Help with a Parisian themed bedroom?

LEANNE

We are moving house next month and I want to make my daughters room special.
Her room is medium sized and a blank canvas at the minute. I don't have a budget to buy expensive one piece items but I'm not on a tight budget for the overall cost of the room.

So we were thinking Parisian. What sort of colors would you suggest and flooring? She is only 4 and likes whimsical, retro things so would like it to be in that style. Maybe the walls being more so like that and just bedding and furnishings to tie it in. Any ideas/suggestions would be great. I really don't know what colours to go for or how to dress the windows so please help me with this!

Thanks xx

Also we're in the UK

Answer
The old world charm of a Parisian bedroom theme has grown in popularity in the new millennium. Parisian-style bedroom decor adds worldly ambiance to the space. Find inspiration for your room's design in a Paris cafe, a Paris salon or the French countryside. French art, accessories, images and objects will give your bedroom a romantic Parisian feel.

Color Palettes

A typical Parisian theme color palette features neutral beige tones with gold. Other color schemes lean toward pink on pink, pink on black, or blue on green. Knowing the color palette first will help guide the design, enabling you to incorporate the appropriate colors throughout the bedroom. Parisian-inspired accents and a black-and-pink color scheme will create the chic French flair indicative of the heart of Paris. This bold color scheme can include other warm neutral tones, or can be kept exclusive.

Parisian Inspired Walls and Ceilings

Walls displaying Parisian-inspired art or accents will bring the theme to life. Parisian-inspired wall decal stickers set the tone of the design. Eiffel Tower-themed wallpaper and faux chandeliers create other possibilities for the walls and ceilings. Horizontal and vertical stripes are also commonly found in Parisian bedrooms. A mismatched photo wall displaying French art or personal pictures in various types of frames will create a bohemian Paris boutique feel.

Furniture

Parisian-style bedroom furniture functions as a focal point in the design. A black or dark brown canopy bed frame creates a more contemporary look, while a distressed wrought-iron bed frame recalls a classic Parisian cafe. Vintage Versailles-inspired tables, desks and chairs with skinny and sculpted legs also help complete the look.

Accessories

Parisian-inspired accessories will make the theme truly come to life in your bedroom. One accessory every Parisian themed bedroom needs is the Eiffel Tower. Available Eiffel Tower accessories include pillows, wall decals, bedding, clocks, candle holders, sculptures, photos and wall art. Hang paintings, prints or posters of Paris scenes for an authentic feel. Incorporate a floating shelf or deep windowsill displaying French art and accessories for a finishing touch.

I'd like some general Info on setting up a neon Tetra tank?

Student

I'm setting up a neon tetra tank in my bedroom and would like to have a blue light on it. What plants do best with blue lights, how long should I leave the white and/or blue light on..etc...any info on that would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I've read that 5-6 tetra's is a good amount for a 10g?
I should add, I know how to cycle and set up tanks. (this is my second tank, I'd just like more info on lighting and plants.)

Answer
Heres some info
The Neon tetra - Forum & Guide on care, feeding, breeding
Pieces of bogwood and plants (dead or alive) will help to keep the water acidic, the bogwood will also release tannins into the water which will give a yellowish/brown tint to the colour of the water, providing these conditions should bring out the best colouration from the Paracheirodon innesi, subdued lighting and using a darker substrate will also help for the best possible colouration.
Optimum colouration for these fish is crucial as they are a shoaling fish and will communicate with their colours, if they are kept in unsuitable conditions then their colours will fade decreasing their ability to communicate to each other as well.
Tank size
Even though Neon tetras are very small fish they will still need a tank that is large enough to house 1 inch of fish per US gallon of water (approximately 0.7 cm â 1 cm of fish length per liter), if you are keeping a large group of these, always bear this in mind. A 5 gallon tank will only be capable of housing 5 neon tetras so such a tank really isnât suitable; To keep the minimum of 10 fish you will need at least a 10 gallon tank. Raising this specie in a fish bowl must be avoided unless a bowl is large enough (50 liters, 13 US gallons, 11 Imperial gallons) with plants, rocks and wood that designate orientation points.
Are Neon tetras fish for beginners?
Many aquatic stores sell these as beginners fish but this is a very bad practice as they mislead customers into thinking that they are an easy species to keep and are very hardy. This is just not true, they should never be added to a new tank setup, they should only be added to a tank that is fully cycled and the water has matured for at least two months. Often keepers will buy these fish and check the tank the next morning only to find that some of the neon tetras have disappeared!
Temperament and Tank mates Generally, Neon tetras are very shy which is noticeable if you keep only 2 or 3 of them. Roots of this behavior originate from their natural environment, size, position in the food chain - these fish are not predators, instead they try to group themselves in large shoals and hide from predators in roots or fallen wood in the rivers of South America which are naturally full of fallen wood, roots of trees and plants. Such an environment offers a lot of hiding places. If you place a few Neon tetras to a completely empty tank (that's filled with water only), they will suffer which leads to diseases and premature death.
Neon's are compatible with peaceful species of fish that are not a lot bigger than themselves. They do well with Corydoras, other species of the smaller Tetras and Rasboras. I have often seen them kept with the incorrect tank mates such as Acara's, Paradise fish, Oscar's and the keepers couldn't understand why they are disappearing with no trace, if they did their homework and researched the species they would know why. Peaceful Pleco's are generally good tank mates for Neon tetras, even loaches such as Yoyo loach, Zebra loach, Horseface loach or Tiger hillstream loach can be kept with these tetras. Guppies, Mollies or Platies can be raised with Neon's too.
If you already run a community tank, feed your fish and turn off lights before adding your Neon's into the tank.

How can I redecorate my bedroom to make it elegantly romantic?

mellowello

Nothing tacky please.

