Master bedroom furniture is traditional dark brown (new), what color can I paint walls?
Q. Bedroom furniture consits of King size bed, two night stands and nine draw dresser. Considering to have 50" TV over dresser, sitting area and include small kitchenette.

A. Hi!

Brown is a neutral color, so basically, you can paint any color under the rainbow with it... it all depends on what you like. There are a few things to remember though, and I have a few suggestions... Hope this helps:

To have complete color harmony in any room, you need to have 3 colors: 1 dominant color (usually the walls), 1 medium color (usually the trim, molding, ceiling, furniture, etc.) and 1 accent color (usually decorative accents such as cushions, vases, throws, etc.). You can use the same color as your funiture as you do on an accent wall or all the walls... it depends on lots of things like your lighting, but we'll get to that later.

In decorating, black and white are not considered colors. White is the absence of all color. That's why you can match it with any color under the rainbow. Black is the mixture of all colors. That's why it too, can be mixed with any color under the rainbow. It's not necessary to have any white in a room, but it is very important that you have at least one black item: a vase, a picture frame, a throw rug, a cushion, a curtain rod, a lamp, etc.... you get the idea). The black will ground ALL of your colors together. So don't forget to add something black in your room.

What color of brown is your furniture: Black-brown (as in very dark espresso coffee), dark chocolate brown, etc. Since you didn't say, here are some color schemes that work with different types of brown furniture. The way to use them is for the 1st color = dominant 2nd color = medium and 3rd color = accent. Of course, you can use them in any other way you like, thought the ones listed here are best together in just this way. (after, you'll get some links to some nice color inspiration).

Chocolate brown & Terra-cotta & Taupe
Chocolate brown & Metallic Gold & Neutral bisque
Chocolate brown & Delicate teal & Teal blue
Chocolate brown & Teal blue & Gernaium red
Chocolate brown & Brick red & Sky blue

Espresso brown & Soft Orange & Coffee with cream
Espresso brown & Aquamarine & Silver
Espresso brown & Blushing Pink & Silver
Espresso brown & Hot pink and Icy Silver
Espresso brown & Candy apple red & Graphite gray
Espresso brown & Cinnamon & Pale sky blue

Light purple & Teal Blue & Geranium red
Cream & Earthy green & Cinnamon
Gold & Copper & Brownish Taupe
Coral brown & Cream & Rich brown
Brilliant yellow & Lavender & Light brown
Orange & Burnt Orange & Brown
Gray brown & Red & Cream
Orange & Dark brown & Metallic gold
Golden yellow & Sky blue & Velvety brown
Aquamarine & Butterscotch gold & dark brown
Cinnamon & Dark brown & Sky blue

This part would have been easier if you would have given us the style of furniture you have, but the pics should help for color inspiration... I hope you enjoy this, because I certainly enjoyed doing the research for this. I LOVE doing this !!!! :)

So... hope that was fun...

The best and most trusted way to find the color for any room, is to take an accessory or decorative item that will be going into that room: the duvet cover, the curtains, a painting, a rug, blinds, shutters, upholstered furniture, a lamp... you get the idea). Choose the item with passion. Make it something that you ABSOLUTELY LOVE, perhaps it was handed down by your great-grandmother or a cherished item you worked hard for. Or make it something that just SCREAMED out your name when you were shopping, so you knew you had to have it! Choose your color pattern from that item. And take it from there.

Keep in mind too, that color is an amazing thing! There's psychology behind color - it can make you have wonderful, relaxing dreams... or it can keep you from falling asleep, especially if you're already a wound-up 6 year old little boy! It can make you feel warm and comfortable, or hot and stifled. It can make you feel nice, fresh and cool - or it can make you feel like parts of you are going to freeze off. Color can be your friend or your enemy. And really, the earth can "shed some light" on us to help decide every color scheme. Here's how:
What direction does your room face - North, South, East or West? It makes a difference. If you've got the sun pounding down on your bedroom window, you'll want to stay away from warm colors, such as reds, yellows, oranges, etc. They'll make you feel too hot. Opt for cooler colors, such as blues, turquoise, cool creams... think mediterranean beach style here. In a room facing North, that doesn't get much light, you'll opt more for warmer colors and brighter colors: yellow, bright pinks, golden hues. Here's a most interesting link about how color affects us psychologicallly:

http://keelynet.com/biology/coloraff.htm

That's all I guess... Hope I helped you choose your color ;-)

You're always welcome to email and I'd enjoy knowing what color scheme you chose...!

Is there an Italian tradition about not ever replacing your wedding day bedroom set?
Q. My husband is Italian and for our wedding gift his parents bought us this huge bedroom set, well we have had it several years and the home we are moving into will not hold this big furniture. I want to sell it and buy more updated smaller things, he says it is bad luck and an Italian tradition to keep this first marriage set. Is this true, or some line of crap he's trying to pull not to upset Mommy?

A. I'm Italian too, and I never heard about such a tradition. Probably your hubby is just making this up because he doesn't want his parents to feel offended when they'll come to visit you in your new home and won't see the furniture they bought for you two...

How does Chicago compares to Phoenix, Arizona or New York City in terms of housing/jobs/environment/people?

Q. Just want to know which city is better for me to move to for affordable studios/1 bedroom under $600-$700/mth and employment in office/clerical/psychology fields.

