buying furniture for the first time?

love567

ok im buying furniture for my new apartment but im kinda on a budget so im going to value city furniture store and the sofa and loveseat set that i want cost 600 dollars so i was wondering did anyone know if 300 dollars would be enough to put down in order to bring the furniture home and then be put on a payment plan

Answer
personally, i would REALLY recommend checking out craigslist first - you really can get awesome stuff - just bought an ashley bedroom set that retails for 1800 for 500 because someone was moving and it didn't fit in the new place...

but i would say that the deposit they're going to require varies - sometimes they don't require anything down. but if you're getting a $600 set, $300 down would be a 50% deposit and you should be fine.

-all i need is the furniture i listed above

Answer
You're a very adventurous 13 year old. Well done.
Have you tried ebay for your furniture. Many merchants have furniture packages where shipping is included in the price so you will have no surprises when it comes to the price.

Maybe if you do a search in the country where you live for the term "black trundle twin bedroom set" and see what it returns. If that doesn't return any answers then try "black bedroom furniture" or use the word "dark bedroom furniture" and see what these return. You may find something second hand that suits.

I'm not sure of the ebay rules, you may need to be 18 to purchase online, so just in case, get your parents involved or a friend over 18.

Buying online can save you heaps of money and you may come in well under budget.
Good Luck

Hey much should sell my bedroom set for?

Q. I had it for little under 4 years, I bought it for around 2,500.
Bed- Headboard, Footboard, mattress
Dresser- Has 4 drows, very deep.
Nightstand- Two drows

All of these is very classy and is white. I don't know what type of wood but it is very strong.

Anyway, I'm trying to sell this and get enough money from it to by another bedset.

What is a reasonaly price for all of this?

Answer
Typically, I don't think bedroom furniture has a high resale value...that is to say, it doesn't sell "used" for nearly as much as you purchased it. I sold my white painted wood bedroom set (bed, desk, bedside, dresser) for $500 or so, but I was trying to get rid of it fast. Go on craigslist and see what others are going for. Always set the price high and let people negotiate down from there. Good Luck!

Which bedding looks better with this set of furniture?

Q. http://www.pier1.com/collections/bedroom-collections/shanghai,default,sc.html

I like the simplicity of this one, but feel like it might be too dull, and wouldn't match with the gold.

I like this one, but feel it may take away from the furniture set...

Which looks better with the set?
Also, this black and gold one:

Answer
Hi - you have got some really nice furniture and it is nice to show the furniture to it's best advantage and if it was me I would choose your first bedding you have given the link for i.e.

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-c26270/home-classics-canyon-7-pc-comforter-set.jsp

This is a beautiful comforter set you have chosen and works very well with your bed - it doesn't compete with furniture - the other two comforter sets you gave us links for - do. Also this one has a very 'calming' effect which is good for you when you are in your bedroom.

So, defo go with this one :)

I will give you a little tip - and that is I would perhaps bring another colour into your room just for a little 'pop' of colour - and that would be - a red cushion on your bed and a red lampshade or a piece of red artwork in your room - you will need at least two pieces of red in something - hence why I'm saying a cushion and lampshade and'or a piece of art with red in it.

For your piece of art - you could do it yourself and buy a blank artist canvas or 3 or 4 if you like and make a statement on your wall by 'grouping' them together on one wall or just have one large one above your bed - it is up to you but just an idea. Buy some remnants of fabric, but as I say make sure the fabric has the colours of your bedding plus red. Get enough fabric to go around the canvas for it also go around the back and just staple the fabric at the back. Have a look here to give you an idea of how yours could look with the fabrics suggested above:)

Anyway hope the above helps :)

What color duvet set should i get to make room look more grown up?

jbara79

I am tring t figure out what color duvet set should i get for master bedroom. My fiance and i will be moving to a new apartment but the carpeting is a light pink color and we do not have money to replace it. So we are trying to figure out what color should we decorate the room to make it look like a grown ups room instead of a womans room. We have taught of maybe black and white, or beige and brown. What do you think? and do you have any suggestions?
Would something like this go with the pink carpet?