Answer
Do your prep. Put the drop cloth or other on the floor, shake and mix the paint (using stir sticks); have all other items in a room nearby.
You will begin painting with the (Maroon or Candy Apple Red) paint; start on an outer wall (facing driveway) etc. You'll only be using this color on the wall to that side.
Next you'll will paint the remaining walls in the (Plum) color. The ceiling can be in white or painted the same as the walls...some say that white makes the room appear that the ceiling is high up, while colors may lower the ceiling.
Once the darker wall has dried, you can add the border; you want the border in the direct center of the wall, all the way across. Therefore, you'll need to first measure it, and mark the corners with a dark ink pen. You may need to cut some of the wallpaper, in order for it to fit in the areas that a window may stand in your way...more instructions.
Cut the wallpaper, then lay it flat and totally coat it with the glue, carefully pick it up...folding it so that the glue area is visible (making it easier to handle); walk over to the wall and place one edge on the pen mark (carefully start smoothing out) while going across...a slightly damp cloth can be used to help.
Paint all the trim around the doors and the doors white, including closet door, around the windows and the base board.
You can then decorate your walls after the paint has dried, be sure to wait several hours before doing so. (See Tips Below) on items on decorating.

Tips
It has been said that you should never hang family photos in your bedroom that you'll feel like eyes are watching you; it is best to hang family photos in your living room or hallway.
Oriental Fans are always a pleasing touch to add class to your walls; plus they go really well in your bedroom. There is a (home for touring) in Houston that has fans on the ceilings...they call it the ceiling fan room, funny huh?
You can, also, spray paint an (extra large) wicker fan (jet black) (using glossy paint), add a beautiful ribbon along with an artificial red rose to it; then hang it above your bed...it truly adds a romantic appeal to the bedroom...pictures can be hung on each side of it, or some oriental fans.
You can add several elegant looking throw pillows to the bed (along with some dainty ones) giving your bed that special touch.
A fabulous looking throw at the foot of the bed is always a nice (such as two elephants in love) as an exsample...maybe even a leopard print.
A few stuffed animals on your bed, such as a (Begal Tiger) or a few (Teddy Bears) really gives your bedroom that sense of adventure, and adventures can be romantic.
Look for some unusual looking flowers for dresser, and add some scented candles to your night table.
You can hang some nice Mini Blinds in (black) to darken the room; over the shades add some (white) Lacy Curtains.
A (Multi Colored Comforter) will work great to off set the room.
You can add several nice throw rugs, it will add class to the total look of any room...maybe even a nice leopard rug.
musical Insturments in regards to the Border is a wise choice, for it has that romantic appeal to it.

Furniture Store in Houston, TX?

Mrs. Libra

Is there another furniture store like The Room Store in Houston, TX?

Thxs

Answer
The furniture brands the room store carries are similar to levitz furniture but in the same price point ashley furniture home store is simmilar. If just looking for a better price go back to the room store and try to find the manufacture and style number. On a sofa it is under the cushion on a bedroom set behind the item on the back if you are lucky they put the item on the price tag check the back of the tag or just ask who make this item.

Then go online and look up the manufacture you will find alot of places offering better prices online. If you prefer to buy local in the search select local listings or on the manufactures site under dealer locator type in your zip for other stores that carry this brand. As an example I saw furniture I liked from Mor Furniture and found the brand was called Aico Furniture I just looked it up online and found a place that sold it to me for less and all they sold was aico furniture.

Remember Jerry Seinfeld's apartment set on Seinfeld. How big is that compared to real apartments in Manhattan?

PER92

People say affordable apartments in Manhattan are small. I'm just curious how they compare to the Seinfeld apartment seen on the show.

Answer
There are two things you have to consider:

1) Seinfeld was fantasy, nobody wants to watch a TV show set in 600 sqft studio apartment over a Chinese restaurant. His "apartment" was a decent size for Manhattan.

2) Seinfeld was filmed in the early 90s, back then, rent was far less than what it is today. His apartment in the 90s might have gone for $1,800 or so.
Today, that same apartment, a one bedroom, elevator building, intercom system, would probably start at $2,700âand that's if you're lucky.

My apartment is in the Upper West Side, 2,200 sqft, two bedroom elevator, doorman, intercom, private terrace and private video surveillance, on-site gym, and it's $4,200 a month to give you an idea of running Manhattan rates.

Depending on what you're willing to sacrifice, which part of Manhattan you're willing to live, and how hard you look (I'll be honest, I didn't spend near as much time as I should have viewing and looking at apartments), you could find an apartment for much less. However, finding anything under $2,000 that isn't in the projects is a Godsend.

My husband told me we may be PCSing to Germany. He put in his reenlistment for Germany. What CAN'T I bring?

Melissa

We have a full house of things. Patio Table, Washer/Dryer, Dining table, Kitchen Table, Living room set, Entertainment center, Two Vehicles. Three bedroom sets. You know normal stuff. Not to mention BBQ pit lawnmower, water hoses, plants in pottery. I need to know what I will not be able to take so I can sell or put in storage.

Answer
Electrical equipment: voltage in the US is 110 Volt, in Germany is 220 Volt. You have to check if your equipment works with 220 V (Personal Computer do). Read the descriptions or check the backside of there is usually a label which e.g. says: 110 - 220 V. If not: put it in storage.

Germans usually live in appartments which are smaller then in the US: typical is 800 - 1200 square feet. If you rent a house the gardens are significantly smaller ( 800 - 1500 sf) then in the US, so you probably do not need the stuff for the gardens: mower, tools, Patio table, water hoses a.s.o.

Plants: everything "living" like plants, vegetables a.s.o. would have to go into quarantine, same as when coming to the US (risk of importing deseases).

