Any ideas on what color to paint my bedroom?

Ashley

I need help on what color to paint my bedroom. My comforter is white with yellow, navy, and brown flowers all over it. I also need a color for curtains that would look good, any ideas? Thank you :)

Answer
Hi Ashley,

Out of the white, yellow, navy and brown - which are your favorite colors? Since your bedroom is a place for you to relax and enjoy - go with what you really, REALLY like.

Some ideas that I thought about are....

Consider the white as an accent color. Use it as the trim paint around your windows, the ceiling, and crown molding if you have it. Also, you could get some items that you think are really neat and paint them solid white and sit them around your room for a more updated modern look. Don't forget to think about getting some fun fur, soft or textured fabric and make pillows for your bed.

The brown in your comforter probably goes with the furniture in your room - if you have wood furniture. So let that color just do it's thing on your bed and don't worry about it.

The yellow and navy are great color combinations together - if you like them. Consider using those two colors mostly and build on that.

One idea might be to take a design (or flower) from your comforter and enlarge it REALLY big and paint it blue on one of the walls, or on 2 walls and have it wrap around the corner. Paint the rest of the room yellow! Obviously, you could switch and do the opposite, too.

If you have matching shams on your bed, consider buying inexpensive frames and cut the shams to fit within your frames and hang as art. Doing this will bring your colors and design around the room. Also, if you have extra fabric left over, use some of it to make cording for your pillows - or make a laundry bag in white and cut a shape you like out of the leftover fabric and use fabric glue and glue it on the front. Then hang it in your room as a useful decoration!

I would consider getting window shades for your room that closely match your bed - especially if it is wood. Or you could make roman shades in either blue or yellow with color cording to pull them up or down (making the cording the opposite color the shade is made of for an updated color blocking feel.)

Without seeing your comforter pattern I cannot give you any suggestions on getting any other patterns to go along with it. If you need to go with what you have - just think solid colors, and in various textures to add interest and fun in your room.

One idea, too, might be to purchase a solid color blanket (yellow or navy) and keep it at the foot of your bed to break up all the colors in your comforter and basically set the tone as to your color scheme direction.

Also, for wall decor you could get several old frames picked up at Goodwill or yard sales and paint them all in navy blue and yellow then just paint your walls white. Hang the frames in random order by themselves, maybe overlapping them, and enjoy a inexpensive art piece!

Here are some rooms that might inspire you. Ignore the age a room is for and just look at color placement around the room. Glean what you like from them!

How much should I sell my queen bedroom set?

The set is less than 2 years old and we bought it for $1400. The bed comes with headboard, footboard and rails. A matching dresser(6 drawer), mirror, and chest(5 drawer). A few tiny scratches that can be fixed with paint.
We need to sell cause we're moving out of state soon and we need the money.

So, what do you think?

Answer
I'd say $700...half of what you paid.

I am decorating my bedroom with a theatre theme (broadway-theatre, not movie theatre...) and I am stuck. I plan to have a wall in my room be covered by an NYC skyline, and I have a few playbills framed on a shelf, but aside from that, I don't know what else to do... I really want it to be completely themed, rather than, you know, a poster here, a mask there.... I have a lot of shelves and things like that, and not a TON of room... What other things could go into a really cool broadway themed bedroom? What colors should be the focus of the room? Accents? Decor? Bedding? Anything else? Really specific ideas are more than welcome... =)

Answer
Two color choices came to mind. Black and silver for a contemporary look or Maroon for an old stage look. But, I think if you have a skyline on one wall, you should definitely go with the black and silver. I'm a fan of drapes behind the bed also make sure you start your drapes at the ceiling for a dramatic look. I don't know if you have seen mirrored furniture but you can get chest of drawers in solid mirror and that would look great with the silver and black theme. I would accent with a lot of mirrored furniture. Make the room cozier with a throw rug - like a white, shaggy rug in the middle of the room. Or maybe a sitting area to one side with a rug and coffee table. I would definitely replace the typical ceiling fan most rooms have with a chandelier. If you're on a budget, you can always get chandeliers for next to nothing at salvage shops like Salvation Army and Goodwill. But, yeah... you got to get rid of the ceiling fan to really put the look over. Don't forget you can spray paint some chandeliers with glossy enamels like glossy black for example. Also, hang up some mirrors as well. Maybe paint the ceiling a light grey to get rid of the stark white look. You might even consider painting the walls black. I know that sounds really stark but I have seen that look good. It would also help to make the room look smaller. Try out the colors with a room visualizer software. Standing plant like palm tree plants also help to make a room look more expensive. Make sure to put the plant basket in a sharp looking planter. Hope some of these suggestions helped!

