so im dealing with movers and i am trying to figure out how much my bedroom set weighs, it a queensize bed with 2 nightstands, a dresser with mirror and a chest...i have no idea how much it could weigh and im really hoping its under 700lbs...

Answer
Without access to a large scale, I would imagine the best way to find out would be to take it apart in manageable pieces and weigh it on a home scale. It could be a pain and not be all that accurate, but could give you a ballpark figure. Otherwise, just ask the movers and see what they say. They should have an idea if they will surcharge you, and perhaps get a couple of opinions.

What do *you* keep in your nightstand drawers?

GrlNamedJa

I've just purchased my first nightstand as part of a new bedroom set. The drawers have remained empty for 2 weeks because I don't have any idea what is "supposed" to go in there.

Answer
Well I have weird stuff if mine, like cocoa butter lotion, deodorant, nail file, nail polish, Q-tips, Band-Aids, and my husbands beard trimmer- top drawer. Heating pad in the bottom drawer. On top I have a phone, alarm clock, tissues, and a candle.

Some suggestions for you would also include a good book, lip balm, Listerine breath strips or your favorite mints, lotions, oils, personal items of choice, pen, writing pad...etc.

Don't worry, after a time stuff will just accumulate in them and you will wonder how all that crap got in there! lol

How do I make my apartment to feel more like my "home"?

I moved in my 1st apartment 2 months ago, and we have all our furniture, but now I want to make it feel more like my home. What are some ways I can do this? What are some good color-schemes and ideas? I would alos like to get some pictures of me and my boyfriend done and blown up to hang on the walls. Does anyone know about how much this would cost me?

Answer
Without knowing the size and layout of your apartment, what you have to work with, what styles and colors you like, etc., it would be difficult to give specific advice.

If you're permitted to paint the walls (check your lease agreement or ask your landlord), you can really do a lot to warm up the space. If not, there are still ways to bring in some colors that you love.

I can give you some general advice. The easiest way to decorate any room is to start with a fabric element. Find either curtains, a rug (for the bedroom, it could be bedding ... for a bathroom, a shower-curtain perhaps), or use the color of your furniture as a starting point. If the fabric is multi-colored (stripes, pattern, etc, so much the better!) because this will give you a ready-made color scheme! Make this element something that you absolutely LOVE.

Take one of the colors from the fabric (either the same shade, or a lighter/darker tone of that color) and use it for your wallcolor. It is MUCH easier to match paint to fabric than vice-versa.

Then pick one or two of the other colors in your fabric ... remember, they don't have to be exact matches ... and use those as accents around the room. Throw pillows, candles, picture frames, lamps, even artwork ... those are all great places to pick up color. Use a color in at least 3 places within the room to keep the look cohesive.

Before you do anything, take some time to figure out what you actually LIKE. A good way to do this is to look through home-decorating magazines and cut out pictures of rooms that you like. Don't try to analyze WHY you like them ... just collect them at first. THEN, after you have a bunch, try to find common elements (colors, furniture-types, etc.) ... this will give you some clues as to which styles you find most appealing, and will help you when you shop for items for your apartment.

Also browse some websites. HGTV has a HUGE site with thousands of photos and ideas. There are rooms done by top designers as well as photos submitted by viewers. Here's the link:

About taking and blowing up the pictures, I don't even have a guess about the cost ... you could ask at a copy-shop. They should be able to give you a rough idea, if you explain what you want!

Tips for creating or maximizing space in a small room?

renae84

Does anyone have any good tips on how to create more space in a small room? The room i am working with is already occupied but i am trying to create more space in the room, I have already gone through thing and gotten rid of alot but the room still seems really packed. Any ideas on ways to create more space? I know it might be hard with no pictures or layouts but any advice or tips you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
paint it a light, kinda bright color, so it seems more open and big.
also bring a lot of light in there, maybe get sheer curtains.

if its a bedroom, then store stuff under the bed, or ikea makes great sofa beds that don't take up a lot of space.

get small furniture that doesn't take up a lot of space.
and use lighter furniture so that you don't notice it as much, making the room seem larger.

i hope this kinda helps.
good luck :]

How much would it cost to redo a teenage bedroom?

My bedroom wall color is a barn red. It doesnt match anything so my mom told me that i can redo my whole room. Im planning on getting new furniture if that helps.
P.S if anyone knows where i can find a zebra bed set please let me know.

Answer
Depending on exactly what you are doing, it should cost under $500 to redo your room.

Paint is inexpensive, but with a color like barn red, you are going to have to do a few coats to cover it.

A Zebra themed room is fun. It may be difficult to find a zebra bed set, but there is no reason why you can't have zebra accessories everywhere other than the bed. Find a solid bed set in a color you like (pink, turquoise, white) that will work well with your furniture. Add zebra print pillows all over the bed.

