforehand?

A. If the furniture has a shiny top coat you will need to scuff that up first, then pick a really good primer. Kilz is great and on the side of the can tells you what surfaces it adheres to the best. Interior paint is fine because it wont be exposed to any outdoor elements ie: rain etc. Then pick your color and sheen of paint. (flat, egg shell, satin, semi-gloss or gloss.) The higher the sheen the more durable your paint will be.

Full bed or 2 twins for little girls sharing a room?

Q. My girls will be sharing a room, and when the youngest is ready for a big girl bed (they are 16 months apart), I need to know if we're going to set up bunk beds or a full-size bed to share. Their bedroom is not very big, so I thought bunks would save floor space, but then I also have to worry about falls and bunks are such a pain to change sheets on! Which do other parents recommend-- bunks or a full bed?

A. Full beds. I grew up sharing a full or queen size bed with my sisters and it wasn't every a problem. I would worry about falling out of the bunk beds at that young off an age. I won't let my 5 year old daughter sleep on the top of her bunk.

My husband is a crossdresser and I find it perverse inspite of trying to accept it?
Q. I found out about his cross dressing by chance. Inspite of reading up on it and doing a lot of online research, I am unable to come to terms with it.
I have not confronted him about it but I have hinted it couple of times. He knows that I know but is keeping mum.
I can't get this thing outta my head. I am very disturbed.
Can other wives in a similar situation tell me what they did?

A. To begin with: Just so you know who is talking, I am a crossdresser.

Your husband is probably very much in a keep it secret stage. Thus he is very reluctant to share with you let alone anyone else. You on the other hand need to have some questions answered. And you may not even be sure of what the questions are. This is where I hope I can help. Usually the questions are not so related to him but more as to how it affects you.

Question 1. Is he gay?
Answer: Most likely he is not. In fact 90 percent of crossdressers are just like your husband: married, straight men who just have a need to express a feminine side. Of course in today's society we often equate the crossdressing to equal homosexuality because of what we have been exposed to by media in the way of drag queens and those who are extremely campy. Crossdressing is a gender issue. Its a degree of how masculine vs feminine we feel. But it has very little to do with sexual preference.

Question 2. If you accept it are you gay? After all your husband enjoys dressing as a girl, so when you are with him, is it not like being with a girl?
Answer: No. As I have said to people when i am asked as similar question, what I wear is what i feel comfortable. But inside my panties... I am all man. I want to have heterosexual sex. and I only have interest in women... In your husband's case.. one woman: YOU. He is still a man, and he still has a penis and he wants to have sex with you in the usual way. He is no matter what he wears, still a man. You are not a lesbian.

Question 3. What will everyone else think? My friends, my family?
Answer: This is a subjective one. Some people will be horrified (mostly because they do not know enough about it, and only assume the worse). The majority of people you know, just won't care. and won't even think about it. Then there will be the few who are curious and interested and will want to know more. But before all that begs the question... how will these people find out? He certainly is not going to tell anyone... he can't even talk about it to you. You don't need to tell anyone? Its not like you go and tell your mother about everything you do in the bedroom? (I hope :) ). But for those that do find out, in general they won't say anything about it unless you are complaining about it. If you are supportive, and show that you and your husband are of one mind about this, they should just leave you alone.

Question 4. Why do you feel it is "perverse"?
Answer: Because it is hidden and is being kept hidden. When things are hidden like they are, you are going to feel like its something wrong and it needs to be hidden. your solution is to talk about it with your husband. You have to get it out in the open. Find out why he feels the need to crossdress and what it is that started him down this path. You both need more understanding and a LOT more communication. You might even be feeling a bit betrayed because he has been hiding this from you. And now you might be wondering what else he has been hiding from you. I'm pretty certain that this is it. it's a big deal especially to him. He is afraid that you will ridicule him and expose him. You have to remember that you are a partnership and that his secrets are yours and yours are his.

After all, here is a guy that you are already partners with, who would probably enjoy talking fashion with you, help paint each others nails, etc. Here is a guy that can appreciate what it means for a woman to get ready and pretty for her man. And between you both your intimate time can be augmented if you both accept the sensuousness that he will have as part of his feminine side. (Think of how soft and sensitive your skin is when its freshly shaved and lotioned.) Don't be afraid to set limitations too. For example: I don't ever dress when there are familiar children about.