Bedrooms: german appartments are calculated in "rooms", typically is: one living room, one bedroom, one bedroom for kids (or home office) = would be a 3 room, one bathroom (for all), a kitchen. (Bath and kitchen are not calculated as rooms). Typical is a 3 or 4 room appartment. Houses usually have additional rooms, a cellar or a space under the roof as storage rooms. Utilities are in the cellar or integrated into the kitchen (e.g. dishwasher, washer, dryer are very uncommon, they are integrated into the washer). Some app. come with kitchen and utilities included, some come "naked".

I would limit my stuff to the things you need to live: cloth, furniture, electrical stuff (if running on 220 V). If necesarry you can buy additional things in Germany, IKEA is very popular but there are other furniture stores, prices are similar to the US.

You also have to consider that the transport by container needs aound 4 weeks from the US to Germany (house to house) and you will need a "starter kit" in Germany.

Idea for Painting a BEDROOM Set in DISNEY PRINCESS THEME?

WellaTeam

HI guys I had a question, we bought a really nice bedroom set/hutch /desk set for my girls bedroom, and I need ideas on how to paint it in a disney princess theme?

My kids room is painted in lilac/pink with all disney decorations, does anyone have any ideas on what color to paint the bedroom set?

the set is now in all white, it needs to be painted because it has a few scratches, what color do you think will match? any ideas would be appreciated this will be such a fun project for me! Thanks in advance

Answer
A nice pale green colour would be lovely. It would compliment the lilac and pink already in the room.
Paint the furniture green with white accents, IE. doorknobs and antique white rubbed in along the borders of the Drawers and edges of the dresser, Headboard, and Chair etc.
Crystal knobs would go nicely as well on the dresser pulls/knobs.
You could paint a pretty floral in the centre of the drawers, Headboard etc. with these 4 colours.
It will give you a sense of continuity.

In my opinion.I would not repeat the actual Disney decorations on the furniture as that may look like overkill.
It would be far more princess like to paint an extension of what princesses rooms should look like.
You can pick up pretty floral motifs or any type for that matter,
in stencil form at Home Depot or a good paint store.
This is a very easy way and almost foolproof to achieving perfect painting images.
If you can afford to purchase Stencils with at least 2 to 4 Overlays the better and more professional the look will be.
It will have far more dimension to the artwork.
Another idea is to purchase stencils of your choice that have 2 overlays and create a raised plaster effect in white.
This technique is extremely easy and stunning once done.

I have supply you with some websites that you can browse through for inspiration and ideas as well as some instructions to the ideas that I have outlined for you.

How to Make Stencils for Painting below;
http://www.ehow.com/how_1602_make-stencils-painting.html
An important tip about stencil cutting is not lifting up your Exacto knife once you've started cutting. It makes for a sharper edge. Also, use a piece of glass as your cutting surface. This has really helped me and doesn't damage anything. Purchased an Exacto knife with a swiveling blade. Wow...this tool is so excellent makes me want to buy stock in the company...You need to buy Mylar film to create and cut out your own desgins. You will need a repositional Spray adhesive like the one made by Scotch.
You spray this on the back of the stencil and then place on the object that you will paint in.

What theme for bedrooms?

RHCP

I am planning on moving soon to a three bedroom house and want the bedrooms to be different.
I live alone for now I'm only 21 and am kind of obsessing over decorating my first house. Anyways I've come up with a lot of ideas that would look cool I think I just want to know other people's opinions/suggestions. Feel free to add ideas :)

For my bedroom (Master) - I want to stick with neutral colors with maybe a bright paisley comforter
Like this maybe http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=121723&
Light gray walls with white trim and dark wood floors.

For spare bedroom #1 - Tans/browns and maybe a little green for more of an earthy room.

Spare bedroom #2 - A music themed room. Maybe one red accent wall with a grey textured wallpaper section and the rest of the walls white or gray. Then decorate it with rolling stones magazine covers behind the headboard and put my piano in this room with maybe some red leather chairs.

I've also thought about making one room sort of beach themed. With wicker decorations and light blues and cream colors.
Tell me what you think... or pick what themes you would do if you had a clean slate.
What theme is overdone?
And both rooms wouldn't really be a theme I guess just a color scheme. The music one was the only really themed one. And an office would be a good idea too. A beach themed office sounds so relaxing.

Answer
This theme thing is so overdone.
Not everything needs a theme.
Your ideas are great.
A beach themed room is always great. It is fresh and crisp.

First decide upon what you want the function of the room to be.You want one room as a music room.
Do you need an office ? That would work well with the beachy accents.
How about a day bed in that room and a desk for your computer work.

Suggestions for bedroom colour(s) to match furniture etc...?

Brennie

Main bedroom: Consists of oak flooring, dark leather kingsize bed with large square stitched leather headboard and two dark rosewood chest of drawers. The bed with furniture takes up alot of the floor space.
Bedding, curtains/blinds need to be changed as well so I have basically a blank canvas.
I would like something dramatic instead of a white or cream but need help....can anybody suggest some good colour combinations?????

Answer
Browns, tans, blues and greens would look good, I think. First, find the comforter that you want to use and choose the paint color from it. Here are some I hope you like:

Which are the best brands of furniture- particularly bedroom furniture?

Brianne H

Hi, I'm trying to find out what some of the best brands of furniture are. Would you say Ethan Allen, Broyhill, and Pottery Barn? Or would you recommend something else. I'm looking into getting a new bedroom set and I want to know what the top brands are (as far as name recognition, brand appeal, quality, etc.). I'd appreciate any helpful responses you can give me. Thanks a bunch.