Ideas for bedroom furniture?

I recently moved into my new house and painted my bedroom (one wall deep plumy-purple and the other three are lavender. I don't have any bedroom furniture and am looking into buying it. What color should I get? White? Dark wood? Black? I love the look of black and a dark brown wood, but am afraid it will make my room look too small & dark, especially with the dark plum wall.

What color should I get furniture? Any modern, stylish ideas?

Answer
I don't see a problem with a deep exspresso coffee colored line of furniture. In fact, since it's a neutral, it will go with anything. You can easily keep the room light and airy because only one wall is a deep plumy-purple, the other three are a lavendar, making it light. So opt for the dark wood you like and keep the bedding light and more contemporary in style, since dark wood marries this style quite well. Here are a few suggestions as far as furniture and bedding go. And don't forget to add lots of silver accents to the room - vases, frames, mirrors, lamps, wastebasket, etc. These will reflect light and keep the room flowing. Keep from buying a full headboard. Instead, opt more along the lines of something that lets light thru, such as a slat headboard.
http://furniturefromhome.com/images/store/862-1/760x600/image.jpg
http://www.moderneurodesign.com/images/products/GF-Camilla-Bedroom.jpg
Aim to keep the headboard low and avoid a footboard if you can. It's best to have a bed that stands on feet as opposed to a platform bed or a full side bed. Having legs without letting the bedding go down to the floor gives you the illusion of space. Make it so that the room is minimalist with a hint of zen and you'll be fine.

Consider opting for bedding with a hotel look:

http://www.wshome.com/products/p270/index.cfm
http://www.nextag.com/hotel-collection-bedding/products-html

Or stick with light colored bedding. By doing this, you'll be just fine and the room won't be too dark.

Tuscan bedroom???

mackenzies

My mom wants to do her bedroom in a tuscan theme. She had a really big room. We just bought this 5 piece bedroom set from JCPenny. http://www5.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductsHOM.aspx?ItemID=1195e8c&ItemTyp=G&GrpTyp=STY&ShowMenu=T&ShopBy=0&SearchString=cameo&RefPage=SearchDepartment.aspx&Search1Prod=True
it also comes with two side tables and an armoire.
she also kind of wants a like reading corner like with a chair or something.
Any ideas on what else to put in the room???
links??? pictures???

Answer
This bedroom set has more of a traditional, not Tuscan feel. I actually think it would look pretty paired with a sage green bedspread and accessories, or even light blue. However, if you want to make the room feel more Tuscan, you might want to paint the walls a light Siena color and get a bedspread with yellows and golds. A framed photo of the Italian landscape and some light sheers on the windows would hlep make it feel more Tuscan.

I want to buy a comforter for my bedroom but I can't find anything?

Anna

Hi guys!
My room is a light olive green color and one wall is dark beige. I need to find a pretty comforter that would match it, but I can't find anything!
I am a teenager, but the problem is that I am looking for something a little more mature and feminine than hot pink zebra stripes. And all the adult comforters are too mature for me.
If any of you guys can find anything I will love you forever!
So the basics are:
I need something feminine but not old lady.

princess or fairy tale bedroom?

AddieMom13

Anyone know a website I can visit that sells princess (not disney) and/or fairy tale bedroom stuff for a little girl? My daughter would like a "princess" themed bedroom, but everything is SO expensive. Her room is nice right now, but it's a miss-matched mess of hand-me-downs. The only beautiful thing is a light-beige wood-grain dresser with mirror that is just breathtaking that my mother-in-law gave us. Other than that, he doesn't have a bed frame, just a box spring and mattress on the floor, plain white curtains, no comforter, and some Disney princess decals on the walls (we want to get away from the Disney stuff). I found a beautiful website called 'the frog and the princess" but it's like, $300 for a quilt, $120 for 1 curtain shear. Give me a break!
Any ideas would be great. Thanks!
The princess and the frog is an old Fairy Tale, Disney just recently used it for a movie. But the website has nothing to do with that, hence it's called the "Frog and The Princess".
It's such beautiful stuff...check it out. www.thefrogandtheprincess.com
I would do it myself, but I can't figure out how to use a sewing machine. I'm just not cut out for it. I can cross stitch, so I'm thinking of getting some good quality stitchables, like afghans and sheets you can cross stitch on, and just doing it that way....

