How early to people usually show up to an estate sale?

I found pictures of an elderly woman's estate sale. She has a very cool antique bedroom set (dresser, nightstand, four-poster bed and another chest of drawers). I want to know how early I should get there if the estate opens at 9am. Also, do I go in there and make an offer or will the items be priced? Are these prices generally negotiable?

Answer
If the estate sale is run by some sort of company, it is doubtful prices will be negotiated. It can't hurt to ask how low they would be willing to go.
These people know how much antiques cost and they get a percentage of the profit from the estate.
If the sale starts at 9 am, you should be there by 8:50 (just in case they hand out #'s or let a certain amount of people in at one time).

Good Luck and Happy Hunting.

What kind of Carpet for the bed room?

KinnaE

I need a new carpet for my room and I want to know what TYPE of carpet is best for a bedroom setting. I just want it to look smooth and feel good and squishy if I were to lay on it. Not scratchy and hard.
I don't now much about this stuff at all.
Well, how much does backing cost then?
What IS backing? ><

Answer
When shopping for carpet use you hands. They ll tell you what you ll like. There is no "type " of carpet to look at. Carpet comes soft and hard aside from berber, they almost always feel hard to me. Its because you walking on the top of a loop.
Nylons will be the over best bet and buy, and they can come in a very soft yarn system. Polyesters are a softer yarn all together but don t wear as well as a nylon but this isn t a big deal in a bedroom setting.
The type of carpet dictates the padding you get and each of these come in different weights or poundage. You ll have to have a certain weight of pad that ll determine the support each type of carpet gets. Some type of carpets like berbers can only have a 3/8 ths pad and the max you can get for regular carpet is 7/16 ths. But you can get from a 5 1/2 # pad to a 20#. Each offer different softness levels. Again let your feet do the walking over a carpet and pad sample which any store will let you do.
Shopping the internet won t let you feel any carpet.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar..GL

I want my Bedroom Emo How?

EmoHelloKi

Okay so im an emo and thirteen years old, and i want my room re-decorated. I need some tips on How to have my room like really emo to set the style of me being an emo but I haven't got a clue on what bedding to have, coloured walls, if I should have wallpaper on one wall, a rug, accessories. So please help me out
Peace XD

Answer
Here's what I think you should do.

Put black and white striped wallpaper on one wall. thick stripes might look cool, like this: http://www.wallpapershop.com.au/store/image.php?type=T&id=159
Paint the rest of the walls red. It might also be cool if you painted your door black.
Get cool black and white bedding. I think this would look great: http://www.tillys.com/tillys/variants.aspx?cid=1111&ctlg=020_Girls&prod=128177150&rank=1&size=-1

To decorate, put up some posters of your favourite bands. You could also put some cool prints in a simple black frame, maybe stuff like this:

And maybe some plain black or white curtains.

Greetings Yahoo! Answers.

My husband and I recently purchased a bedroom set and a gorgeous set of sheets. Unfortunately we have no idea how to decorate this room. The walls are currently a light creamy beige with white faux wood window blinds.

Can you please suggest some painting colors, techniques and other decor ideas that can transform our bedroom into a beautiful and modern/contemporary relaxing escape.

Thanks! :D

a rich red/orange wall accent with a nice earth tone brown will go nice on the walls to accent the furniture and beddings ... try imaging the walls in two tone colors.

My friend just move into her new house, and in one of the rooms had similar specs as your's, that's what she did and it looked great, i'm sorry I don't have pictures though...

What are your ideas for decorating small living spaces?

Learning i

I haven´t started to decorate our home because I have no idea where to start. Do you have any ideas?

Answer
1] make a graph of the house plan, and any furniture you have. Check sizes and wall measurements before you buy.
1] living room - sofa or love seat, and at least one comfy chair; shelves or cabinet for TV, stereo, music; side or coffee table for beverages [ use a trunk for a coffee table ], hanging lamp[s]. Use three colors and only 2 different prints for a small room [ as in pictures and pillows.] Put a mirror over the sofa or opposite the window to reflect light, making LR look more spacious. One big rug is good, not several small. One large picture, or several small in a row or a group looks nice.
2] bedroom - platform bed with storage [ check size of room to see if you can use a queen or full in there]; two dressers
[ his and hers seems to work best ]. If you have one big wall for head of bed, try putting each dresser on either side of the bed as night tables. Or, put mirrored dresser opposite the window. Add a large, restful picture over the bed. Use shelf dividers on closet shelf. You can store hats, handbags, bed linens, etc.
3] kitchen - check all shelf space, and go to a store for storage ideas [ Container Store; Walmart; Bed, Bath, and Beyond, etc. ] Try to get all small appliances and canisters, etc., in one color or one and a print. A small table and chairs is great for a tiny kitchen. Add a tablecloth or place mats that
match other color or print.
4] bath - if it has a linen closet, great. Use top shelf for medicine or personal products, and bottom for cleaners, toilet tissue, and paper towels. [ Use a milk crate to separate cleaners from other items.] Again, use one color and/or print to accessorize.