Answer
I worked for Ethan Allen, about 4 years ago.....They have always had the best furniture.....For generations, all of their furniture was made in the USA, until recently, most of it is still made in US, some however is being imported from China.....I still think EA is the best and its an investment, just make sure you will love this furniture, because you will have to live with it for a while....Best of luck....

How do I sand my Ethan Allen furniture to a natural finish?

Mnb T

I have a nice Ethan Allen bedroom set from the 1970s that it is in excellent condition (structurally), but the finish on the furniture is scuffed up, dull, and just way too dark for my taste. What is the easiest process for sanding this down to a natural finish?

Answer
I use Strypeeze to remove majority of finish. It removes every kind of finish I ever used it own. Then I sand the small spots it didn't quite get. Most manufactured furniture uses very thin veneer wood on top of secondary wood so a sanding mistake can severely damage a piece of furniture. I use a random orbit sander and fine grain paper. Takes most of the work out of it too.

Set the price of oil ?

[jax_]

This has got to be politics.
When you set the price of oil you limit oil's availability. Thus the price of gasoline goes up as the supply goes down. And the price of gas goes up again. Having worked out in the domestic [USA] oil fields this summer I note that every little well in America is now pumping reducing the dependency on foriegn oil. In fact "wildcats" and farmers are out there "wringing out their oil rags" trying to get every drop available to market. Which pays an average price much lower than what we pay for foriegn oil. Within the past two years the price for a barrel of domestic crude has riased and lowered affecting the price of gasoline very little. The current system should be left unhindered as it has actually reduced the pump price for gasoline.

Anyone else agree?

Answer
This is true; however, there are other fringe areas to the problem. In the US we have a major housing crunch at the moment. Contributing to that is the fact that the highest paying jobs are in the metropolitan areas. That is also where the cost of living is much higher so far too many people live 50, 60 even 100 miles from work and must commute from the less expensive 'bedroom communities' to work and back. Where I live there are people who commute by airplane from the Sierra Nevada mountains to San Francisco each day. As the price of oil goes up so does the expense of commuting. People must choose to take lesser paying jobs where they live or give up their homes and move to the more expensive areas. In California we have the highest gas taxes in the nation. We cannot afford another tax on gasoline. I'm glad we are using our own oil and are not so dependent on the middle east.

Bedroom ideas for 3 boys?

J

My three sons are going to be sharing one bedroom. They are aged 6 1/2, 4 and 4. The bedroom that is going to be theirs is pretty large (14-4tf X 12ft) and has a bathroom and a large closet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to organize and arrange the three kids in one room? I would to give them some space away from each other. Any themes are appreciated as well. Thanks!
I'm going to put this question in the parenting section too, in case anyone has ever been in my situation.

Answer
I like the idea of two sets of twin bunk beds, also. In particular, this is better than:

-three separate beds eating all your floor space.
-a double on bottom, twin on top bunk that would sleep all of them now but they can't stay this way for long...how long can two boys sleep together in a double bed?
-a loft-type system that can be dangerous if you don't execute it properly, and expensive if you buy a kit or have it done professionally.
-PLUS you get room for a buddy to sleep over.
-AND you have room for the twins to be at ground level and your older son to be up top like the big boy he is. As they grow up and top bunk is more inconvenient than cool, and anyone can be up there safely, they can rotate the sleeping arrangements.

As for storage spaces, I would say like with the beds, you need to go up where you can. Just don't put things so high that kids can't safely reach and do for themselves. As they get taller and more coordinated you will have more freedom to build up.

I don't know how you feel about individuality and where you draw the lines. I think each kid should definitely be allowed his own things, and personality, of course this is true. But you might consider some things community property to be stored together and shared among them...some of their toys and books and media, more expensive stuff like their TV and game systems and maybe some sports equipment...

One thing I would do if I had three young boys that close in age is extend this principle to socks and maybe even underwear too. I would gather up every one of their current socks and toss them out...and replace them with 50-60 or so pairs of IDENTICAL cheap white socks for them all to share. Keep dirty in the bathroom in a big roughtote or maybe even a kitchen style wastebasket with a swinging lid, labelled boys whites...wash them all together once a week in hot with bleach to keep them sanitary and bright...dump them unfolded into another container for storage of clean. This eliminates the drama of pairing up socks and sorting among people, and the waste if any get ruined or go missing. You might keep another (smaller) collection of identical black dress socks. Clean out and replace everything every year, maybe in the spring when you are spring cleaning and organizing, and when you aren't already saddled with back to school expenses or holiday gifts. This might be a hundred dollars or so expense every year. A small price to pay for such convenience all year. I think you can get at least another five years out of the collective sock arrangement. You might have to abandon the underwear clause a little sooner hahahh.

As for decor, I would go with a larger theme for the room, and each kids personal things...their dresser, their desk, their backpack, can be done in a particular element of that theme to both express themselves and distinguish their stuff. A bit like color coding but a little more descriptive I guess.

Animal themes abound...could do the room in the big theme and each kid decorates their stuff with an animal...you could do farm (duck, goat, horse) pets (dog, cat, hamster) dinosaurs (bronto, stego, pterydactyl) bugs (grasshopper, spider, bee) zoo (zebra, elephant, giraffe) etc. You could do sports...do the room to look like a stadium or locker room or sportscasters studio, or hang jerseys and display sports equipment. Each kid gets a separate team...or same sport, each kid rocks pro-college-their school, or each kid decorates with a different sport. You could do music...album covers or music notes, etc...and each kid gets a different singer or band or rapper, or each kid gets a different instrument. You could do games...decorate with vintage game boards, and get lamps and furniture that resemble game pieces. Each kid could be cards, dominoes, and dice. You could do a cartoon room...each kid decorates with a different cartoon. Or do a Disney room and each kid gets a different character. You could do bright colors and everyone gets a different shape...circles, squares, triangles.

