How do I re-finish a bedroom furniture set?

I'm looking to refinish my bedroom dressers and nightstand. My plan is on plugging the holes left from the old hardware, sanding off the current finish, drilling new holes for the new hardware, and restaining it. What types of finsih should i look at? I want it to be black, but dont know what types of stain i should use and if i need to polyurthene it as well.

Answer
If you have a really stubborn varnish to get through, I would recommend chemically stripping the wood. If you're only planning on sanding the wood and not first stripping it, you'd better have some damn good equipment! If you just have a common orbital sander you're going to wear yourself out and not get very far in the process. If you have a disk or a belt sander you'll be able to remove the varnish a lot quicker, but then you have to be careful not to sand too deeply and ruin your piece. If your furniture has legs or any curved areas it can be hard to sand. You'll only need to lightly sand the furniture after using a chemical stripper, and then it'll be so smooth you'll want to get naked and wiggle on it! Well, maybe not... but you get the idea. Look for a chemical stripper that says "no clean-up" or washes clean with water. Definitely wear gloves and a mask.

What kind of paintings for bedroom with simple traditional furniture in light oak?

starryeyed

The bedroom set is plain, but has a traditional oak feel and tri=fold mirror.
Any ideas for an imagery theme, other than roses/flowers?
My man has no particular ideas for this room, so I don't have much input there...
Thanks!

Answer
A collection of family photographs in ornate oak frames might be nice. Children's artwork can also be framed to add a happy feeling to the room. You can frame just about anything. Frame several pieces of color coordinating fabric and hang in a cluster on the wall. Go to a flea market to scout for old picture frames of various sizes and hang in a group, one inside of the other. Or, take one large frame and hang on the wall. Paint your own picture directly on the wall inside the frame. Check out this web site for more bedroom ideas.

Max's old childhood friend, Ari, now an Eraser leader, tracks them down, kidnaps Angel, and transports her back to the School to live like a lab rat again. Blood & Chocolate by Annette Curtis- Vivian is a teenage werewolf. When the moon is high, she feels the call to run wild in the woods, to feel the forest floor beneath her paws. But, when she moves into a new town, she meets a boy. A human. Her family disapproves but she is head over paws. With growing tension within her pack and her lack of control over her own abilities, she wonders if her boy will love her, or more importantly, if he will survive loving her. Jealously, isolation and competition within her extended family all threaten what tender happiness she tries to build.

The Mediator by Meg Cabot-Susannah Simon is no ordinary girl, she can see and speak to the dead. Not that she’s happy about it; nobody wants ghosts popping into their bedroom every night. But when her mom remarries and Suze is forced to move to California she meets the perfect boy, there’s only one problem, he’s dead.

Evermore by Alyson Noel-Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch. He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets. Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking—and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head. . Hi,

You can find elegant, cheap home furniture sets at IKEA. Don't discount Craig's list.

Also, you can get bargain furniture many times at local garage and estate sales; especially these days with the economic situation.

bedroom furniture ideas for men image

kggeezer

I just moved across the country (Pennsylvania to Arizona) to be with my boyfriend. For the last couple years he has been living alone, doing the bachelor thing. Since I got here I've been cleaning up the HUGE mess that he has made since the last time I was out to visit. Now that I'm about done with all the scrubbing and making this place habitable I mentioned to him that I wanted to do a little decorating. He's not really wanting to give up his girly posters and bar signs in the living room... and his giant bullets, rocket launchers, and guns on the (plastic) dining room table. (Btw... he's a former Marine which I totally love and respect... and I have no problems with the guns... just where they are...lol)
I don't want to "take over" now that I'm here... I just want to add a little art and some style.
Any ideas on things I could do to make it a little more stylish and a little less single man-ish without totally freaking him out?? Maybe certain colors or styles that are cohesive?

Answer
The HGTV show "Get It Together" is all about that exact situation:
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hgitt

If he's like the men I know, he won't necessarily want to *shop* with you, but if you choose some things & show them to him prior to purchasing, then he'll at least feel like he has some input in the design & concede to your desire for redecorating.

To begin with, I would find a nice display case for his guns, and maybe put them somewhere along the edge of the room, out of the way, or in another room entirely, like one of the bedrooms.

If you can, paint. IMHO, nothing adds life & personality to the room better than great color. Choose something that you think he will also like (read: "not too girly), like Sherwin Williams' "lagoon" or "kendal green".

In the living room, create one wall totally devoted to his stuff. I don't know what kind of "girly" posters he has, but if they're tasteful, I would ask him to choose one or two of his faves & then frame them. Framing makes anything look like real art. The other posters can be relocated to another part of the house. Same with the bar signs - ask him to choose one or two, and then maybe put the rest in the kitchen. Or all of the bar signs could go in the kitchen & you could design around that theme.

Another idea - if you choose art that would appeal to him, like these:
http://homedecorators30.artselect.com/search2/openct12403~3D12419~2C5178~26t~3Dc5178/Art_Deco.html
http://homedecorators30.artselect.com/search2/openct12403~3D12419~2C1983~26t~3Dc1983/Pop_Art.html
then maybe he'll be willing to give up his posters & bar signs.

