Redoing my basement bedroom?

Concerned

I would like to transform my ugly "storage" room into a spare Guest room. It has awful carpet and dirty suspended ceiling tiles, oh and gross Wall Paper. How can I fix this room in a single weekend to look and feel like a room that's functionable and Sleep Worthy?? Under 300 bucks? I have never done anything like this so details would be great!!!

Answer
Paint, clean carpet and change out the ceiling tiles .Remove the wall paper.

Make sure the room is insulated and the floors are no sloping.

Get bedding and a dresser.

Look on line or in thrift shops for a simple dresser.
Prepare it for painting then pick a great color and paint it.

DIY bedroom ideas for teen girls?

Mikaela

I moved into my room when i was 6... the walls are pink and blue and i was wondering if anyone had any ideas for makingit a bit more teen like... i'm 13, i love art and i love to be creative... then again i dont want to ave to buy anything to expensive.. plus my room isnt very big so no furniture or anything please... thank you sososo much:)

Answer
I'm 13 too :). I just redid my bedroom about 3 months ago. Some good stores are home goods, ( really nice for art that is not expensive) and pb teen. ( pb teen is more expensive but good for ideas and you can just try to get the same thing cheaper on amazon :). Lastly target is really good and affordable. Also if you are really creative, Michael's craft store is good if you want to make something homemade for your room. There is a project where you take crayons and melt them on a black board with a hairdryer and it is really cool. Just search " crayon art melting", and there are a million tutorials.

Hope this helped, and have fun making over your bedroom :)

Ps. Wall decals are cheap and really cool. You can find a million different kinds on amazon.

Bedroom Ideas, Teenage girl!?

Q. I am redoing my room and I am getting a new bed. I can't decide what type of frame to get. I have a couple hundred dollars to spend so I was thinking something from walmart or target. I am 16 years old and a little bit of a girly girl. Right now I have a black faux leather frame and it's just too boring for me. I was thinking a metal canopy bed would be cute, with a colorful comforter. With a dark wood dresser and night stand. Also, I am looking for a cheap vanity desk, modern but cute. Pictures with your guy's ideas would be amazing. I have a few hundred dollars to spend, but the cheapest of things would be better. Thanks in advance!
Thanks..you were a big help............pft.
You really helped! I love your room. You gave me a whole new idea. I really like the white and silver in your room. I am now looking for a white dresser, a little desk like yours with a mirror so I can sit down and do my makeup and a silver framed bed. Thank you so much :)

Answer
When I was 15 I went through the stage of completely re-designing my room and I'm so glad I did because I love my room! First I chose the theme I'd be going for which is really girly! So I painted three of my walls purple and added purple hearts as a border in the middle of each wall horizontally, and then one wall hot pink with black stencils ontop, it made my room so much more brighter! I then decorated most things in pink and purple to match the walls.. and having the furniture either white or silver to break away from all the colours. The paint was cheap for my walls, one large can of purple, one large can of hot pink and one small can of black. I got one of my family members to paint my walls and then my mother stenciled black patterns onto one of my walls so there was no cost in hiring a painter to paint my room!

I then bought new bed sheets and pillows in bright colours to make my room really bright and girly, and accessorised mainly in pink, purple and bright colours. Things like candles are cheap and look really good in your room, also a bonus that they smell really nice!

With your old furniture, you can still change it for a cheap price. What I did was kept my dressing table with the mirrow attatched but simply removed the original knobs that were on each drawer and bought silver round knobs which matched my bed, that was a great idea to do instead of the ugly little girl floral knobs I had on it originally!

Accesories with picture frames of your heroes or singers/actors that you like, and a few with your friends of course! All you will be paying for is a new bed, paint, new bed sheets and pillows, few candles and picture frames and you should be set!

Here's some photos of my room for inspiration and ideas, enjoy!

I love the movie phantom of the opera and I want to make my bedroom look like christines dressing room.?

glamorouso

I also want to hang some artwork on the walls so any ideas for that?