How to decorate rooms of our adopted kids?

Melissa

So basically, I am 31 and my husband is 32. He is a doctor and I am a teacher. Together we have 4 children of our own, Jonas (8), Charles (6), Edward (5) and Alice (0). I am currently on maternity leave.

Last week, my husbands sister passed away. We have never met her but we were informed that we were the next of kin to her three sons, Mason (16), Louis (14) and Oscar (10). We have offered to take them In and care for them.

We have been through the procedure correctly, they are all in schools and will be flying to the UK from New Zeland next week.

They are bringing clothes and toys. Luckily our house is 7 bedrooms, therefore the boys will each get there own room.

The question is, we only know a little about them and have no idea how to decorate their rooms.

So, how do we decorate their rooms? Money is no object? The rooms are all average sized. Please attach pictures and descriptions.

Mason: 16 - He Is head boy in his current school and is very academic. All his teachers say he is lovely, they say he is confident but kind and gentle. He does allot of water sports for fun.

Louis: 14 - The opposite of his brother, he is apparently a trouble maker who can never sit still. He is loud and likes messing around with his friends. He does athletics and running.

Oscar: 10 - Oscar is very shy and clever. He works hard and loves animals of all kinds. He is apparently loving and sweet.

Thanks!

Every child needs and loves his own special spot, whether he or she has to share it with a sibling, maybe even more than one sibling, or is blessed enough to have a room all to themselves.

As a mother who has adopted three children from the foster care system, I've found that setting up a bedroom was different for each one of them. My first adopted child came to live with us as a newborn infant. For this baby, we fixed up a crib in our own bedroom. Decorating for an infant is easy, you just need a warm bed and some bright toys to catch his or her eyes. We hung a mobile over the crib, and put some cute pictures on the wall. He slept contentedly there for many months.

Our second adopted child was a very verbal little girl who came to live with us at the age of two and a half years, continued in our home as a foster child for the next twenty months, and was finally adopted by us when she was four years old. In the beginning, we fixed up the bottom bunk in our older, biological daughter's room, but we soon realized this was not going to work. In the trauma of being removed from her birth mother, one of the ways she acted out was to destroy whatever she could secretly, and sometimes openly, get her hands on. She ripped wallpaper off the walls during the night, colored on the bed and the sheets with markers, and drew on everything she could get her hands on. It didn't take long to realize this arrangement wasn't going to work, as she was destroying our older daughter's much loved room. When another foster child, a six month old girl, came to live with us soon after she did - one who went back to her family a year and a half later - we ended up moving our already adopted son and the two younger girls into the master bedroom, and turned the loft into a bedroom for us. We gave each child a section of this large room for their own. Both of the girls were still having visits with their birth families at the time, so for them, I fixed a wall with pictures of their birth family. The older girl, now our daughter, and her birth mother liked to exchange real (though deceased) butterflies, so I decorated her part of the room with lace butterflies hanging from the ceiling. On the wall just about her headboard, I stapled another lace doily with butterflies on it, framed some of the butterflies her birth mother had given her and hung these on this piece of lace, along with a picture of her mother. These hang on the wall still today, and since our adoption is somewhat open with her birth mother and she still receives butterflies, we continue to add to it.

Our third adopted child was the full sibling brother of our little girl. He moved in with us the day before he was six months old. Our other little foster daughter had left us just less than a month before, so setting up a space for this child was simple: I sat back up the crib I had taken down in tears just three short weeks back, and made ready for my new son. Although he had a crib in the room with his big brother and sister, he slept in a port a crib in my bedroom for many weeks, while he adjusted to his new home and family.

Old hollywood themed bedroom?

Lalala

I decided I want my bedroom to be old Hollywood themed (think Marilyn Monroe). But I can't figure out what to do. I have a medium sized room in the shape of a square, yellow walls with white trimming, and antique cherrywood furniture. Any ideas on the colors, bed set, patterns, and decorations? Thanks!

Answer
Wall color- rose, pink or pale peach
Get a Hollywood bed (this is a legit type of bed! search it on Google to see pics)
Big vanity table with a lightbulb-trimmed mirror and a vintage chair of some sort..you might want to have a collection of crystal perfume bottles for the top :)
Chandelier
Satin bedding
Throw feather boas over things
Rotary phone
White faux fur rug
Framed black and white photos of Marilyn or Jean Harlow or whoever you want
Put on red lipstick and kiss a little lip print onto one of your mirrors (ps you should have lots of mirrors), I've done this in my room and it really looks fabulous

Have fun decorating. xxo

Set my sights on this lovely Maine Coon cat, but does a big cat like that need a big house?

I live in an 800 sq ft 2 bedroom apartment, and I know this type of cat gets rather large. I do not plan to let any cat I own outdoors, would this be a bad choice for an indoor cat in a small apartment?

Answer
No, there is no need to have a big house. I own a Maine Coon and he is incredibly sweet and low maintenance. Not all Maine Coons become larger than other cats. All they need is a comfy place to sleep and lots of love. As long as there is some type of exercise available you'll be fine. All it will need is a play mouse or a string to chase. This should not be a problem though because Maine Coons are naturally playful and energetic.

Santa Barbara vs. San Diego cost of living?

Elizabeth

Hi I'm going to be a senior this year in high school, and I'm just trying to do some research for college.
I'm pretty set on going to either SB or SD for school. I'm most likely going to go to community college in either of these cities so I don't have to worry about tuition and getting accepted and what not. I have 2 friends that are trying to decide which city to go to also that I would have as roommates, so I was just wondering which city is more expensive to live in? Like 1 or 2 bedroom apartment costs (rent), utility bills, etc. Thanks so much!

Answer
I go to SB, and it is pretty expensive here.
Mostly all students live in Isla Vista (right beside the campus) if they're not at the residence halls.

