Any Tips on moving to Los Angeles?

Nicholas J

I am 20 years old and live in Sandusky (from movie Tommy Boy) Ohio. I went to the University of Toledo last year, but moved home this year to save money to move to LA. I, don't however, live with my parents. I live in a house in Sandusky with 4 room mates. To save time, I already know how expensive it is there. Through online calculations, I need to make $36,000 a year to live my current $20,000 lifestyle. I am looking for 1 bedroom apartment for about 1250 a month in a good neighborhood. I have a decent, small car that should be able to get me around for a few years. I know about traffic, the fake people, the scams and the crime rates. I have a small understanding of the different neighborhoods. I have already researched apartments and I am going to take a short-term lease at first to get an idea on more of my budget. I have no problem putting in 60 hours a week to afford to live. Please, don't answer with "don't go to LA". It is already set in stone. I am a guy. Thanks.

Answer
Do it dude. Come on down. Rent is expensive here, but if you plan on working a couple of jobs, you should be okay. You can find a pretty decent 1br apt. for 1250/month. I recommend you look into Los Feliz Village, Eagle Rock, Glendale, and Atwater Village. Those places are all pretty decent and located about 20 minutes from just about everything in L.A. Sandusky, awesome dude. I loved Tommy Boy. hehe. L.A. is not as bad as people make it seem. I've lived here my whole life and I've never been robbed, shot at, beaten or antything. I don't even live in the best neighborhoods. Good luck!

I'm moving to Los Angeles in 2 weeks for a new job. I'm going to rent. Which neighbourhood is good?

Allan

I'm going to work in Westwood area near UCLA. I prefer to live in a safe neighbourhood. Hopefully the rent is not too $$$. I don't mind driving to work or taking public transportation.

Answer
Hi Allan - I work at UCLA so I know the area quite well. Westwood itself is a nice area to live in but it's very busy and very expensive. The neighborhoods to the north are Beverly Glen, Brentwood, Bel Air etc and you would have to be a multi-millionaire to live there. More affordable would be West Hollywood (lots of gay guys so that would have to not bother you), Mid-Wilshire area (but not Korea Town), the west side is an okay place to live as well like Santa Monica, the Palisades, Venice all very expensive. It's hard to help you out when I don't know your budget constraints but I believe as long as you have about $2,000 a month for rent (one bedroom) you will be fine.

Please keep in mind that LA does not have much in terms of public transportation so you'd likely be driving. Even a few miles will take a long time in a car. If you are really set on public transportation then the transportation system in Westwood is probably the best since it has a lot of UCLA college students rather than the usual transients and crazy people. Street driving in LA is awful regardless of what time of day you are doing it.

No areas of the inner city are really "safe" unless you want to pay big bucks to live in Bel Air or some patrolled area like that. If you want more of a commute there ARE safe areas outside of LA but you'd be looking at about an hour commute.

If you want more information from LA locals on a relocation message board check out www.city-data.com and their forums:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/los-angeles/
On the website (it's free by the way) you can get all the local info and basics like weather, population demographics and then on the forum you can ask the locals about commuting time, neighborhoods, safety, schools, jobs etc. "Fastfilm" on the Los Angeles forum is the resident expert.

Please make sure that before coming to Los Angeles that your job will be paying enough for you to live a comfortable life in LA otherwise you will likely be miserable with the overpopulation, traffic and polluted air. By comfortably, I mean you would need a yearly income of about $110,000 preferably more than that especially if you want to live in a safe area. Good luck!

Good bedroom furniture?

Lainey

I just signed an apartment lease and I'm moving in. Cool, but I have more than enough storage for everything I need so my bedroom looks like it's just going to have a bed in it.

I don't want to look like I couldn't afford furniture, but since all my clothes fit in my closet (as do my shoes, and coats, and extra blankets), I don't need a dresser. I don't need a vanity, and I don't need a shelving unit, chest of drawers, or desk (that's in my living room)

I'm low maintenance, so I don't want loads of furniture for decoration, but since I want my bed in the corner, my room is gonna look...sad. I have enough seating in my living room, and that's nice and cosy, so adding a seating are in my room seems pointless (no TV in the bedroom is my rule).

What's a girl to do? What would you put in an underfurnished bedroom?
My bedroom is 13 x 12 ft, if it helps...

