What is a great way to decorate my really small apartment?

lunagirlpr

Answer
For one thing, remember when making purchases that you are not going to be in this small space forever. Also remember...dual purpose! Some footstools have a removable top for storage inside and provide an additional seat for guests. Instead of trying to crowd in a small sofa and small chair, why not go ahead and invest in a good sofa that can go onto your next place and wait for the chair? Instead, make some large cushy overstuffed pillows that can be used for seating or stacked in the corner when not in use? If it is indeed a very tiny place, why not use an interesting old trunk in front of the sofa (more storage space) with a large tray on top? There are also some nice corner entertainment units at Walmart that can also house your stereo system, dvds and cds along with books and other things. In a small space, I'd look for an interesting floor lamp for next to the sofa instead of trying to make room for tables and lamps. Use the extra space instead for a large potted plant. Again, since the walls are probably going to be white or another neutral shade, budget allowing, try to invest in a large framed art piece with lots of color to balance out the scale of the room. As long as one basic color scheme flows from room to room, you shouldn't feel limited to pastels or drab colors.

You might think of a bistro table set designed for a patio in the eating area, use some wrought iron pieces and grape ivy to create a little grotto effect, and use it on a terrace or balcony in a later dwelling. If there's a "bar" area, you'd do better to leave it open (no bar stools) and maybe sit a plant there instead.

As for the kitchen area, since it's probably visable from the livingroom, keep the counter uncluttered and use maybe one or two decorative yet funcional items on top (a colorful set of mixing bowls to hold real fruit or vegetable, a basket filled with rolled up tea towels or napkins and silverware.

Even tho the bath is probably small, you can still add a few spa touches like scented candles and hand towels. If room allows, place as large a basket as possible near the tub with rolled up bath towels, jars of bath salts and sponges. Leave under the sink for the hair dryers and necessary items you don't want to leave out on the vanity.

Your bedroom, tho a multipurpose area should be your haven. Choose colors soothing to you...not necessarily pastels, but colors that make you feel good. Same rule of thumb here. Keep it to a minimum, but use the same concepts as in the other rooms. If you can get away with a bed, armoire, and bedside table, nothing says you have to have alot of different pieces. Use vaccum storage bags under the bed for out of season clothing, baskets and organizers in your closet to create more space and use the extra room for decorative things you really love.

Make it as fun and funky as you like. It's supposed to be an expression of your personality and your lifestyle, and you're only going to have a first place once! Enjoy!!

MRJ

I am working on a project with my daughter, what is the setting of her poems? Be specific please.

Answer
Different poems of hers have different settings. One is set in a grassy field, one in a horse-drawn carriage, one in a dying woman's bedroom, one in a cemetery; some have multiple settings, such as a cold landscape in one part and an ocean in another. Are there specific ones you're working on?

What are some young adult books that are so good you can't put down?

i wanna ho

I am going to Border's and the library today and I can never find anything. I never know what to look for because there are just so many books there :) So what do you recommend for young adult/teen books that are really great?
Also, if you can, please include why it is good or a little of what it is about. I always get tons of recommendations but have no idea what type of books they are.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: Set in the future in a country that requires two kids from each of its twelve districts to be sent into an arena to compete in the Hunger Games. To lose is to die and there can be only one winner. Katniss volunteers to go in place of her younger sister with no hope of ever coming home. A very suspenseful, deep, thought-provoking story.

Peeps by Scott Westerfeld: a vampire story, but not. Vampirism in this book is an STD that turns you into a flesh-eating beast.

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray: Gemma is sent to a boarding school after her mother's death where she learns about a very dark and dangerous power that she has.

Beastly by Alex Flinn: a modern day Beauty and the Best with a twist.

The Mediator by Meg Cabot: Suze is a girl who can see ghosts and consequently falls in love with the very hot one living in her bedroom. Hilarious and sarcastic at the same time as being dark.

Sucks to be Me by Kimberly Pauley: When sixteen-year-old Mina is forced to take a class to help her decide whether or not to become a vampire like her parents, she also faces a choice between her life-long best friend and the boy she has a crush on versus new friends and possible boyfriends in her mandatory "vampire lessons."

You Are So Undead to Me by Stacie Jay: Megan Berry, a Carol, Arkansas, high school student who can communicate with the Undead, must team up with her childhood friend Ethan to save homecoming from an army of flesh-hungry zombies.