I am renting a 4-bedroom house with some friends.
We have eight people altogether and our rent cost about $5000 per month.
For my part, I will be paying $600 for the rent, $50 for utilities.

There are cheaper apartments and places, although the range of rent usually is around $600-$800 per month. You might get some good deals where the landlord pays for the utilities.

School apartments are a bit cheaper (starting from $550), but you have to sign up for it early because there's a limited amount.

I want to move to San Diego but will being a radiologic technologist be enough?

Spud

My heart is truly set on San Diego, for I have been there twice in my life. Im 18 from Chicago and I want to become a Radiologic Technologist. Im going to finish school here and I was just wondering how the job market is doing in the San Diego area(specifically medical field)? Also if I found a job there, what would be the cost of living for a nice area? Here's a website that shows how much they make in California.

https://www.asrt.org/media/pdf/research/wss2007/wss07annualcompensation.pdf

Thanks a bunch!
I forgot to add these but if I were to move there I'd move in a 2 bed apartment or condo for rent. probably buy a car out there nothing too fancy yet something to get me around. cost of gas? i'll be single so yeah...

Answer
Husband is an Xray tech, and so far [knock on wood] still has a steady job...we live in L.A. county, which has the highest unemployment in all of California. If you google hospitals in San Diego, you can check the "employment opportunities" and get an idea of the current job availability. Seriously, I don't think you'll have a problem with getting a job and pay for cost of living out here. The only obstacle I can foresee would be your lack of work experience, being a new grad. At the current hospital my husband works, when he was an xray student he did one of his rotations there, and once he graduated they ended up giving him a job, he's been there ever since.

The medical field is not going anywhere unless the world suddenly becomes germ and accident free...true, there have been plenty of layoffs and hiring freezes, but then shortly after those same hospitals will turn around and re-hire newcomers for a lesser pay, which is how they reconfigure the budget.

As far as rentals, well, a lot can change by the time you get out this way... Like I stated we live in LA county, but we visit SD several, and I mean SEVERAL times a year...it's our home away from home... In fact we are heading down there again tomorrow for our little boy's SeaWorld B-day... ...I have seen a 2 bedroom "for rent" for, I think about $1100 (I think) in the Old Town area of San Diego (their historic Mexican village) ...Which, to me, $1100 is VERY good for a 2 bed in So California. I remember when we passed by the rental, I thought "Wow, that's really good for San Diego." ...Also, what if you just get a "studio" apt since it's only you...then once you are more comfortable and get to know the area a little better, you can upgrade to something a little more suitable.. ...and gas prices are about $3.60/gal right now...but it ALWAYS fluctuates, and it also depends on which gas station you stop off at...the stations just off the freeways are always higher in price.

surround sound for ps3?

kc17170

What is a good surround sound for my PS3 that costs under $200?

(whole surround set)

Answer
When it comes to cheap surround sound, the best you will do is to get an audio receiver, not an audio / video (a/v) receiver. Basically, only your sound will come from the reciever, not the video (you will hook your video straight to the TV.

They are hard to find (got mine for the bedroom at Wal-mart), as most everything now are A/V receivers, but if you do some searching, you should be able to find one. The one I got at Wal-mart was a Pioneer for $199 and came with all 6 speakers. That was a few years ago and was on sale, so I don't know if they still have them.

I have 2 surround sound systems. The one in the living room (where the PS3 is hooked up) is a Sony HDMI A/V receiver that I payed about $2000 for. The $199 Pioneer system in my bedroom was meant to be cheap because I wanted surround sound in there, and it actually sounds just as good as my high-end Sony one. Here is the Pioneer unit I have ( http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Pioneer-SX-315-Audio-Multi-Channel-Receiver-Refurbished/2183155/product.html ), and I would suggest something like it. It is more than plenty to handle your PS3 gaming needs.

here are 2 pics on my room.

Answer
You could do a collage or a painting of something like a city view. If you're ever seen the 'view' out the window of the 'Seattle apartment' on 'Frasier,' it was all done with set design; I've read that there WAS no such view in Seattle. But it looks real, doesn't it?? All you'd need would be a rectangular stretched canvas. Tall buildings would be super easy to paint; just tall rectangles with bright rectangles or squares for windows. Have fun!

I might be moving to Seattle from the Twin Cities. Apartment recommendations?

Tom

I am considering moving to the Seattle area if I am offered a job at a great company in Bellevue. I'm a single professional, earnings in the mid $80's. Would prefer a 2 bedroom apartment since I'd be coming from a 1200 sq foot townhome.
How would the drive be from downtown Seattle to Bellevue? What are the rent ranges ($$'s) both in downtown and the 'burbs between Seattle and Bellevue?

Answer
the drive time from bellevue to seattle is generally i would say 15 minutes with minimal traffic... with rush hour traffic that can be a completely different story. i would estimate the drive in rush hour over the 520 bridge to be anywhere from 45 min-1.5 hours. you would commute back and forth between the 2 probably over the 520 or I-90 bridge, depending on where your apartment will be. you'd probably take 520 floating bridge if you lived more north near lake union, queen anne, seattle center area. you'd probably take the I-90 bridge if you lived in more of the pioneer square, belltown area.

rent in seattle is pricey, but this is also coming from a recent college grad. your earnings could probably get you a very nice place. most of my friends that live in 1 bedroom apts downtown pay anywhere from 1300-1800 a month. do you want to live in seattle because you perfer the whole big city/downtown feel? if you aren't dead set on that i'd suggest looking for places on the eastside closer to bellevue. the whole eastside/surrounding bellevue area is very, very nice and a lot of them have newer townhouse developments. some places you might want to look in are issaquah, kirkland or maybe even redmond.