Answer
In the movie, Christine's dressing room is filled with vases upon vases of roses from her admirers after her performance in "Hannibal." Also considering that roses are a prominent symbol in the movie (as a sign from the Phantom) you could choose to incorporate that in your decorating. Candles also make frequent appearances in the set design, most notably in the dressing room and lair. Christine also has what looks like a dark red silk armchair by the door. There is also a french screen in the corner that she dresses behind.

On the doors, there are painted flowers. On the red and rose wallpaper, you can see portraits of victorian age women. You could also find vintage-looking opera posters, such as the one they use for "Hannibal." Glass wall lamps hang as well.

In the movie, Christine has a gold vanity. It has three gold oval mirrors. You could maybe find similar mirrors and put them on a desk. On the desk, there are white tapered candles.

Of course, the room wouldn't be complete without it's main feature: the mirror. You could probably find a full length mirror or one with a gold frame.

These are just some ideas, I hope they helped. Below is a link for the screeen caps for the scene in the movie where she's in her dressing room.

How should I decorate my room?

Hellooo,
I am decorating my room soon but I don't know how to decorate it.

I want it to reflect me as a person, I am a teenage girl, sensitive, quirky, musical, fashionable :D

These are some theme ideas that I had, there are also some links to give you an idea of what style I'm thinking:

* musical - I'm into guitar and stuff so I thought maybe I could make it musical

*Textily/querky - don't how to explain so here are some pics for ideas-

Any ideas, on making these work, or any ideas on some new themes??

Answer
Well since your getting older and you want a more modern room go for more vintage furniture, because its more "grown-up" but still can be really cute, fun, and quirky!
Vintage furniture falls under the lines of :
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3011/3054750930_ea1579d559.jpg
(This chair is vintage, but is younge and fun because of the pink. You could change the color if you don't like it)
http://www.thefurniture.com/store/Images/Lea/JMV/bed-met.jpg
(This bed is VERY vintage and mature, but the metal working in the frames makes it more mystical-grownup-princess look for the mature younge woman look you are going for)
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/3369559/2/istockphoto_3369559-seamless-vintage-wallpaper-pattern.jpg
(This is just a pattern for wallpaper or fabric. Its modern but vintage for a happy medium in your bedroom. If this is too childish, but you like the pattern, go with a plain white wall and have a similar fabric.A black and white themed vintage room and you could add bit of color such as red or pink. OR even blue yellow and orange to make it more modern and young, and plain-out more fun!)
http://s3.amazonaws.com/pixmac-preview/seamless-vintage-wallpaper-pattern.jpg
(This wall paper or fabric is colorful! The fun thing about vintage fabrics is that they don't have to necessarily match. The fabricsis are very fancy-adult looking but if you mix and match fabrics it will give a more teenage fun messy, but not too messy, look)
http://dearada.typepad.com/dear_ada/images/2007/12/29/wp360820e.jpg
(With vintage is you can really make it your own. This is a younger fun vintage fabric or wallpaper. Vintage can have a lot of flowers so you can go with a more traditional flower such as the one below or you can go with a more modern flower such as the one above!)

(You also mentioned you were musical! If you had the budget after you were done remodeling your room maybe adding a piano thatâs nice clean white! Also if you got really into it you could add details into the piano. Or since you are into guitars a couple of white guitar stands!)
http://www.countryliving.com/cm/countryliving/images/Vintage-Vanity-White-Silver-HTOURS1206-de.jpg
(This vanity set is made in mind for the younge adult. Many drowers to put make-up in! Also note the decorations like the plant and lamp which will help you when you do put the final touches on your room!)
http://www.lampdoctor32.com/images/DSCF6751.jpg
(I know this may seem far-fetch but any vintage room is in need of a classic chandelier! It doesn't have to be real, it just all depends on your budget and the size of your room!)
http://www.designpublic.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/mediallion-mix3.jpg
(This picture is just showing modern decor for a vintage/victorian room. Also take note of the fun colors and wall papers. If you aren't a fan of wall paper than going with any of those colors in paint would work too! Also if you don't like bright colors and would like to "tone-it-down" going with pastel colors would work too!) Blue, purple, yellow, pink, orange,&green

Feng Shui bedroom mirror question...?