Thicker than Water by Karla Jablonski:Coping with her mother's cancer makes seventeen-year-old Kia feel out of place everywhere until she is drawn into the goth-vampire club scene, where she finds acceptance and one gorgeous, popular guy who might offer escape.

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantasky:Seventeen-year-old Jessica, adopted and raised in Pennsylvania, learns that she is descended from a royal line of Romanian vampires and that she is betrothed to a vampire prince, who poses as a foreign exchange student while courting her.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld:In Tally's world, a 16th birthday brings an operation, transforming one from a repellent Ugly to an attractive Pretty. Turning Pretty is all Tally has ever wanted. Her friend Shay would rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally must make a terrible choice.

Bloodline by Kate Cary: It's been 35 years since the demise of Dracula. When 19-year-old John Shaw returns from fighting in World War I, he is haunted by nightmares--not only of the ravages of war, but of the brutal, almost superhuman feats of his commander, Quincey Harker.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryans:In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best, and the fence that protects her village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth must remain intact. After fence is breached, Mary's world is thrown into chaos, and she must choose between her village and her future.

Unwind by Neal Susterman: In a future world where those between the ages of thirteen and eighteen can have their lives "unwound" and their body parts harvested for use by others, three teens go to extreme lengths to uphold their beliefs--and, perhaps, save their own lives.

The Pact by Jodi Picoult: Until the phone calls came at 3:00 A.M. on a November morning, the Golds and their neighbors, the Hartes, had been inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone when their teenage children, Chris and Emily, began showing signs that their relationship was moving beyond that of lifelong friends. But now seventeen-year-old Emily has been shot to death by her beloved and devoted Chris as part of an apparent suicide pact -- leaving two devastated families stranded in the dark and dense predawn, desperate for answers about an unthinkable act and the children they never really knew.

What Happened to Cass McBride by Gails Giles: After his younger brother commits suicide, Kyle Kirby decides to exact revenge on the person he holds responsible. Cass McBride has only a walkie talkie to save her when she is buried alive.

13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher: When high school student Clay Jenkins receives a box in the mail containing thirteen cassette tapes recorded by his classmate Hannah, who committed suicide, he spends a bewildering and heartbreaking night crisscrossing their town, listening to Hannah's voice recounting the events leading up to her death

Maximum Ride by James Patterson: After the mutant Erasers abduct the youngest member of their group, the "birdkids," who are the result of genetic experimentation, take off in pursuit and find themselves struggling to understand their own origins and purpose.

Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan: Darren Shan is an ordinary schoolboy who enjoys hanging out with his three best friends. Then one day they stumble across an invitation to visit the Cirque Du Freak, a mysterious freak show. As if by destiny, Darren wins a ticket, and what f

I am including links to 2 bedroom sets here and also a picture of living room furniture like rugs, couches and loveseat. I would like to know what I should offer as a price if I have to purchase these ? I just purchased a house and would like to purchase the furniture as well. I think it would also save the seller trouble for disassembling, transporting and assembling. Thanks very much for your time. Also you can specify the price of items and refer to 1,2,3 for which picture. I live in Atlanta, GA.

Answer
How much is a new double wide trailer with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms?

any where from 75K and up

And how much does it cost to get it set up and allthat good stuff?

depends upon whom you hire - how far the home has to be driven - and what the local laws are on the foundations or hurricane tie downs

What would i have to do to be able to buy it if its my first home?

get financing at the bank

And can you pay monthly like rent to own?

not to my knowledge - it just like buying an already existing home - you need to have decent credit

Is it worth it to hire professional movers for a small move or to do it yourself?

lyndzmaire

My husband and I are moving from our duplex (much like the size of a large apartment) to a house in the immediate local area. We have the basics: living room set, dinning table, bedroom set (1), washer and dryer, and other small furniture peices (computer desk, etc). Is it worth it to hire professional movers or to do it ourselves. And what would be the typical cost for a small move?

Answer
Depends on how the professional moveers charge you - either by the hour or by the weight of things they are moving and the distance they are moving it.

I've moved twice in the past 12 years and did it both ways. With professional movers, you get people who know how to lift and move large items most effectively. They will know how to pack them and how to cushion them to prevent them from being damaged during the move - and have those items on their trucks. If you do it yourself, you will have to buy these items.