A. Stick to Arizona, the housing prices are rough in Chicago and NYC.

Even though the Chicagoland area is the largest employment area in the US, the housing in both the large cities would have to set you back at least $700.

is Phoenix AREA a nice place to live?
Q. so im from San Francisco, CA.. and am having my baby in sept of this year. Its too expensive to live here in the bay area.. its over $2,000 for a two bedroom. which is ridiculous and something i couldn't afford. I have about $8,000 saved up just for renting a place for a few months while looking for a job.. could you find a 2 bedroom or 1 bedroom for under $700? also, is the job market pretty good? i went to school for esthetics and my ideal job would be working in a spa. overall is phoenix nice? THANKS!

A. That is all workable but don't move without a job. We have numerous spas including our luxurious resorts. Fina a realtor to help you narrow in on an affordable and safe location to live AFTER you secure a new job. Phoenix is a beautiful city with a lot to offer. I'm sure you are aware of our heat in the summer which is off set by our beautiful winters. That would be a big change from San Francisco. Good luck.

parents- how do you keep toys under control?
Q. I always vowed that my children's toys would not overtake my home. So my son has one basket with soft toys in it, and a round laundry basket with his playing toys, which is in the living room. I don't particuarlly like how there is just a random laudry basket full of toys in the middle of my living room, and wonder how other people store their kids toys, or if they have any ideas.
My son is nearly one, so where ever we put them, he needs to be able to get them without help.

A. I so hear your pain. We moved from a 2000 square foot house to a 700 square foot mini home. When we had the space, I rearranged the living room in the big house so I could literally shove all the toys into one corner so they were out of sight. Now I don't have that option.

So we have two large plastic totes outside with outdoor toys (his large duplex blocks got relegated to an outdoor status along with many of his trucks, large noisy play tools, etc..) Inside I have in the living room one rubbermaid tote (one of the common big ones, not the really huge one) and two small cupboards I got from Walmart that have a door and 2 shelves. They were $20 each but had to put them together myself. There's several styles, they all fit together to make a custom shelving unit, and they come with the straps to attach them to the wall so little ones can't pull them over. I have many more of these being used as storage options all over my house now.

Then 2 weeks ago I had to add a diaper box to hold some of his other toys that I couldn't leave on the floor anymore as we got a puppy (yes we are insane). His bedroom has two drawers in a nightstand for his rainy day/quiet time puzzles and electronic toys.

One thing about toys, is you can purge but they sneak back in. Daddy buys something spur of the moment and brings it home. You get Jr a treat while you are out for being good. He goes to visit Aunty who just happens to have a new truck he can take home. You stop at a lawn sale and see that $100 farm set you would love to have for Jr for only $10 so that comes home. Then you purge again and start all over!

You'll find a system that works, Wait though as it only gets better. Start adding sports equipment and computer/video stuff to the mix!!!

What is a reasonable price for a used bedroom set?

Q. My husband and I have an old oak bedroom set, still in pretty good condition, that we are wanting to sell in our neighborhood garage sale. It would be a dresser with a large mirror, a tall dresser (has some slight damage on the top in the back, it is difficult to see, the damage is above eye level) a night stand and a queen size bed frame. We have different ideas about what is a good price to ask for it. Any thoughts?

A. If it were perfect and rather new, I'd say about 40% of the original price. Since, it's not perfect, and I don't know the quality or brand name, how about 20% of the original price - cash, no delivery.

Where to get a good bedroom set?
Q. I'm a teenage, and I have outgrown my old bunk-bed kid room...anyway, I was wondering where a good place to look for a new bedroom set teenage friendly. Know any names of some good companies. Higher quality than Art-Van but a little more cost friendly then Ethan Ellen.

A. Jcpenny catalog or on line has nice bedroom stuff. I usually get my bed sheet sets at target and i like the furniture rooms to go has.

do a Google search or look and see in the classified ads for sales. Moving sales are great. Most people that move dont wanna take there old stuff either because there moving in a smaller place or want a new set for there new house

Check your directory for local furniture stores.

most good deals you can find online even amazon.com has furniture

good luck finding what you want

How early to people usually show up to an estate sale?
Q. I found pictures of an elderly woman's estate sale. She has a very cool antique bedroom set (dresser, nightstand, four-poster bed and another chest of drawers). I want to know how early I should get there if the estate opens at 9am. Also, do I go in there and make an offer or will the items be priced? Are these prices generally negotiable?

A. If the estate sale is run by some sort of company, it is doubtful prices will be negotiated. It can't hurt to ask how low they would be willing to go.
These people know how much antiques cost and they get a percentage of the profit from the estate.
If the sale starts at 9 am, you should be there by 8:50 (just in case they hand out #'s or let a certain amount of people in at one time).

Good Luck and Happy Hunting.

How does ‘The Speckled Band’ create a powerful sense of evil?

Q. My teacher set this as homework and it seems impossible to answer this question. I'm finding it difficult to write an essay on this question. Can you help me

A. The Speckled Band was the description given by Julia's sister as she died "The band, the speckled band." she gasped then died. The story is of a man, Doctor Roylott, and his two stepdaughters who had each been left a legacy by his late wife when they married. This would leave him with very little so suspicion would fall on him. Now Helen is engaged to be married. Holmes' investigation of the mother's estate reveals that its value has decreased significantly, and if both daughters had married, Dr. Roylott, Helen's ill-tempered and violent stepfather, would be left with very little, while the marriage of even one would be crippling. Therefore, the main suspicion falls on him.