BritLdy

In my bedroom, my bed partially faces a mirror. I have no other options as far as furniture placement goes in the room. A friend told me that I should purchase a small Feng Shui Bagua Mirror to hang over my bed. My questions are...is this the correct course of action? If the mirror is the correct course of action. what is the reason for the mirror?

Please be sure to list your source.
I do not want to cover the mirror, so other suggestions please!

Answer
Mh... it would have really helped if you told me the location of your bedroom in the house. Mirrors represent water, so it's not a good idea to have them in the Fame/Reputation area. However, as a general rule, the Relationship area is extremely good for mirrors (round one, mind you), and it's good to have your bedroom here. If this is the case, try not to have it in front of the bed. If you can't change the mirror, then then a crystal ball hanging from the ceiling between the mirror and bed is a good cure. The reason is because it may startle you, and that's not good ever, and because of the angles it may be directing toward your bed.

How can I arrange my furniture?

skipper45c

My mom, (this is her account! sh! its a secret that I'm using this!). Anyways, my mom won't let me move my furniture around in MY room cause she thinks it will look messy. All I want to do is move my bed so its up against the wall (which all my friends do, so its not a big deal) so I have more room on my floor to hang out with friends. She won't let me cause she thinks it will be hard to make my twin size bed, and that it will look messy. Any advice on how i can convince her to let me do what I want?

Answer
Knowing where to place bedroom furniture can be tricky, especially in smaller bedrooms. Follow these steps to arrange your bedroom for comfort and style.

Draw a layout of the room on paper, including measurements and placements of all doors, windows, radiators and other permanent features. If you're computer savvy and doing more than one room, invest in a design software service available for home decorators.

Step 2Measure your furniture. Decorators recommend scissoring little cutouts to scale and label each one with it's name and measurement. This way you can simply move them around your layout to get an idea of what fits where.

Step 3Arrange and rearrange the pieces until everything fits and creates a nice flow throughout the room. Check whether you will bump your leg on something when you walk through this layout, whether the space between any two pieces is too tight or whether the layout looks strange. Keep rearranging until you are happy with the design.

Step 4Get creative with your solutions. All the furniture does not have to be lined up against the walls. Try placing the bed out of a corner, diagonally into the room. If you have a big blank wall and no headboard, try hanging a curtain rod and some curtains behind the bed to create a focal point.

Step 5Apply basic principals of Feng Shui. Clear clutter from all corners for better energy flow. Keep electrical equipment and wires hidden in a unit with doors. Electrical equipment emits electromagnetic waves that can hinder a peaceful sleep. Hiding them also adds elegance to the room.

Step 6Place the real furniture according to your paper layout. If you've done your homework on the layout, you'll be ready to move right in and everything should fit just like you planned it.

Help with Paint Palette for My Bedroom?

Michelle A

I need a palette that reminds you of an ocean at sunset.
I love the deep oranges and the golden yellows and reds.
However, I really love the color blue so i would like some how to add blue to it. But i just cant seem to find anything that goes well with those warm colors.

I dont like baby blues or light blues or teals.

Can you help me?

Answer
Orange & blue look great together!

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:
http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/

I think it would be perfect to paint your room "sunset" (# 6626), and then get one of these bedding sets:

You can also take a photo of your room & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

Answer
I have no idea how your furniture is arranged or even what pieces you have.
You have B&W bedding and like the color pink.
Keep many things a white white with pink accents. You can use both hot pink and soft pink.
Get a few great lamps. This overhead light is horrible.
Think about natural accents such as a woven headboard and baskets used for storage around the room.
Use light pink sheets with your bedding and then add a hot pink throw.
Use a very light blue on your walls .You can do one wall a darker blue if you like. make it the wall with the bed on it.Benjamin Moore "Lake Placid ,http://weedecor.com/2009/12/best-blue-nursery-paint/ This is the dark blue:http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/lakeplacid

Bedroom Ideas?