Movers that are paid by the hour will give you all manner of excuses for not being in a rush. In my first move, I was going across town into the boondocks from a downtown house. It was mostly interstate driving and they followed me. Never saw a truck go so slow in all my life! I kept trying to get them to at least do the speed limit of 55 and they kept falling back. They wouldn't go faster than 40 the whole way and then they would brake at every traffic light even while it was green. They gave me some sorry excuse that they had trouble with their brakes and wanted to be sure they could stop if the light changed - to avoid jostling my furniture.

Professional movers have some of the sorriest rules I have ever heard of. They wouldn't take a folding bed because it wasn't in a box. They wouldn't take my bikes because they weren't in a box. They wouldn't take a mattress because it wasn't in a box. They wouldn't take a western saddle becuase it wasn't in a box. You get the picture. And when I suggested they load up my dog house - you got it - had to be in a box.

The advantage of hiring professional movers is that it will save you from personal injury such as a back strain. It's common when people try to move furniture when they really aren't experienced with that kind of activity. But if they lose something or neglect to get all your things off the truck, you will play heck trying to get them to admit they made a mistake - much less recover your missing item.

The first time I moved, I wanted the professional movers to take the things that were too awkward for me to lift or put in my car - like my dog house, bikes and folding bed. We've already been down that road.

I wanted to save money. I knew how long it took to get from point A to point B. I hadn't counted on the moving company hiring slowest drivers in the galaxy.

If the movers take your stuff, they will call for aid and move all your things into a second truck to get your things to the destination, no matter what. If you are moving yourself and have a breakdown, you are on your own. Do you really want to leave all your possessions in the back of a truck while it is in the repair shop?

If you don't own a pickup truck but have a friend offering you the use of theirs, don't do it. Go to U-Haul or Ryder and rent one. What your friend isn't considering is that heavy and large furntiure can dent the bed or the side of the truck if it the item is even remotely off balance in the truck. The legs of furniture can scrape the paint right off the truck bed. And even though you might think that a truck is a truck, this is not the case. Do you really know what your furniture weighs and what the truck is capable of carrying - safely? Trust me on this - rent a truck designed to move furniture and household items.

On my second move - I went three states away. Professional movers were a necessary evil. No matter what the estimate was, be sure and have MORE on hand because they will always gouge you and then try to make some sorry excuse as to why it cost more than the estimate. And don't try to pay the extra with a traveler's check. You wouldn't believe how many movers have never heard of them and don't know what they are - much less accept them. I insisted they were all I had.

There is no typical cost for any move. It all depends on who you hire to do it and how they charge you. Some have a flat hourly rate while others have a flat rate for the estimated weight of the items you have - while others will take the truck to weigh station to get written documentation of the weight of the truck with all your things in it.

If you can get a local mover who never goes out of the state, go with that company. They want to be home for dinner and they will work faster than a national mover.

I am looking for a corner bedroom set, like the one that my sister and I had in the late 70's. There are two twin beds which each bump up against a corner table unit. They came with fitted covers and back bolster cushions that when on the beds, made them look like sofas. Our corner table had enough space for one of the beds to slide 1/2 way underneath, to allow for more space in our room. It also had an AM/FM radio - woo hoo!

I have searched and searched on-line but have not found anything that even closely resembles this retro bedroom set. Thanks to anyone who can help!

I live in St. Louis, MO.

Any suggestions from people with experience with this kind of thing would be gratefully appreciated.

I have four Barrister bookcases, a huge African Mahogany dining table with ten matching chairs, a solid wood cherry executive desk, a mahogany bedroom set with two twin bed frames and two dressers plus a few other pieces.

Look in you local phone book and visit some of their sales. Ask the people that hired them. They may even have references you could check. I'd go back where the sale was and ask. Check the local BBB too. Good luck.

This is for long term rent obviously. I would prefer it closer to the city center and if anyone could also tell me how much a 1 bedroom would be that would be good too.

Answer
A two bed is classed as a three room apartment and when you see the prices, you might consider a studio (1 room) or 1 bed (2 room) instead.

Rents have dropped a little since the exodus of expats over the last couple of years, but a renovated shoebox will still set you back $1500 a month. I personally like Tsvetnoy Boulevard Area, but could never afford to live there.

How can I stay and work in Ireland?

taylorpsu

One of my friends and I are planning on moving to Ireland for a gap year. Where would be the best place for us to move? We would like to find jobs and rent an apartment. We are looking for a fairly cheap area. It does not matter to use if we are in a city or not but we would like to be relatively close to some fun nightlife. Anything you could give us would be great. If you know about any place to 19 year olds could work that would be amazing also. Also I was looking into going to university there or taking a few classes so any suggestions on that would be nice too.