Choose some solid color living room furniture, maybe leather, and some dark wood pieces with clean lines. For example:

This family lives next door to me and they are wonderful caring people. Anytime someone else is in need they are the first ones to help. Yesterday all of the bedrooms in their house were destroyed by fire, water and smoke damage. They have called the Red Cross but there is only so much that they can do. The family has two small children and they are in need of clothing and the family really needs some help getting the house fixed. We live in Houston Texas...If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks

Answer
Try to raise awareness in the community. It sounds like these are great people so it shouldnt take much to get some people to contribute a little here and there. You would be surprised how generous people can be. Just start calling around or try to set up a fundraiser so the family can have some of the basics they need right now. I take my hat off to you for trying to do something, hopefully others will follow. Good luck.

Anyone know where I can get an affordable 2 bedroom apartment in Houston?

The Travel

Alright here's the deal
I'm a college student at the University of Houston - Downtown campus.
My roommate is going to be working at a place off Gray St.
We're looking for a 2 bedroom apartment near the area (not too far but inside the loop)
Is there anyone out there who can give me a heads up on where to look?
Or if you have experience with an apartment complex near the area?
Thanks!!!

Answer
More info needed.

Hopefully your room mate earns a nice paycheck and you come from a rich family, if you want an inner loop place that doesn't have dirt floors and junkies at your door for less than $1500 per month for a one bedroom, because location is everything.

Camden Heights
404 Oxford Street, Houston, TX 77007
(281) 733-2683

This place is about 1/2 mile north of West Gray, nestled in The Heights. Recent construction in a very desirable area very close to downtown and accessible to Metro. The cheapest 2/2 will set you back $1725/mo.

Good luck.

What time do you usually go to bed on a weekday?

bedroom set seattle
 on Bedroom Set
bedroom set seattle image

Nicholas v

I went through this insomnia phase last spring and wouldn't fall asleep until 4am, now I sleep at 2am which somewhat better, but still it's hard getting up in the morning.

Answer
I am retired, so any day for me is open... weekdays, weekends, it all is the same to me... I tend to drop off around midnight and wake up without an alarm clock about 7 or so. I'm flexible that way. Sometimes, I stay up later and then I end up sleeping in the following morning. However, my usual amount of sleep is about 7 hours plus or minus a bit. I rarely am up beyond 2 AM but it does happen occasionally and that is when I set the alarm clock for 7 AM so my daily routine does not change too much. Stay away from caffeine after 6 PM, so it will be out of your system by 10 PM or so. And skip the munchies after 6 PM as well. Sugar and caffeine will keep awake, so limit things to plain tap water after 6 PM. Many processed foods have a huge amount of sugar. Bacon for example, may be sugar cured, but you won't taste it at all because it is covered up by the bacon fat. The thing to do is to not do anything else in bed but sleep. That puts sleep into a habit thing, bed = sleep. If you lie in bed and watch TV or play video games, again, it becomes habit forming and you won't sleep when you should be. And THAT is why I have a clock radio/alarm in my bedroom, but NOT any other entertainment devices. I suffer from tinnitus, ringing in the ears, and if I do not have background noise (I prefer classical music and I have a local PBS station which is ALL classical) of some kind, it drives me up the walls, like fingernails on a chalk board. I live alone, in a forested area 25 miles west of Seattle. It is really, really quiet here, which is one reason why I bought this house. When I moved here, I knew the silence would be a problem for me, but to live out is a forest instead of a busy downtown in a city was too good to pass on.

I don't want the whole room to be brown!! I want color, so would anyone have an suggestions on what color to paint the wall? I want an accent color, please help!

ALSO.. the sectional we just bought is also BROWN!!
Here is the sectional :::
http://americanfreight.us/displaySingleProduct.php?item=370

I don't want all brown!!! What should I paint the walls? I want an accent, maybe a red? PLEASE HELP!!!

Answer
For the living room, i suggest a color called "reddened earth" by sherwin williams. it will coordinate with the sofa to create a warm natural feel in the room.

As for the bedroom, i think a mauve, like "damsel," would look good with the brown.
http://sherlink.sherwin.com/swapp/color_visualizer/index.jsp
If you want to do an accent wall, then I would use "damsel" on one wall, and then paint the others "summit gray" (more of a green tone, actually).

Good luck!

best cheap safe country to live in?

Boo

I'm expecting my first child this fall. Can anyone recommend a nice country where I can find work and live in that's outside of the US & other than Canda? I'm looking for:

1) English speaking country-
I'm Asian & hoping for a place that isn't hostile to foreigners

2) Safe for women

3) VERY cheap apartments & childcare-
In America, a 1 bedroom averages about $600 including bills. And then there's childcare, which costs just as much. That alone is already way too much for a single mother who is completely on her own. I'm looking for a country where those expenses would be about half of that.

4.) Somewhere tourist-y
So I can find employment easily, work my butt off to save money & come back to the US one day and raise my child decently.

Some people have suggested Tunisia, Thailand, Phillipines, Malaysia. Opinions? Other reccomendations?

Answer
TUNISIA

I am an American living in Tunisia and I love Tunisia very much!

Situated on the Mediterranean Sea, it is the northernmost African country, and the smallest of the nations situated along the Atlas mountain range, bordering Algeria, to the west, and Libya to the south east.

The country is so full of history (has been under the rule of Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Berbers, Ottomans, Beys, and French; played a significant part in WWII, was the center of the ancient world with Carthage as the capitol, etc) and it has so many beautiful places to visit! It is unlike any other Arab country in that is has a lot of greenery. There are also many historical ruins in just about every part of the country you go to.