decorating my bedroom?

dontwakeme

ive never done this before, so i need some help with colors and styles
the walls are white and the carpet is beige, and i can't paint the walls because im renting
since the walls and the floor are so plain, i want to add some color to my room, so ideas for colors and patterns of stuff (curtains, bedspreads, rugs, etc.) would be awesome

thanks!
im not too picky on colors (except pink. i like pink, but i dont want a pink themed room)

i guess im not really going for an all out theme (like funky, country, contemporary)
but more of like a happy medium
i saw the movie Easy A (love that movie!) and i really like the main character's bedroom

Ideas for a tropical themed bedroom?

Q. I was wondering if anyone knew of any unique websites to get this comforter or similar to this one:
http://www.bed-bath.net/Comforters/TROPICAL_SUNSET_COMFORTER.html

I love the pink/orange/yellow sunset comforter but this one is not available anymore. I wanted to base my whole bedroom off of it but I dont want the light color scheme like most other tropical comforters have. Im going to find a comforter and then use a color from it (Hopefully a bright pink) to paint the walls.
Also, ideas for accessories?
Thanks in advance :)

Answer
I found two bedding sets that I thought you may like:

http://www.amazon.com/Orifashion-Pieces-Bedding-Printed-Pattern/dp/B006WVU59W/ref=sr_1_11?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1326757395&sr=1-11

http://www.amazon.com/Duvet-Cover-Sunset-DENY-Designs/dp/B006DKSYOA/ref=sr_1_40?ie=UTF8&qid=1326757676&sr=8-40

I also did the whole tropical themed bedroom. I got some of my ideas and accessories from here: http://www.squidoo.com/teen-duvet-covers

You have to scroll down and find where it says "Beach Themed Bedroom".

Also, when I paint my walls, I usually go for the color that is least noticeable on the bedding. That will help make the color pop out of the comforter. Hope this helps and good luck! =)

please any ideas????

I have a basement room to call my own...its not finished its only wall studs n wires pretty much on the walls but i am very crafty i just have a blank spot in my head right now for some reason...any good ideas for anything i can do to my room? Also theres a room right next to this room and a doorway in between them but no door so i need an idea on how to keep my privacy that way any ideas accepted 10 points to best answer please help people im begging you!!! and yes i already asked this question before but no one really was able to help me...

help me maybe! give me a few and i'll edit with some ideas!

oh and whats your style like? colours or anything you are looking for?

I'l start with what i like then...

headboard ideas:
this is how to make an upholstered headboard:
http://www.bejane.com/headboard
its really good and step by step!

these are some shapes to give you an idea and then you can choose whatever fabric you want!
http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.coverupdesigns.co.uk/images/headboards.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.coverupdesigns.co.uk/headboards.htm&h=886&w=600&sz=153&hl=en&start=1&sig2=9ypkw03vGfjwArfGaqgyzA&um=1&tbnid=pyV_idNl0W_bpM:&tbnh=146&tbnw=99&ei=THgKSOOiBp3UhQKx443xDQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dheadboards%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

this is an ikea headboard that i think would be awesome because you could just screw it into the studs at any hight and it would be a long the same colours
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/50121274

headboard ideas from HGTV design star!
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/pac_ctnt_988/text/0,,HGTV_22056_33648,00.html
(sorry if that doesn't help i know i can't watch the video on mac)

a storage headboard might be an idea since it would fill some of the wall space
http://www.decorandmoredirect.com/bltabohe.html

i'm sure you could make one of these depending on your skill level! as another idea though you could just buy boxes of any sort and mount them on the studs and then you could arrange them in any pattern you wanted or size and you could paint them for a bit of colour
-- something funky could be mounting milk crates (you can get them in fun colours)

Walls:
you could paint the studs, just the fronts or all three sides and then you have the option to do alternating colours on alternating studs which would give colour!