Dr. Roylott has required Helen to move into a particular room of his heavily mortgaged ancestral home, Stoke Moran. A number of details about the place are mysterious and disturbing. A low whistling sound is heard late at night, as well as a metallic clank. There is a strange bell cord over the bed, and it does not seem to work any bell. Stoner surmises that Julia might have been murdered by the gypsies, whom Dr. Roylott permits to live on the grounds—they wear speckled handkerchiefs around their necks. A cheetah and a baboon also have the run of the property, for Dr. Roylott keeps exotic pets from India. Helen feels reluctant to sleep in the room.

After Helen leaves, Dr. Roylott comes to visit Holmes, having traced his stepdaughter. He demands to know what Helen has said to Holmes, but Holmes refuses to say. Dr. Roylott bends an iron poker into a curve in an attempt to intimidate Holmes, but Holmes is unaffected as he maintains a rather jovial demeanor during the encounter. After Roylott leaves, Holmes straightens the poker out again, thus showing that he is just as strong as the doctor.

Having arranged for Helen to spend the night somewhere else, Holmes and Watson sneak into her bedroom without Dr. Roylott's knowledge. Holmes says that he has already deduced the solution to the mystery, and this test of his theory turns out to be successful. They hear the whistle, and Holmes also sees what the bell cord is really for, although Watson does not. Julia's last words about a "speckled band" were in fact describing "a swamp adder, the deadliest snake in India". The venomous snake had been sent to Julia's room by Dr. Roylott to murder her. After the swamp adder bit Julia, he called off the snake with the whistling, which made the snake climb up through the bell cord, disappearing from the scene.

Now the swamp adder is sent again through the ventilator by Dr. Roylott to kill Julia's sister Helen. Holmes attacks the snake, sending it back through an air ventilator connected to the next room. The aggravated snake bites Dr. Roylott instead, and, within seconds, he is dead. Grimly noting that Holmes is indirectly responsible for Dr. Roylott's death, Holmes remarks that he is unlikely to feel much guilt over the death.

As a matter of interest there is no such snake as a swamp adder and there has been speculation as to which snake Conan Doyle was referring. The Indian cobra, which may have been the inspiration, has black and white speckled marks, and is one of the most lethal of the Indian venomous snakes with a neurotoxin which will often kill in a few minutes. It is also a good climber and is used by snake charmers in India. However, snakes are deaf, therefore it would not be possible to signal a snake by whistling. Also, while snakes are capable of climbing solid objects, there is no way one could have climbed a cord.

How can i make my bedroom like a spa?
Q. I already have a bedding set picked out :
http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductsHOM.aspx?DeptID=25436&CatID=36035&CatTyp=DEP&ItemTyp=C&GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=12787e2&ProdSeq=10&Cat=bedding&Dep=Bed+++Bath&PCat=&PCatID=28942&RefPage=ProductList&Sale=&ProdCount=43&RecPtr=&ShowMenu=&TTYP=&ShopBy=0&RefPageName=CategoryAll%252Easpx&RefCatID=28942&RefDeptID=25436&Page=2&CmCatId=25436|37326|28942|36035

and using the same color walls as in the picture and I am not getting any new furniture any ideas on how to make it relaxing and i also have a benchseat by a window and a desk where i have my computer and do my homework. So i need a place to work and relax after working and i cant get a new desk. also anything you can show me that I can put in my closet to use for storage.

A. things that will help add relaxation to your room are quite simple. First you need to seperate relaxation from work. I recomend finding a way to seperate your computer desk from the rest of your room, save up and buy a partician or screen that you can put infront of the desk when its not being used. Plants <preferably real> will add to your room, candles, a water fountain <10$ at target> all help. Make sure you get rid of anything that is childish in nature, band posters things like that, put up pictures of nature, beaches, trees, sunsets, waves, oceans, things of that nature. Stick with the browns as much as possible as your main color and use the blue as your accent color. If you have a free corner in your room, get a bunch of blue and brown pillows, and a blanket, throw them all in the corner and use that as a place to read and relax, maybe have a small lap desk next to it where you can have a rock garden, candles, incense on it, if you do meditation that would be a good place for it as well. Get some relaxing music such as enya or meditation music and keep it low as a backdrop. For a real spa quality, get a humidifier.

How do I set up a wireless speaker system in my apartment?
Q. So I've got a desktop PC with wireless internet. I want to get speakers in my lounge/diner and in my bedroom that will play the music from my PC e.g. itunes/spotify.
Is it possible? Is it complicated?
I only have a small 1 bed apartment and i only need speakers in 2 rooms.
I'm in the UK by the way

A. Simple and easy. See below.

P.S. I don't believe wireless speaker technology is expensive, how can that be? One Apple Airport Express has a range of 150 feet for a secured wireless network, and it can be added to an existing network which can extend the range in the household if necessary. The dual band Airport Extreme offers 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels, faster response time alongside a likely 300 feet of Wi Fi area, depending on circumstances. http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/features/frequency.html

A. Good Luck Mr. Dorsky
On July 20, 1969, as commander of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. His first words after stepping on the moon, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," were televised to Earth and heard by millions. But just before he re-entered the lander, he made the enigmatic remark: "Good luck, Mr. Gorsky." Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs. Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what the "Good luck, Mr.Gorsky" statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled.