The mountain region is breathtaking! There are fantastic views and an the atmosphere is reminiscent of an old town in Switzerland. Absolutely gorgeous! The coast is marvelous. The Sea is clear and picturesque. The midland and south are terrific because they offer you the chance to peek into a forgotten society - one that holds fast to tradition. I have been all over Tunisia and have visited most cities and have loved everyone because they each have their own special charm.

The people are so warm and hospitable. They instantly welcome you as one of their own and treat you like family. Tunisia is also a very safe place. There are not many places in this world where a women can walk the streets alone in the middle of the night without fear. Yet I often take late night walks and have never had any problems and have never felt fearful. Tunisia on a whole is a very safe country. I have lived in Tunis and Monastir and have visited other parts of the country without any problems.

$1 is equal to 1.314 TDN
http://finance.yahoo.com/currency?u

Things are pretty reasonably priced here in Tunisia. Let me give you some examples.

A 1.5L bottle of mineral water costs .400TDN ($.30), but most people buy them is cartons of 6. Just a way to not have to go to the store all the time to buy water. A 1L bottle of coke is 1TDN ($.76), while a 1.5L bottle is 1.500TDN ($1.14).

Taxi rides are pretty cheap, but if you want to save on that you can always walk. A taxi ride is usually around 3TDN ($2.28) depending on how far you are going and what city you will be in.

Food prices will depend on what type of restaurant you want to go to. A fast food place will cost you about 3TDN ($2.28) per person if you buy a coke along with your sandwich. An actual restaurant will run you anywhere between 20-30TDN total($15.22-$22.83) for 4 people, including drinks, and many times dessert as well.

Housing is cheap too, depending on what city, where in the city, and how big a place you are looking for. Rents run anywhere between 150TDN-500TDN ($114.14-$382.73). Water and Electricity bills come every 3 months, and those depend on how much you use. I'll use ours as a reference. Our last water bill was 8 TDN ($6.13) and our last electricity bill was 35TDN ($26.81).

Child care depends on where you take them, but can run anwhere from 25-50TDN a month ($19.15-$38.30)

Tunisia is definitely geared towards tourism. I suggest you check out the Tunisia section under travel http://answers.yahoo.com/dir/index;_ylt=Ajvu_tkLcfQ.OLPZ1SISVG7sy6IX?sid=396545482

What would your dream bedroom look like?

Answer
it would be super comfy with a great looking king size bed that is so soft that i sink on it, apart from bed, i will have a great looking 40 inch tv on the oppsite wall to the bed where i can watch tv when i want, lying down or sitting up

then i would want a huge set of cabinets, either an entertainment center in middle of which my tv is accomodated along with shelves for my dvd and music system and a seperate area for display, i would dedicate the top of my cabinet area for display with a glass where i would display all my miniatures i got from london and dubai and malaysia, they are so cute i wana see them all the time

along with this, there will be an added section for books, of course with glass doors so i can have a look at my precious collection whenever i want, this will completely occupy the opposite wall to the bed and make a great storage area as well, on the othe wall i have my dresser and closet, all 4 corners of the room occupied with good looking and strong bedroom wooden furniture while the middle space i have left empty to walk around with a nice colorful rug to fill it up

i love my room really and its so comfortable for me as my cabinets store away all the things that i want to keep hidden leaving the room neat and organized

How much should I sell my bedroom furniture for?

Tamee

I have a black 7 piece queen size bedroom set with two night stands, a dresser and a mirror that I purchased for $1600 about 16 months ago. I also paid $600.00 for some pillow top mattresses. Everything looks brand new. Someone offered $700. How much should I sell it for? Mattresses included.

Answer
The best answer is whatever you can get for it, I think $700 isn't a good price for it, but it's most probably close to what it's worth at most.

When you buy new, you're paying for the over heads as well. If you place an add in a free online site saying what you have is new or bought 2 weeks ago, you'd be very lucky to get 70% of that $2200 you paid for it. Reason being that buying from a store you have in general an amount of consumer protection for the most part.

What most people don't understand, is that the store bought that product or those goods for a fraction of what they sold it for, to cover their over heads. My Ex used to work for a big department store, I was surprised to find out that some items have a 500% mark up, I'm not saying there was a 500% mark up on your goods, but I'm guessing at least 100% if not more.

Websites for bedroom furniture?

rainy show

I want new bedroom furniture. I like dark colors, modern, simple, teenager style, and comfortable. Do you know any websites where they might sell furniture like this. It doesn't have to be everything I listed, but pretty close. I'd also like it if the website had a desk that matches the bedroom set. Nothing too pricey (under $2,500) and pretty good quality. Thank You!

Also, if you know a website where I can find accessories (lamps, sheets, ect.), then pleas list! Thanks again.