Answer
Well done for wishing to try out this beautiful island!
You could find yourselves a bit spoiled for choice. There are many places to consider so you may want to research each to make your minds up. The good thing is, you can get around the whole island fairly easily and you wherever you set up base, be sure to visit all the main culture centres.
All cities here have their good bits and bad, cheap and upmarket. Here in Belfast where I live is fantastic, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
If you are not too fussy there are furnished apartments or 2 bedroom houses for as little as £300 p.c.m.
However, furnished might mean just a sofa and a single bed in an otherwise empty house so always check exactly what you're paying for and you can often negotiate your lease to run month to month.
There are 2 Universities in Belfast you might want to check out. The first is Queens University, which is located close to the city centre. It has so much going on there, you should look it up. The building itself is beautiful but I'm biased because I went there!
The other is the University of Ulster. There are campus' around Northern Ireland, but again the Belfast campus is in the city centre. Student life in Belfast can be wild at times but it is what you
make it. I am proud to say Belfast is one of the safest ( yes, safest!! ) cities in the U.K. and Ireland.
As for work, all the major supermarkets absolutely love students so that shouldn't be a problem! Pick up an application form from customer services like I did. And if like me your luck is in, you'll start 3 days later!
Hope some of this has been helpful. Belfast loves to welcome people from all across the globe and friendlier warmer people you will not meet.
Its a great base to explore the entire island. You can get to Dublin in about 1hr 30. Cork is beautiful, my wife lived there for 5 years. If you like fishing, Galway and Mayo are fantastic. Fermanagh has loads to do. Basically everywhere on this island has something so pick a good base and take in as much of it as you can. I suppose I should mention flights to Europe are cheap from Ireland so you can always nip off to Paris, Rome or Madrid for a weekend too. I'm telling you, you will not want to leave these shores once you arrive. I know. I moved here from the Netherlands in 1995 and haven't looked back!
Best of luck and I wish you and yours all the very best!

White and Black bedroom decorating ideas?

Im going to be in grade eight and im moving into a new house. My bedroom will be themed black and white. Is there a color that would be a good accent for my themed ones? What are some decorating ideas, or things i could buy for it?

Answer
Black and white with an accent color is one of the easiest themes to pull off. What I usually suggest is black & white plus your favorite color (two or three shades of the color - maximum). If I were doing this for me, I'd pick teal or turquoise or a royal blue as those are my favorites :) and I'd go with a black & white patterned bedding - just NOT zebra print as I feel it has been done to death in recent years.

Pick black or white for your furniture or go for a dark wood.

Wall color could be a light to medium gray OR a light to medium shade of your third color. If you use gray for the walls, then use your third color for accent pieces like curtains, throws or pillows. If you use a darker shade of paint, then use mainly lighter shades of the same color for your accents with maybe one item the same shade as the paint. If you use a lighter shade of paint, then do the reverse.
Here's a nice turquoise/teal for instance:
http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6944-pool-blue/

or gray:

http://www.target.com/p/room-essentials-turquoise-rose-reversible-comforter/-/A-14432001#prodSlot=medium_1_1

Target is great for black & white bedding and they also have a great selection of black & white photo posters that are reasonably priced. With a black & white themed bedroom you can use black, white or silver toned frames for your posters/pictures. Depending upon the size you need, you may be able to obtain frames to fit your color scheme at your local dollar stores.

Hope this gives you some ideas to work with and helps you out.

Need decorating ideas for black bedroom furniture-please helpl?

tulsanurse

I have a small bedroom with a black bedroom set-queen bed, nightstand, dresser, and armoire. The walls are white with tan carpet. I went out and purchased a sateen black down comfort with a set of soft pink sheets but Im not sure Im going to be able to use it because there is just way way to much black. Can anyone suggest any ideas. Im just wanting a room that is pretty soft and romantic. I love the new furniture but I dont have any idea on how to decorate with it. Im not a "red" person, its never been one of my favorite colors. Any ideas on whether i should return the comforter and sheets and start over? I have no accents pieces yet so Im starting fresh.