you could get a very large over sized mirror, or peice of art to really take over a whole wall and make a big statement!

you could hang curtains or a big quilt on a wall to give colour and make it look like you have a finished wall!
-- i probably wouldn't hand curtains on all walls because it might get to look like a bit much!

you could possible hang wallpaper by gluing it to the two studs but you would have to be very careful about making sure that it didn't pucker in the open stops and that you were able to get it to touch right.. this would probably be pretty hard and might not work!

door:
i had a basement room too so i know what you are going through here!

i hung fabric that matched my bedroom as a doorway, it was a funky pattern on one side that matched my room and plane blue on the other so that i didn't look too crazy in the hall way! it was thick enough that i had privacy and easy to install just using a the type of rod you would hand a shower curtain with

other then hanging fabric or beads there aren't too many options unless you are amazing with tools and then you could perhaps make a saloon style swinging door that wouldn't involve changing the existing walls at all!

lighting:

you could do something fun like hang a mini chandelier or something crazy!

some fun lights:
http://www.grandlight.com/products_chandeliers_contemporary.htm

http://www.inspiredbylight.co.uk/mains-voltage-light-pendant-p-7405.html

and since i'm not sure if you have much natural light or not you might want to consider some small table lamps or floor lams to give the room some extra light!!

for general inspiration try just flipping through some decorating magazines and seeing what you like and what you can pull out of the rooms and add to yours!

little accessories and what you hang on your walls and your bedding really pull a room together! also you might want to consider a rug of some sort since i know basement floors can get pretty cold in the winter! (if you live somewhere that has winter haha)

Massie's bedroom????

Q. im redoing my room and i want it to look like massie's

can anyone help me?

Answer
I'm going to guess that you are talking about Massie Block from the "The Clique"; so here is a way to make your room look like Massie's:

begin with painting your walls all white, semigloss- or eggshell finish. next get hard-wood floors (Massie has no wall to wall carpet). Massie also has a brick wall that has been painted white. Paint stores sell thin sheets of brick that you can put up on one of your walls. (but remember its PERMANENT, so make sure its what YOU WANT). Next, all your furniture must be white, for instance a sleigh bed, white leather chaise, white desk (for your apple ibook or mac)and white night stands. Massie loves the color purple and purple is the color of royalty; so have fun with this color. Use it for a purple duvet cover, purple sheets, purple accent pillows, purple vase (or white case with purple flowers), lamp shade with white base, and maybe even purple curtains. Just remember do not use TOO MUCH purple, you don't want to overwhelm your room. Get a few white flokati rugs to place in front of your bed or on the side. For lighting don't forget the chandelier (purple or purple and white) Massie has one in her room. Also if you really want the Massie bedroom look don't forget the mannequin (because every girl needs away to look at outfits). Also to complete the look you'll need a mirrored shelf for your lip gloss collection and don't forget the flat screen tv for entertainment, if you have a dog get a purple fluffy dog bed, and white or purple stereo.

here are a few Massie Bedroom inspirations:

How do you save money?

.

So all summer I have had two jobs (min wage - 10.25) and I have worked every day.. I have tried to not buy many things and thought I did pretty good. But checking today I see that all summer I have saved just $2400 dollars. Is that a lot of money?

How much money would I need to move out?

Answer
You're on the right track, but you just need some savvy advice on savings, enter me! Well, if you've worked two jobs all summer, and you're only making $10.25, $2,400 is pretty good. It really just depends on how many hours you work and what your expenses are.

Now, if you are interested in saving for a particular goal, you need to set goals. For example, don't just say that you want to save to move out, say, "I want to save (X) amount of money by (xx/xx/xxxx) date". Be SPECIFIC. Set an exact goal, and then decide on how you're going to get there. For example, don't just say, "I'll save money each month", say "I am going to save (X) amount of money each month.