Answer
There are lots of websites with lots of product. The problem is the price doesn't always match the quality. If you plan on only keeping your furniture for 1 to 5 years and treat your furniture with kid gloves Ikea may be a good choice, however, ask anyone that has had Ikea furniture for a while or attempted to move it. It tends to auto destruct upon moving. Those cam lock type assembly hardware just don't like to be moved. What makes it fairly inexpensive is what makes it poor quality. The whole thing is about freight and warehouse space. This should NOT YOUR PROBLEM. In my humble opinion, virtually all assemble yourself furniture is inferior quality mostly made of particleboard filled with formaldehyde. My family and I have been in the furniture business both manufacturing and retailing for over 60 years. Our retail store went on line almost 20 years ago. I understand both manufacturing and retailing. I sell what I make every day of the week in my store. Consider checking out a local store with less than 5 to 10 stores. in my experience the larger the chain, the poorer the quality and service. Also, in this difficult housing market, many both large and small stores are struggling and over 20,000 retail furniture stores both large and small have gone out of in business in the last 18 months. PAY BY CREDIT CARD for a little protection. I have noticed fairly good quality furniture in Costco. In the STORE not on line. It is very seasonal for them and the selection is very limited but well priced and good quality. Also please check out our website and blog @ www.barnfurniture.com

How do I find out how much a bedroom set and dining room set (both 50+ years old) are worth to sell?

bedroom set with desk

bedroom set with desk image

dennismd20

Both sets are made of wood, dark cherry finish. Bedroom set has 7 pcs. (headboard, footboard, vanity, bench, dresser, mirror, and chest). Dining room set has table w/leaf, 6 chairs, china cabinet, and chest. Antiques? Where to sell?

Answer
Go to the library and ask the information desk about finding a book to help you price the pieces. I did and found out I had a table worth $11,000. I was shocked.(no I didn't sell it). You can also look under the furniture and try and find the manufacturer and then do a computer search. Once you find a price you can go to Craigslist or put it in an antique store on consignment. Or just put an ad in your local paper or Penny Saver.

How is your bedroom set up?

B(^_^)b

I am redecorating my own bedroom [only I live there] and I'm wondering how all of you have their bedroom set up. For example, I'm torn between having my bed or desk next to the window...

Answer
My bedroom is so random right now do you really want to know? Haha. Ok my bed is against the wall, tv infront of bed against the other wall, dresser across the other wall, a chair in the middle of my room (it's just there for no reason), an old school desk beside the tv (I swear I used it in like 3rd grade), and scattered books and movies on the floor near my bed.

I like to decorate, once in a great while I'll get the motivation to change a room and I'm great at it.

You should have your desk next to the window so when you think about something you can look out and imagine all the endless possibilities.

What's it like to live in San Antonio?

bedroom set denver

bedroom set denver image

Big Bear

I'm thinnking of moving there. I would like to know all over temps in a year, tornados, rain, etc.. Also, fees for renting a 2 or 3 bedroom house. Crime rates, traffic, employment?
Thanks for all of your help !

Answer
San Antonio is a very affordable city. The rents are considerably cheaper than major cities anywhere else in the US. You asked about renting, though in San Antonio, renting is really very similar in cost for a 3 bedroom house to buying. The housing cost in the Texas area are quite reasonable, but the property taxes are higher than many states. This is, however, offset by Texas having no personal income tax.

San Antonio is one of America's fastest growing cities. The city was the 11th largest in the US in 1995, 9th largest in 2000 and was 7th largest in 2006 now having grown larger than Dallas as the second largest city in Texas. This rapid growth does have some affect on both traffic and crime. Certain areas of the city have traffic issues at high traffic periods, though this is common in any major city, and certainly no worse in San Antonio. The crime rate for the overall city is higher than the Texas and National average, but that is also common in any major city. However, there are many areas of the city where the crime rates are at or below the state and national average. Additionally, in some areas, if a careful examination of the crime statistics by the San Antonio Police Department is made, you will find the crime is mostly limited to shopliftting and crimes against business and property, in those areas personal crime (ie. rape or murder) is minimal.

Good sources of information about an area of town are:
www.homefair.com or www.city-data.com and look at the city reports by the zipcode you are considering living in. Homefair will break down the types of crime into personal/property and further break it down if you examine closely.

As far as weather, if you don't like the weather in San Antonio, wait a few minutes...

Actually, in general, the weather in the area is usually very temperate. The average low in January is 39, the high usually being in the 60s, the average high in July is 94-95 with lows in the 70s. The Spring and Fall months are usually days in the 80s and nights in the 60s. This is why we have Sea World, and other tourism sites in the metropolitan area. There have been very few tornados in the city in the history of San Antonio, due to it's geographical setting. The city is far enough from the coast to avoid the worst effects of hurricanes but you can be on the beach in 2 1/2 hours. The rainfall amounts vary significantly by year and season. Last spring and this past summer was an exceedin ly wet year, and a few years ago we had water rationing. When we do get rain, however, it will frequently cause, flooding of the low areas. This does not normally affect any housing in the city, but is more significantly an affect on driving, as many roads run through low water crossings. If you do decide to move to the area (which I highly encourage you to do) never drive through water standing or running across a road (many lives have been lost in this area that way). Some people will complain that the area is hot. It is significantly cooler than most of the southern US, and only an average of 7 degrees hotter in the summer than Denver. Most of this past summer we were cooler everyday than New York.

As far as entertainment, there are numerous plays and concerts touring and local in the city. There are many clubs and just north of the city in the Hill Country you will find some intersting Dance Halls where many country-western music greats got their starts (like Willie Nelson and George Strait)
The city has a multitude of great restaurants, and world class shopping available. In the hill country you will find lakes and rivers which provide availability for boating, skiing, rafting, canoeing, and tubing. Also the area is home to one of the US' finest wine regions.

The best part about San Antonio, in many peoples opinion, is that while growing into a major city, it has retained a lot of small town charm, and has a unique identity. The special fiesta flavor provided by the Tex-Mex blend of the cty makes the area a special place to live or visit. As the city is growing rapidly, there are a lot of employment opportunities in several segments. The South Texas Medical Center, USAA, the San Antonio Military Complex, the tourism industries, many tech and banking companies, significant real estate development and construction, and Toyota are all major employers.