And as an extra bonus, if he is wearing panties under his jeans all the time... just how likely is he going to want to take his pants off for any other woman. He will be a much more faithful husband this way. ;-)

Just so you know. I now have a girlfriend. She knows about my dressing and is an active participant. We do not hide it from each other or for that matter, anyone else. My family knows as does hers. There are no problems and we live happily and enjoy my feminine side as well as my masculine side.

And finally, may I suggest that you get and read a book called "My Husband Betty" by Helen Boyd.
Its an excellent book that describes a lot of what you are going through and how she dealt with it.

Hope this all helps.

How to decorate my old New Orleans house?

Q. I'm moving to a very old fashioned home in New Orleans. The house is not modernized at all. It still has window units for air conditioning in the Windows but so does a lot of homes down here. Some of the features are mantles in the bedroom and living room and a clawfoot tub in the bathroom. Iam not gifted in decor and since the house is not modern its a bigger challenge. The house is also a rental so I cannot make any major changes. Any ideas? Thanks.

A. You can mix so many wonderful elements together. I so love victorian, and colonials, but love my decor a bit modern. What I would do is mix new with old. For instance, I have very modern cubby like entertainment center and end tables, but have a vintage coffee table I refinished the same color as my other furniture. On top of refinishing the color, I replaced the knobs for the drawers. It looks fantastic! For my mantle I bought cute tea light holders, 4 smaller, round ones, and 3 larger round ones with crackled glass and set them up along the mantle from one small, one big, one small, etc. I've gotten so many compliments on it! Plus the ambiance looks great. Pair the room with some great curtains, if you're crafty you can make some or you can buy some. I LOVE the "Faux Silk Luster Crushed Curtain Panel Pair" from overstock.com, it's only $20 for a panel pair and is wonderful. It's not completely sheer, but doesn't block out too much light. It comes in plenty of different colors. I also have various plants around the room, I'm addicted to beautiful orchids. (The humidity there would be great for one!) For your bathroom, I would definitely keep the tub, I DREAM of owning a beautiful claw foot tub one day. I would keep the bathroom simple, add maybe a set of small mirrors or pictures. I would have matching dispensers and containers to keep soap, q-tips, etc in and to keep the counters more neat. You can pair with coordinating towels, and rugs. For your bedroom, pick something that you like, but it's soothing to you. I have a purple, black and white theme in my master. I do have a few framed butterflies that I hope to one day make a mural with. If I were you, I would have decor and a theme you enjoy for your rooms. I personally love butterflies, birds and owls and have a bit of each in each room, but without being overpowering.

Could severe childhood phobias be related to a past life trauma ?
Q. Has your child had one that was unexplainable? Did he/she talk about it?

A. None of my children exhibit this but I have one.

First, I have never liked turtle necks, tight collars, scarves or anything around my neck.

Then driving down Canal Street in New Orleans one day I got a flash of a past life - verified later by the intimate written history of the building. I remember distinctly being strangled from behind and remember the layout of the home where it occurred while never having set foot into it. My parents had locked me out for coming home too late one evening. I was 22 years old and was trying to get in through my bedroom window. This happened around the turn of the century so that would leave roughly 60 years between lifetimes.

I have had other experiences such as this where I remember a past life time but this is the only one that I have been able to verify. It was both spooky and satisfying.

The only other explanation for something like this is picking up on old thought forms.

So i need help about homes in australia?
Q. My family is considereing moving from the u.s to australia. And we are not to familiar with the country. hers what we want

We would like a decently populated area. around queensland. Not a small town but not a huge town.

We would like to be 30-45 minutes away from the beach or less. clean beaches.Preferably.

Good area. Good schools. Lots of things to do.

Fair weather. No storms or extreme heat.