I prefer Wal-Mart online for the desk, since that's the only store we have where I live. I would really appreciate if someone could help match a desk to this bedroom set as that is what I have now.

I have a lot of things that I need to sell before an international move. What is the fastest way to sell them?

Anonymous

Answer
Sell things in bundles, like an entire bedroom set, living room, kitchen, for a good price, saving buyers money. Advertise on craigslist, thrifty newspaper, church, friends, flyers. Get everyone involved.

Pay someone to pass out flyers with what you have to sell and have a one day sale only and see if you can generate a lot of buyers.

Much luck.

surround sound for ps3?

Cute bedroom ideas!!!!!?

malarie

I am 12 years old, and I think my room needs to be organized.
I want organization ideas and decorating tips. Please help me!!!

PS: My room is:

-Jonas Brothers posters on the wall by my bed
-I have modern white cubbies about 5 ft tall and wide
-My bedroom set is really babyish. its all burly and feminine, and i like modern stuff better
This set includes:
Desk
Bed
Dresser
Nightstand
Things I like:
Jonas Brothers poster,
Mirror wall closet,
Big comfy chair

I have lavender paint and white carpet.

Please help!!

Answer
I have come up with a few decorating, organizing, and refurbishing tips and ideas.

If you are looking for more storage, check out PB Teen. If it is too expensive, Walmart and Target are definitely worth checking out too. Here are some things I found for storage...

This one is from PBTeen, and comes in darker woods if you don't want white or if it is too feminine-http://www.pbteen.com/products/p1588/index.cfm?pkey=cbookcases%2Dshelves
PBTeen carries a lot more storage units, so check them out at PBTeen.com

This one is from Target. It probably matches your cubbies-
http://www.target.com/3-Open-Shelves-White/dp/B0002I6FGI/qid=1236718985/ref=br_1_4/175-8965122-4682931?ie=UTF8&node=13814321&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=13814321&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=6

Decorations are a big key in decorating. If you are planning to keep your wall color, here are some that would match...

This is a photo frame that you can hang on your wall and put in various pictures. You can get it in various colors. White would be more modern-http://www.pbteen.com/products/p2490/index.cfm?pkey=cphoto%2Dframes%2Dmirrors

Definitely try wire letters. They are very modern and look great!-
http://www.pbteen.com/products/p2678/index.cfm?pkey=cwall%2Daccessories%2Ddecoration

I also found you a "big comfy chair"-http://www.pbteen.com/products/p649/index.cfm?pkey=clounge%2Dseating
or you can try-
http://www.pbteen.com/products/p3815/index.cfm?pkey=clounge%2Dseating

Now these are all things you need to buy. If you are looking for do it yourself projects and ideas that are cheap and easy, here are some:

Make a collage-
Print out fun pictures off the internet. Cut out pictures from magazines. Use Jonas Brothers pictures. Pictures of your friends. Etc. Cut them all out in different shapes and sizes and paste them to a poster board or tac them to a bulletin board. Make various ones and hang them all around your room! You can even make a whole one dedicated to the Jonas Brothers that only has pictures of the Jonas Brothers.

Repaint your current bedroom set-
First get the okay from your parents. Since a whole other bedroom set would be to expensive, try repainting your furniture a crisp black (very modern) or white (more traditional). Of course you will need help from your parents, but it will totally five a huge lift and new feel to your room. Also as a suggestion, if you paint the furniture black, try this comforter:http://www.pbteen.com/products/p3815/index.cfm?pkey=clounge%2Dseating

Overall, just make your bedroom creative in a way that exresses your personality. Good luck! Hope I helped :)

trying to think of a big toy that my boys can share to lay away for Christmas?

Q. I have a 3 year old and also a 15 month old, they share toys and they also share a bedroom. I am getting an early jump on Christmas shopping and plan on doing a layaway this weekend because I also have a 15 year old daughter and so to ensure my kids all 3 have a good one and money being tight, I have to start early. I am trying to think of a really fun big toy for my boys to share and yesterday my 3 year old along with my 15 year old gave me a really good idea. He was using a plastic coffee can lid and a plastic spoon and pretending to serve my daughter food. And so my daughter suggested that we should get them a little kitchen to share. She has another brother, (my ex husband) and says he has one and loves it. But I am unsure if it would be too girly and sissy like to buy 2 little boys a toy like this. I know that might sound silly, but my husband is very masculine and I am not sure if I suggest a kitchen if he will like it or not. He loves shopping for these little guys for christmas and it's because he can guy cool boy toys for them. Would this be an appropriate toy/gift for 2 little boys? Does anyone have any other really good ideas? I'm open to anything that stays in doors, as we live in an apartment right now and do not have a yard for outdoor toys. Thanks.

Answer
If you want a cooking thing for them, they have those play grill sets.Nothing more manly than bbq'n.

I need drapes and a duvet cover, & need to find a cheap place to buy some OR fabric.?

dasielady

I moved into an apartment with seafoam green bedroom walls. I can't paint. I have all dark wood. I have a duvet, that needs a breathable duvet cover. I also need curtains for the windows. I have a $150 budget for everything. Where can I A) buy a quality yet inexpensive set/peices that could match, or B) where can I buy cheap fabric for such? I live in Milwaukee, but could go as far as chicago or could shop online.

Answer
good luck
I did save my money and get something nice and dont through away you 150 dollars just because its cheap and matches doesnt mean you will really like it in the long run.
ld Wait and find something you really like and then get it.Layaway if necessary or put things down for birthday or Christmas gifts.

i need helo finding a olace to rent under 800 a month or find a roommate in orange county ca?