Hope you decide to move to SATX.

(I will at this point make the obligatory comment about the 4 time NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs, which most of us in San Antonio love, are another reason to move to the city. This is comment is made inorder to comply with all SA responses to why should I move to SA questions).

Welcome to San Antonio!!

Do I have to worry about ants any more?

James

Well, I live in Denver Colorado area, and for the past year i've been dealing with ants in my bedroom for the past year. I used to always use a TON of hot shot kitchen bug killer, but I don't think the issues over yet. I normally have 6 ants per day in the summer and now its limited to 2 or 3 a mouth. These ants are red and black medium sized red upper black butt. I think I just killed their queen today which had a very large butt and wings with pitchers. After this I made some remedy which was made of stain remover, yeast, rice vinegar, sugar, and syrup. My question is do you think that remedy will work and do you think the colony will die because of the one queen I killed and threw away somewhere a block away so they couldn't smell it? By the way my parents don't know about this so I got rid of my fish tanks because ants like humidity. IM only 14 and I NEED help!!!
PS I WANT THEM TO DIE AND BURN IN F U C K I N G HELL!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
The queen would not have been in your room, but never leaves the nest. That may have been a breeding male........they will get the wings at breeding season.......which is usually mid summer....so I am confused too. I assume you know the difference between ants and termites. Denver wasn't know for termites in my days there but I guess things can change.

Always better to use bait type pesticides that are taken back to the queen and fed to her. Most pesticides just kill the workers while they forage, they are easily and quickly replaced. Often better to treat outside around house perimeter with the bait stuff.....Amdro for example. Your homemade mixes may have no effect at all. One addition to your brews should be boric acid as found in Roach Pruf. Ants are sweet eaters or "meat" eaters. So mix boric acid in some peanutbutter for the "meat" and some jelly for the sweet. Put into a small jar with small holes in lid. Set where you think ants are coming in. They take the poison food back to the queen.

Ants should be tucked away for winter........if you are getting them during winter then you have an interior nest and problems.

My husband and I have an old oak bedroom set, still in pretty good condition, that we are wanting to sell in our neighborhood garage sale. It would be a dresser with a large mirror, a tall dresser (has some slight damage on the top in the back, it is difficult to see, the damage is above eye level) a night stand and a queen size bed frame. We have different ideas about what is a good price to ask for it. Any thoughts?

Answer
If it were perfect and rather new, I'd say about 40% of the original price. Since, it's not perfect, and I don't know the quality or brand name, how about 20% of the original price - cash, no delivery.

what is a good website to find bedroom collections/sets?

Q. I am right now 12, but i am using my cousins account. But anyways, i need a new bedroom set/collection because my twin sized bed isn't big enough for me. Where is a good website where i can find full/queen sized bed made out of wood. I have checked Macy's and i have found some pretty nice beds, but i want to compare. I don't care if they are cheap or expensive because the quality is what my mom wants for me.

Answer
ebay.com
havertys.com
ashleysfurniture.com
potterybarn.com
crateandbarrel.com

These are my personal favorites...but there are many, many more. Do a yahoo or google search for "bedroom suites" or bedroom suites in your area.

Good luck! (:

I live in Atlanta and I am going to be taking a 6-12 month contract in another state. I have a nice 3 bedroom home 2.5 bathroom home about 12 miles from downtown (in the suburbs) but it is not in an attraction area nor is it set up like a vacation home. I don't want my home to just sit idel for that long period of time and I don't want to sell it because I will be coming back to town once a month and at the end of the contract, I will be moving back in it. I am worried about renting it out for fear of someone tearing it up but I may have to do this. What shoudl I do with it? Should I try to rent it out weekly as a vacation home? Any other suggestions?

Answer
If money is not a problem with you, hire a caretaker for your home while you are gone. Somebody to check on it, clean it and make it ready for you to come home to. Install an alarm system before you go. Post the warnings. Stop all newspapers and mail. Get timers for the lamps. Tell the neighbors you will be gone. Good Luck!

How is it like living in a dorm?

SV650s

Is it better or worse than an apartment? What about the studying? I heard that some neighbors are noisy, and they have orgy everyday. What about the rent? Does the dorms are cheaper than apartments? Thank a lots in advance.

Answer
I lived in the dorms my first year of college. Dorm life can be lots of fun and lots of not so fun. I had a total of 4 roommates (our dormatories were giant 4 bedroom apartments... very nice... some colleges are not so lucky). The rent was basically $6000 for a whole year (ran from aug-july and included all utilities/cable/internet/washer/dryer... but no phone, most ppl just had cell phones). My college was in Atlanta and I loved being in the city. My roommates were pretty cool. We occasionally disagreed on air conditioning, cleaning, laundry, etc, but for the most part we all got along. My roommates did like to throw lots of parties (and you definitely have to be careful with alcohol on campus!) and it affected my grades (so be careful). To avoid fights over parties, utilities, etc. you definitely need to set grounds rules when everyone moves in. Find a common ground on air temp, laundry routines, study hours, food storage, etc. When we first movied in, our RA (resident assistant) made us all sign a contract that agreed us to our own set house rules. We all had to sign it and basically if a problem arose we would refer back to the rules. This may seem kinda silly, but it makes things official and gets things out in the open. For the most part, I liked living in the dorms. Its a good experience. You are really on your own and you learn to manage a house. It can be frustrating at times (especially when everyone was raised differently and do things differently), but its really awesome when you share classes with your roommates. My roommate and I shared American Gov class, but I never went to class (no attendance policy). It was great, I got the notes and assignments without going to class (made a B in the class).