Any suggestions? like what cities? and all that fun stuff

A. I live in Canberra but am a former Queenslander.

Housing
Most Australian housing vaguely resembles the California bungalow or the ranch house. There is usually only one floor and no basement. Typically houses built before about 1970 have 3 bedrooms, one bathroom. After that many houses were built with an "ensuite" which is a shower booth and water closet attached to the master bedroom with a full bathroom elsewhere. Kitchens generally are smallish but well appointed. Most houses do not have pantries or "dens".

Recently though land prices have risen while the cost of building has fallen so newer houses are larger and better appointed. I have just paid yearly land tax of $758 on an unimproved land value of $269,666. This tax would be the same whether the house was big, small or non-existent. This tax does not include water supply or sewerage charges.

Major cites and most medium to small towns have sewer systems and safe water supplies. Cable TV and mobile (cellular) phones in larger towns. There are up to 5 free-to air TV networks available, multiple AM and FM radio stations. The landline phones work.

As in the USA real estate values vary with locality. I've seen houses sell here recently for a million but they are at the top end of the local market. I live 20 minutes walk from a major employment centre and a large shopping mall. There is an elementary school five minutes walk away (set to close unfortunately) with a convenience store, small children's play area, sports ground, park, restaurant, local general practice medico nearby. There are Catholic and government high schools within twenty or thirty minutes walk.

A natural gas pipeline and a coaxial cable for phone, I'net and cable TV run past the door. Power supply is 240V 50Hz and reliable. It went off the other day as some work was being done - must have been off 8 minutes. That's the only power cut for months and the previous one lasted about as long. For more details on Australian power see the following site and follow the link for type I, from the Comment column.

http://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm

This city's population is about 310,000. The house is an older one with three bedrooms and one bathroom, separate garage, brick construction, tile roof, central heating on a gas furnace.

In Queensland houses do not have central heating or in many cases, provision for heating of any kind unless you live in a few places that are more elevated. These will be well over 2 hours from any beach.

There are a few towns along the Queensland coast that might suit you. Bundaberg, Maryborough, Gladstone, Rockhampton and Mackay have populations in the 30,000- 60,000 range and all have clean water, sewerage, reliable power and so forth.

However in all parts of Queensland except the southern highlands the climate is like that of Florida, gulf coast Texas or warmer. The further north you go the hotter it gets, about 1880 Rockhampton was described as the city of "sin, sweat and sorrow". Apart from that there are possible cyclones (hurricanes) which may rarely get south as far as Rockhampton.

We do not have things like tornadoes, they are pretty well confined to north America. There are storms as anywhere but they generally last 20 minutes with lightning and strong winds and then things settle down to rain for another hour. Sometimes big hail, but that might only happen every 5 to 10 years.

Mackay recently had severe flooding but nothing like Katrina in New Orleans . The Mackay flood was water rising then going down. That sort of thing happens once every 20 - 40 years in these places. Rain in these areas can be torrential, I have seen 3 inches in 30 minutes in Bundaberg, with another 3 in the following 90 minutes so there can be a problem with local flooding. If you are buying house or land, make sure it is moderately elevated and don't trust the real estate people (realtors) about this. Before buying, go to municipal offices, (shire, town or city hall) and ask for a flood map. Anywhere there is a collection of better looking or larger houses though will probably be on higher land. The eastern side of a hill is always a good buy.

Incidentally, Texas would fit into Queensland about 3 times, it is about 1600km (1000 miles) from Brisbane to Cairns and there is still hundreds of km to the furthest north..

There are several real estate dealers who operate nearly Australia-wide, look for websites for "The Professionals" and "LJ Hooker" among other reputable companies. In country towns you can get good houses for around AU$200,000 or less. It all depends on whether the population is growing and how much work there is. Where there is no work any more, I've heard of one whole village being sold for a few thousand, which was a local joke here a few years ago.

Work
Australia needs doctors and dentists for country towns. There is plenty of work in construction and mining. There are low-rise buildings going up or recently completed not far from the shopping mall I just mentioned. Same thing is going on in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and even in some of the larger country towns.

Income tax is "high" compared to the USA but lower than in many other countries. This is levied by the Federal Government. On a fairly typical salary of $65,000 you can expect to pay about $17,000 tax. This is taken from your pay every week or two weeks in small amounts. At the end of the tax year, you prepare a tax return setting out allowable expenses. If these are over certain amounts for certain things there will be a moderate refund. Mortgages cannot be claimed.