Answer
Try a Homegoods store..they have alot of cute girls bedding and decor and at a good price. You have to go to the store..they dont have a website.
Also try jcpenney.com. they have a disney princess bed set but...it the bedding has silouets(sp) of the princesses and not the pictures. the accents have the princess pics on them. its on clearance!

check out ebay, if you don't mind used they may have something nice.

amazon.com..type in fairy tale bedding. they have one that is kind of cute, and accessories to go with the bedding.

How can i make my bedroom look better without spending to much?

M - Kay

My bedroom is a bit boring and i would love to hear ideas on how to make it look more interesting without spending to much.

Answer
The easiest way to freshen up your bedroom is to get new bedding. Overstock.com has the most reasonable prices:
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Comforter-Sets/2/subcat.html?sort=Lowest+Price
But you can also find things at Target, Kmart, Linens N Things,
http://www.bedbathstore.com/bed.html
http://www.designerlinensoutlet.com/store/category.asp?SID=1&category_id=25

The other cheap way to give your room a new look was already mentioned - paint it. It's more work than just changing the bedding, of course, but it can make a big difference. You could paint all of the walls, or you simply add stripes or dots or a stencil.

How can i re-decorate my bedroom? But im not aloud to paint it?

Lydia

Have anyone got any ideas to re-decorate my bedroom. But my parents wont let me paint it again untill next year lol. I am thinking of buying new duvet and pillow covers, new mirror, wall clock and making everything modern. but this will take a long time to save up for and i am quite skint :L Thanks. Everything is considered and helpful :D x
Also...does anyone know where i can get really nice bedroom mirrors and duvet covers that are really modern and cheapish. x

Answer
The thing that is going to "refresh" your room the most and give it the best new look is going to be the bedding. That makes your bedding top priority, so you should set aside most of the money for that. These are a few of my suggestions that should change it up the most for the least amount of money:

4-piece set that includes comforter, bedskirt, and two shams.
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/North-Crest-Home-Silhouette-Floral-4-piece-Comforter-Set/3084457/product.html?

8-piece set includes duvet cover, 2 euro shams, bedskirt and 2 decorative pillows. This one is my favorite and the least expensive at $59.99

http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3084237&cp=1331605.2623890&view=all&parentPage=family

Your accents should be a bold color, to help play up the modern look, but they also need to correspond with your bedding. For the mirror (I'm assuming you meant a wall mirror) I found this.

$18.00 black wall mirror:

http://www.target.com/Wall-Mirror-Black-25-5x15-5/dp/B0015EB4V4/sr=1-4/qid=1219356743/ref=sr_1_4/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&field-browse=1038576&rh=k%3Amirror%2Cp%5F3%3A%240-%2424&page=1

For the clock, I love this one, and I think it will really help with the modern feel:

http://www.target.com/Silver-Ball-Retro-Wall-Clock/dp/B0002IGJ5U/qid=1219357306/ref=br_1_4/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&node=197723011&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=197723011&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=2

To soothe the tone a little and make it a more relaxing atmosphere, I reccomend one of these candlegardens:

http://www.target.com/Candle-Garden/dp/B0001BRMSQ/sr=1-2/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_2/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

http://www.target.com/Candle-Garden-Red/dp/B000NING46/sr=1-3/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_3/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

http://www.target.com/Candle-Garden-Green/dp/B000NING4Q/sr=1-1/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_1/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

http://www.target.com/Coffee-Break-Candle-Gift-Set/dp/B00006BHK2/sr=1-5/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_5/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

You also might consider getting posters or wall art and maybe a floor plant (like a palm tree). For the posters, go to

http://www.art.com/

They have a lot of really nice, inexpensive posters. Some come in frames.

Good luck and I hope I helped! :)

Why is there condensation on my walls?