I hope that was useful. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

How much would it cost to redo a teenage bedroom?

My bedroom wall color is a barn red. It doesnt match anything so my mom told me that i can redo my whole room. Im planning on getting new furniture if that helps.
P.S if anyone knows where i can find a zebra bed set please let me know.

Answer
Depending on exactly what you are doing, it should cost under $500 to redo your room.

Paint is inexpensive, but with a color like barn red, you are going to have to do a few coats to cover it.

A Zebra themed room is fun. It may be difficult to find a zebra bed set, but there is no reason why you can't have zebra accessories everywhere other than the bed. Find a solid bed set in a color you like (pink, turquoise, white) that will work well with your furniture. Add zebra print pillows all over the bed.

Your floor is a great place to really add that 'animal' style. Try this zebra print rug http://houseofarearugs.com/Nolita-1310-Black-And-White-p-216.html .

Finish up with smaller accessories, such as zebra printed candles and picture frames.

I'm buying new bedroom furniture, what kind of wood should I look for?

Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.
What about this furniture? Does it seem okay? http://www.mybobs.com/catalog/set_view.asp?packageid=585&room=bedroom

Answer
The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.
Hope this helps.

How can I get my nearly year old terrier mix housetrained?

This sweet spayed female won't learn to potty outside...I work nights and leave her in with my other terrier-who I think has reverted to a house mistake now and then too...I have to sleep days...can't leave them out because of neighbors. Don't expect them to hold it forever but the female always does her duty inside! I'm at my wits end with this little bundle of energy.

Answer
A puppy is like a baby. He will relieve himself anywhere, anytime. Because a newly adopted adult dog is unfamiliar with your home, he may not understand where he should "go"! Housetraining, or teaching your dog to go outside to relieve himself, is an important lesson your dog must learn.
It is up to you, the new parent, to housetrain your new puppy or dog with patience, love and understanding.
CRATE TRAINING
In the wild, wolves live in a den or cave. It is important the entire wolf pack keep this area clean. The same idea works with your family pet. Your dog’s crate is his home, his bedroom. It is likely that your dog will not like to soil his bed. Therefore, he will wait until he is let out to do his business.
HOUSETRAINING WITH YOUR CRATE
On average, puppies can hold their bladders one hour for every month they have been alive, plus one hour. For example, if you have a three month old puppy, he can wait 3 + 1 = 4 hours. If you work longer than this, the best solution is to have someone (a neighbour, a relative, a dog walker) come in at an appropriate time to let your dog out.

100 PER CENT SUPERVISION
Supervision is the key to housetraining! While you are at home, your dog must be supervised. Whether you are watching television, making dinner, on the phone or on the computer, your puppy must be watched. While it sounds like an impossible task, it isn’t. Keeping the crate in a social part of the house makes it easier. Using a house lead – a small, thin lead with a little clip on it – also helps immensely. Outside, you put a lead on your dog so you can control him. If the lead is removed after returning home, control is lost. For example, when watching television, have the lead tied to a couch leg. Your dog can have his blanket and toys with him. He’ll feel safe and comfortable. The majority of accidents happen when your pup wanders off and you haven’t noticed. You don’t want him to sneak off into the kitchen and find a puddle a short time later. If your pup is kept from wandering, the possibility of an accident is diminished because he will not eliminate where he is sitting. 100 per cent supervision means ensuring your dog is playing with you, in his crate, outside or on his house lead.

SCHEDULING
In the morning, take your dog outside. He should urinate and possibly have a bowel movement. Spend about five to seven minutes with him and then bring him in. Do not play with him yet. Feed him breakfast, either in the crate or with the lead, and supervise it. If your pup did not have a bowel movement earlier, take him back outside about 15 minutes after he has eaten. Use the lead to keep your pup moving along while outside. Otherwise, he may start sniffing, stopping and playing to avoid the job at hand. You can say “hurry up” and your dog will begin to associate these words with the task at hand. Praise him excessively when he has eliminated. Bring him back in the house and place him in his crate if you are going to work. Continue to supervise him with the crate or the lead if you are home. When returning after being out, go directly to the crate, let him out, praise him and put him back in. Feed him his meal, take him outside 15 minutes after he has eaten, praise him after he eliminates, and bring him back in. Continue to follow the same steps consistently.

While you are home, you should take your pup outside on a regular basis. Even if your pup is in a crate or on a house lead, he still needs the opportunity to eliminate. Also, be careful what you wish for! A pup who barks to go outside may be cute and clever now. However, you must try not to fall into the habit of leaping up every time your dog wants in or out. It is a very submissive gesture on your part. Have your pup wait a moment or two.

Setting up a schedule is also a good idea. If your pup is under four months of age, take him out for five minutes every hour on the hour. If your pup is over four months old, take him out every second hour on the hour. The schedule will help you remember when to take him out. Go out for five minutes only. It provides the opportunity to eliminate even if your pup may not need to go. Take your dog out after active play and also after napping. If an accident occurs, you may have forgotten to take him out .