Now, getting specific with you... If you wish to save to move out here are some things to consider:
1. What kind of apartment do you want (big or small? Nice, safe area or rough cheap area? Metro area or rural?)
2. Will you have enough money in wages per month to pay bills each month making $10.25 per hour?
3. How much will you be able to and need to save for emergencies and miscenllaneous expenses that might come up (your tire going flat, a trip to the hospital for the flu, your tv breaks, etc.)
4. What are your long term financial goals? (College degree? Kids? House? New car?)

Now relate it all to you. Here's an example:
If I wanted to go from living with my parents to living on my own I would feel comfortable having $5,000, but I would prefer $10,000. $10,000 is probably excessive, but I like to know that I have a lot to fall back on in emergency situations.

Now, here is how I got that number:
1. The average apartment here (Gainesville, FL) would be about $1,000 per month for a nice 2-bedroom in a nicer area.
A. The security deposit, cleaning deposit and first months rent (usually the cost of 3 months of rent) would be about $3,000.
2. To furnish the apartment (if I got all new furniture, but not enough to fill the whole space, but just the essentials) it would be about $500 per room. Now, this would be if I was shopping cheap and for deals. It could easily be more!
A. A new bed would be about $300-$500; a dresser would be about $100-$200; etc...
3. I like to have extra money for "just in case" type of situations. If your radiator on your car breaks that's easily a $1,200 repair. If you have to go to the hospital it could be $200. Obviously you cannot account for everything, but you can have a back up fund.
4. What are your long term financial goals? Do you need to start saving up now to achieve those goals? Those are questions to consider!

As you can see it's not cheap. If you have the time and patience, if you're willing to wait, I would suggest saving up for what your cost of living would be for 6 months. For example, if all of your bills for a month are $2,000, save up $12,000. Also figure out where you want to live, the kind of furniture you want, etc so that you know how much you're going to spend (remember to budget upward, in excess. If you think it will be around $2,359 for an apartment, just round to $2,500.

I hope that helps. Just do some research!

A word on how to save...
A lot of people don't realize that rich people get rich because they get their money working for them. What does that mean? INTEREST RATES!

Take a CD (Certificate of Deposit): usually you have to have a minimum deposit of around $1,500 for it to bed effective. Let's take the $2,400 you have now. Say you take $2,000 and deposit it into a CD. Here is what happens:
-There will be an interest rate, something like 1.25% APY. This means that each year you will receive 1.25% of your CD: [$2,000(1.25)=$2,025. Try and find a high interest rate and deposit as much as possible. If you have, say, 3 years to save, deposit however much you want into the CD and leave it there, all but forget about it! After three years you will find that your deposit could grow by about 3% or more. **Usually the more years you are willing to wait the higher your interest rate!**

If you have any more questions, please feel free to e-mail me!

Why is my electricity bill so high?

miss_neci

I just moved into a small 1 br apartment in Gainesville, FL to attend the University of Florida as a grad student. I had previously stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment (including washing machine and dryer) and used <500 KWH per month. Just received my 1st full month's bill from GRU and it's 871 KWH for 33 days. That's $126! I'm extremely conservative (central air is usually set at ~75/80 degrees, lights are kept off when not in use) and I don't even have a washer/dryer here as I did in my previous apartment.

Could something be wrong with my meter?
It is a 2 level apt/townhouse, so I guess that may be 1 contributing factor as one responder indicated....
I actually turned my central air off at the breaker as of today. I'm pretty sure that is a major culprit. Guess that will eliminate any problems with poor insulation, etc. right??? This adjustment shouldn't phase me since I'm in Florida. I simply can't afford it: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmBeAKQbY14vHdbNTdTE88_sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080926174623AA3GmN9

Answer
I answer this question in detail in my article, "Why is my electric bill so high?" at http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/whyhigh.html but I'll give you a short summary here.

(1) It's likely mostly from your air conditioning.

(2) You are not "extremely conservative" if you run air conditioning at all, much less at 75 degrees! You might say that most people do so, but that would make that action "typical", not "extremely conservative".

(3) Turn off all your breakers and look at your electric meter. Did it stop spinning? If so, your meter's not broken. Don't waste your electric company's time by complaining to them. It's not their fault or problem.