ChoobiesMo

I noticed there seems to be condensation on my bedroom walls where there is an exterior wall on the other side. Most of the condensation appears near beds where the bed touches the wall. It's an older house built in the 60s, and there is no wall insulation. Can anybody explain this, and tell me whether this is a problem?

Answer
you need to insulate your walls. When you have an outside wall that is freezing cold, and you have warm air inside, the warm air condensates on the cold wall. It is like if you have a glass of cold water and you set it outside in the heat, what happens? The glass will start dripping water. This is what is happening on your walls. If you have a styrofoam cup of cold water and you set it in the heat, what happens? Nothing because it is insulated from the heat. Insulate your walls is the only thing that will rid you of this problem.

What are some good themes for a room?

Daniel-bry

I am redoing my room and need ideas on what i could possibly do. i am 16. i am an artist. i do not like sports so please don't say a sports theme. i would like something that looks cool and chill. i was thinking about like a 60s theme or splatter painting the wall. but i don't think the splatter painting would look so good. what do you think?

Answer
The problem with splatter paint is that when you want to repaint you have to scrap off all the splatter paint. It is a lot of work and not really worth it IMO.

AN

I would like to find a nice, twin size bed that includes the mattress, boxspring, head/foot board or even an entire bedroom set for the right price. It's for my 5-year old boy.

Answer
Believe it or not the Goodwill Store in Tampa sells brand new mattresses. I would also check out www.tampa.craigslist.org and the Tampa Tribune special ads for items under $250. People are always advertising kids' bedroom sets in the Tampa Tribune. You can even go online to its site and do a search in the classifieds for ads in the last week, searching by the zip code close to you

How much would it cost to completely redecorate a bedroom including mattress, bookshelf, and other room items?

ariandanio

room items include: desk, dresser, new books, bean bag chair, hangers, clothing, curtains, paint, lamp, canopy, flip-fold chair, sidetable, computer, keyboard, monitor, mouse, swivel chair, three comforter sets, twin mattress, carpet, rug, telephone with my own private line and other miscelllaneous items that are suitable for 12 year old girl.

Answer
You can go to different Thrift and second hand stores and get some great deals and nice things. Also look in the paper for things people are getting rid of. I would say if you take your time and shop wisely about 2,000 for everything.

I am so stressed out about having bed bugs 2 months ago?

bedroom sets under 600 dollars

bedroom sets under 600 dollars image
Q. Two months ago I found out we had bed bugs. I was getting bit for some time but never could find anything. I have come to the conclusion it came from the Uhaul we used to transport our box spring. We spent 600 dollars (including the encasements) to get rid of them. The box spring encasement ended up ripping and I started seeing them again! So they came out and treated. Since then we threw the box spring out. We are pitching the rest of our furniture in our bedroom as well. This has traumatized me. From packing up everything and washing it all to just emotionally being scarred. I am pregnant as well so you can only imagine. We are moving and I am afraid we still have them even though I have not seen them. I set a homemade trap under my sons crib to see if any are there. What else do you suggest. What are your stories? Did the exterminations work? Did you throw anything out? Anything would be helpful!

Answer
With bed bugs you must find the source of the infestation and start treating it immediately as it will only get worse. It is likely your infestation is coming from your mattress or bed area. Remember bed bugs like to live close to the human host so they can easily feed at night.

child support - am i being cheated?