On July 5, 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida, while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old question to Armstrong. This time he finally responded. Mr. Gorsky had died and so Neil Armstrong felt he could answer the question.

In 1938, when he was a kid in a small mid-west town, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit a fly ball, which landed in his neighbor's yard by the bedroom windows.

His neighbors were Mr. and Mrs. Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky. "Sex! You want sex?! You'll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!"
This is a true random story!

Arizona or Texas is a better place to live?
Q. For a teacher which state may offer more? Which state has a lower living expense? I love teaching but finances are a reality that cannot be forgotten.

Which State? Why?

A. Both are affordable... it really depends on what you like. If you like dry heat and dessert then Arizona is way better and nicer than the Texas dessert (we found El Paso to be one of the least friendly, and most run-down, places we've ever visited). If you don't mind humidity and thunderstorms, and you dig greenery then the Texas Hill Country (Austin & San Antonio) all the way to East Texas (Houston area) has lots of forest, streams, lakes, etc. Both offer affordable housing... I personally prefer Texas because the people (at least in the hill Country and the Houston suburbs) are generally warm... and I don't really like the dessert. One draw back to Texas though is crazy-high property taxes (typically run around 2.7-3%, but can get as high as 4% by the time you're done adding them all up in a newer "bedroom" community)... and unless you're bringing in a giant income the absence of state income tax in Texas will not off-set this tremendously high property tax... I ran the numbers as we are considering the move from So. Cal. to Texas and our overall tax burden would actually go up... on the positive side we could still afford a nice, new home in a nice area despite the high taxes. One big potential plus for you as a teacher in Texas is that it seems that they take a lot of pride in their public schools (generally beautiful campuses)... we have several friends from Texas who say the public schools there are quite good. One big cultural change (at least from So. Cal.) is that it is my understanding that public education in Texas is considered a privilege (and not a right)... so parents understand that if their kid does something bad enough to get expelled it will be their burden to find a school that is willing to take their kid... I would imagine this would make keeping order in the classroom a little easier for a teacher. Best of luck!

how long does my husband have to be in the air force before i can live on base with him.?
Q. My husband is joining the air force soon and we have a 6 week old son. I want to know how long it would be before we will be able to live on base with him and what life on the base would be like.

A. IT depends on his job. He'll do his 8.5 weeks in San Antonio at Basic and then will go on to Tech School. Once he graduates Tech School, he will be able to come home to you to and everyone moves together. He will be able to set up the mover's to come and pack your things (or you can if you have a POA), and they will pack you up. You will then be able to go together as a family to his first duty station. They will pay him DLA to help pay for moving costs (usually around $1500), Hewill also receive per diem while in transit. You can stay in Temporary lodging for up to 30 days (this varies on the base but usually 30 days) while you find housing. If you want to live on base, you need to apply for housing at your nearest base 30 days before you arrive at his new duty station,. this way you are on the list faster. You can do this for him as long as you have a POA and copy of his orders.

Life on base is basically like living in a little town. There's the BX, the commissary, gym, library, thrift store, pool...it's pretty self contained. We have always lived on base and love it because he can get to work quickly and always come home for lunch/dinner depending on his shift. We save money because he doesn't have to eat out. Our house is very nice too...Since you have one child, you will only get a two bedroom home. Could be a house, could be a duplex, just depend on the base. You can always choose to live off-base and he will get BAH to help cover housing costs but you can end up paying out of pocket.

wow..I love getting thumbs down when I'm right..ha ha ha Believe me, you'll be with him BEFORE he gets to his first base.

How can i re-decorate my bedroom? But im not aloud to paint it?

Q. Have anyone got any ideas to re-decorate my bedroom. But my parents wont let me paint it again untill next year lol. I am thinking of buying new duvet and pillow covers, new mirror, wall clock and making everything modern. but this will take a long time to save up for and i am quite skint :L Thanks. Everything is considered and helpful :D x
Also...does anyone know where i can get really nice bedroom mirrors and duvet covers that are really modern and cheapish. x

A. The thing that is going to "refresh" your room the most and give it the best new look is going to be the bedding. That makes your bedding top priority, so you should set aside most of the money for that. These are a few of my suggestions that should change it up the most for the least amount of money:

4-piece set that includes comforter, bedskirt, and two shams.
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/North-Crest-Home-Silhouette-Floral-4-piece-Comforter-Set/3084457/product.html?

8-piece set includes duvet cover, 2 euro shams, bedskirt and 2 decorative pillows. This one is my favorite and the least expensive at $59.99

http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3084237&cp=1331605.2623890&view=all&parentPage=family

Your accents should be a bold color, to help play up the modern look, but they also need to correspond with your bedding. For the mirror (I'm assuming you meant a wall mirror) I found this.