I have a small bedroom with a black bedroom set-queen bed, nightstand, dresser, and armoire. The walls are white with tan carpet. I went out and purchased a sateen black down comfort with a set of soft pink sheets but Im not sure Im going to be able to use it because there is just way way to much black. Can anyone suggest any ideas. Im just wanting a room that is pretty soft and romantic. I love the new furniture but I dont have any idea on how to decorate with it. Im not a "red" person, its never been one of my favorite colors. Any ideas on whether i should return the comforter and sheets and start over? I have no accents pieces yet so Im starting fresh.

Answer
pink works with black, tan works with pink, but I am not sure if you want to try all three. Maybe pull back on the pink to small items like alarm clock, bookends and such. Tan or white would be the best bet for the rest of the room. If you can paint, try a tan for 3 walls, leave 1 white and any trim white( paint is cheap and if you are renting be sure to ask first). You may want to use a throw blanket and some light decorative pillows on top of the bed to break up the black and try table runners or doylies on top of your cases. But if you are tight on money, Return the comforter and sheets to try something different.Maybe plain black and white will be pleasing, kinda go art-deco.

How do I get a teenage size squirrel out of my house?

It's under some furniture ion my bedroom and I can't get the window open. My cat brought him in. He needs to go down 2 halls and thru a kitchen to get out a door.

Answer
I would set up a humane trap with a shoebox and a stick and some peanut butter or corn and he will knock over the stick and get trapped under the box and you can slide something firm underneath the box and then take the squirrel outside.

Can I buy the same Key to open my door?

Okay So I locked my self out of my room, it was a simple golden key door lock sets i got at Menards for $20. If i buy the same brand and same lock i got at menards can i use that key to open my door?

Answer
Let me see if I understand your question. You want to buy a new lock set so you can use the key that comes with it to open a door at your house? It won't work even if it's the same brand because inside the knob are 5 pins that can be at least 8 different lengths. That makes the possible key variations 5 to the eighth power so your odds of finding one with the same key pretty slim. Otherwise thieves and siblings (sometimes they're the same people) could just buy one knob from each manufacturer to have a master key to any door. Speaking of which, locksmiths have master keys for most door knob manufacturers.

I'm guessing this is a door to a bedroom and not the front door to an apartment or house. And you have a keyed lock on it, not one that has a little hole in the middle of the outside knob? Because if it was one of those, you could just put a big bobby pin bent into an "L", a jewelers' screwdriver, or a bent curtain hanger into it and push the plunger inside to release the mechanism. Even if it isn't, if you're really lucky, the hinge pins are on the outside and you can simply remove them to take the door off. A flathead screwdriver is usually all it takes, though sometimes you need pliers, too. If that's not the case here, then you can try to wriggle a stiff piece of plastic like a credit card between the door and the jamb where the locking mechanism goes into the jamb to try to wedge it open. And if that doesn't work, you might just have to call a locksmith, though that would be the last choice because it's not going to be cheap.

how do i fix my bedroom with not alot of money?

Dana

my room is pink and frilly. i like rock and skinny jeans and converse and black. how do i redo my room? i dont have much money. so any cheap ideas?

Answer
Look for inexpensive sheets sets that you can turn into a duvet cover (pronounced "do-vay cover", it is a giant pillow case for your blanket. Just do a straight stitch up three sides of two top-sheets and leave the top open, then slip your blanket or comforter inside like a paper into an envelop or pillow into a pillow case You can baste it closed or put on buttons and button holes, but my daughter-in-law just puts the open part at the bottom of the bed), with coordinating color sheets for simple rod-pocket curtains and table cover for the night stand. You like "no frills" so solid colors or bold stripes might be more your style.

You can paint the walls yourself for about $35 in paint, a set of rollers, and one good brush. For decorations, take a photo of your favorite pair of sneakers or jeans, and take the digital photo down to a Kinko's or similar office printing store, and get them to print it up as a poster. It should be about $15, plus another $15 for an inexpensive frame. An alternative would be to spray adhesive onto a piece of foam-core board to mount it and make it easier to hang on the wall.

As far as color, since you like black, be careful that you don't overdo it as a color. If you don't want frilly girly pinkish, remember that going all black would not automatically be the opposite. Going super sophisticated might be the opposite. Clean warm tan on the walls, tones of red(blue, green, purple, or whatever) stripes on the bed and windows, and then a throw rug on the floor that picks up one or more of those colors to complete the look for a relatively small amount.

IF you can sew your own, you can get the sheets for about 8 to 10 dollars for each top sheet. How many you need depends on how many windows, how big your bed is, and so on.

If you can not sew, make a point of cruising second-hand stores. You may or may not be willing to take on second-hand bedding, but you can pick up accent pieces, posters, even rugs or weaving that would work in lieu of a head-board on your bed.