Answer
You basically will have a Zen bedroom.
For it to not feel so empty try putting a 5 x 8 rug at the end of the bed anchored by the legs of the bed. Then put a bench seat at the end of the bed on top of the rug. It does come in handy for a place to sit to put on socks and shoes.

What about a night stand next to the bed with a lamp on it?

Another idea is to put a sofa table across the room with decor or symbolic things on it of places you want to visit, things you find beautiful to look at, that have some meaning to you. These are things that may be the first thing you look at when you wake up. It's a nice way to start the morning, seeing something pleasing to the eye. It doesn't have to be cluttered looking just well placed.

What about a few plants. Either free standing in large pots or get plant stands to put them on. Greenery is nice in a room.

Bedroom Ideas??!?!?!!?

Q. Ok, I need new ideas. I will be a teenager in a year so I need a new bedroom.

Okay, i wanna keep my walls. I have four walls, colors: pink, orange, green, yellow (all neon)

I will keep my bed and maybe keep my sheets. My bed is a queen and my sheets are zebra... idk if i like them still.

I need to get new furniture. Any good stores? I wanna get fun furniture as in maybe like a bean bag chair or something fun. My room is kinda small so i can fit in my room a bookcase (medium), a drawer (small medium) a chair (dont have it yet) and my bed (queen) so i would love to put more furniture i still have maybe a 6 by 6 or 5 by 5 space i can put furniture in.

Please, no zebra, cheetah, or animal prints. No baby stuff. Just fun furniture stores please. Any ideas?

P.S. If you wanna go in detail please email me at selenagsexwithjb@gmail.com

THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!!! - Jamie
P.S. THE EMAIL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING!!!! IT WAS MY OLDER SISTERS EMAIL!!! SHE IS REALLY WIERD!!!!!!

Answer
well i'm not sure what your budget is but i think a pink ottoman like this one well go nicely with your room since it serves as a small chair and storage unit.

also you can keep your walls bare or have beautiful decals on them, i find many on e-bay but you can look elsewhere. here are some of my favorites:

How to get rid of musty smell in old house?

Kimberly

Does anyone have any suggestions how to get rid of musty smells in an old house? The house is 1950's ish and I smelll it everytime I come in my house.

I've tried baking soda on my carpets and aerosol sprays. I haven't tried candles too much. My windows are open during the summer months for ventalation but closed during the winter months. I realize I have to do something on a regular basis, which is fine, but would love to hear of someone who finds something that long-lasting and really works.

Any suggestions? We do have 2 cats and 1 small dog.

Answer
Well a good place to start would be hire a carpet washer and clean all of your carpets, then you should wash all of - or as many as possible- your soft furnishings e.g curtains , bedding and cushion covers. You should try to open your windows throughout the day - in the winter time its fine to have them open only a little for a couple of hours. In my house i like to use plug in air fresheners and scented candles as well as melting wax tarts , my favorite brand in home fragrance is yankee candle but you could try any brand. As for the pets the best thing you can do is bath your dog often and with your cats you can buy dry shampoo which is just like powder that you brush through their coats although cats tend not to smell too bad. the problem with aerosol sprays is the smell fades away very quickly so for that long lasting fragrance plug in air fresheners are best. You could try ambi pur plug ins or the ones by yankee candle and if you just buy a few of them - maybe one in your lounge ,hallway, dining room , bedroom - and put them on a low setting you'll have constant fragrance that isn't sickly or over powering

The Innocent Man by John Grisham?

Bob S

i read the book a while back and about to do a project on it and i am a little fuzzy on all the details so if you could please help me out a bit all answers appreciated and 10 pts for best.

Answer
I got this from Wikipedia -

The story begins with Ron Williamson, who has returned to his hometown after failed attempts at playing for various minor league baseball teams, including the Oakland A's and the Ft. Lauderdale Yankees. This failure leads to a bout of depression, which results in a drinking problem.