Brandy

Im in need to rent my own place but can only afford 800 a month. And ir find a roommate to split my rent now. 1350 split 675 plus utilities. Im a mom with two small children. Looking for anyone as long as kid freindly. I need this by may first but needs to be set in stone by apirl first. I.currently live in old town tustin. 2 bedroom 2 bath. Master bedroom and rent negotiable depending on your Situation.

Answer
You will not find anything big enough for you, your 2 kids, and a roommate for 1350. You need at least 3 bedrooms, but if you are splitting 50/50 that means at least 4 bedrooms, and that simply does not exist. You are being completely unrealistic. Homes large enough simply rent for more then that. And if you are expecting someone to pay half the rent you can't expect that you are using more then half of the bedrooms.

Were can I get a full (as in size) star/moon bed set?? Please help!?

little mis

Okay, so I'm re-decorating my room. And right now I'm REALLY into stars/moons/constelations and all that stuff! So were can i get a full as in size, set? The colors that would be the best is yellow and purple. Because i have 1 wall yellow and 1 wall purple, and two walls teal. and the trims are different on each wall. Like yellow wall purple trim etc.... and the trim on both teal walls are purple i know the teal doesn't really match but it's okay because I'm gonna re-paint it. But where can i get a bed set with stars, constelatinos, or moons on it?? Prefibly both and the colors purple or yellow. I'm gonna re-paint my teal. and the bedding size is full. oh and it would be nice if it was a set like comforter, pillows, and sheets and stuff matched. thanks! i would like to buy it online and it needs to be cheap.

Stores online:

Is $6,000 too much for a bedroom set?

I'm thinking about buying a bedroom set for my daughter. It includes a Full Bed, Armoire, End Table, Media Stand, Desk, Chair, and Dresser. Is $6,000 too much? Thanks for helping, I'm not good with deals.
It is from pottery barn. http://www.pbteen.com/shop/furniture-collections/chelsea-furniture/
I was planning on getting exactly what I listed.
My family is pretty good income wise. And I just don't know because I know I could find something cheaper but it looks really nice...? so confused.

Answer
People have gotten so used to places that sell a whole room for $999, that better furniture seems outrageous in price. Do not be deceived. You get what you pay for.

A $6000 bedroom should last you several generations. Just be sure it is wood and not cardboard or fiberboard in the hidden areas. Pottery Barn sells decent products. They are not going to end up in a museum, but they meet the needs and tastes of most people. Good, sturdy, well designed, contemporary, interesting. Go for it.

Should I cancel $6000 Pottery Barn Teen Order? Just found out furniture is made from MDF.?

E

Should I cancell $5500 Pottery Barn Teen order? Just found out it is not solid wood.?

I am redoing my 12 year old daughters bedroom. She is getting all new furniture and bedding. She loves a set from Pottery Barn Teen. The set was very expensive but I decided to make the purchase anyways because the sales person convinced me that it is well made and solid wood. The description says solid wood as well. After I told my neighbor about the purchase she told me that Pottery Barn is not worth the price and that I am being mislead about the quality. She said it is mostly made of MDF and that for the price I am paying I should look for better quality. After she told me that she showed me on the website that if you click on Dimensions and care and scroll down it does say that the furniture is made of hardwood, veneer and MDF. For the past few hours I have been looking online for a similar look that is solid wood but I cannot find anything similar. I would even pay a little more money for quality solid wood furniture. I usually try to buy high quality heirloom type furniture. I have very little experience with Pottery Barn but I have always been under the impression that they are top quality. Was I wrong?

Here is a link to the furniture we just ordered.
http://www.pbteen.com/shop/teen-rooms/girls-bedroom-furniture/envsb-coraline-paisley-room/

http://www.pbteen.com/products/chelsea-vanity/?pkey=e%7Cchelsea%2Bvanity%7C2%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C24%7C%7C2&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_-

I ordered the bed, dresser, and vanity set. I also ordered some bedding and a few other things. I am considering canceling the order and trying to find someone local to make it for me. I would probly just have to buy the mirror and vanity/desk chair then. I don't want to go through all that trouble if this is good. Should I keep the set or cancel the order? Anyone know of a heirloom quality furniture company that has a style similar to the furniture in the link? Is MDF a bad thing?

Answer
You pay substantially more for Pottery Barn Teen furniture than it's actually worth. It's sort of like the Abercrombie & Fitch of furniture stores in the sense that you're paying more for a brand that is popular with teens than for the quality or originality of the product. I had several pieces when I was a preteen, and I loved some. Others were flimsy. My nightstand drawers could hold very little weight and got scratched up quickly. I switched to antique furniture made of solid wood when I was 13, and they are more durable. I did keep my PBTeen vanity and tall, revolving bookcase and now have them in the living room of my on-campus suite at college. They have held up fine. Most of the PBTeen pieces require assembly, which means that you can also disassemble them for better portability. Since they are made with MDF, they are lighter weight, which is also a perk if you're moving things around.

I would look for reviews of the specific pieces you ordered before deciding whether to cancel the order. Google the names and see if you can find feedback. Many online furniture retailers sell pieces that are made with MDF in China and shipped disassembled to the customer. Some are better quality than others. Whenever possible I think it's best to buy local, but depending on where you are, that might not afford you as many options. I would look into furniture shops in your home town that have a good reputation and see if there are styles your daughter likes in well-made pieces. Do your research on them. A lot of stores just sell the same cheap Coaster Furniture kinda of stuff that is still made with MDF. If you happen to be in the LA area I can recommend AFK Fine Furniture for Children, which also has pieces for preteens and teens. I have four younger siblings with rooms furnished by the store, and they're happy. As for bedding, PB Teen is fine. You can also look at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and even places like TJ Maxx, Target, and IKEA. They often have surprisingly cute options.

Your daughter has a nice eye for style. I hope all works out with her room.