Decorating doesn't have to be expensive. You do have to be willing to be creative rather than getting it all out of a bag already coordinated, or willing to "re-purpose" things. A pair of tiny children's sneakers (I've seen "baby sneakers" at the dollar store) might be just the thing for the pull on a light chain or roller-type curtain, or with a hot-glue gun, could be a new base for a simple desk lamp. If you decide to downplay the Converse and play up the rock and roll, use a sheet of music for your poster - a song relevant to you would be perfect - and look for music themed or guitar or drums items. Drumsticks bound around the base of the lamp, for example, or guitar picks as a border on the lamp shade. Have fun with it!

Ceiling Fan Installation where there is no exisiting fixture?

My husband and I would like to install a ceiling fan in our bedroom. Only problem is there is not an existing light fixture in the ceiling. Would this be expensive to have an electrician install all this? Before we set up any estimates I wanted to figure out if it was too expensive for us to consider.

Answer
Installing a ceiling fan is not too difficult, even if you don't have a fixture. A local, residential electrician should be able to take care of the wiring and set up for under $300.00. The will have to fish the wires, install a mounting box and possible a new box for switches to control the fan. I don't know of any way to do it cheaper unless your husband is a real handy man. Check out http://www.ceilingfantasia.com for ceiling fan reviews, guides and more. They have some really cool stuff on there.

I'm working at a dominos as a delivery driver, and work almost 35 hours a week, plus tips on a lot of those hours. She's working as a sales rep for a company, and though she doesn't make all too much money, she does well enough. She's getting trained as an assistant manager now, making 1-2% of the office's total sales in addition to her own. She currently pays 300 in rent monthly to her parents, so she's used to paying rent by now. My store and her office are both a half hour away though- I spend 10 dollars in gas daily just going to and from work. I can make a solid 60 extra a week by moving closer, and so can she- so we'll have more money to put towards rent. There's a few nice 2 bedroom 1 bath apartments nearby for about 700, depending on how many luxuries we want. We're both nineteen, with not huge credit score histories but fair enough ones.

Think we can make it on our own?
Our families are stable. My dad makes about 100k a year, though we don't have money to really kick around, but still. She pays for most of her own food, and I eat very little around the house. We both own our own cars. Her paychecks total about 1-200 a week, and I can't tell you what 1-2% is because I honestly don't know how much the office makes itself. She makes 20% commission as is. And we want to move to Gilbert, AZ.
I'm also planning on getting another night shift job, maybe at walmart or something, if we can't make ends meet. As I'm not attending college (yet), I have a very free schedule. I plan to move up the ranks at dominos- I can be an assistant manager in 6 months if I work hard- and we plan on letting her finish her online schooling before I go to school myself, so one of us is always working while the other extends their career. I make a bit above minimum wage in store, and 4.50 plus tips an hour while delivering.

Answer
Okay, you've set a dream for yourself. Now you need to make it a goal by putting it into perspective.

15% of your incomes should go towards transportation (gas, car maintenance, insurance, etc.)
15% of your incomes should go towards debt repayment (if you have any debt. If you don't, then awesome, put this money towards savings or another category that needs it)
10% of your incomes should go to savings accounts (RSP account, even better; the sooner you start, even by a couple years, the more money you can make for your retirement).
35% of your incomes should go towards housing (that includes utility bills, rent, mortgage later, etc.)
25% of your incomes goes towards your life expenses (food, entertainment, short-term wants, etc.)

Now you haven't given any real figures; how much does your gf make a month? (If it varies from month to month, choose a month where her income was really low. It also sounds like things are moving around for her financially, so in 6 months when her job is 'settled', what will her income look like on average per month?). For the sake of argument, let's say her worst month was $1500 / month, and her future income will look like $2400 / month.

What about your job? How much do you make? Take your worst month, and again since financially things seem to be moving around for you (especially if you can make it as a manager), project how much you think you could make. For the sake of argument, let's say right now you make $1500 / month, and as a manager you would make $2000 / month.

This means that for RIGHT NOW, together you make $3 000. LATER you project you'll make $4 400.

These are your incomes for the month, the money you have to work with to make it all work. I'll work the numbers for your RIGHT NOW budget, but then see if you can figure out using my calculations the amounts of the projected 4 400.

15% x 3000 = $450 / month to spend on transportation. That means you have $112.50 a week for both of you to spend on transportation, and everything in that category.
15% x 3000 = $450 / month to spend on debt repayment (or put this somewhere else)
10% x 3000 = $300 / month to put into savings - you should never skip the saving step. EVER.
35% x 3000 = $1050 / month to put towards rent, utility, bills, etc. Decent, possibly managable.
25% x 3000 = $750 / month for life.... $187.50 a week for groceries, entertainment, clothing, gifts, wants.