$18.00 black wall mirror:

http://www.target.com/Wall-Mirror-Black-25-5x15-5/dp/B0015EB4V4/sr=1-4/qid=1219356743/ref=sr_1_4/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&field-browse=1038576&rh=k%3Amirror%2Cp%5F3%3A%240-%2424&page=1

For the clock, I love this one, and I think it will really help with the modern feel:

http://www.target.com/Silver-Ball-Retro-Wall-Clock/dp/B0002IGJ5U/qid=1219357306/ref=br_1_4/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&node=197723011&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=197723011&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=2

To soothe the tone a little and make it a more relaxing atmosphere, I reccomend one of these candlegardens:

http://www.target.com/Candle-Garden/dp/B0001BRMSQ/sr=1-2/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_2/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

http://www.target.com/Candle-Garden-Red/dp/B000NING46/sr=1-3/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_3/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

http://www.target.com/Candle-Garden-Green/dp/B000NING4Q/sr=1-1/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_1/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

http://www.target.com/Coffee-Break-Candle-Gift-Set/dp/B00006BHK2/sr=1-5/qid=1219357372/ref=sr_1_5/602-1446866-5975801?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Acandle%20garden&page=1

You also might consider getting posters or wall art and maybe a floor plant (like a palm tree). For the posters, go to

http://www.art.com/

They have a lot of really nice, inexpensive posters. Some come in frames.

Good luck and I hope I helped! :)

What colors go well with distressed white bedroom furniture?
Q. My fiance & I just bought at house. We have the orginal hardwood floor in the master bedroom. I was wondering what colors go well with destressed white furniture? What color bedding? Curtians? Walls? HELP please!
(I hate red)

A. I think a blue - like sherwin williams' "candid blue" - with the distressed white furniture would look very cottage-y. Check it out on bedroom #3:
http://sherlink.sherwin.com/swapp/color_visualizer/index.jsp

Blue & white or coral & white gingham curtains & bedding or a quilt set would enhance the shabby chic/cottage style.

What is a good bedroom idea for a tween?
Q. I am getting a new bedroom when i move to my new house, and i was wondering if anyone had any good ideas. My favourite colors are blue, green, and purple.

A. Use any one of the three on your bedroom walls and use the other two plus white or black for accent colors. It should look pretty decent as all three are neighbors on the color wheel.

What are some good ideas for a boy's and girl's crib bedding set?
Q. I have a boy who's 18 months and a girl who's 3 months. They will be sharing a room, and I wanted to decorate their rooms as a set. For instance, my husband and I thought of Peter Pan & Tinkerbell, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Dora & Diego, Princess & Prince, or Princess & Knights/Dragons. I'm still undecided and would like some suggestions. Let me know your opinions, and if you can think of any more boy & girl bedroom sets please let me know. Thank you!

A. How about something that would work with both..bumble bees/nature that sort of thing to have a calmer looking room.
You have covered so many, I cannot think of any pairs without dating myself..pebbles and bambam, alvin and the chipmunks have girls on them but dont know their names,

Where can we buy a new Bedroom set?
Q. We are looking for a new bedroom set and wondered where we could get one without spending thousands on it....We went to IKEA but we were not crazy about any of the sets there. Any you can reccommend online? Thank you!

A. It really depends on where you live. Here in Wisconsin, the place to go is Furniture Deals & Steals, with one in Madison, one near La Crosse, and one in Baraboo (that I'm aware of). I've seen another place, advertised on TV, called Jennifer Convertibles, that seemed to have some sensible prices on couches...so maybe they'd have good prices on bedroom sets. You'll just have to look around your area and make some calls, and also on the internet too. There are lots of independent furniture stores to check out. And sometimes you can get a really good deal at some second-hand places, or even an estate auction. Then there's the random hotel auctions, which you can often get a really decent set of furniture at a good price. I'm not fooled by name brands though. My daughter used to work at Ashley Furniture, and she saw how it was really made. Cheap junk. And I bought an Englander king sized mattress 5 years ago, that came with a 15 year warranty, and it's in need of a new mattress (sagging) already. Make sure you and another person lays on the mattress for several minutes before buying it, to check for comfort and workmanship. Even if you do all the right things, there's still no guarantee you'll get something that will last longer than a few years, depending on how hard you are on your furniture. Hope you find what you're looking for. <*)))><

What is the best color to paint wicker bedroom furniture?

Q. I bought a used wicker bedroom set. It is white and I want to paint it. My bedroom colors are brown and olive green. I thought about painting it dark brown. Should I leave it white? Another choice was a nice green color. Decision, decisions. I need help. What are your suggestions? Will it be too much to paint it a sage. Decorators I am waiting for your reply.

A. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT COLOR ARE YOUR WALLS IF YOU A DARK COLOR, YOU WOULD WANT TO PAINT IT A LIGHT COLOR OR WHITE, AND IF YOU HAVE LIGHT COLOR WALLS THEN YOU WOULD GO FOR A DARK COLOR FOR THE FURNITURE...

How could i make my own bedroom set?
Q. I cant find any good websites for plans or anything:/ i want to sell my current bedroom set and build my own white one with a white bookcase, dresser, nightstands and bedframe. Thanks:)

A. if you are really good with your hands then use your imagination! wood need not be flat for the frames and dressers. think of a log cabin and notice the old ones are made of round wood. my dad has used real cedar and made lots of wooden things. i would sand the place where you strip the bark off leave it natural and then polyurethane it if you want. i have seen many wooden things made. good luck! sometimes the best things in life are free! also, in the old days i do not think nails were even used but do not quote me on that.

How much does a girls bedroom set sell for?
Q. The bedroom set includes a twin bed frame (matress not included), a nightstand with 2 drawers, and a desk with a pull out (for possible computer keyboard) and has 3 drawers. The bedroom furniture is all in white and has been used. What would be a rough estimate on what it would sell for? (craigslist)
Thanks in advance :)

A. Basic rule of thumb is: 1/4 of what it cost when it was new.

The actual cost when it was new will depend on the quality of the wood and of the construction. For instance, are the drawer joints dovetailed? Is it solid wood (and what kind of wood), veneered, or painted particleboard? There is a huge possible price range of what such furniture might cost.

