We're moving to the UK. Any idea how much it will cost to container ship our furniture (about a 3 bdrm household full) from the US (east coast) to the UK?

I would suggest that the best way to get an answer to this problem would be to ask a few of your local removals agent to give you a quote.
I have just had a conversation with the man who did our [local] move and he tells me he only moves people from the UK abroad he would not go out and move somebody here [ime in the UK]
But more importantly he tells me that the cost is often so high that he tells me some of his customers would save money if they left everything here and bought new when they got to there new home.

What is a good way to decorate a bedroom? Function soft fabrics and items for a room that is?

for the head board you could make your own , buy a piece of plywood look enough to cover the back of the bed and by adding some batting and fabric you can make one

For you storage I have no idea on the look that you want to accomplish but for the belt you can buy a hanger that is made especially to hang belts, for the socks you can use this pieces of furniture that are in the picture that I'm inclosing ,there is a lot of storage for your things and anything that you no longer wear ,give it away to charity this way you have more room for the current things that you have .

I wouldn't go with a theme, I would make it colorful, like paint the walls and have neutral curtains and light fixtures but I would be sure that they each had a shelf or some kind of storage to call their own that they can have their things on. I would keep the bedspreads the same color but put pillows and little touches that are different on the beds. For example, a red ladybug pillow for her and a red car pillow for him. The ideas are endless in my head right now. I'm sure you'll come up with something great and they'll love it. Take care.

you need to buy bed risers. They will give you the storage space you need. Ty walmart or target to get the best deal and try to go there instead of ordering online that will also save you shipping cash. Look on ebay for the checking of the outside temperature tool. God bless!

I need a color scheme and bedding options and stuff... The walls are white so I guess I'd like to warm it up. Can a cultured marble counter top support a full 20-30 gallon aquarium?

In my bedroom I am planning to get a fish tank. I'm planning on it being to be about 20-30 gallons. So we are talking about 166.8 to 250.2 pounds in terms of water. With a high estimate of 60 pounds of other things (filter, weight of tank, rocks, filter, decorations, etc.) In total, the aquarium will be around 226.8 to 310.2 pounds. I was originally planning to set it on my counter top, which is cultured marble. The fact of the matter is that cultured marble can bend or warp with excessive weight. I'm not knowledgeable enough about cultured marble but I don't want to set the aquarium up until I have a good enough idea that it will be ok to set it up there.

Well, if it is cultured marble that is meant to be used as for counter tops and not the other kinds like shower panels then it should be fine. If you cultured marble has a bullnose then you might want reinforce the bottom of the marble with a thick peice of plywood and gluing all around in between with liquid nails (this will help prevent the marble to warp and keep it straight).

How high should I price my Bedroom set?

I have a bedroom set that I'm looking to sell, I want to get as much out of it as possible, but don't want to over price it. Included is a fairly large night stand, with 2 drawers, a long dresser with 7 drawers, and a bed frame that could either be queen or full.. but I would include my queen mattress and box frame. All is in good condition, the only thing that's wrong with it is there's a small ring on the night stand. I'm pretty sure it is the Thomasville brand, I know it is a name brand, but it's in storage and I cannot remember which it is.

Have you ever tried the online service called freecycle? You list what you have for pickup and then you list what you need and look at the other listings to see if others have also listed those same items.

No one pays on either end of the deal. It works great if they have it in your town or a nearby larger town.

i told my parents the other day and my mom insist that i got ripped off or i could of found a better deal and that i could of looked in the classifieds for a bedroom set but i want a new one for my self not a used one.

no it's solid wood i check it out my older brother bought a bedroom set that was made of pressed wood and it broke in no time so i knew too make sure it was solid wood. besides i could'nt find my set on the ashley website so i found it on that otherone so maybe that's the problem?

laminated means that if there is a ding it will look like crap. it's not solid wood, it's painted pressed wood. a wet glass can bubble up the surface, beyond repair.
1400. for a matress is very high. i got an unbelieveably great serta for $700. you almost need a step stool to get in it.
two years ago, i got a gorgeous solid wood, hand carved, 6 foot high headboard, footboard, triple dresser, tall dresser, and, night stand, all for under 2500. the style is called buckingham. it's heirloom quality. i love it. dings aren't noticeable and easily covered with ol english.
after years of having a crappy looking pressed wood bdrm set, i really love this set. it will retain much of it's value for a long time.
you have to shop around. i'm sorry, i agree with your mom.