NB: Whenever you move out, you should always have 6 months worth of expenses in your savings account; should one of you lose your job, you won't be able to afford your current lifestyle, and if you dont' have those savings, you could also find yourself homeless.

Your numbers might be a bit different, you didn't give them, so this is an imaginary plan. The principles are the same though, so apply the math, figuring out your budget, and then say to yourself, how much do we need to put away for that 6 month period? Figure out a number, and then figure out how many months it will take you to save that amount.

This is all about making your dream a real goal that you can accomplish.

What color should i paint my room?

Beach Bum

My furniture is white.. and my room is not small and not to big.. its a good size. im a 23 year old female. Any ideas?? I was thinking either tan, or maybe go cranberry color. If you can supply pics too, that would be cool! Much help appreciated, thanks :)

Answer
It depends on your bedding and the mood you want to create. Tan would look calm and can be used with lots of different colored bedding; cranberry would be warm and cozy but wouldn't be as versatile. If you love both, you could paint three walls tan and one cranberry, but either way find the bedding you love first, then decide.

the cost of living in the in the philippines?

is it very expensive to live in in the philippines as compared to the united states my main concern is the doctors and medication,s there is it expensive is the food very high or is it about like living in america?. if i move there i will be living in san-juan phlippines with my wife to be.

Answer
this question comes up weekly in one form or another. My first reaction when I see this is that it seems you have never been here. If that is the case please stop and think first. I have lived in the Philippines for over 10 years total, permanently for the last 7. I love it and would not want to retire anywhere else, but with that said it is not for everyone. you need to explore a little before you made such a decision. (including getting married). Consider three trips to get an better overview. if she loves you what is a year wait.

cost of living can be very reasonable but it can also be high if ground rules about helping family is not set first. you may end up with a number of brother in laws never working since you are doing the support.

Food is inexpensive and other cost of living good. I live very nicely in the Subic Bay area on about $1000 a month. That is a three bedroom apartment about 50 meters from beach, part time housekeeper, utilities, cable, internet food and all the other basics.
in my area doctors are inexpensive, about 300 peso for a office visit. hospitals reasonable and good. Health insurance depends on age. I am 57 and a full insurance for me is about $100 a month

If you have an Kindle you may want to get the kindle version of the Subic Bay Retirement guide below. it only $3. if not get the paperback. while it is geared towards Olongapo it does have good break down of what to expect for cost of living. it also has related topics

Cheap AND Safe areas to rent an apartment or condo in Manila?

shortpc89

Does anyone know any safe and cheap areas in Manila to rent an apartment or condo? Yes, it HAS to be both safe AND cheap. Makati is full of pre-selling units...I don't have the money to invest and wait for a turn-over. Cubao has some apartments for rent but Cubao has a bad reputation. Ortigas and/or Pasig City were also on my mind but I haven't found any in those areas either and flood warnings are high in that area during typhoon season.
@David - dude, you're delusional. Saying that the entire country is cheap and safe would make you inexperienced. How long have you lived here? I've lived in the country for two years and there have been so many stories of robbery and theft, it's not even funny. Making you a foreigner makes life a lot risky and dangerous. Philippines is a wonderful country where people respect foreigners but you still have to be on the alert at all times because this is a third-world country.

@the guy who made the first post - those prices sound reasonable, however I'm looking for a price that is around 10k-12k for a 1BR or studio unit.
@ken, yes I plan on long term but I'm hoping to get a 1 month, 3 month, or 6 month lease. I will have a friend living with me as well.
meant to say J3n, not ken....lack of sleep impairs my thinking
@David, again....you're delusional....office workers earn 8k monthly? really? dude, my last 2 office jobs in the Philippines...my monthly salary was 16k and that was AFTER taxes. 8k is probably the salary for entry level workers in the province but not in Manila. There s no way an apartment or condo would have a monthly rental of 80k...that's waaaay too expensive. Try to live in the Philippines and do your research before you start saying stuff.
@Paul - I respect your answer but putting someone down because they are American is disrespectful. I'm considered a foreigner (born and raised in the US) but I'm actually a fil-am. I bring my girlfriend with me who is a filipina and a UP graduate...I've never been "duped" or offered high prices before. I always receive the same brochure and price rates as everyone else. Accusing someone of getting higher prices because of who they are is foolish. If you know who to associate yourself with and how to act, you can be treated equally as everyone else....IF you're smart.

Prices DO go above 18k in many apartment and condo places. It all depends where you go.

Answer
I can easily answer your question because I understand the condo market in certain parts of metro Manila. I also own a condo at Robinson Place Ermita and have two smaller rentals, which have long term tenants

The average rent for a condo at Robinson Place, Ermita. rent prices varty depending upon which floor the unit is on, and particular view.