Used white bedroom furniture set, as described. Assume the parents are not wealthy and didn't buy high-end furniture. Probably $100-125 value for the whole lot. Less for damage, staining, chips, etc.

Where are some good places to buy female furniture for the bedroom?

Q. I know the question may seem weird but I am a female and I want something artsy and youthful that looks right for a chic woman. I dont want to search online for "girl" furniture because I know I'll just get furniture for children. I went to ikea and saw a bedroom set that was okay but more of the young college student. Walmart and Target, I'm afraid will be under quality and a lot of the other stores I checked out online seem to be old looking. I am very picky but I was wondering if anyone knew a place, maybe they know a female between 20-27 and where they got their bedroom furniture. I would even take crazy styles. Im tired of seeing the usual bedroom sets. If you know other places for furniture for other parts of the home thats fine too. Those are easier to find. Its the stupid bedroom that I'm stuck with.

I might be sleeping on the couch for awhile.

Q. I already have a bedding set picked out :
http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductsHOM.aspx?DeptID=25436&CatID=36035&CatTyp=DEP&ItemTyp=C&GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=12787e2&ProdSeq=10&Cat=bedding&Dep=Bed+++Bath&PCat=&PCatID=28942&RefPage=ProductList&Sale=&ProdCount=43&RecPtr=&ShowMenu=&TTYP=&ShopBy=0&RefPageName=CategoryAll%252Easpx&RefCatID=28942&RefDeptID=25436&Page=2&CmCatId=25436|37326|28942|36035

and using the same color walls as in the picture and I am not getting any new furniture any ideas on how to make it relaxing and i also have a benchseat by a window and a desk where i have my computer and do my homework.

Thanks
I am looking on the Ralph Lauren site. Do you have the name of the brownish gold color?
I found it thanks. Well my room is a master bedroom in a condo. I don't think its that big so maybe I should choose a lighter color.

A. Mushroom. It's a great color and goes with just about everything, but especially with dark brown wood. My friends have it throughout their home.

I'm buying new bedroom furniture, what kind of wood should I look for?

Q. Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.
What about this furniture? Does it seem okay? http://www.mybobs.com/catalog/set_view.asp?packageid=585&room=bedroom

A. The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.
Hope this helps.

Is there a big difference between coffee and espresso colored furniture?
Q. I am trying to complete a bedroom set by purchasing different parts from different sets. The headboard I bought was beautiful, but the dressers and armoires weren't. So I'm putting together my own "set". I would consider my headboard to be an espresso color and there is a dresser online that is considered "coffee" color. There are other dressers that are espresso but I L0VE this dresser. If I were to purchase it would the colors be totally off?

A. Espresso is nearly black Coffee is a very dark brown ..As far as the colors being off...yes depends on their proximity and the lighting too. PLus the colors are wildly different manufacturer to manufacturer. It could work especially if it is multitoned.. What I would do is take a photo that accurately represents the color of the headboard and email it to them but their monitors could be skewed.

I want to buy a comforter for my bedroom but I can't find anything?

Q. Hi guys!
My room is a light olive green color and one wall is dark beige. I need to find a pretty comforter that would match it, but I can't find anything!
I am a teenager, but the problem is that I am looking for something a little more mature and feminine than hot pink zebra stripes. And all the adult comforters are too mature for me.
If any of you guys can find anything I will love you forever!
So the basics are:
I need something feminine but not old lady.

I'm Clearing my very small home out and having a yard sale?
Q. and I need to clear out 1 small room of 4 to set up work area for my small busness. I have no idea on priceing old albums ,books, fashion wear, cup collections,2 50 gal fish tanks, workout equip.,office supply tools, bedroom furn,. craft supply, furn etc etc any suggtions how long should I have it before I donate anything.

A. Well, if I were in your shoes, it all depends on:
(1) how badly you need the money from the yard sale;
(2) how badly you need that room cleared out for your business;
(3) how you handle the advertising of your stuff/sale;
(4) how patient you are through the entire process.

Be honest with yourself about your goals. Is the stuff really worth anything? Check out a couple consignment shops and thrift stores to see what sort of pricing you are competing with in your area. I'd probably take the best items to a consignment shop, where they get a % of the selling price for hosting your things and handling the sale. This also clears a lot of smace right away. Anything you have that might be of questionable value to others and not worth much at yard sale prices, donate it at the beginning. Don't frustrate yourself trying to sell items that are not desirable in your area at this time. Again, you have cleared a bit of space in that room very quickly. Yard sales are hot, sweaty, boring tasks that compromise your entire weekend. Then you will be fending off the early birds that show up at your doorstep at the first light. Not to mention the ones that continue to drop by in hopes of picking up bargains at the end. Put a price on your time for all this labor. Compare that price to the anticipated value of the sale. Chances are, at this point you might be thinking it may not be worthwhile to hold a yard sale. Now weigh in how you will feel if the neighbors on your street come over to eyeball you junk and then go home (empty handed). After putting the best stuff on consignment, and advertising the other choice pieces in the local neighborhood newspapers, and donating what probably won't sell, Take what is left, lay it out on a sheet or blanket on the front lawn and have a one day clearance. This actually works better if you live in an apartment complex and can get permission to hold a stairwell yard sale. Then the neighbors will be helping to attract customers with their stuff too. If it doesn't sell in the first day after all that preparation, pitch it or donate it. Good Luck.