If you have time to be "choosey", craig's list is a great option.
We got an entire bedroom set for our daughter, including a headboard, a dresser, mirror, desk with hutch and a chair for $900. It's beautiful, too - not something that was from Montgomery Wards circa 1975.

You can expand how far out you want to search, based on how far you feel like driving. But you will want to be quick if you find something good. ;)

you can get an 8' sheet of plywood, cover it with quilt batting on one side, stapled to the plywood on the other, and a few yards of a fabric that goes well with your other decor to cover the batting, again stapled to the other side. Lay longways on the floor behind the head of your bed for an instant, cheap headboard.
Another cheap idea for decor is to get a large canvas (oil painting type) and some colors you like, splash across the canvas and let dry. Instant art. Pretty cheap.
Make the most of the room you have with underbed storage bins.

How can I make my room look bigger?

Here are a few tips, excerpted from a larger list (see source below for the complete list):

1. Use a soft even light and eliminate shadows which tend to slice a room up into smaller spaces. If you have low or average-height ceilings, avoid overhead lighting - as this will visually lower your ceiling. However, if you have high ceilings, a sparkling chandelier or ceiling fan draws the eye up to the vertical volume of a room.

Try to focus the lighting around the perimeter of the room, as this will effectively push the walls back, providing an illusion of more space.

Also remember that a floor lamp can eliminate the need for a side table. And consider track lighting to reduce the number of lampshades, which interrupt the view of a room.

2. Use at least one tall element in a room to draw the eye upward, towards the ceiling. Not only does this maximize the vertical space in the room, but it also draws the eye up to the less crowded ceiling space above.

3. Don't let loud or bold patterns take over the room. Bold patterns and prints can still be used as focal points or accents within the room, but keep them to a minimum.

4. Use just one or two colors per room for visual simplicity that expands a space. Also keep in mind that white, neutral or pale colors best reflect light, visually "pushing back" walls. This is not a hard and fast rule, as many designers prefer richer colors in smaller spaces.

5. What you have to watch for when using rich colors in a small space is to reduce the contrast in the horizontal and vertical planes. For example, a light carpet, dark wall and white ceiling will often cause the walls to feel like they are "closing in" on you. If you do decide to use a dark color, reduce the contrasts with the floor and ceiling. For example, continue the wall color onto the ceiling (or use a shade that's only two or three shades lighter than the walls on the ceiling) to keep the contrast levels.

6. Think of storage as much as possible when decorating a small space. Two great ideas are to use skirts on beds or tables to create hidden storage areas. Also, ottomans that will slide under a coffee table or end tables can add much-needed seating without taking up floor space all the time.

Hide small clutter such as mail, pens, etc. inside vases, pitchers or decorative boxes and baskets.


7. A vertical stripe motif to your walls, which can be painted on in neutral tones, such as creams and beiges, will help to draw the eye up to the ceiling... maximizing the sense of vertical space.

Again, this treatments is excellent for small spaces with tall ceilings, as it brings the focus to the overall size of the room, not just the floor space.

8. Mirrors are probably the single-best way to expand visual space in a small space. By using mirrors to reflecting other parts of the room or other areas outside of the room (e.g. angling a mirror to provide a reflection of another room or the outside window), they create visual space like nothing else. Mirrors are also excellent at bouncing light around, adding to the feeling of space.

And there's no need to limit mirror placement solely to the walls. Mirrors can be used in a variety of ways to increase the feeling of space.

9. Use fabrics with texture as opposed to pattern to add interest without adding visual clutter.

Simple-patterned tapestry wall hangings are a great example of using texture to create visual impact.

10. If you don't have a lot of windows in the small space, create an artificial view using a painting or tapestry which shows a landscape or some other open space, giving the visual sense of space outside of the room.

However, the view should be clean, spacious and open. A busy landscape will effectively "pull back" into the room, which may not be the effect you are looking for.

Feng Shui - all-white bedroom in east - help?