Mac

my parents have been divorced for a little over a year now. my dad has custody of me, my brother, and my sister every other wednesday and every other weekend, and my mom has us the rest of the time. obviously my dad is paying child support. he is a wealthy lawyer, and from what ive gathered he pays $2300/mo for child support and $5000/mo in spousal support. my mom does not work, and has made no attempt to even try to get a job. shes living off of that money and tells us that she deserves it for having put up with him. to be honest i dont think it was all that bad. he cheated on her. thats all. i mean it wasnt a good thing to do, but whatever. i digress. the first thing that my mom did when she started getting money was redecorate the entire house, except for our rooms. it wasnt cheap either, all in all she spent at least $30,000, probably more. a large part of the downstairs walls is done in venisian plaster, that alone cost a fortune. soon after, she started talking to an old friend, who was at the time going through a divorce with his wife. a few weeks into being friends with him, his right foot collapsed in on itself as a result of years of dyalisys, and it has been in a large cast since. he had just leased a new car at the time, which he gave to my mom since her lease had just ended and he could no longer drive. he still even pays the bills for the car. i can tell he wants to date her, but she says no. it goes past the car too, he spends thousands and thousands of dollars on her. theyre still friends. anyway, since then she has bought for herself a huge new bed, a new computer, a very expensive dining room table which none of us are allowed to touch, and more recently, brand new bedroom sets for herself and my little brother. i never got along with her, and neither does my sister. the only one of us that she really does get along with is my little brother. now heres the really interesting part. if any of us bring up child support, or even mention the words child support, she goes into a frenzy. she screams at the top of her lungs, swears, and usually ends up sobbing. she once told me to "fuck off" in front of my eight year old brother. its not like i even accuse her of anything, even though i feel i should. like even if im just joking she still goes crazy. i cant get much out of my dad before he just stops talking about it but he says that shes spending child support on herself. he wont talk about it for more than a minute though, he says that it gets us nowhere to talk badly about her. today i brought child support up again, because recently ive started to wonder why, if she has nothing to hide, why wouldnt she show me some papers, or bank statements, to prove me wrong? she claims that shes putting the child support away in a special bank account for college. i wanted to see that bank account, so i asked her. as expected, she went wild. she yelled things like, "how dare you question me!?" and "its none of your business!". she told me all the same things she always does, and i told her that i wanted to see it on paper. after a lot of arguing, she finally said ok, fine, and slams down a huge folder of bill copies in front of me. i said this tells me nothing, but she wouldnt give me anything else. so i decided to come here and get other opinions. is my own mother stealing from me?
im not trying to sound ungrateful, and yes, i have these things, but i dont think its right that she gets $2300 a month to take care of her kids and is most likely pocketing it. by the way, the roof over my head, has its mortgage paid off in full by my dad, something he received no compensation for.

Answer
I've been trying to get a father to do this, but your dad would make a great candidate for it.

First off, understand that your mother has $60,000 a year in taxable income. That's what Alimony is. As such, 20-25% of that she's suppose to spend on you and your brother, under all state child support regulations.

When Child Support is calculated, they add together the incomes of both parents. That means his income, minus the $60,000, because Alimony is deductible, plus the $60,000 she gets in taxable income. From this total the child support amount is taken from the guidelines. Added to this is the cost day care, medical insurance, etc. At this point the income of each parent is divided by the total income of both. This shows what percentage a parent's income is of the total.

Example taken from actual case:
$60,000 Mother
$110.400 Father (estimate)
$170,400 Total
$110,400 / $170,400 = 65%

In this example, the father (obligor) owes 64% of the total obligation or roughly $27,600 a year (based on average percentage for 2 kids of 25%) in support of one child, but the mother (obligee) is also obligated to spend $15,000 a year on the child, for a total of $42,600, or $3500 a month.

The problem is in over 90% of the cases, only the Obligor is required to prove the payment of the child support. When either parent's income increases, their obligation increases, but the child only clearly benefits from the increase of the obligor's income. The obligee is under no requirement to spend more on the child.

By having both parents paying into a Trust Fund, the custodial parent than provides the fund with proof that the money is being spent on the child, such as a percentage of rent or house payment, utilities, food, etc. Also, the cost of necessities, such as clothing, shoes, and other expenses exclusive to the child, with receipts and clothing tags or proof of purchase cut from the package. All this follows in accordance with Federal Laws dating back 100 years as regards Trust Funds that have been established for Guardians to draw from when parents have been killed, such as in an accident. Also in cases involving child stars (The Coogan Act-1939) where the law is designed to prevent their parents from spending the money for their own uses that belongs to the children.

Any money left in the account would than collect interest and be available for emergencies, or special expenses, such as part of the cost of a car for a teenager, or a college education.

Using this method would mean the child is getting full advantage of the support owed by both the parents, and not just one parent.
****************************************************
Please keep me apprised if he decides to try it, or you do. In the cases of child stars, attorneys have represented them, individually in establishing a trust fund, so you may have standing to file the case, yourself.

Answer
A furniture brand you might want to look into is Prepac furniture. It's the type of furniture you have to assemble yourself, but it's much nicer than any other furniture of that type I've ever come across. I was apprehensive to try it, but I didn't want to settle for the assembled furniture I was finding for the price I wanted to pay. I'm glad I gave it a chance - it's great! I'll include a link below to where I got it :)

Moving to Pittsburgh, help!!?