Pirates of

My niece is redoing her room for her birthday. She will be turning 15, she's kind of preppy, but she doesn't really want to do her room that way. She wants to get a new bed, she has a twin size bed at the moment, and she wants a queen size bed, she wants to a couch bed. Her bed faces her desk and she was thinking of puting a tv on her desk. She can't decide room colors, or window colors, or bed colors, or any styling ideas. I'm not so great. Someone is coming to help her decide what to do with her room, a stylist. We need to give her ideas so if anyone has any really cool pictures of some really nice rooms, that would be great. She was hoping to get away from the whole pink thing, unless it's like, light pink mixed with others colors. Blues, greens, light purples, anything that looks really nice. She wanted her room to look like one in a magazine. Maybe add a few new things, like a new nightstand or something. If you know any pictures, or something like that, please post them. Thxs

Answer
A full size bed would be a better choice and would last longer for later moves- Most "first apartment" Bedrooms aren't that big and a Queen size Bed might not fit. Since beds last a long time no point in buying 2. and you can fit a trundle bed under ir and then Have a Futon Chair that can also lay into a bed.

Also having a TV mounted onto the wall would give her more desk space- TV doesn't have to be a flat screen to mount. Soon if not now high school will keep her busy with school work and projects.

this room offers a nice color http://www.4myrooms.com/images/Furniture/hm867-1set.jpg

For stay at home moms or just people in general who are home all day and depressed?

mimi

I've never felt this way before but I've just been sad all the time and I think being home all day is the cause. I just recently graduated college and have been searching for a job for months. My husband is at work all day as well as my friends. I try to keep busy by cleaning house or even go shopping but then that gets old. I feel like I've gotten to a point where I don't have the energy to leave the house anymore. I could stay in bed all day but I would never want my husband to come home and see me like that so I drag myself to get dressed and put makeup on. Coffee use to be able to perk me up for a while and give me energy, now that doesn't even work anymore. I know I should probably be outside in the sun and go for a walk and maybe that would help, but I hate just being alone. I live in a boring city/big town with not much to do and sometimes wish I was somewhere else such as New York, Los Angeles...anywhere but here. I just know I should be doing so much more with my life but I feel so stuck in this city so little possibilities and I don't know what to do. Does anyone who is currently unemployed or stay at home moms ever feel this way?