Your floor is a great place to really add that 'animal' style. Try this zebra print rug http://houseofarearugs.com/Nolita-1310-Black-And-White-p-216.html .

Finish up with smaller accessories, such as zebra printed candles and picture frames.

What color should I paint my room?

Julia

Ok so tomorrow I'll be officially living in my new house. I'm getting my room completely f redone. It's kind of a small room. There's a closet with wooden doors that slide open. I have two windows with black curtains. My bed spread consists of 1 dark pink pillow, 2 zebra print pillows, pink sheets, black thick blanket, and a cheetah print one that goes on top of the thick black one. The border of my room is wood, same with around the windows. Im 13 BTW. All of my furniture matches. What color should I paint it?:

*I have the bed, and drawer with 4 drawers, if that helps?!.:)

Answer
I check the link that you offer, if your funiture like this, you need use some light color, not dark color to paint your room, as you said, your room is a little small, so how about using some light torquise color or some light purple color to make the wall be fresh and cool. It is also can well match with your home decor. Then the curtain I think it will be pure white is better, it will let your room feel spacious. Then add area rugs to make the floor cozy, use crochet table cloth and table runner to make the desk delicate, by the way, here is a webstore on amazon, it has many pretty home decor, hope can help you.

What's the best surround sound system for music in a small room?

Z

I am completely new to surround sound systems, and all the terminology is so confusing. I need a surround sound system that works well for music, is around $100-$200 (new or used), and is good for a 10x12 bedroom. It may end up getting used for a TV down the road, so it would we be good if it also sounds okay for television. I'd really appreciate any help I can get, I feel so clueless!

Answer
are you looking for a 5.1 or 7.1? for $200, well you're in a very tight budget, so you might as well get a entertainment system. try this HT-D550ZA - samsung. it's under $200 in bestbuy. if you are really looking for a very good surround system, forget about bose. i mean, bose is so overrated and the sound quality really sucks. the best speakers out there are defeinitive, martin logan, b&w, vienna acoustics to name a few. i have only a 3.1 set up, all martin logans and i already spent about $4000 just for the center channel speaker, left and right spearkers, and the sub. i want to set it up for a 5.1 but, i don't have enough room to put the 2 speakers, but, i tell you this, i only have 3.1, but the sound quality is superb.

Could a person claim housing benefit in London if they work?

Jason Telf

Can you claim housing benefit in London if you work.

Just curious. If I moved to London would I be able to get housing benefit because the prices of the houses in London are stuff like £150 a week and that's only for a room in a shared house.

To go for a 1 bedroom flat it goes up to about £240 a week and a studio is a bout £175 or £200 a week.

This seems a lot to me and those are just the basic rents for furnished accommodation with bills included. They are nothing fancy - a place to live and that's it.

Oh and they are in central London where I'd want to be.

So if I worked earning about £237 a week, could I claim housing benefit?

Answer
It depends on your income and age.

Housing benefit is set by each council, and isn't centrally managed, so you'd need to speak to your council to see what, if anything, you'd be eligible for.

If you're under 35, you're only eligible for the cost of a room in a shared house, and not a full flat.

I have a small messy room that i hate It is sky blue and has virtually no furniture that I use
I want to somehow incorporate an Asian/soccer theme into my room and the wall color idea I was leaning towards was like a sage but slightly lighter
ANYWAY!- I need some ideas please and perhaps where to find affordable bedroom furniture
Thnx!

Answer
I shop at Goodwill, Salvation army, and browse the furniture for sale ads in the newspaper. If you are going to look for the bed at a second-hand store, then don't worry about the color because you can add paint to change the look completely. I am not sure about an Asian/soccer theme, but here are some links for you to see Asian comforters online - http://www.domestications.com or http://www.domestications.com/dept.asp?N=0&Ne=1&Nu=p_RollupKey&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&Ntk=all_fields&dept_id=0&Ntt=asian&issearch=1&Image2.x=11&Image2.y=10. Hee is another company - http://brylane.com. This link will take you to a comforter that is not Asian but it includes your sage and with some Asian artwork you can make it look Asian - http://brylane.com/decor/Regatta-Comforter-Set.aspxPfId=170069&DeptId=15166&ProductTypeId=1&PurchaseType=0
I suggest getting the comforter and window treatments and then decide on a color for your wall. For Japanese style decor, natural tones of brown, grey, and tan are popular. Accents in most Asian decors include gold, either as trim or wall color. Also, try to include bamboo.

What color flooring for espresso colored furniture?

Lisa

My dining room and living room furniture is espresso colored. Any ideas for what shade of hardwood would compliment these and how about wall colors? I definately like color and find whites and off-white quite boring on walls.

Answer
my bedroom has espresso furniture and a very light wood floring its not close to white or anything but a light shiny wood and it looks great.