Chris

Hello everyone! Thanks for taking time to read this! My name is Chris. I currently live and work in North Dakota, taking care of 2 of my sisters and 1 brother. My brother also works and helps out a great deal. My sisters are 15 and 17, I've had them since I was 20, and I'm turning 26 in March. If you're curious as to why we're in this situation, long story short; our mother passed away in an automobile accident in 07 - and there wasn't really any other acceptible solution apart from taking in the siblings I could.
Anyway, after spending some time there in 2008, reading some about it, and meeting a few folks from Pittsburgh, we've become very interested in moving there before the end of '13. I've paid off most of my debt and have been progressively saving what I can. If all goes well I'll have around $5-6 g saved up at the time of an actual move. Of course, I'd also like to have a job (For both my brother and my self, probably in food prep/cooking) and a 3 bedroom apartment set up before actually moving. Enrollment in school for my sisters, etc.
The main reason I'd like to move is to attend the Art Institute. I'd have to say my whole attitude on it at the moment is..."if" i can get things set up somewhat properly - I can work a shitty job cooking job like I do now, and attend school... but in a place me and my family love. I don't have all the answers, and realize I PROBABLY don't know wtf i'm talking about...but thats why I need your help! Financially, my brother, cousin, and myself would all be splitting most costs 3-ways...maybe even the older of my sisters will be helping out. We have 2 vehicles in good condition, a car and a van. I'm just trying to spout out all the info I can to give whoever a better chance of helping me!
I'm wondering about 'cost of living' in Pittsburgh...what are the more convenient/moderately priced neighborhoods...close to highscool, jobs, etc. Hell, I'm not even sure what questions TO ask.....I just want some resassurance that it's possible for us. Does it sound ridiculous? I don't know.

The Arnolfini Marriage - Jan Van Eyck help...?

alex

can you describe the painting The Arnolfini Marriage using element and Principles of art ) texture, line, pattern ,color ,shape, contrast, value , from,...

Answer
This painting is believed to be a portrait of Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife in a room, presumably in their home in the Flemish city of Bruges. It is considered one of the most original and complex paintings in Western art history. Being both signed and dated by Van Eyck in 1434, it is, with the Ghent Altarpiece by the same artist and his brother Hubert, the oldest very famous panel painting to have been executed in oils rather than in tempera. The painting was bought by the National Gallery in London in 1842.

This painting was long believed to be a portrait of Giovanni di Arrigo Arnolfini and his wife Giovanna Cenami in a Flemish bedchamber, but it was established in 1997 that they were married in 1447, thirteen years after the date on the painting and six years after van Eyck's death. It is now believed that the subject is Giovanni di Arrigo's cousin Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife. This is either an undocumented second wife, or, according to a recent proposal, his first wife Costanza Trenta, who had died by February 1433.[2] This would make the painting partly a memorial portrait, showing one living and one dead person. Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini was an Italian merchant, originally from Lucca, but resident in Bruges since at least 1419.[3] He is the subject of a further portrait by Van Eyck in Berlin, leading to speculation he was a friend of the artist.[4]

[edit] Description

DaggingThe painting[5] is generally in very good condition, though with small losses of original paint and damages, which have mostly been retouched. Infra-red reflectograms of the painting show many small alterations, or pentimenti, in the underdrawing: to both faces, to the mirror, and to other elements.

The couple are shown in an upstairs room in summer as indicated by the cherry tree outside the window which is in fruit. The room is in fact not a bedroom, as usually assumed, but a reception room as it was the fashion in France and Burgundy to have beds in reception rooms that were normally used just as seating except, for example, when a mother with a new baby received visitors. The window has six interior wooden shutters, but only the top opening has glass, with clear bulls-eye pieces set in blue, red and green stained glass.

The two figures are very richly dressed; despite the season both their outer garments, his tabard and her dress, are trimmed and fully lined with fur. The furs may be the especially expensive sable for him and ermine or miniver for her. He wears a hat of plaited straw dyed black, as often worn in the summer at the time. His tabard was once rather more purple than it appears now, as the pigments have faded; it may be intended to be silk velvet (another very expensive element). Underneath he wears a doublet of patterned material, probably silk damask. Her dress has elaborate dagging (cloth folded and sewn together, then cut and frayed decoratively) on the sleeves, and a long train. Her blue underdress is also trimmed with white fur.