Should house electrical cables be kept out of new thermal insulation?
Q. So I'm thinking of insulating my attic. I have a slab foundation and all my electrical runs through the attic. I know certain hot features (light fixtures, transformers, etc) need a certain amount of clearance around them so they can dissipate heat - that's in the electrical code. Do runs of individual cable, runs of multiple cables (which have to be derated just because they're near other cables) or junction boxes need to be kept clear of insulation too? The derating business makes me think they need space to dissipate heat, but I can't find anything on the topic. Also, if they are on the house side of the summer heat (it easily reaches 140 up there) wouldn't that be better anyway?

A. i have to laugh occasionally, when i think about how the NEC (National Electrical Code) has gotten folks so scared..Article 310 has always stated the ampacities of wires...#12 guage copper, according to Code, can handle 30 amps of current. (Article 310-16) although it stipulates that #12 will be attached to no more than a 20 amp breaker or fuse.

Think of your average bedroom in a house. 6 to 8 receptacles. per. room..max current load...1 clock radio...1 lamp. 1 television...potentially 5 amps on a set of wires meant to carry at least 30...Unless you have a factory in your house, with the continuous load factor figured....no more than 80% load per circuit breaker...don't worry about it...your house is never gonna get hot enough, to affect the wires...

keep the NEC rated clearances for the inductive loads....i.e. transformers,,,flourescent lites...Can lites need space to breathe, as they are resistive loads...both produce heat...give em room..

Continuous loads are a major factor with the NEC and NFPA.These are loads of three hours or more. i doubt that anyone on these boards has a continuous load...unless they are growing...something....

Keep your cables as best as you can on top of the insulation...let everything breathe...and unless your growing weed or making beef jerky, with lites...don't worry about the heat factor...remember...CONTINUOUS LOADS...

I was given a king size bed for a spare bedroom.Where can i find deals on sheets.?
Q. Would like to look online for miss matched or seconds. Need help finding some sites that offer these.
This room will only be used for the occasional over night visitor so i do not need a perfect set. Thanks.

A. Cheapest place I've found for sheets, especially kings, are off price stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, especially in there clearance shelves -- Ross Dress for Less stores are probably the cheapest. I have bought king sheets there for under $10 and even got a $120 king duvet and shams set for $14.99. I have never seen prices on line that can beat what you will find in these stores, except a couple of times when Target has clearance sales on discontinued items on their website. Last year I got a down comforter for $25 and a set of 300 count cotton sheets for $20 from Target online. It's hit or miss, though. Sometimes they don't have anything at all. Ross stores always have plenty of stock, and it is usually good quality cotton from brands like Laura Ashley, Springmaid, Lauren or Springs.

Color Schemes For a Teenage Girls Bedroom?
Q. I would like my room to look more appealing. Right now it looks to.... bland. I can't paint my walls, my walls are white btw. I have a dark wood bed, vanity, nightstand, and bookcase. I am getting a white desk, and a white mini bookcase or storage bench for my school work (haven't decided yet, im home schooled.) And i am painting my TV stand white. I wanted to get cream colored stuff but that didn't work out.

I was thinking the main colors in my room could be turquoise with accents of another color maybe a dark pink or raspberry. (y'all can choose other colors.) Also should I have another accent color of white or black?

How much does a two-bedroom apartment in Vancover?
Q. How much would it approximately cost for a two bedroom apartment/condo in Vancouver?
I'm not looking for anything fancy, but nothing old, slum-like either and the neighborhood should be safe enough to roam freely at night and shouldn't be too far from downtown. I'm interested in Fairview or Burnaby.

What would be the price range for an apartment like that? (to rent and to buy respectively)

A. Renting a 2-bedroom apartment in Burnaby will set you back at least $1100 per month. The rents in Vancouver go up from there.
Condos would cost you around $300,000 as a minimum in Burnaby. In Vancouver the prices will be over $400,000.

What are the cheapest and most affordable Canadian university an international student can apply to?
Q. I am a Lebanese student willing to study in Canada. What is the cheapest university that I can apply to?

A. In addition to the above answers, I will directly suggest a university for you to look into.

Winnipeg has 2 universities:

-The University of Winnipeg (Primarily Undergrad)
-The University of Manitoba (Offers a wide variety of graduate and professional programs (i.e. Medicine) in addition to Undergrad programs, those undergrad programs including Nursing, Social Work, and Engineering).

The University of Winnipeg is always rated as one of the top primarily undergraduate schools in Canada.

Winnipeg has the best of both worlds. Tuition is affordable and reasonable, although not the lowest in the country, AND so is the cost of living. Together, this makes Winnipeg a viable otion.

Although Winnipeg is not as large as Vancouver or Toronto (Winnipeg has about 700,000 people), it does have many parks (Assinaboine Park is top notch, and has a zoo) , cultural events (i.e. Folklorama), theatres, restaurants, and places to explore. The Forks, Corydon, and Osbourne Village are trendy places to walk, shop, and eat. St. Boniface, St. Vital Park, and Wellington Crescent are beautiful ares for walking in the Sumemr.