Another federal tax is the Goods and Services Tax. This is levied at 10% on all goods except fresh uncooked food. There are no other sales taxes on ordinary goods and this 10% is the same in all states.

A third federal tax which many people never have to pay is capital gains tax. This is levied on investments once disposed of, if the value has risen. If the investment is held for more than about five years (dont quote me) then the tax is not payable. Capital gains tax is not paid on a family home, but it is if you own another house for rental.

You will not usually pay any direct taxes to the State governments unless you buy and sell land, apartments or a car. State governments also tax cars every year with registration fees, these are a few hundred dollars. I have a V8 coupe and recently paid $740. This included third party injury insurance, but it does not include third party property insurance. A car insurance policy that covers your personal damage and third party property insurance is called a "comprehensive policy" . There are available from many sources, shop around a bit. be warned, the cheapest and most heavily advertised companies have a poor reputation at paying up. Surprised?

Motoring associations like the RACQ - Royal Automobile Club of Queensland and the NRMA - National Road and Motorist Association offer breakdown insurance and will insure your car, house and personal possessions.

Does anyone know of any cute room ideas?
Q. I am going to be thirteen and I want to change my room. No pink or brown please. My favorite colors are purple and green. I have a lot of pictures so maybe you can find something that has a cork board? Idk really. i'm pretty open to any ideas.
Thanks!

Disallusioned with finding a Midwife in TX, Pls Help?
Q. I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in Texas. I went to visit a Certified Nurse Midwife today. I was disappointed in the house the midwife was set in. It was in a 100 year house with a sagging foundation. It was clean and decorated nicely, but I didn't have much confidence in it. The birth setting was nice, but the exam room felt like I was going to be getting naked in someone's bedroom - it felt weird. The staff seemed disorganized, I don't know, the gut feeling was wrong.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a certified NURSE midwife (not an apprentice) in the D/FW area, preferrably in Arlington, Grand Prairie, HEB area? I am very unhappy about the OB experience and all the unnecessary things doctors do (especially since I don't want any epidurals or anything). I like the idea of a midwife, but I need a good one.

Can anyone also document their experience with a midwife? Please no uninformed midwife haters either, just experiences with midwives.

Thanks.
lol.. disillusioned.. sigh.. :)
if someone in this area has a very good ob that will follow a birthplan, please recommend them. But this has to be a person that is not going to remove the child to a nursery, that will allow me to deny the vitamin K shot and the antibiotic ointment after birth, one that will not induce me, not instruct me, not use continual fetal monitoring, and let me have a natural birth.

A. If you are looking for a midwife in the DFW area, there is a local homebirth association you should join. Even if you are not planning a homebirth, they can give you advice about all the midwives and birth centers in the area. Here is the link to the Yahoo!Group:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/HANDinfo/

And their homepage:
http://www.homebirthdallas.org

*Please* email me if I can be of any help.

Edited to add: In Texas, midwives (both CNMs and CPMs/LMs) are licensed to carry pitocin in case of postpartum bleeding. This is the same stuff they give you in the hospital.

Missing an item in my apartment for months now, suspect maintenance...?
Q. We moved into an apartment in Texas December 2010, it is now June 2011.

My wife and I are Otaku, so our apartment is decked out in wall scrolls, figurines, and 3 bookcases filled with anime DVDs. In our bedroom, we have a bookcase with a set of reader digest condensed novels from the 60's through the 80's. On the bottom shelf of that bookcase, there are several magazines. Sandwiched between the magazines and the side of the shelf, we placed a sleeve containing 15 fan artwork of various popular anime characters. Bleach, Naruto, Kingdom Hearts, Inuyasha, Death Note etc..

Several months ago (February) we cleaned out some of our books and donated them when we purchased a coffee table. We placed several magazines inside the drawers of the coffee table, at which time we saw the sleeve, pulled out the artwork, and placed it back in the same location.