Although the woman's plain gold necklace and the plain rings both wear are the only jewellery visible, both outfits would have been enormously expensive, and appreciated as such by a contemporary viewer. But especially in the case of the man, there may be an element of restraint in their clothes befitting their merchant status - portraits of aristocrats tend to show gold chains and more decorated cloth.

Charles the Bold surprising David Aubert, a miniature with an unusual variant of the presentation portrait, probably alluding to Alexander the Great, who surprised one of his artists in similar fashion. The rear wall seems to refer to the Arnolfini Portrait of forty years earlier, containing many of the same objects, in particular the painted inscription on the wall. Before 1472.The interior of the room has other signs of wealth; the brass chandelier is large and elaborate by contemporary standards, and would have been very expensive. It would probably also have had a mechanism with pulley and chains above, to lower it for managing the candles. Van Eyck has probably omitted this for lack of room. The convex mirror at the back, in a wooden frame with scenes of The Passion painted behind glass, is shown larger than such mirrors could actually be made at this date - another discreet departure from realism by Van Eyck. There is also no sign of a fireplace (including in the mirror), nor anywhere obvious to put one. Even the oranges casually placed to the left are a sign of wealth; they were very expensive in Burgundy, and may have been one of the items dealt in by Arnolfini.

Further signs of luxury are the elaborate bed-hangings, which are probably held up by iron rods suspended from the ceiling, and the carvings on the chair and bench against the back wall (to the right, partly hidden by the bed). There is a chandelier and an orange. There is a small Oriental carpet on the floor by the bed; many owners of such expensive objects p

I have a 50 year old french provincial bedroom set that i want to sell. How much should i be asking? ?

Anna M

it is a 5 pc set. good condition.

Answer
You can find out easily. A 50 year old set is not an antique, so it isn't going to have a huge auction value. Look online at craigslist or similar sites, to see what similar sets are selling for. Pictures are often included in the ads and are very useful in making a comparison. Consider the prices people are asking for to be a starting point for negotiations.

IMPORTANT: If you are not the original purchaser of the furniture, be sure to check out the manufacturer of the set. Some are worth a SUBSTANTIAL amount more than others.

What colors and themes go well with oak and dark green?

Haley

I am planning on moving into a pretty small apartment with my boyfriend and we're planning on using his bedroom set which includes a nightstand and two dressers. They are oak with a dark green finish on the top. I want our bedroom to still look open and light and somewhat feminine. Too many ideas out there for dark green would make the room a cave so I need some ideas to make it look like the perfect mix of man/woman without washing out the light and space. Any ideas?

Answer
The main thing you need to do is find bedding that lightens the dark green up. See if you like any of these:

I'm moving into a new, smaller apartment and would love a minimalistic, calming decor. I can't afford to spend too much, but I am very crafty, own a sewing machine. I have a set of textured red curtains that look gorgeous.

Any ideas?

Answer
I love bamboo roman shades paired with beautiful curtains. Keep your furniture very minimal, and get a few asian inspired throw pillows for your couch, or chairs or whatever you have. Something that will match your curtains. Or you can find some fun asian inspired fabric to make the throw pillows out of (try e-bay for some cheap fabrics).

Check out this fabric, this is beautiful with a little hint of red, and it's not tooo busy: pretty cheap on e-bay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ZEN-CAMOUFLAGE-VINTAGE-JAPANESE-SILK-HAORI-FABRIC_W0QQitemZ270315153557QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item270315153557&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50#ebayphotohosting

You could do a couple of throw pillows out of that.

I would leave everything else very minimal, maybe do a nice mirrow with a big frame (black or something pretty plain). I would do a lot of natural things, like the bamboo shades, maybe a seagrass or jute rug,

Maybe a woven trunk for storage that can double as an ottoman. I recently picked up 3 of these at my local target, but they were 50% off.

http://www.target.com/Square-Banana-Leaf-Woven-Trunk/dp/B0012N759I/sr=1-1/qid=1228799917/ref=sr_1_1/183-7292684-8445769?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Awoven%20trunk&page=1

They are darker in color as they appear on the website. I have used two pushed next to each other as a coffee table, and one as a side table next to a chair in my living room.