(4) The answer about needing to unplug things you're not using is flat-out wrong. The small amount of vampire power is not the biggest part of your bill.

(5) Paul's suggestion that you match the reading on your electric meter with what's printed on your bill is spot-on. Make sure they didn't charge you for more than the meter says.

Vintage black bedroom?

Deanna

I am extremely set on painting my bedroom black, but with a vintage, old-timey feel instead of gothic. Any good ideas/tips for this? I need ideas for accents as well.
On a side note: I am fully aware of consequences that come with a black wall!

Answer
Hi, How about going for a soft grey wall as an accent colour, and displaying old black and white or sepia photographs of glamorous movie stars. A vintage dressing table painted in white, adorned with old perfume bottles, and a jewelerry mannequin for displaying all of your sparkly bits will finish the look perfecly. A gorgeous white or silver faux fur thrown across the bottom of your bed will add a bit of warmth and luxury to the theme.

I Hate my bedroom! Please answer!?

Q. So i can repaint it, i painted it not to long ago, its now a frosty lemon yellow, im fine with that it looks cool(:
But i hate my room :(
im 12, and its way to small for a 12 yr old! it has one window, a bed with ugly sheets, a tall (which makes it ugly :\ for me) thing that has 3 drawers and 3 huge shelfs, a dresser for clothes, a VERY cluttered closet, a huge desk, that has my tv on it with a drawer that has my dvd player, and then its all cluttered in there.

I hate it! it also has no personality, a poster, which i dont like :\, and 3 quotes i put on paper (yes thats how desperate i was for personaility in my room :\)

IDEAS?
Maybe i could ask for money to decorate my room or something?
Yes they are matching
What color is your bedding, trim, furniture, curtain and flooring.

Bedding well, idk, im going out otmorrow to get new blue covers, and light blue sheets

Trim: white
Fruniture: The matching set thing is natural color brown (looks like tree bark, but light brown) and white

Curtain: white
Floor: Blue
I think the bed is like a twin.. or something.

Answer
I have questions before I can answer...
Is you furniture a matching set.
What color is your bedding, trim, furniture, curtain and flooring.
What size is the bed.

Measure the room please.

Ok you have alot of BIG STUFF in the room. The Blue will off set the yellow nicely. In the tall dresser (armoire) Put the TV and the DVD player inside. Then start bagging up stuff to go sleep in the basement. Make sense of what you bag up. Clothing that dosen't fit.. Summer clothing you can't wear now. Toys...do dads. Keep 3 old friends. Games you don't play anymore go out. Remove ALL the other decoration for now. Everything. Make a box of your things that you had laying around your room that serve no function and select 4 - the others get stored. If you find you are missing something bring that one thing in. If you really are itching for some things after that rotate your items meaning put the ones you selected away to replace the ones you are bringing in.

Take a cold hard look at your room. A few large items will look better then 99 little ones. Head to a thrift shop and pick up some old frames. Then to the craft shop. Grab paint the color of the new bedding and paint the frames. ( Loose the wierd old pictures in the old frames) http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/ny/05fleamarket08092010.jpg Take the quotes you printed and mount them on thick card board. Then place them in the frames on the wall. Get a BIG basket in white in there put things that get tossed around your room like your back pack and cover it with a piece of fabric. If mom can sew or you can cover pillows with the same fabric. You can even make the pillows in letters. Just stuff them with polyfil. Add a furry trim around the pillows.

Seriously the trick here is a few large nice items out. Something on top of the tall dresser too. Ask mom for help if you need I'm sure she will be happy to work with you.

Where is the manufacturers label located on bedroom furniture?

Glenn A

I have a mid-century bedroom set and I'm curious to know who the manufacturer was.

Answer
On furniture, unless it's upholstered furniture, there isn't a label per say. Usually, a furniture manufacturer will stamp or burn their label on the underside of tables, on the backing of armoires and dressers, etc.