Small studio 37 square feet 16,000 to 18,000 Pesos
Studio unit, 48 square meters 20,000 - 25,000 pesos
One Bedroom 67 square meters 25,000 to 30,000 Pesos
Two bedroom 100 square meters 30, 000 to 40,000 Pesos

I also know of a much cheaper place on P. Burgos Street in Makati, on the same strip where there are several night clubs. The Virra Building is an older building constructed back in the mid 1970's. The building is old,but all of the common areas are spotless cleaned. Meaning the building is well maintained, just that because the building is old and each suite has a different owner, in some units there are critters. That said; you need to be selective in your particular unit you select to rent.

Unlike Robinson Place where the unit owners will expect a lease agreement for a minimum of one year and in some situations may rent out for six months, at the Virra Building they are set up for daily, weekly, and months rental plans. What is also good about the Virra Building is your landline, TV Cable, all furniture, kitchenware to include Pots and pans, and all cooking utensil's, bedroom blankets/linen, bath towels and appliances are included. Units are rented out completely furnished, whereas in Robinson's Place, a furnished unit will cost much more. My wife and I have stayed in the Virra building several extended visits before and after we purchased our other condo's and properties. Need some place to stay where other places are rented out. It is my opinion that the Virra Building has the most reasonable rates for the Makati area and overall a fabulous deal because i consider the rental prices much cheaper than their competers.

A few years back when the global economy was much better my wife and I rented a one bedroon unit at the Virra Building for 25,000 Pesos and later after family and friends terminated their visit we down sized to a studio for 15,000 pesos. In recent months I have been informed the rent has not changed that much.

Another option is Cityland condo units kitty corner from Robinson Place, Padre Fuara, Ermita. They have studio units, real small 21 to 25 square meter units that rent out unexpensive.

Both areas I mentioned Makati and Ermita are fairly safe. I have lived in both areas and have never experienced any problems. Almost forgot, compared to Robinson and Cityland, the Virra Building is better for those who what to find a safe suitable place to settle down for short term stay while finding more upscale place to live. Also keep in mind there are many Americans and wealthy Filipino's living in this building

UPDATE: Dave indicated I maybe confused and only expect to pay 1,500 Pesos (About $37.00 USD) for a suitable rental condo for one month. Dave's information is very inaccurate. There is no God's earth a suitable condo rental can be found in where in the Philippines for that price.

To reassure you and others I am NOT confused, I will provide some back ground information for credibility and hopefully provide others some insight. This information is public anyway to those who now how to use popular internet search engine Google to research my name ken rice+ Philippines. I have lived, worked and have made substantial investments in the Philippines my whole adult life. The first time I lived and worked in the Philippines was back in Aug 1980 when I only 19 years old active duty US Air Force military police stationed at Clark Air Base, Angeles City. I worked closely with the Philippine Constabulary (Now Philippines National Police PNP) and local officials. During my military career I lived and worked in the Philippines two tours, a total of six years Aug 1980- Aug 1983 and again from Oct 1985-Oct 1988. Since I left Clark I have made almost annual investments to look after my investments until I retired from the military. After I retired I moved to the Philippines, wife and I lived there for several years before returning to the states in Year 2006. Since than we divide our time between our home in Oregon and condo in Ermita. My wife and I also own a third home and several investment properties. Rest assure I am not confused. I have been around a very long time and know exactly what I am posting. My only goal is to share my knowledge to assist others in their quest for knowledge when it comes to Philippines Travel.

Lastly check Cityland in Ermita. Their rentals are very reasonably priced. You may be able to find a place at Cityland within your price budget.

Purple and blue bedroom?

Right now my room is bright orange and it's too bright and annoying so I wanted to repaint it. My room is smallish but it's long and narrow instead of square. I was thinking of painting all walls a medium to dark purple and then painting just one wall some form of blue. Would this be okay? And what colors would go together?
Sorry I meant painting three walls purple not all

Answer
Dark colors and multi colored walls will make your room seem smaller. With a narrow room, this is not a good idea.

I would first look for bedding that has both purple and blue, then pick a lighter or matching shade of the non-dominant color for ALL the walls. Paint the trim/doors white.

Examples:

how should i decorate my room?

Rachel S

I have the attic bedroom in a 110 year old house so saying it looks old is an understatement.
I have a newer bedroom set, an old wingback chair, and a bar stool..
does anybody have some ideas on how I can make my bedroom look better without buying new furniture? I have no money to fix it up, so saying "paint the room", "buy new furniture", etc is unrealistic for me. I appreciate all helpful answers.
here are 2 pictures of my room, if they help.
number 1 (right inside of my bedroom): http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu114/Rachel_zoe_2009/Mobile%20Uploads/0608122012.jpg
and number 2 (where my bed is): http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu114/Rachel_zoe_2009/Mobile%20Uploads/0428121554.jpg
btw, plz excuse the mess, this was before i cleaned up my room.

Answer
It might be a good idea to put your dresser next to your night stand on the same wall as your headboard. Then put your wing back chair in the corner adjacent to your door. This will open up the room and give it an airyness that causes a youthful feeling to the room. Hope this helps.

