Looking to move to TX from NYC. Is San Antonio or Houston better??

I'm looking to move to TX from NYC. I have never been to TX. I might buy a 2 bedroom condo and pay that off in 5 years or something and then buy a home around 400K.... something like that... right now we're looking into San Antonio and Houston. Can a Texan or someone that's been around TX recommend a good place to live in TX and why? We want to get away from New York. We're used to a very urban lifestyle and even Houston would feel like a rural area to us... but we want a change... Any thoughts??? What's the best place in TX to move? & why?

(money isn't an issue.. so please don't use that as a reason... because moving from Manhattan to ANYWHERE in TX seems cheap.. ha)

PLEASE don't go to Houston! It is horribly polluted, the traffic and the drivers horrendous, plus it is still overrun with hurricane katrina refugees, so housing can be tricky to find. i'm born and raised in Texas and lived in many different places in the state. If you are set on only San Antonio or Houston, than definitely San Antonio. But, San Antonio is quickly turning into an inner-city city, and will be as bad as Houston within 10 years tops. Why are you wanting to move to Texas? what are you hoping to find? texas land is as varied as you can get. There are mountains, desert, ocean, hills, plains, and canyons. In each of those settings there are wonderful places to live. If money was no option, and it was up to me, I would live in San Marcos. It's close to San Antonio, so it's large enough to have all of the conveniences I would think you would want. It's close enough to international airports so travel is easy. The local economy has been steady and very successful. It has it's cultural quaintness that gives it a small town feel, without having to suffer any changes in your lifestyle. plus, the highways are great! Hope that helps, and be prepared to have everyone make fun of you accent! lol =)

Is there a big difference between coffee and espresso colored furniture?

Q. I am trying to complete a bedroom set by purchasing different parts from different sets. The headboard I bought was beautiful, but the dressers and armoires weren't. So I'm putting together my own "set". I would consider my headboard to be an espresso color and there is a dresser online that is considered "coffee" color. There are other dressers that are espresso but I L0VE this dresser. If I were to purchase it would the colors be totally off?

Espresso is nearly black Coffee is a very dark brown ..As far as the colors being off...yes depends on their proximity and the lighting too. PLus the colors are wildly different manufacturer to manufacturer. It could work especially if it is multitoned.. What I would do is take a photo that accurately represents the color of the headboard and email it to them but their monitors could be skewed.

Has anyone known a lifetime crib to actually last through the three stages?

I just purchased the Babi Italia Lifetime crib and bedroom set, It looks amazing, and can't wait to get it in and set it up. But I want to know if a lifetime crib actually will last 18 plus years. Any advice?

Treat it like you would any other good furniture. Clean and protect it. Oil and reseal the wood, tighten screws, fix loose or broken/cracked parts, and check it for wear regularly.

Your question and what you say you are looking for are completely different. Memory foam mattresses are a completely diferent breed of mattress. Some find them amazing; others, not so much. One memory foam that has done really well in the way of not getting a lot of complaints is the Dynasty memory foam mattress. It's also cheaper than a lot of the memory foam mattresses on the market. My suggestion - do your research online, not at the stores. Too many buyers get blindsided by salesmen. Either the salesmen doesn't care about anything except commission, others just aren't trained to handle customer needs.

Fro that shipment you will probably pay far too much using a U-haul and drive yourself. They are pretty expensive. You can of course look up their web-site and calculate the cost for yourself.

Why not call up any of the major shipping firms and talk to their estimator. You will probably get a much better price from them. They all offer less-than-carload rates for smaller shipments.

How do I match up a bed frame to my headboard?

Recently I bought a bedroom set and it came with a headboard. The headboard supports a queen size bed. I had a full-size bed. If I find a good bed frame how can I know if it will attach? I guess they all come with something for connecting the frame to the headboard? I did find a bed frame at Wallmart but it it says it doesn't require the box spring. So, maybe it will be too high to connect onto the headboard.

You have to match the frame to the headboard. If you have a queen-sized headboard and a full-sized bed frame, the headboard will be too big. If you want to use it anyway, you will have to make some adapter brackets.

If you rent a UHaul and tow the car you can do it for much less than a moving company will charge. It's not difficult (except for the driving part). It will run you about $1200 for a truck and car tow.

You can find out easily. A 50 year old set is not an antique, so it isn't going to have a huge auction value. Look online at craigslist or similar sites, to see what similar sets are selling for. Pictures are often included in the ads and are very useful in making a comparison. Consider the prices people are asking for to be a starting point for negotiations.

IMPORTANT: If you are not the original purchaser of the furniture, be sure to check out the manufacturer of the set. Some are worth a SUBSTANTIAL amount more than others.

What is a reasonable price for a used bedroom set?