What is most important, is to bring stuff into the room that makes you feel the most comfortable in your space. I have "inspiration pieces" in all my rooms that really make the room for me. In my living room it's a palm tree painting from a local artist here, every time I look at it, I'm absorbed into it for a little while.

In my bedroom it's my down european pillows on my bed, They are so comfortable and comforting. Find something that you LOVE and build your room off of that. But use it as your "main attraction".

Happy Decorating, and Happy Holidays.

Hey, does anyone know where I could buy a new eco-friendly bedroom set for no more than $500.00?

Q. I'm looking for one in an asian style or antique european. I have very little money and I can't be driving to people's homes to look at furniture being sold in the newspaper because I don't have a car... but I desperately need to get my home and life organized and so I need furniture to do that. I can't have goodwill bring anything in because the last time I tried that they were so astonished by my home; my mom is a pack-rat... and I am not going through that again! Lastly, I would just really prefer it to be eco-friendly because I care about the environment and I have also read that eco-friendly furniture is better for your health. Please help... Thank you!

Would a man be charged with statutory rape in this scenario?

Scuby Doob

Can a man be charged with statutory rape when he is the penetrated legally speaking?
The underage young man is 15-17 and is much taller and bigger than the man and the man is gay and he is gay. Wouldn't that be funny that he is charged with rape for a boy that is bigger and taller than him and he did not penetrate the boy and the boy penetrated him? That is why I think it is stupid for a women to be charged with statutory rape of a boy. How can the penetrated be raping only the penetrater rapes?

Answer
Rape is an act of violence not of love under the law of the land. What we think, want, desire does not count before the law. In your supposed scenario, if the person was 15 yes, it would considered statutory rape (a more modern term-corruption of a minor). There is no state within the USA that allows a 15 yr old, male or female, to consent to sex.

In the United States of America age of consent laws are made at the state level. There exist several federal statutes related to protecting children from sexual predators, but none of them imposes an age limit on sexual acts. On 26 June 2003, both heterosexual and homosexual sodomy became legal in all US states and territories under a US Supreme Court decision called Lawrence v. Texas (between non-commercial, consenting adults in a private bedroom).

State laws
Each state of the Union has its own age of consent. Currently state laws set the age of consent at 16, 17 or 18.

The age of consent 16: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia

The age of consent 17: Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Texas

It would cost us roughly $850 to use U-Haul and to pack ourselves and this isn't including gas. Does anyone know of any other ways? We set aside only $1000 for the move. We have a 3 bedroom house to move, but no big kitchen items (like fridge and washer and dryer), just living room and bedroom furniture and other household items. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
Actually moving it yourself is the cheapest way UNLESS it is a Local move.
So far you have gotten one of the cheapest rates out there for self moves.

Here is a rule of thumb to follow:

If your furniture is actually worth less then the cost to move it---don't!
Have a yard sale and then when you get to your new home buy
new or used which ever you can afford

You can always look for coupons or coupon codes ( on the internet) to get discount rates or special rates from self move companies like Budget, UHaul, Penske. Ryder.

We used Penske( because I got a great discount at the time)

Apply for a gas card and use it for the trip. You can pay it off over time.

Remember to Keep ALL expense receipts because you can deduct this move off your income tax ----rental truck, food, hotels, gas or milage deduction, job search, airline tickets if they were part of it etc.

Good Luck

I am currently designing my bedroom and need ideas.?

I have a very tight budget, so DIY projects are definitely welcome. I have three light yellow walls and one light blue wall. It is a small bedroom-my furniture consists of a king sized bed, a dresser and a bookshelf (both of those are tall rather than wide-they take up less room that way).
I'm looking mainly for ideas of wall art. I don't have a headboard and was thinking of making one myself, but I don't know, since my room is already small it might make it appear smaller.
thanks!

Answer
you can get an 8' sheet of plywood, cover it with quilt batting on one side, stapled to the plywood on the other, and a few yards of a fabric that goes well with your other decor to cover the batting, again stapled to the other side. Lay longways on the floor behind the head of your bed for an instant, cheap headboard.
Another cheap idea for decor is to get a large canvas (oil painting type) and some colors you like, splash across the canvas and let dry. Instant art. Pretty cheap.
Make the most of the room you have with underbed storage bins.