What is the Sims 3 generations like?

jenny

I was considering buying this game but I was curious about whether it was any good. Does it have the same things as the original Sims 3 or what? Also, is it better than the Sims 3 Ambitions because I have that game and I like it a lot. Basically I don't want to spend money on a game that's not that great.

Answer
Personally, Generations is my favorite expansion for Sims 3. If you want to know what there is here's a few things off of the top of my head:
-Playground sets (slip n slide, tree houses, etc)
-Kid's bedroom furniture (bunk beds, castle themed set, etc)
-Imaginary Friends (if your sim discovers the potion to make them real, they could be your sims
wife/husband)
-Prom, Learning to Drive, Teen Parties, after school clubs etc.

Those are the only things I could think of right now. It's really fun and the new features are pretty nice.

How can I decorate nursery for soon-to-have baby when six year old step-daughter shares the same room?

I have six year old step-daughter, she lives with her mom so my husband and I only get her maybe two weekends a month. We have the second bedroom set up for her, but I am pregnant with our first child together and I don't know if we can quite afford a three bedroom home. How can I decorate this nursery? If we only get my husband's daughter once or twice a month, is it wrong to just leave her bed in there and her toys and go ahead and decorate the nursery for the baby as I want? I don't want to push her out or her to be jealous of the baby. What do you think? Any ideas?

Answer
Yikes, I frankly don't think there is any possible way the step-daughter won't be jealous and resentful having "her" room redecorated to accomodate the baby. Possibly listening to her input regarding color choices or theme could help. I think I'd set up a corner of my house with a desk that she helps choose and fill the desk with special craft materials that she helps to select. I'd make as big a deal out of setting up her desk as I would fixing up the nursery. I'd emphasize that the desk is only for big girls and babies can't get into it. Frankly, however, I think I'd move to a bigger place as soon as I could afford it. Good luck with your expanding family

What should I do with my home?

I live in Atlanta and I am going to be taking a 6-12 month contract in another state. I have a nice 3 bedroom home 2.5 bathroom home about 12 miles from downtown (in the suburbs) but it is not in an attraction area nor is it set up like a vacation home. I don't want my home to just sit idel for that long period of time and I don't want to sell it because I will be coming back to town once a month and at the end of the contract, I will be moving back in it. I am worried about renting it out for fear of someone tearing it up but I may have to do this. What shoudl I do with it? Should I try to rent it out weekly as a vacation home? Any other suggestions?

Answer
If money is not a problem with you, hire a caretaker for your home while you are gone. Somebody to check on it, clean it and make it ready for you to come home to. Install an alarm system before you go. Post the warnings. Stop all newspapers and mail. Get timers for the lamps. Tell the neighbors you will be gone. Good Luck!

How is it like living in a dorm?

SV650s

Is it better or worse than an apartment? What about the studying? I heard that some neighbors are noisy, and they have orgy everyday. What about the rent? Does the dorms are cheaper than apartments? Thank a lots in advance.

Answer
I lived in the dorms my first year of college. Dorm life can be lots of fun and lots of not so fun. I had a total of 4 roommates (our dormatories were giant 4 bedroom apartments... very nice... some colleges are not so lucky). The rent was basically $6000 for a whole year (ran from aug-july and included all utilities/cable/internet/washer/dryer... but no phone, most ppl just had cell phones). My college was in Atlanta and I loved being in the city. My roommates were pretty cool. We occasionally disagreed on air conditioning, cleaning, laundry, etc, but for the most part we all got along. My roommates did like to throw lots of parties (and you definitely have to be careful with alcohol on campus!) and it affected my grades (so be careful). To avoid fights over parties, utilities, etc. you definitely need to set grounds rules when everyone moves in. Find a common ground on air temp, laundry routines, study hours, food storage, etc. When we first movied in, our RA (resident assistant) made us all sign a contract that agreed us to our own set house rules. We all had to sign it and basically if a problem arose we would refer back to the rules. This may seem kinda silly, but it makes things official and gets things out in the open. For the most part, I liked living in the dorms. Its a good experience. You are really on your own and you learn to manage a house. It can be frustrating at times (especially when everyone was raised differently and do things differently), but its really awesome when you share classes with your roommates. My roommate and I shared American Gov class, but I never went to class (no attendance policy). It was great, I got the notes and assignments without going to class (made a B in the class).

I hope that was useful. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Need some tipcs on new cat?

Dergyll

Hello guys,

Due to a most positive suggestion, I just returned home bearing my new cat! Her name is Zoe and she's gray (I don't know alot about cats...)

http://www.cthumane.org/site/PageServer?pagename=adopt_NewingtonPets

Scroll to the bottom of the page, she's the last one.

So now I'm curious about things, here are some questions:
How long should we keep her isolated in one room? (thats what the councelor said to do)

What do cats do to show that they're hungry/sleepy/sick/need to pee?