My husband and I have an old oak bedroom set, still in pretty good condition, that we are wanting to sell in our neighborhood garage sale. It would be a dresser with a large mirror, a tall dresser (has some slight damage on the top in the back, it is difficult to see, the damage is above eye level) a night stand and a queen size bed frame. We have different ideas about what is a good price to ask for it. Any thoughts?

If it were perfect and rather new, I'd say about 40% of the original price. Since, it's not perfect, and I don't know the quality or brand name, how about 20% of the original price - cash, no delivery.

I've literally lived all over the world and I can tell you that for starters...a lot depends on what town or city you'll be moving to, the neighborhood in that town or city you'd like to live in, the age of the building, the size of the apartment itself and the "extras" the building does or doesn't offer it's tentants. All apartments are not created equal.

A "tiny one bedroom, unfurnished, uncarpeted, no AC, no curtains/drapes, no kitchen appliances, no assigned parking space, you pay your own utilities, you clean-up after the last tentant before you move in, and paint it at your own expense apartment" in a small town in a rural county will be a lot cheaper to rent then a similair apartment in New York City. And even in New York it can vary from one neighborhood to the next.

A spacious one bedroom "bachelor/bacheloret apartment" with den/office, fully carpeted, custom drapes, fresh paint, professionally cleaned, fireplace, deluxe fully equipped kitchen, master bathroom,"powder room" and laundry room, doorman plus security parking, AC, building SPA & exercise rooms, indoor pool, etc. in a small town in a rural county will be a lot cheaper to rent then a similair apartment in New York City. And again, even in New York it can vary from one neighborhood to the next.

Location is a BIG deal everywhere in the world... as much so as the actual square footage of an apartment.

As for "decorating" costs...that depends on your tastes and more importantly...your budget. You can go to a second hand shop and furnish an apartment with "the basics" for five hundred dollars....or you can spend five hundred dollars for a lamp. Your choice... your pocket book. If your budget is on the small size...throw a "house warming party" and let your friends and relatives help you out with household gifts or gift cards.

There are no hard and fast rules when determining what expenses you'll have when renting any apartment or house. The owners make the rules and what they require from their tentants "up-front" moneywise. However...most want to rent/lease in a competitive manner while still making a profit. That is why they have invested money into a building and are renting/leasing that property...to earn a profit. In general landlords set their rental rates according to the "going rates" for similair apartments in the same general area of a town. If an apartment in one area is say $500 a month, and a similair apartment is $1,000 a month on the other side of town, there'll be a real good reason and you can bet that other landlords are getting similair rents.
You get what you pay for. If a rental price seems too good to be true...it probably is.

Time to check out the neighborhood and chat up a few of the other tentants or neighbors. Visit the neighborhood at night...which is probably when you'll be spending the most time in your apartment. Make sure there aren't noises at night that will prevent you from sleeping like airplanes taking off and landing at a near by airport. If you are a day sleeper, pay attention to any day time noises that might do the same....like a bus stop out front, a church across the street (one with beautiful LOUD bells)....or a fire station or hospital...a "open 24 hours" store, etc.

On average though most landlords will usually want at least the first month's rent plus a month's rent as a "security deposit". Some want first and last month's rent PLUS an additional "security deposit".
If pets are allowed, you'll also be expected to cough up an additional month's rent as a "pet deposit" if you have or get a pet at any point. And don't make the mistake of thinking you can sneak a kitty in without the landlord's knowledge. Someone will find out or suspect a cat when they see you hauling kitty litter in & out and they will report you. And if you think you can somehow talk the landlord into letting you keep your pet when & if you get caught...well good luck with that. Your personal pet deposit amount may be double what others had to pay since the landlord can no longer trust you.
And if the landlord has a friend or relative in need of your apartment...this may be just the excuse needed to get you evicted. Never try to pull a "fast one" over on your landlord...your next landlord may want a reference from them.

So if rent is say $700 a month and you want to bring along your cat, you may need to have $2100 (or more) up front for the landlord when you sign your lease agreement... before he/she will hand over a key.
Mind you, there can easily be other fees and deposits required. That's something you'll have to discuss with each landlord or apartment building/complex manager in advance. These things can vary from one place to another within the same town or city.