Very early in the morning of December 8, 1982, the body of Debra Sue Carter, a 21-year-old cocktail waitress at the Coachlight Club (located in Ada), and a resident of Ada, was found in the bedroom of her garage apartment. She had been beaten, raped and suffocated. After five years of false starts and shoddy police work by the Ada police, Williamsonâalong with his "drinking buddy", Dennis Fritzâwas charged, tried and convicted of the rape and murder charges in 1987-1988. Williamson was sentenced to death. Fritz, meanwhile, was given a life sentence. Fritz's own wife had been murdered seven years earlier in 1975 and he was raising his only daughter when arrested.

Grisham's book describes the aggressive and misguided mission of the Ada police to solve Carter's murder mystery. Forced dream confessions, unreliable witnesses and flimsy evidence were used to convict Williamson and Fritz. Since a death row conviction automatically sets in motion a series of appeals, a fresh look into the details of the trial, especially by the Innocence Project and Williamson's attorney, Mark Barrett, exposed several glaring lacunae in the prosecution's case and the credibility of the prosecution's witnesses. Brady v. Maryland, a case that had been ignored until after the sentencing, was acknowledged. A retrial was ordered by Frank H. Seay, a U.S. District Court judge. After suffering through a conviction and 11 years on death row, Williamson and Fritz were finally exonerated by DNA evidence, and released on April 15, 1999. (At the time, Williamson became the 80th inmate exonerated from Death Row since 1973.[2])

Ron Williamson suffered deep and irreversible psychological scars during his incarceration and eventual wait on death row. (At one time on September 19, 1994, he was only five days away from being executed when the execution was stayed by the court.[3][4]) He was intermittently treated for manic depression, personality disorders, alcoholism and mild schizophrenia. It was later proven that he was indeed mentally ill (and hence unfit to be either tried or placed on death row in the first place). The State of Oklahoma and Ada and Pontotoc County officials never admitted any errors, even threatening to re-arrest him, though they did settle a wrongful-conviction case brought as a result of Williamson's incarceration.

Another criminal from Ada, Glen Gore, was eventually convicted of the original crime on June 24, 2003, and was sentenced to death at first, [4] but his death sentence was overturned in August 2005;[5] he was eventually convicted at his second trial in June 2006 and sentenced to life in prison without parole.[6][7]

Williamson and Fritz sued and won a large settlement ($500,000.00) in 2003 from the City of Ada, and an out of court settlement with the State of Oklahoma for an undisclosed amount. By 2004, Williamson was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, and died soon thereafter on December 4, 2004 in a Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, nursing home. Dennis Fritz, meanwhile, returned to Kansas City, where he lives with his daughter, Elizabeth as of 2006[update]. In 2006, Fritz went on to publish his own account of being wrongly convicted in his book titled Journey toward Justice, ISBN 1-931643-95-4.

The story also includes accounts (as sub plots) of the false conviction, trial and sentencing of Tommy Ward and Karl Fontenot in the abduction and purported murder of Denice Haraway, as well as the false conviction of Greg Wilhoit in the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kathy. All the men were, at one point of time, incarcerated in the same death row. About two decades before Grisham's book, Ward and Fontenot's wrongful convictions were detailed in a book published in 1987 called The Dreams of Ada by Robert Mayer.

Cost of brick wall in bedroom?! (pic included)?

Q. Hey I saw this while I was looking for a bedroom set and I am obsessed.
http://www.pbteen.com/products/guys-beadboard-storage-bed-and-medium-tower-set/popup/more-views.html?active=1

The brick wall is just awesome and I was wondering about how much would it cost to have that done but more so how much effort would it take to find someone to do it or worst case do it yourself?
Thanks

Answer
The cost of the required number of sheets of "brick" paneling, and the labor to put them up, which a handyperson could do

Are The Brick prices negotiable?

kane

I was looking at the prices of bedroom furniture. Mainly this one

http://www1.thebrick.com/brickb2c/jsp/catalog/product.jsp?id=453QPK6&navAction=jump&navCount=3

It costs 1700 CDN and I'm wondering if they go cheaper. I don't really want the set, I want to choose my items. Bed/ Chest/ 2 Night Tables.... But I don't want to pay regular price or even package price lol. There furniture is 35% the ticket price when purchased with a set. I'm wondering if I can get that price for all items plus maybe more?

CAN I DO IT? I think I can but, I don't know.

Answer
The Brick in Canada will price match/beat Sears. They might beat another store's price if you can get a print out of another's price and show them. Ask them to give you a better price. Many will lower prices if asked because they know they are creating a return customer.