Anybody recommend a Vet in the Hartford area of CT?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!
Derg
Sorry, but the picture and discription of her was removed a few hours ago.

Answer
Kudos to you for giving Zoe a home and choosing an adult shelter cat.

How long she stays in one room will depend on her personality and your living situation (how many people in the home, children, other cats or dogs, etc.).

And cats are always very upset when moved from one location to another - even moving to a new house or apartment with an owner they know is stressful for them.

So the key to this is to let her have a small space to chill out. You need to set up a space with a litterbox, a tray with her water and food. If that space is a laundry room or a bathroom some sort of soft bedding should be provided. If it's a bedroom she may seem to hide under a bed for a day or several. You just go in and "refresh" the stuff on the tray and scoop out the litterbox, always talking softly to her as you do it. If you can have the time to sit in the room, reading, listening to music or whatever she may come out to investigate. If she was affectionate and cuddly at the shelter she probably won't be right away in her new place.

She will let you know when she feels ready to take on other parts of the house. If she is excessively shy and hiding I would suggest you pick up a bottle of Rescue Remedy from a health food store or pharmacy. You just shake the bottle well and put three or four drops on the fur between her ears. If you can't reach her easily put the drops on a small cloth and put it under the bed. Use the drops LAVISHLY. They will help her achieve a good emotional blance and prepare her for moving on in her new home.

Good luck with her. Let me know how it goes.

Answer
You could do a collage or a painting of something like a city view. If you're ever seen the 'view' out the window of the 'Seattle apartment' on 'Frasier,' it was all done with set design; I've read that there WAS no such view in Seattle. But it looks real, doesn't it?? All you'd need would be a rectangular stretched canvas. Tall buildings would be super easy to paint; just tall rectangles with bright rectangles or squares for windows. Have fun!

Need some easy decorating ideas for a Master Bedroom?

Jen

We have an older four poster oak bedroom set-its sturdy and well made and I just cant bring myself to get rid of it. I would really love to spice up my bedroom decor but cant figure out what would go well with the brown oak "country style" bedroom set. Im more into a contemporary or eclectic look now and I need help with some options...thanks.

Answer
I had a Lane bedroom set. It was solid oak and gorgeous. It had a canopy bed, triple dresser, armoire and two nightstands. I had that set for at least 30 years and it looked like new.

But times and tastes change and I wanted something more modern or at least "different".

Trust me, nothing you do to that "country style" set is going to satisfy you if your taste has changed. Bite the bullet and let it go. I sold my old set reasonably to someone that loved it as much as I did when it was new so I knew it went to a good home.

I then bought a new set that is just what I wanted at this point in my life. I don't go for the "sturdy, well made" (translated "really expensive") stuff anymore (I'm not talking about buying junk either, I got my new set at Ashley) because then you have it forever and get tired of it. If you take good care of whatever you buy it will last you for as long as you love it. Then, when you don't "love it" anymore you won't feel so bad to let it go.

Life is short, you deserve to have what makes you happy today!!

Edited: I work for a store that sells furniture wholesale and I update their catalogs. Believe me when I tell you that if you paint the "country" furniture black, it's going to look like black "country" furniture (I see hundreds of sets of black "country" furniture). Country is country is country. If you try to put modern stuff in, on and around your "country" stuff, it's going to scream "she's trying not to look country, but it's country with modern stuff". It won't go. I had country decorating in my home. My husband bought me a baby grand piano. When they bought it in and set it down amidst my "country" stuff, you could almost hear the piano saying "What's all this stuff?" I had to change my decor to go with the piano (much more sophistocated victorian). Modern stuff has clean lines and there is no way to make country stuff look modern.

I'll say it again, life is short, get what you really want and enjoy it.

What color/style nightstand should i get?

Swan

I decided on a black steel bed for one of my bedrooms but i dont know what type of dresser or nightstand to get with it. It is not sold as a bedroom set. The store suggested that most people who buy this type bed get black solid wood furniture like an armoire or chest to complement it. i am not into matching since i have eclectic taste just wondering for some suggestions.
It is the masterbedroom and the walls will be a light gray color. The trim is white and the bedroom comforter set will be either white or blue.

Answer
With a black steel bed any color would go with it. You could try to match or tone in with the floor or wall. Or you could go with a contrasting color, although probably best not to have more than 3 or 4 colors total. It also depends a bit on the size of the room, i.e. the larger the room, the more colors you could use, if you want to. Also, because it is a bedroom, maybe you should use paler pastel colors rather than bold primary colors.

The main thing is to have fun with it!!!!!!!!

--After I bought the set I painted my room hot pink and now the furniture is completeley lost and doesn't stand out at all. So I'm thinking that I should either paint the furniture white so that it will definteley pop or I should just repaint my room to more of a airy brezzy spa blue. Your answers are very serious to me so please help it you can. Thanks in advance.