If utilities are not included with the rent, you'll have to contact the local utilities companies to see what sort of deposit you'll need to place in order to have your utilities turned on. Most landlords will require that you have the utilities turned on so that there is heat in the apartment during cold weather. This is not out of concern for your comfort it is so their property (such as water pipes) won't be damaged by the cold. This is only in your best interest as well because they can sue you for repairs...which aren't cheap.
Which brings us to renters insurance...get it. Your landlord is not required to insure your belongings or pay for any damages you or your guests cause to their building, other tentants' belongings, or other tentants etc. They are also not responsible for damages their other tentants may cause to you or your belongings. If another tentant doesn't have insurance or the money to pay you for damages or hospital bills, etc. you could get stuck footing the tab out of your own pocket if you don't have your own insurance. If you throw a party & a drunken guest punches out your neighbor who has come to your door to complain about the noise or a guest leaves a cigerette burning in an ashtray left on the arm of your sofa OR you step out one morning to check your mail while frying some bacon and you stop to chat with a neighbor (or any one of a thousand ways accidental fires get started every day) you can be sued for it.
So like I said...always get renter's insurance. If you're smart enough to get car insurance... then be smart enough to get renter's.insurance.

What is a good workout that i could do in my bedroom, that lets me burn 500 calories a day and for how long?

I don't think you realize how hard it is to burn 500 calories a day by not doing an aerobic exercise.

However, the first question you need to answer is your weight. If you are bigger 200+, then push-ups can get your heart going. Push-ups are a plyometric exercise and will not give you the muscle that free weights will give you, but it is still very good if you are overweight because it gets the heart going. The same goes for crunches and sit-ups.

I strongly suggest free weights. A set for a couple hundred dollars will work you wonders. Yet, it seems like you want to lose weight. You need to start with your diet. Cut out all the pop/soda, cookies, chips, etc.

Your question is very open and to answer completely you need to provide more information. There is no way though that you will be able to burn 500 calories in your room without free weights. You will burn yourself out if you try and burn that many calories with sit-ups and push-ups and that is not good because you are not working other muscle groups.

keep your prized possessions at grammas/moms and sell everyhing else and use to purchse new once you are here.

I moved within the same complex. We literally moved across the parking lot. Literally. The apartment we are moving out of is on the first floor, with an attached garage that we had already put most of what we needed them to move in. The apartment we moved into was on the second floor.
I had 1.5 bedroom sets, two small TV's, a couch, a table, and a computer desk. And maybe 30-40 trash bags of clothes and my kids toys.
I hired a three man crew .

Last time I hired movers it took them under two hours with a 45 minute drive time.. this move is taking over four hours. How long should it have taken??

that sounds like an amazing idea..i love the fall aslo..well what you could do is stain alot of things..brown stained wood would look nice..brown is a good color to use for autumn..its the darker, less bold color to use..but you also want colors like red(not too bright of course, think of leaves), orange, yellow, and possibly just a little bit of a light, faded green..it would just be a matter of choosing the colors to go in the right areas to balance it all out..you could paint the walls brown(sounds bad i know but wait), with white trim on like windows, molding and floor paneling, and then maybe if you have anything wood in your room you can stain it brown, and then get things like red orange and yellow bed set/pillows, those colored lamps, night stands, curtains, pictures making the trim of different items be different colors..get a rug...the best colors to stick to tho besides the redish orangish and yellowish ones..are brown, tan, and dark red/maybe maroonish..i also like purple..it goes well with the other colors...but what you could do is buy stickers..they have these stickers that stick on your wall and there shaped as leaves..its pretty cool..ill leave a link to show u an example..you could try to put leaves on other things too like the side/top of a desk or your headboard..think of halloween..pumpkins, hay, corn, black..goodluck..i think its a great idea..i might steal it :] lol

i believe you need some things for the kitchen, you need to eat right? even if you're not planning to cook you still need kitchen items. i really cannot tell you what to buy because you never mention your budget.i assume you're in the US so maybe you can try to go to walmart or target or even bed bath and beyond visit these stores but don't buy yet. just make a list of things that you think you need. then try going to the thrift stores, yes the thrift stores. they have a lot of good stuff there and within a fraction of the prices at the stores i've mention. but just do this if you don't mind having used items. half of my stuff in my house came from yard sales and thrift stores. you just need to be patient and scour the store.
well if you have money to spend by all means go to macy's or other fine stores.

Basic rule of thumb is: 1/4 of what it cost when it was new.

The actual cost when it was new will depend on the quality of the wood and of the construction. For instance, are the drawer joints dovetailed? Is it solid wood (and what kind of wood), veneered, or painted particleboard? There is a huge possible price range of what such furniture might cost.

Used white bedroom furniture set, as described. Assume the parents are not wealthy and didn't buy high-end furniture. Probably $100-125 value for the whole lot. Less for damage, staining, chips, etc.

If you go to eBay, you can search for furniture that is within a certain mileage from your home. This is great because not only can you get great bargains on great furniture, but you don't have to pay shipping either. It is esp. perfect for someone of your age because you probably know plenty of strong, young men that will help you pick up the furniture and move it into your house for a few cases of beer. That sure beats paying moving costs! I decorated my apartment with fantastic Victorian furniture. It is all antiques from eBay that I had my friends pick up for the price of beer and a place to crash whenever they were in the city.