Answer
Hi....Let me just say that I live right in the middle of NYC,actually I live in Long Island City,New York. And I am also a stay at home wife...BORING!!!! My husband works from 5am-5:30pm,M-Sunday.Yes 7 days a week!! So,I get very bored and lonely right here in the BIG city of NYC! I know exactly how you feel, especially with the whole coffe thing, funny how you mentioned that too.I drink my coffee really strong too,now it doesn't work for me anymore either.I stay home, cook, clean and make myself up pretty too with the make-up,hair(sometimes).But I just get so tired of even doing that! What I do now for myself is I got into a Woman's support group.I have to say that just because I live in a big city, doesn't mean you can't find a support group for yourself. So don't think that you can't find 1 due to the fact your NOT living in a big city!!! I'm also in a different counseling session every week besides my Woman's group.I only have 2 meetings a week, but it does help somewhat.Other than that,I don't do much.I'm not much of a window shopper,we don't have a lot of spending money. The rent here in NYC is terrible,we now pay $1,550 for just a 1 bedroom apartment,so we have a tight budget to live on.What you need to do is to find something/anything to pass your day.Not TV,not a computer...I am actually quite comfortable being along NOW I am anyways. My Woman's group counselor was very concerned about me staying home alone all the time. But I finally got her to see that I'm quite happy with it,but there ARE times I feel like you do.I get down, sad, depressed and SO freaking BORED!!! I'm NOT the kind pf person who can go out and party(GOD knows there is a lot of places here for that),I don't go out and eat a lot,I'm not a big fan of movies, museums(spelled it wrong maybe). But IF I do feel like I have to get out,I GO!! I know how you feel about your life NOT being fulfilled,I also wanna do something with my life.I'm almost 40,and I have nothing more than my GED! I have the ability to get a better education..and better yet,I can do that free, especially living here in NYC.The opportunites for a better education are wonderful, better health care(free for most),and so many other possibilities for me.I just don't have my get-up-and-GO anymore! And I hate IT!!!!! I'm also stuck dear..I wish you could tell me how to get myself out of my own rut.I know that MY issues with my rut...My issues are all my own self-pity!! I'm gonna have to get off my a$$ and do something about my LIFE! The longer I sit here and the more I complain, the longer and harder it will be for me to fulfill any of my goals and dreams I have set for myself. This IS the same for you too! I suggest to you..that you slowly start setting and making some goals for yourself, easy though!! Easy goals, just easy enough for you to accomplish and once you have accomplished 1 goal, then you move onto another EASY goal!!! So far...the goal I've set for myself is that I made myself an appointment for next week to get into a program called VESID,which will enable me to get into school free of charge. This is just 1 goal I've set for myself, even though it's ONLY an appointment it's a goal which I intent to achieve!! I don't have any of the answers that your looking for,but I do have advice as to help you set some realistic goals for your future.Try doing as I mentioned earlier, see what goals you accomplish, see how many you CAN accomplish.I have a good feeling that you WILL go somewhere in your town. You don't have to come to NYC or LA to make it in life.I wish you all the best and I have a good feeling that you'll do just fine with your life.GOD BLESS.

Whats the different between a Rural Community, a Urban Community, and a Suburban Community?

ash.

I have to do a Triple Venn Diagram for one of my classes, but I dont really know what the differences are. What do you find in a Rural Community, that you dont see in an Urban Community? What do they drive? What do people live in over there? (Apartments, condos, houses, etc.) Helppp pleaseeeee?

Answer
Rural is large tracts of land with plenty of Farms. Average land holding is 50 acres or more.
Urban is City Living with apartment buildings and heavy traffic
Suburban is a bedroom community for a major city.
They drive cars since the USA has roads every where.
Look up New York State. New York City is a Urban setting with High rises, condos, co ops, town houses and private homes. Most use public transportation since parking spaces are at a premium.
Long Island is a Suburban community with people for the most part working in the City. They drive and use public transportation. Then look at upstate NY roughly 250 miles from the city and you see Dairy Farms, State Land, Produce Farms, lakes, streams. Drive cars since no public transportation.

Curtain and Bed set ideas for a Blue walled Bedroom with grey white carpet?

I have a Columbia blue room. On 2 walls there are 2 colors sponged on but very lightly( green and a kind of pale yellow. On the 2 other walls there is the Columbia blue but then there are darker streaks of blue. I did not paint these walls, or choose the colors, but it is not an option to repaint. I am tying to get new curtains and new bed set. For my windows there is a white rim. Do you guys have any ideas for what I could get? I also would appreciate it if you would give me a website or a picture of the room that you found the bed idea in. If not thats okay too, I would like as many ideas as possible:) thank you so much
In a few year we will be getting wood floors, I don't know if this matters but... yea haha:) Thanks again!

Answer
Wow. I'd like to see a photo of that paint job. Whew.

Well, you seem to have a good attitude about it so I commend you for that.

You definitely need to stay away from any kind of pattern in your fabrics. Go with one color and I would imagine the lighter the better, I'd imagine. White or pale yellow might be good.