FEEDING TIME
Having a puppy drink a lot of water and then placing him in his crate is much more unkind than letting him be a bit thirsty for an hour or two. Adult dogs should have access to drinking water at all times. However, this is not the case for untrained pups. Most parents will not allow their children to drink a big glass of water before going to bed. Avoid setting your pup up for failure. Restrict his water intake to three or four drinks daily and make sure you remove the water dish about three hours before bedtime. This will help your dog sleep more comfortably.

If it is a hot evening, supply your pup with a few ice cubes. They will enter your dog’s system at a slower pace. When feeding your pup, provide a high-quality food that is a good source of protein. The food must be concentrated so your puppy’s body doesn’t require much of it. If you feed less, your puppy eliminates less. Food is directly related to how well puppies do in their housetraining.

EXERCISE
It is important that your pup gets a lot of exercise, especially while crate training. You can play fetch, chase or hide and seek in your home. You can call ‘come’ at the same time to provide further training. Anyway you do it, your pup needs to be able to run and play.

Please help with small surround sound options for bedroom?

Neil B

Is there a high quality, but small size surround sound for bedroom that is wireless? I don't know how to set it up, and don't want wires everywhere.
We won't need something that is too loud (watts). Looking for small size, but killer sound experience.
Easy set up, good cost/possible Blue Ray bundle, wireless.
Thank you for your time. Cheers!

Answer
For small speakers. I suggest the KEF1005.1 series(ebay you can get them for a good price). Rocketfish makes a wireless kit you can get at best buy for a decent price.

Throw in a ps3 for the blu-ray and you are set.

grab a decent 5.1 receiver Panasonic, Denon, Yamaha off ebay.

How much on average does it cost an individual to move into an apartment?

I.G. from

I want to move into a one bedroom apt and I want to kno the average a person would spend. Include decorating the apt as well

Answer
Well, some places you have to pay first and last and security - so lets just say your rent is 700 - that is 2100 right there.

Depending on how much you want your place to look nice... when I was looking around for bedroom sets and living room furniture, etc... it cost around $4000 to furnish the entire place. It was $1000 for the living room (two sofas, end tables, lamps, coffee table) $1500 for the bedroom (bed, dresser, night stand, mattress) Then the kitchen set which was a little over $100. Then you have the TV, entertainment center, any extra lamps and dishes, towels, vaccum, etc - will add up to close to 6100 all together. Give or take.

About how much would it cost to rent an unfurnished 2 bedroom apartment in Moscow?

isabella

This is for long term rent obviously. I would prefer it closer to the city center and if anyone could also tell me how much a 1 bedroom would be that would be good too.

Answer
A two bed is classed as a three room apartment and when you see the prices, you might consider a studio (1 room) or 1 bed (2 room) instead.

Rents have dropped a little since the exodus of expats over the last couple of years, but a renovated shoebox will still set you back $1500 a month. I personally like Tsvetnoy Boulevard Area, but could never afford to live there.

What are your Christmas Eve and Christmas traditions?

Meg

In my family we either go to my house or my aunt's and uncle's. It's only my mom's side of the family. We take turns doing it. This year it will be my house. They're aren't that many kids. It's only me, my cousin CJ(14), and my cousin Leo(13). My dad always sets up a train about a week ot two before. This train is really cool. He puts it on this huge table. Then we put a ton of little buildings and houses on. There's a fire station with fire men and fire trucks and there's a grocery store and many more. They're all old. There's little people that can ride it the train cars. There's a lot of different train cars each with sliding doors for the tiny people to get it. The train goes around the little "city" on it's train tracks. It can even go backwards. Ever since we were little my cousins and I always play with the train on Christmas eve. My mom sets out bowls of M&Ms, Hershey kisses, and mixed nuts in little Christmas dishes. My dad and I always try to eat them before the guests arrive and my mom would yell at us. My mom lights Christmas scented Yankee candles and we turn on Christmas music. When all the adults arrive they sit and talk in the living room. My cousins and I either hang it the family room or go to my room and turn on the Christmas music and dance around(yeah, we only did that when we were younger). My mom usually serves ham for dinner. The adults sit in the dining room and my cousins and I sit at the kitchen table and talk. We used to talk about how excited we were for Santa, and if we would see his sleigh in the sky. Now it's just what we want for Christmas. After dinner my aunts help my mom clean up while we beg for presents. When we were younger we used to ask every 10 seconds. When it's time for presents, me and my cousins go first. We only open presents from our aunts and uncles, and our grandma. Then the adults do this gift thingy where each person brings a $20 unisex gift and the youngest adult picks a gift first. Each gift is wrapped. When they chose their gift they unwrap it. The next person picks their gift and they can take another person's gift if they want to. It goes on and my cousins and I get bored so we go in the other room and talk. When we were younger we used to put the Santa tracker on. We'd have it on the TV and the computer and always wonder why it showed him in different places(now we look back on that and laugh). Then all of us gather around the tree and sing a Christmas carol and enjoy the time we have as a family. Then my cousins and I watch a Christmas movie in the family room. We say our good-byes and thank-yous and hug many times. After everyone gone I used to sprinkle reindeer food outside on the ground. We got the recipe offline. It was made out of oats, sugar, Christmas sprinkles, and glitter so they could see it. I used to love to do that. I come inside and hug my parents and say goodnight. Then my parents would tuck me in and close my door. Now I stay up a little later watching Christmas movies. Then I say goodnight and I love you to my parents and go to bed.