Sued them in small claims court & they were a no-show so I won by default. I still do not have any remuneration on this. The amount was $448.00. Hope you fare better.

What color should I paint my bedroom and bathroom?

They are connected so the colors will need to be complementary. My comforter set is brownish toupe with red and green embroidery. LOL, it sounds really gross from this description but its not. It's sort of "fancy", I guess, although it looks fine in my typical teenage room. However, the walls are all brown, which doesn't look so great with my bedding. It's like an explosion of one color of brown. Anyway, I'd like to repaint and want some color suggestions. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I would take your pillow cover, with a color matching your bedding, and match one of the colors.

It's up to you, if you want a warm room, or a cool feeling room.

If you dont like the brown, and dont like the feeling, You might not appeal to red. Even though red is an extremely warm color, that is vibrant, and elegant, and fancy. With a richer feel to it. Red is sensual, and can warm the heart, and well set the mood.

Green is a cool comfortable color, even darker shades of green can have a luxury feel to them, with a hint of elegance.
Green inspires energy, and is great to wake up too, it's brighter, when the sun hits it, it radiates a natural flow to the room, a very zen color...

You can do the red in the bedroom, and green in the bathroom. But you have to put the red somewhere in the bathroom also, like in the shower curtains, or, toilet coverings, or simple painted baskets, to keep magazines, or toiletries, in. Or a red matching color curtain.

Or vise versa, put the opposite color into the bedroom, accent your dresser, or night stand, or even lamp shades, in the green or red that matches the opposing room...

Bring the colors together.

Other colors wouldn't match very well. because other colors would clash with the opposite colores, so match what you have in your bedding you're attatched too. Hey it's only paint!

Ikea Mattress VS Standard Mattress?

If I ordered a bedroom set from ikea, does most of there bed frames work with a standard box-spring and mattress or does itt have to be from ikea too

It depends, Check the dimensions for the model that you bought (it should be on their website.) Some are made for the European market so they need to have the IKEA mattresses but others are made to US standard sizes and fit them fine. IKEA sells both Euro and US size mattresses nowadays. I have owned several IKEA bed frames in queen size. Two of them fit the Euro sized bedding and 3 of them fit standard US bedding. The bed I use now is an IKEA queen wooden canopy bed and fits a standard Beautyrest queen perfectly. The differences are only a few inches. If the bed is more a platform style with no footboard you can usually use either size. But if it has to fit down into the frame you may have problems using the US sizes.

Also, independent local mattress companies in most cities make there own mattresses. It is usually not all that much more money to have them custom make the size you need. I have done that to get mattresses to fit 100 year old family antique beds (which are smaller than modern beds).

Go to the library and ask the information desk about finding a book to help you price the pieces. I did and found out I had a table worth $11,000. I was shocked.(no I didn't sell it). You can also look under the furniture and try and find the manufacturer and then do a computer search. Once you find a price you can go to Craigslist or put it in an antique store on consignment. Or just put an ad in your local paper or Penny Saver.

I am having a complete bedroom set delivered - Queen bed, including mattress and boxspring, two bedside tables and a dresser. They will also be setting up the furniture in the room.

The room is down 3 flights of stairs.

I don't know how many guys they will be sending out to deliver the furniture - but how much should I tip them after they are done?

“Well, come on; let me show you around some more,” Insisted Mr Maxwell. The four youths followed the strange old man up the grand staircase, and on to the upstairs landing.
“Awesome!” Eclaire said, holding out her arms, as if she wanted to absorb everything in sight. “It’s so big!” (The landing wasn’t that big. It split off in two directions, but there was a corridor facing the stairs, that extended a long way).
Blitzen gave a discreet chuckle, but it wasn’t discreet enough. Eclaire poked him in the ribs with her elbow, giggling. “Oh, shut up. I didn’t mean it like that,” She smiled.
“Now. Down here are the bedrooms.” Mr Maxwell said, interrupting them, and gestured for them to follow him. But Silverus hung back for a second, staring down the long hallway which was teasing his curiosity. Finally he put his hands in his jeans pockets, and slowly began to walk down it.
On the walls there were paintings and portraits of old men in bowler hats and old women with frilly dresses and bonnets, all with round noses like a cartoon and ugly, deep wrinkles on their grimacing faces. There were several doors set into both walls. Silverus had had a peek inside a few, and, to his disappointment, they only turned out to stock rooms or spare bedrooms.
When all of a sudden, he came across another door. This one was different. It was very big, towering over him. It was a dark brown and seemed to have the outline of a diamond and a four-pointed star set into it, like one of those child’s toys where you have to find the missing pieces. He traced the outline, and it felt very cold on the tips of his long fingers.