How can I find out the value of my vintage "American of Martinsville" bedroom set?

Dre

The set includes 2 night stands, a dresser, and a tall dresser-like unit that stands taller than a traditional dresser. Looks like cherry wood on the top with painted white base/drawers. Says "American of Martinsville" on the inside of the drawers.

Answer
One way to determine a value is to see what others are attempting to get for theirs.
Check here for starters.

Vintage bedroom ideas?

holyfrick

I'm redoing my room, and would like a vintage/victorian type feel to it.

What color comforter and walls should I paintmy room if I plan on getting this bedroom set?

http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/KeywordSearch?storeId=10151&sLevel=0&keyword=country+living+antique+wood&vName=For+the+Home&catalogId=10104

Thanks! :)

Answer
The furniture does look like cottage furniture which you can still give it a Cottage Victorian look. You could paint your walls most any pastel shade. A light green would be nice and also calming for a bedroom. Add white lace curtains for that Victorian look or semi-sheers if you want it to look more like the cottage look. You could also mix the the lace with the sheers. I would use a floral comforter, preferably one with big roses. Use lots of roses in your room in vases and pictures. Choose lamps with fringe or beads on the shades. An over stuffed chair or settee in the room would look nice also if you have the room. Lots of pillows, a silver tea set on a bed tray, old books, gloves, hats, pearls, cameos, a collection of shells, will all look Vintage/Victorian, along with some black and white photos to put in older frames. Look in antique shops for some of your treasures.

Good luck and happy hunting. :)

leopard print or zebra print bedroom? Or keep it as it is?

Beachbum

I am 16 years old and I have the choice to redecorate my room. I am an allstar cheerleader but I also love surfing, snowboarding, wake boarding ETC. Im not real girly but im not a tomboy.

As of now my room is fun colors with a beachy vibe to it and I do like it but it is getting old cause I have had it for sssoo long. I really love animal print and I wanted at first to make it leopard print but i stared seeing some really cut zebra print stuff. I would only have my duvet or comforter be the animal print and my windows be a color. My walls are white and i do have a light blue rug in my room now and i dont know how that would look with leopard print. Please tell me what you think and ideas! Thanks
I forgot to mention i have white shelves on my walls.

How do I go around getting apartment help?

Silverado

Alright my question is simple I'm 20and don't knw how to go around getting apt. What are the basics is it proper to just call the main office or can I set up appointment.I don't have time for bullshit but I'm sure I'll get it on a silver tray .I don't have. Credit and no co sighner and since I don't have that they will want some cash I do have money."But" I'm only willing to put at least 2 grand.Thats it Im starting a Plc business and got limits!.so what do you guys think I knw my options are slim but give me something.the rent that I'm saying is around 1g a month or if I want more 1500 two bedroom.im in el paso Texas.

Answer
Since you have no credit and no cosigner, you need to avoid large complexes with professional management company. They have a fiduciary obligation to the owner(s), and must check your credit report in addition to employment verification, references, etc. Apparently, you do not yet have any landlord references to prove you pay rent on time and keep your place tidy? Then deal directly with landlords of small buildings, basement apartments, in-law apartments, and the like. You will need to prove you earn at least 3 times the rent, although if you are not earning at least 4 times rent, you will end up in financial hot water very quickly. So for a $1500 apt, you need to prove you earn over $4500/month, and need to earn over $6000/month to really afford it.

You also need good character references from respected adults. Beware any attitude. Dealing with landlords, they have to like you, and they will select someone prepared with their documentation, professional appearance, and personable mien.

can anyone figure this out?

SF23

helen and her three roommates live in a two-bedroom apartment at the University of Texas at El Paso. Each has a different major(one woman is majoring in chemistry.) Coincidentally, each woman has a different hair color (one is blonde.) Determine each woman's full name, hair color and major.
1. Joan, who isn't Ms. Bonds doesn't have either of the two darker hair colors, and neither does Irene.
2. Glory, doesnt share a room with Ms. Carlson or the accounting major
3. Glory's major isnt physics
The physics major has brown hair
Ms. Daniels's hair is neither red nor black
Ms. Bonds, whose first name is not glory, is majoring in English
Ms Alder and Helen are both majoring in a science and often take classes together

Answer
Set up a grid like this and eliminate options as you discover facts.