Answer
I love the furniture. Yes, you can paint it, all you have to do is prime the backboard and foot board (with Kilz or Benz) and then paint it white, but don't. The finish is really beautiful, and timeless. You can tire of the paint color on the walls, but what a simple solution. Paint the walls another color. Spa colors are so chic right now (timeless, too) , especially with a calm, neutral blue, and you have the right idea already. Spa blue is so restful, peaceful, and beautiful with your bed. A beautiful blue throw at the end of the bed and throw pillows would set the room theme. Paint the walls spa blue:) A good place to start for this palette is Benjamin Moore. Log on to the link below (Pottery Barn and Benjamin Moore have coupled up with paint colors). Hope you find something you love:)

Looking for nice, good quality bedroom furniture for my kids. Any suggestions?

Gigi

They are 4 & 2 and share a room. I am not down with Ikea or putting things together myself. Love Pottery Barn furniture, but looking for a place with a little more of a selection to get more of an idea of what it is I want exactly. Any suggestions would be great.

Ok so here's the deal im moving from Salinas Ca to who the hell knows where in Tennessee in the next three months. There's a reason why i don't know where in Tennessee, but id really rather not explain it. Anyway i got 3 months to come up with some money for moving. How much would it be? Say its the most expensive place ever (I'll probably move into an apartment, but its better safe and estimate high) (and if i do move into an apartment, it'll most likely be a two bedroom) Anyway, ive never had to move before and Ive never owned a place of my own so i don't know how things work. Idk how much a moving truck is or an apartment or electricity, just give me the low down please. Whats it like in Tennessee anyway? Sunny? Rainy? Gangs? Cultural?

Answer
Sounds like you are overwhelmed with all the details. Just take them one at a time.

The cost of moving depends on how you do it. Are you going to rent a truck and drive yourself, or are you going to hire a moving van. A moving van is based on weight and distance, so I can't be much help there. The rates are set by federal law, so they are about the same from one company to another.

If you are going to rent a truck, you'll need to call one of the national companies that lets you pick it up in CA and drop it in TN. They can tell you the different sizes and how much they cost. If you go to www.uhaul.com and click on the "Rates and Reservations" at the upper left, you can get an estimate. Start looking for sturdy boxes so you don't have to buy them.

How much you pay for an apartment will depend on where you end up. In a small town, it might be under $500 a month for a 2BR, but in Nashville/Memphis/Chattanooga/Knoxville it could be almost double that. You might check out www.rentals.com for some prices, but they only have a small portion of the rentals available. Remember that you will probably need first and last month's rent and a security deposit.

If you have to do your own utilities, you will have to pay a deposit. Again, it is hard to say how much because each company has a different policy. They will run your credit score that tells them how much risk you are. I would guess a minimum of $300 deposit for water/sewer/electric/gas. I'm not sure if cable and phone require a deposit. If you have had service in your name in CA, that helps. Fortunately, the actual cost of water, electricity, and gas are reasonable (lots of rivers and power from TVA).

As for Tennessee, it is usually sunny, but we have our rain storms too. We have four seasons, some snow, some hot and humid days. Generally it is very nice. A few gangs but mainly in the big cities. Culture includes music (country, symphony, bluegrass, blues), art, historic sites (Civil War, Scopes Monkey Trial, presidential sites), plus our varied countryside (mountains, hills, swamps, forests, farms, small towns, big cities).

Hope this helps.

?????Why?? I just don't get it...?

Ok, I went to Memphis, Tennessee and I toured Graceland. My question is....WHY AREN'T FANS ALLOWED TO GO UPSTAIRS???? I just don't get it! Shouldn't fans have a right to see Elvis's bedroom and bathroom and whatever else is up there? I'm just really upset becuz that is just something that I wanted to witness, Elvis's bedroom and bathroom and just experience what it was like to see the King's, I guess you could call, private quarters. And another question, there is a guard at the bottom of the stairs and a guard at the top of the stairs and there is another guard at the doors, and those double doors leading to Elvis's bedroom/bathroom, etc. are like completely sealed like you wouldn't believe. Anyways, I get like this haunting feeling like something is wrong or something is telling me that you really don't wanna go up there, it's bad. I do realize that Elvis did die here, but I just don't get it and I'm so confused. Why are my instincts telling me that?? Just...help, I'd appreciate it! :)

Answer
"Shouldn't fans have a right to see Elvis's bedroom and bathroom ..."? You are kidding, right?

You don't have any "right". You are paying admission to enter a private residence. The owner sets the rules, and you have to abide by them. In many historic homes, the upstairs is off-limits due to fire laws. If they allow tourists up there, they must install additional exits from the second floor which would ruin the character of the house.

Rather than obsessing over what you didn't see and creating some conspiracy theory, you should have spent your visit appreciating the things you could see.

And when you take the tour of the White House, they don't parade you through the bathrooms.