I usually wake up at 7:00. I stay in my room and look at my stocking that my parents filled me. I keep my stocking at the side of my bed because we don't have a fireplace. I take each item out one by one and look at each. Then at 7:30 I wake my parents up with a "Merry Christmas!". I've done that every year since I was little. When I was younger my parents when downstairs first while I sit at the top step. I can't see the presents from there. My parents would ooh and aah over what "Santa" got me because he never wrapped it. Then they took what seemed like forever to make their coffee and get the camera. I'd come down the stairs and scream while my parents took pictures and smiled. Now I come down the stairs with them and open my presents. My parents open their stockings that they filled for each other. My half-brother and half-sister come over(half siblings are not step sibs, they're my dads children from his last marriage) at 11:00am. They're in their twenties so I don't see them that much. They open their presents and say thank you. We hang out and I mess around with my presents while my parents open theirs. We have Christmas music on the whole day. We pretty much stay in our PJ's the whole day and just relax and hang out with our family. We play Wii and I try to beat my brother. Last year my sister got a magnetic Jets dart board so we were trying to beat each other in darts. We skip lunch and have a big dinner. My mom makes turkey. I'm picky so I just eat the turkey, corn, and Pillsbury crescent rolls. An hour later we have dessert. Dessert is usually pie and ice cream, and Christmas cookies. My brother and sister leave and we just chill.

Thats how my family celebrates Christmas. How does yours?
(It doesn't need to be as detailed)

Answer
Ooohhh, I love these questions! :) Seeing as how I really enjoyed reading all about your's, as the detail you went into shows how much you like it, I'll do the same, then we can both be stupidly excited! :) I'm feeling festive at the moment because in the village I live all the decorations are slowly going up, and I've been getting mine ready :)
On Christmas Eve, I normally wake up earlier than usual, simply because I'm excited about all the excitement! :) I spend the first few hours of the day wandering, walking outside in the mist and cold, and watching Christmas TV shows and movies (Usually the Polar Express or The Santa Clause :) ), and generally not knowing what to do with myself! Then after lunch I go up to my bedroom, where I turn on Christmas music and start to tidy it and clean in (I know that sounds wierd lol, but it keeps me occupied, and it's kind of relaxing, nice and warm inside, with Jingle Bells playing!). I always go overboard with the decorations in my room, I like it to be perfect for the night (about the only time in the year when it's actually clean lol...).
At 5pm or 6pm is when the fun bit starts. Every year I can remember, at 5-6pm we, as a family, have left to go on the long drive to visit friends and relatives. It's really exciting, and the drive time is actually really fun because you get to see so many decorations.
First, we visit my grand-parents. I barely see them, so it's really nice on Christmas Eve to visit them sit in their house for about an hour drinking Coke and watching the clock out of the corner of my eye. It's just the atmosphere, y'know? Just sitting there, in the warm, with the TV on in the corner of your eye, waiting among the decorations.... There's nothing particularly fun about it, it's just the excitement slowly building up that makes it so fun :)
Secondly, we go to my aunt's house. She is the one relative I see often, but it's always nice to see her on Christmas Eve. Normally, my brother and I get dragged upstairs by our cousin to play with his train set or try to spot Santa through his bedroom window. She always stuffs our faces with chocolate and Lemonade lol, and I love sitting with my Uncle watching old Doctor Who episodes, as has become our little tradition at Christmas lol. At about 7, we leave her house, and go to our final stop.
We visit my god-mother and her husband, Mik. I only see them at this time every year, so it always feels so Christmasy just seeing their house, let alone seeing all the decorations Mik goes overboard in putting up. They always give us drinks and mince-pies, and for some reason they always have Shreck on TV lol, but it's all become part of the atmosphere.
Mik is a gardener and a technichian, and, the best part about this is that... he can actually build snow machines! On Christmas Eve he always has the garden covered in about a foot of snow, soon after arriving he always takes me and my brother outside for a buge snowball fight and snowman building :)
Afterwards we go back in to warm up, this being about 9pm, and this is the best part of Chirstmas Eve for me, sitting watching Shreck the Halls, eating chocolate and drinking Coke, in front of a warm fire, knowing soon we're going to have to go because it'll be time to go to bed for Christmas!
We leave their house at about 9pm - 9:30, and the drive back is always really exictable for me and my brother. If it's open, we have a McDonald's for dinner, but if it's not my mum cooks toasties when we get home. Me and my brother both have a quick bath, new PJs, and in bed for 11pm. I love this bit, because the exictement is unbearable, and my room looks amasing lit up with all the decorations. Really cosy, and it's nice to have a clean room for once lol :)
Always have trouble getting to sleep lol...
I normally wake up about 8 in the morning, I'd get up earlier but I'm usually so tired from last night. I love seeing my stocking hanging on my bed, full to bursting! When my brother wakes up we take our stockings into our parents room to open, normally full of little things, like chocolate and key-chains etc. After that the real fun starts when we go downstairs and open the presents under the tree! I love going into the living room to see them just sitting there, piles of them! Normally takes a few hours for them all to be opened, then the rest of the day is spend watching TV and using the Christmas haul! I always save a few for Boxing Day just to prolong the excitement though...

I'm 16 and I still don't tire of that routine lol, and I'll probably keep doing it, going back to my parents' every Christmas until I'm 25 and have my own family! The best part of Christams for me is the rounds of Chistmas Eve, they're not as fun as Christmas Day, but the excitement is brilliant! :)