Helen - (Chemistry, Physics, English, Accounting) - (Blonde, Brown, Red, Black) -( Bonds, Alder, Daniels, Carlson)
Joan - (Chemistry, Physics, English, Accounting) - (Blonde, Brown, Red, Black) -( Bonds, Alder, Daniels, Carlson)
Glory - (Chemistry, Physics, English, Accounting) - (Blonde, Brown, Red, Black) -( Bonds, Alder, Daniels, Carlson)
Irene - (Chemistry, Physics, English, Accounting) - (Blonde, Brown, Red, Black) -( Bonds, Alder, Daniels, Carlson)

Clue 1. Joan not Bonds, not brown or black hair. Irene not brown or black. This means that Joan and Irene are blonde and red and Helen and Glory are black and brown. Delete these options accordingly.
Clue 3. Glory not physics
Clue 4 the physics major has brown hair. Helen and Glory have bown hair. As we know that the physics major is not Glory it has to be HELEN. This means also that Helen has brown hair and therefore GLORY has black hair.
Clue 5. Daniels does not have Black hair and is therefore not Glory
Clue 6 Bonds is not Glory, also as Bonds is majoring in English and Helen is majoring in Physics, Helen is not Bonds. After deleting these options it means the only female that can be BONDS is IRENE. (Bonds has been deleted from all the others). This means that IRENE is taking ENGLISH
Clue 7 Alder and Helen, ie Helen is not ALDER
The grid now looks like this.

Helen - (Physics) - (Brown) -(Daniels, Carlson)
Joan - (Chemistry, Accounting) - (Blonde, Red,) -( Alder, Daniels, Carlson)
Glory - (Chemistry,Accounting) - (Black) -( Alder,Carlson)
Irene - (English) - (Blonde, Red) -(Bonds)

Clue 2. I interpret this to mean that Glory cannot be Miss Carlson or the accounting major and Miss Carlson cannot be the accounting major.. In which case she is Ms Alder and as Ms Alder takes a science subject, this means that Glory takes CHEMISTRY. In a process of elimination this means that JOAN takes ACCOUNTING.
As Miss Carlson cannot be the Accountancy major (Joan), it means that Joan is DANIELS and HELEN is CARLSON
Clue 5 Daniels (JOAN) hair is not RED, therefore Joan has blonde hair, which means that Irene as last option has RED hair

Final Solution

Helen - (Physics) - (Brown) -(Carlson)
Joan - (Accounting) - (Blonde) -(Daniels)
Glory - (Chemistry) - (Black) -(Alder)

Which are the best brands of furniture- particularly bedroom furniture?

Brianne H

Hi, I'm trying to find out what some of the best brands of furniture are. Would you say Ethan Allen, Broyhill, and Pottery Barn? Or would you recommend something else. I'm looking into getting a new bedroom set and I want to know what the top brands are (as far as name recognition, brand appeal, quality, etc.). I'd appreciate any helpful responses you can give me. Thanks a bunch.

Answer
I worked for Ethan Allen, about 4 years ago.....They have always had the best furniture.....For generations, all of their furniture was made in the USA, until recently, most of it is still made in US, some however is being imported from China.....I still think EA is the best and its an investment, just make sure you will love this furniture, because you will have to live with it for a while....Best of luck....

How do I sand my Ethan Allen furniture to a natural finish?

Mnb T

I have a nice Ethan Allen bedroom set from the 1970s that it is in excellent condition (structurally), but the finish on the furniture is scuffed up, dull, and just way too dark for my taste. What is the easiest process for sanding this down to a natural finish?

Answer
I use Strypeeze to remove majority of finish. It removes every kind of finish I ever used it own. Then I sand the small spots it didn't quite get. Most manufactured furniture uses very thin veneer wood on top of secondary wood so a sanding mistake can severely damage a piece of furniture. I use a random orbit sander and fine grain paper. Takes most of the work out of it too.

How much is a 35 year old french provincial bedroom set worth?

Melissa

Answer
real French provencial is 200 years old, 35 years old would be from the late 70s & not much of anything from that decade is worth any value.

If you can find a manufacturer's label on the pieces and identify it online you may be able to price it