We just got back from A-kon 22 in Dallas TX. We purchased several more fan artwork pieces and decided to put them in a nice binder with the 15 that were on the shelf. We went to get the sleeve and it was missing. We have now spent 4 hours turning our one bedroom apartment upside down and can not find the sleeve anywhere. We have emptied out all our drawers, filing cabinets, and bookshelves and it is no where to be found.

This leaves us with 3 possible conclusions.

1. We moved it and we have yet to find it. I don't believe this to be the case since we spent so much time looking for the artwork. While we may not pull it out a lot, we didn't want it damaged so there are only so many places you can put something that is on 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

2. The sleeve got stuck to something else and was tossed out. Again, not very likely due to the weight of 15 prints in a single sleeve.

3. Maintenance took it. I've had maintenance out 4 times since I moved in. This didn't make much sense to me a first when the wife suggested it. Our apartment is decked out in anime stuff, ceiling to floor. There are better targets in the apartment if someone wanted to steal something. We have a 6 foot bookcase with 3k worth of figurines and 3 6 foot bookcases with about 5k of DVDs, as well as PS3 with about 700 dollars in games. Most likely, someone would have gotten away with any of those things and we wouldn't have noticed for a while. The sleeve was poking out from behind the magazines so it may have presented a tempting target hidden away like it was. I dunno, maybe his kid is into anime or something. The artwork isn't worth anything, however, it can not be replaced. Like I think, this theory seems far out. Until I remember something that happened the day before the convention...

We wake up late because we both work night shift. On Thursday, I awoke to a knock on the door about 10am. There was 2 knocks and the lock started turning immediately after. We have 2 deadbolts, one can only be locked from inside. I answered the door and it was maintenance. He said he was here about the caulking. I asked him to wait a second and asked my wife if she put in a request. She told me it had been done already. So, I opened the door back up and told him that it had been done. He looked directly at his work request and said, "Oh, it looks like it was completed in April sorry about that." and he left. Remember this is now June, so I just filed it away in the back of my mind as something strange.

In light of this missing artwork, I now see it as him casing my apartment and coming back for more stuff. I don't know what to think.

So, to summarize, I have had a missing sleeve of artwork that I haven't seen in 5 months and a strange visit from maintenance that can't be explained. I will toss the apartment again before I take any further action.

My question is, has anyone out there seen anything like this before and has proven to been maintenance that stole something hidden away like that?

A. So these fans aren't worth anything, you had other valuables in plain sight, and you think that someone took the time to steal something that no one would really want?

Even if a kid were into anime, anime "fans" aren't something worth stealing, especially if they have no value.

I get your point about someone not taking something obviously noticeable, but I also doubt that anyone is going to take the time to come in "case" the place, and then take garbage.

It's been 5 months, Sure, you can "take further action", but with no proof and the stolen items being worthless, your complaint isn't going to get you anywhere. Maintenance isn't gong to be fired over baseless allegations and the police aren't going to follow up on anything.

I'm really sorry that these items are missing. If you feel like maintenance is "casing" your place set up a hidden camera and record anyone that enters. If you can prove that they are stealing, THEN you will have grounds to make an accusation and to take action.

where can i get cheap bedding?

Q. where online or in store can i find sheets, pillow cases, and bed skirts for under $30? not wal-mart or target please. it's for a teen bedroom. and queen sized bed.

A. JCPenney's has a great bedding sale right now. 7piece sets for as low as $24.95 (on clearance). They also have a great customer service department.

I need to find a bedroom set.?
Q. Okay so i need a dark brown wooden queen sized bedroom set.
I've looked on the internet for hours but i cant seem to find the right one.

I want one that includes-
Headboard.
Footboard.
2 nightstands.
dresser.
mirror.
armoire.

if you find one please please please answer this and add the website adress or a picture!!
Thanks so much! (:
and i want one that has a panel style head board, not sleigh or leather.

A. Can't guarantee you will find exactly what you want but as brown wood furniture is not 'in fashion' at the moment (though I personally love it) have you thought of scouring the second hand shops and antiques fairs? You will be recycling, getting something very sturdy and durable and also probably cheaper than new bought. Even reclamation yards that do house clearances may have lots of furniture available.