Or one option might be to EMBRACE THE COLUMBIA BLUE since it is the unifying color in all the walls! Maybe get white curtains and bedspread but go with the columbia blue in all your pillows and accessories with some white accents, too!
http://uglyhousephotos.com/wordpress/?p=25204

These photos may not be your colors, but they show how plain colors are what's needed to tone down the busyness of your sponged painted walls:
http://uglyhousephotos.com/wordpress/?p=9485

Here's an idea that could help cover the busy walls and should be inexpensive. Though the photo shows several busy fabrics in the hoops (or in any shape) on a plain wall - reverse it! If you decide on a specific color then put that in hoops of several sizes to maybe tone down the walls.
http://www.happymundane.com/2007/03/fabric-wall-inspiration/

One idea I might suggest is to pick which 2 wall colors you could easiest live with, then cover the other two walls with something.

Since you cannot paint, how about ceiling to floor and wall to wall curtains? Pick one of the colors from the walls you will keep exposed, or use white, and get plain colored sheets and hang them on the walls. Ikea has great ideas on how to hang curtains but if your budget is really low, just hang them flat with staples or push pins.

If your budget is really low, get large sheets of craft paper hung with removable tape as tiles in a brick fashion: http://patterni.net/brick-pattern-tiles/

Or rolls of butcher paper, and use removable tape, staples or push pins to hang. Then, if you want, you could write or draw on your walls, too! http://www.walltowallstencils.com/gallery/fullsize/bettywatsonjohn316.jpg

Another idea is folding screens. Find them at rummage sales and paint them the color of your choice to help hide the 2 walls you want to cover up.

You can go to the dollar stores in your area and look for sheets, rugs, fabric, paper, place mats, anything inexpensively that you can use to hang. Again, I would stick with plain colors but you never know - maybe something might inspire you there and you'll come up we a great idea of your own!

Here are several ideas for you to check out. Notice in the first photo how they worked with the colors in the various patterns. That's the idea - pick UNIFYING colors.

Elvish bedroom ideas?

ilikecats

I get to redo my bedroom, and really love the elves in lord of the rings and the hobbit. I've found curtains, but don't know how to incorporate the paint and foresty feel. I like the Mirkwood elves living area along with the elegance of the elves where arwen comes from. (I can't think of the name right now)
Please help!!
Thanks everyone

Answer
Have you looked at set photos from the Woodland Realm, Rivendell and Lothlorien? Obviously it would be difficult to come up with the sinuous carved wood stuff, but the gossamer curtains and woodland look would be easier to copy. There is a ton of decorating elvish style, but not much in the specific Woodland Realm/Mirkwood vein yet. If you google Art Nouveau anything, furniture design, art, stained glass windows, you'll see where a LOT of the film ideas came from.

would like to have a king size bed. what size does your bedroom need to be?

me

i really want a king size bed but i want it to fit i live in an apartment with the normal size bedroom
i dont want to take up the whole room i plan on getting a poster bed headboard my boyfreind says it about 12/12

Answer
In addition to thinking about how it will fit into your bedroom, also keep in mind getting it into your apartment. If you don't live on the main floor, you might have trouble. If you have to go up or down stairs, or around any sharp corners to get to your apartment, a king mattress and box spring set just might not fit. Also, will a king mattress/box springs fit through your bedroom door and your apartment door? They are huge. Just keep that in mind before making any purchases. You can bend and mash a mattress to a certain extent and you can get a split box spring set. I only mention this because I have that problem in my house--a stairway with a doorway at the bottom. We have a heck of a time even jamming a full size box springs through there. Good luck.

How much is a antique dixie bedroom set worth?

Elizabeth

I have a seven piece Dixie Bedroom set. It is a king size bed, two night stands, a mirror, and a dresser. All original set. There are gold pulls and the bed has four carved posters and sits up two feet off the ground. This set was my grandparents and has the Dixie stamp on the back of the pieces. I have no idea how much to sell this for or where to sell it. Any ideas?
This set is not antique. I would venture to call it vintage though. I can not find a date on it but do think it was made sometime in the late 40s/50s since it is a family heirloom from my grandparents. It has the Dixie stamp and an item number though and made in the U.S.A.