Winnipeg is generally very safe as long as you avoid the "bad" areas...like any other larger city. When you move, people will usually show you where to avoid going (i.e. The West end, North end, Downtown at night, etc.).

Winnipeg has managed to avoid the HUGE boom in increased renting costs, although housing prices have increased. Renting a 1 bedroom apartment in Winnipeg may set you back $475-$650 depending on which area you live, but that same apartment in Vancouver, Saskatoon (huge increase in rent in the last year), or Toronto may cost you $800-$1200.

Winnipeg also have a very strong immigrant community as well. I am not sure how many Lebanese people reside there, but you may be able to find out more information on the Internet. Winnipeg is known as being "cultural friendly". Winnipeg has many ethnic restaurants and events. Even though you are just visiting, perhaps this would appeal to you.

If you are looking for excitement, then yes, be prepared to spend big money and go to UBC, McGill, Laval, or University of Toronto. These are located in Provinces with the "big" major cities.

But if you are willing to give a good sized city on the Prairies a shot (if does get very cold in the Winter!), then Winnipeg is a good choice.

The key to liking Winnipeg is to go out and explore it. There is lots to offer if you know where to look.

Right now you need to go the websites of the different schools you are considering. They will usually tell you how much each credit hour costs. If not, call. Then look up apartments in that area and rank them. You need to find a place that offers BOTH decent tuition, AND a lower cost of living. Also, some schools allow scholorships for International Students. Look into that. The University of Regina caters to IN students. U of R is also a nice school if you don't mind living in a smaller city (200,000). Renting costs have gone up in Regina, but they are not as bad as Saskatoon. Regina is a pretty, very friendly little city.

Good luck with your choice!

New guitar or new Amp?
Q. I have a B.C Rich Warlock and a Little bitty marshal amp.MG series.
I was wondering whether I should pick up a new guitar or a new amp to get a better sound quality (I am a decent musician, just my gear is lacking)

A. It all depends. Are you gonna try and play in a band, or just sit at home and play? What style of music do you like, or do you want to sound like? What's your price range? Do you want a versatile guitar, or one geared toward a certain type of music?

Your guitar has almost nothing to do with your sound. It's your pickups. When looking for a new guitar, you need to find one that feels right, and that is built with quality wood and electronics and hardware. You want it to last you a few years, but one that's comfortable is the #1 thing to look for. The pickups can always be swapped out to change your sound, and doing that is MUCH cheaper than buying a new guitar. A pickup swap with decent pickups can run you around $150 for two humbuckers. Dimarzio, EMG and Seymour Duncan are a few of my favorite companies.

Some good all around guitars are Schecter C-1+, PRS, Gibson LP's.

Some that have their own style and sound are Hollow Bodies or strats

Amps are a whole other thing. Once you figured out what guitar and pickup combo you want, then it's time for the amp. If you use a crappy amp, with real nice pickups, you're still gonna get a bad sound. Tube amps are awesome, but need to be turned to high volumes to get that rich tone that they are known for. I would recommend one if you're gonna be in a band. Mesa Mark IV's are great, but they just got discontinued after like 17 years or so. I have one, and they are very versatile, in that they can be used for jazz, or metal.

Marshall MG's are just about the worst rated amps on the planet. They sound like mud. If you play with a drummer, you won't cut through the cymbals. If you play with another guitar player, you won't hear anything but loud nonsense from either guitar. It will basically just ruin your hearing, and shake the house.

A nice tube amp, for live performances, should be somewhere between 35 to 100 watts... but 100 watts is overkill. Mine goes to 85 watts, and can be cut down to 35, 50 and 70 watt intervals. I can barely get it to 4 or 5 on the master volume when it's at the 85 watt setting. You can still find 1 to 15 watt tube amps, which can still get a decent volume to them, but can be used for studio, or bedroom volumes. Infact, there is a company called Blackstar that has a decent 5 watter for only $399 on musiciansfriend.com I have no clue how they sound, but they have great reviews.

If you live in an apartment, you can look at POD's... they don't have great tone, but you can get so many different sounds and effects from them, not to mention the ability to record on to your computer.

If you still want a solidstate, you can check out Roland cubes. They are pretty decent. Marshall amps aren't my thing. The only ones I like are the 80's tube amps.

If you want a metal tone, you can get a Peavey 6505, or if you save up $5000, you can get the ultimate Diezel stack.

Cheaper to build a playset on your own, buy a starter kit, or just buy the whole thing and be done with it?
Q. I have nine little cousins (all girls), a boy is due in August, who spend the night with my husband and I about every 8 weeks or so. Where we use to live, there was a swing set that was left behind by the previous owners, they all loved to play on. I want to get them another one for our new house, but I am not sure how to get the best bang for the buck. I have found a couple at Wal-Mart that are reasonable, and they have almost everything the girls would want. They are $399-$599. My question is, would it be cheaper to buy one of those and be done with it, or is it better to buy a starter kit like from Home Depot/Lowes, or just buy the lumber and start building it like I wanting it with buying the equipment from Home Depot/Lowes? I figured if I did this it could be for all their birthdays this year; I did a bedroom at our house for them at Christmas two years ago and they loved that.

A. It depends on how much your time building it is worth and if you have the tools to do it. You will still need to buy lumber with a starter kit. Some kits come with drill bits and hole gages.
It depends on your skill and if you have time to do it and if you have a helper .