Hello, I really want some advice on this as I can't put my mind around it.
I have always dreamed of an all white room. On the other hand I'm really into energy flow and stuff and the situation is against everything I've ever read about Feng Shui.
It is a bedroom in the east part of the house that I'm planning to make all-white with silver and glass elements.
My Kua Number is 9 - Fire.
The walls are ready and they are all-white which in some places I read can cause even sickness.
I don't know what to do - I was thinking to put some red elements like pillows and decorations. But won't that make it worse? I think the right thing to do is to put some wood elements there, but don't know if few green plants will be enough or what to combine with white and silver which is absolute metal.
Ahh, I'm very sad, I always wanted to make an all-white room and now when I have the chance it is in a bad position :(

An all white room can work, you would just need a lot of different shapes and texture. A good way to incorporate this is through draperies, pillows, and rugs. (second link)
For example instead of buying white cloth draperies, try to find one with an all white pattern. Or, instead of buying a an all white pillow, find all white pillows in a few funky shapes:

How to make room brighter?

So in my new apartment the carpet is dark green and the walls in my bedroom are dark red. I wouldn't have even chosen to live here just for this reason but the budget rules all. I'm not allowed to paint or remove the BLACK mini blinds (which I have up all the time as well). I have no idea who the hell decided to paint it such a dark color but it's TOO dark. I have a 5 light lamp with maximum wattage bulbs in it plus the light that's on the ceiling. I'd buy more lamps but I'm not too keen on turning on a million lights every time I want to spend time in my room. And to make matters worse, my bedroom furniture is black. At my old house it worked but here it just adds to the dark. But what can you do eh? I already have light comforter on my bed and have tried to do as much "lightening" with stuff as possible but the room is still so dark. What can I do to make it lighter without spending a lot of money? Any suggestions, useful or not, are much appreciated!!

well you can change the blinds, its just screws. you can switch it back to the drab black when you move out.

if your ceiling is white, get a lamp that shines up onto the ceiling to use that as a reflector.

get some light posters.

i would talk it over with the owner to see if there is some way you can paint. red is a horrible color.

I would say espresso finished wood or a dark wood like cherry would go well with it. If you want a bit more contrast, then go for a lighter wood.

Not sure what you mean by a mismatched set . . . . Different color pieces or different styled pieces in the same color? If you want mismatched styles in the same finish, check out your local thrift stores, furniture resale shops, yard sales and estate sales as you can often pick up the pieces you need relatively inexpensively. This is a good option especially if you do not need all of the pieces available in a bedroom furniture suite. The only thing is, you may have to do some additional work (sanding, stripping & staining) if the pieces you collect are not all the same color.

If you are wanting new, then look to IKEA. Hemnes, Brimnes and Brusali series have pieces available in a black-brown finish.

If you have a black headboard then you might want to add some black highlights to the dresser and nightstands to blend them together...paint the body of the dresser and nightstands black leaving the drawer fronts and tops the natural pine and add some great black iron hardware. It will look great with the headboard.

Is there a big difference between coffee and espresso colored furniture?

Q. I am trying to complete a bedroom set by purchasing different parts from different sets. The headboard I bought was beautiful, but the dressers and armoires weren't. So I'm putting together my own "set". I would consider my headboard to be an espresso color and there is a dresser online that is considered "coffee" color. There are other dressers that are espresso but I L0VE this dresser. If I were to purchase it would the colors be totally off?

Espresso is nearly black Coffee is a very dark brown ..As far as the colors being off...yes depends on their proximity and the lighting too. PLus the colors are wildly different manufacturer to manufacturer. It could work especially if it is multitoned.. What I would do is take a photo that accurately represents the color of the headboard and email it to them but their monitors could be skewed.

Now I'm really not into all the colors, just a simple black, white, tan, brown, and a sort of yellow, idea. Flower prints, art paintings all over, books, white walls etc. But still a bedroom for a girl. An artsy bedroom idea. And move my furniture around. The idea of a Paris themed bedroom is actually more popular in the USA than it is in France, so you probably will be better off looking at websites in English to inspire you.

If you do not want pink but want a strong colour why don't you go for blue. Traditional French toile de Jouy patterns are often blue.The pink to avoid is Barbie pink, but old rose is also used for Jouy patterns and it is more a kind of wine red.