Answer
if it has a king size bed then it is unlikely to be an antique, furniture is supposed to be 100 years old before being called antique, and they did not use king size beds in 1910

Jewelry Armoire to match Timber Falls bedroom set?

Joey B

I'm looking for a Tall Jewelry Armoire to match the Timber Falls bed set from Ashley Furniture. Any suggestions?

http://www.libertylagana.com/Bedroom%20Set%20Links/B305a.htm

It says the Bedroom set is a "warm brown cherry finish"

Thanks.

Answer
Oooh, what a nice bedroom set! For accent pieces, I usually try to mix it up a bit so it's not too 'matchy matchy'. One of my favorite furniture companies is Powell, and I especially love their jewelry armoires. I think this one would complement the style of the bedroom set well http://www.thefurnituredomain.com/582-314.html while adding a little bit of color. This site offers free shipping on everything, too, so that's always a bonus! Hope this helps :)

Bedroom set off Craigslist?

Savannah

So, they are asking $700 for everything including the mattress. How much should I offer them for everything *but* the mattress? 500? 600? How much would the Matress and boxspring be worth? It's a Cal King set.

Answer
If it's a King Size bed, mattresses are pretty pricey for it. So, they probably want to sell it all together. Just email them first, and ask if they would be willing to sell the set without the mattress, before you name a price. But, yes I'm thinking 500 - 600.

My grandma gave me a brand new bedroom set for my daughter. However it's blue. How can I change the color?

dbestonegi

Its a wood set. I was wondering if it could be either painted or spray painted. I want the most easiest, decent, way to change the color. And tips?

Answer
Changing the color of a bedroom set is one of the easiest and most cost-efficient ways to completely redo the look and image. You'll be amazed at the results! And before I forget, the second easiest and most cost-efficient way to redo the set is to change the hardware, if there is any. It's amazing what contemporary pull knobs in brushed stainless will do for even colonial looking furniture...once it's painted, of course. So back to that.

The first thing you need to do is prepare the furniture so that when you do put your paint on, it won't eventually peel or flake off. So clean the furniture well. Use TSP which you can find at your local hardware store. I suggest you use the liquid kind as opposed to the powder, which not only will you have to measure, mix and rinse, but it's toxic. The liquid is biodegradable, it's easier to mix and you don't have to rinse it.

Once all dirt, grease and grime are removed and the wood has dried, you'll need to prepare it according to it's surface. Lightly sand the wood with a fine grain paper, just enough to make it easier for the following products to adhere.

You'll want to prime the surface. I suggest you use an oil-based primer, since
a) the wood of the bedroom set is most likely protected with an oil-based varnish and
b) ANYTHING sticks to oil-based primer.

I really like either Kilz or Bullseye 1-2-3. These are primer paints that are even used to get rid of graffiti and will make a perfect canvas for your new paint color, allowing an even covering and a professional looking finish.

Now comes the fun part! You've chosen your paint color. Do you use spray paint, or brush it on??? You get to decide: It's certainly much more work to spray paint furniture, because you have to protect the surrounding area and do the work in a well-ventilated area. And you have to have patience. When they say on the instructions that 2 or more light coats are better than one thick one, THEY ARE TELLING THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH! Unless you don't care about leaks and drips... So if you don't have the patience to do 2 or 3 or maybe even 4 thin coats, don't go there. Drips are horrendous and will make you hate the furniture. But it's important to know that spray painting is how furniture makers paint their furniture. It really does give the nicest professional finish. I usually opt for spray painting in about 80-85% of the time when talking about repainting furniture and decorative objects.

If you want to get it done with with less preparation fuss, you'll want to use a roller or a paint brush... sponge brush & roller if you're using oil paint, and bristle and normal roller for latex paint. If you do use latex, either make it a washable latex finish or also plan on applying a sealer (latex also, available in finishes from mat all the way up to high gloss). But keep in mind that if you aren't careful - especially in nooks and crannies - you'll still get leaks and drips. Just in case you're curious, I'll opt for spray painting about 80% of the time...

Have you thought of the color you want to paint? What is your daughter's room like now, or are you planning on changing the whole scheme and or theme of the room? What kind of a feel do you want the furniture to have: zen, princess, tomboy, laura ashley, etc.) If you're interested, please feel free to email me and I'll give you a few more ideas and tips.

Whatever you decide, remember that paint is THE QUICKEST, FASTEST, MOST COST-EFFICIENT WAY to revamp anything... or almost... And keep in mind, if you do make a mistake, you can fix it again!

Has any body here has ever bought a bedroom set that they sell for around $600?

craigs l

I am thinking on buying one of those sets but I would like to hear from people who have. How is it in quality and durability?

Answer
I have sold furniture in many price ranges and I have to tell you that a complete bedroom set for 600 can look good going in and if youre not giving it alot of use and like the look of it Great! Consignment stores sell bedroom sets in this pricerange that are often selling for 3,000 originally.
I would check that out.
Check the construction of your 600 furniture, it will be flimsy in the back, have plastic and metal parts, and will be heavy particle board with vinyl veneers , these peices often do not move well, if you move alot better invest in a good quality used bedroom set

Help with a Parisian themed bedroom?

LEANNE

We are moving house next month and I want to make my daughters room special.
Her room is medium sized and a blank canvas at the minute. I don't have a budget to buy expensive one piece items but I'm not on a tight budget for the overall cost of the room.

So we were thinking Parisian. What sort of colors would you suggest and flooring? She is only 4 and likes whimsical, retro things so would like it to be in that style. Maybe the walls being more so like that and just bedding and furnishings to tie it in. Any ideas/suggestions would be great. I really don't know what colours to go for or how to dress the windows so please help me with this!

Thanks xx

Also we're in the UK

Answer
The old world charm of a Parisian bedroom theme has grown in popularity in the new millennium. Parisian-style bedroom decor adds worldly ambiance to the space. Find inspiration for your room's design in a Paris cafe, a Paris salon or the French countryside. French art, accessories, images and objects will give your bedroom a romantic Parisian feel.

Color Palettes

A typical Parisian theme color palette features neutral beige tones with gold. Other color schemes lean toward pink on pink, pink on black, or blue on green. Knowing the color palette first will help guide the design, enabling you to incorporate the appropriate colors throughout the bedroom. Parisian-inspired accents and a black-and-pink color scheme will create the chic French flair indicative of the heart of Paris. This bold color scheme can include other warm neutral tones, or can be kept exclusive.

Parisian Inspired Walls and Ceilings

Walls displaying Parisian-inspired art or accents will bring the theme to life. Parisian-inspired wall decal stickers set the tone of the design. Eiffel Tower-themed wallpaper and faux chandeliers create other possibilities for the walls and ceilings. Horizontal and vertical stripes are also commonly found in Parisian bedrooms. A mismatched photo wall displaying French art or personal pictures in various types of frames will create a bohemian Paris boutique feel.

Furniture

Parisian-style bedroom furniture functions as a focal point in the design. A black or dark brown canopy bed frame creates a more contemporary look, while a distressed wrought-iron bed frame recalls a classic Parisian cafe. Vintage Versailles-inspired tables, desks and chairs with skinny and sculpted legs also help complete the look.

Accessories

Parisian-inspired accessories will make the theme truly come to life in your bedroom. One accessory every Parisian themed bedroom needs is the Eiffel Tower. Available Eiffel Tower accessories include pillows, wall decals, bedding, clocks, candle holders, sculptures, photos and wall art. Hang paintings, prints or posters of Paris scenes for an authentic feel. Incorporate a floating shelf or deep windowsill displaying French art and accessories for a finishing touch.