Answer
pink works with black, tan works with pink, but I am not sure if you want to try all three. Maybe pull back on the pink to small items like alarm clock, bookends and such. Tan or white would be the best bet for the rest of the room. If you can paint, try a tan for 3 walls, leave 1 white and any trim white( paint is cheap and if you are renting be sure to ask first). You may want to use a throw blanket and some light decorative pillows on top of the bed to break up the black and try table runners or doylies on top of your cases. But if you are tight on money, Return the comforter and sheets to try something different.Maybe plain black and white will be pleasing, kinda go art-deco.

How can you maximise space in a 7'x8' bedroom without a loft bed?

I'm moving into a new house, and have had to take the smallest bedroom. We won't really be able to afford new furniture so I'll have to make do with the bed I have (a single with drawers underneath for storage) How can I maximise space for study and relaxing?

Answer
A bedroom 7 feet by 8 feet is a real challenge. Put the bed against the back wall and the side wall. Next to the bed put a desk about 4 feet wide.

On the desk, place a lamp on the end close to the bed so you can use it to read by when you're in bed and close enough so you can turn it on and off.

Across from the bed about 2 feet away from the desk, put your dresser, about 4 feet high so you can put a television set on top of it and watch it from the bed.

Have everything the same color, except for a bright toss pillow om the bed and your wall hangings, posters or pictures. This last is very important. Make sure they are bright and fun to look at. Travel posters are useful for this. If the walls are a pearl white, the furniture will be best painted the same color, the headboard, the desk, and the dresser. Bedspread and curtains should be white or gray.

Or paint your walls a soft yellow, and use the same color for the headboard, desk, dresser. The bedspread and the curtains can be the same color or a little bit darker.

The other choice for color schemes that can work out nicely are soft gray and taupe. Just remember to keep everything the same color, just varying the intensity.

Where can I get cheap things to decorate my sons room?

Consentida

Ok I'm moving to a new apartment and my son is going to finally get his own bedroom. He just turned 4 years old and I have no idea where to look for cheap things to decorate his room. His favorite characters are disney cars and thomas the train..me and my husband are on a budget...and we all know disney cars and thomas are not cheap. so any ideas?

Answer
I would avoid the actual Disney charecter stuff. Not only is it a little expensive, there is a good change he'll complain it is too babyish in two years. Plus, he already had toys with those charecters.

To save money, get stuff you could see in an 8 year old's room.

Bedding I think works for a 4 year old and an older boy:

For wall art, posters make a big impression. I reccomend picking posters that will fit in frames the same color as the furniture. That way later on you can just change the posters.

If the furniture is dark brown in his room, you can get this frame set for $30 http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=16566594&RN=88 You could get these:

What is a better deal for my husband and I on choosing a bed?

There is a queen size bed that has a lot a drawers on it that cost $1,299.00 plus tax. There is a very fluffy memory foam mattress that cost $999.00 and the bed is $899.00. I like the mattress. When you get up you can see the mattress slowly rise. The mattress is almost free with the purchase of the bed or you could say the bed is almost free with the purchase of the mattress. There is nothing else that comes with it. All other pieces sold separately. There are a total of 14 drawers on the bed. I don't like the bed but my husband really does. I don't think it's for a married couple and the drawers on it are not my style.
The other queen size bed Is a better quality to me. It is $1,499.00 and it comes with a beautiful dresser and mirror and a chest and also free mattress and box-spring. It's very thick and has beautiful sculptures and art carvings. The mattress has the option to upgrade the free mattress for a nicer mattress for $100 or $200 for the best mattress. It is not memory foam mattress. But I can buy a memory foam for the bed somewhere and save money. Then my husband would still be able to get memory foam. I don't want to boss everything Or count his opinion out. I don't like that other bed. He says whatever I pick but he really likes the drawers on the bed. We are buying our first home next year. I know the king size bedroom set that I want cost almost $3,000.00 but we have a budget to stick to for our huge down payment on our home. Is it fair for me to pick the bedroom sets both times? Whatever is picked will eventually go in our spare bedroom when we move. What should I do?
The beds are made from very good wood. The bed that has the drawers is one of the newer bed which doesn't require a box the newer bed which doesn't require a box spring. There is no way to kick the drawers under the bed. The foundation goes around the bed. There are no spaces to put anything but clothes or items in the drawers.

Answer
I don't know to much about beds, but in those drawers you should have the possibility to put the bed linen. Beside, it's not a good idea to buy something that one of you don't like. You should leave these options and search for something that both of you like. This way you will avoid any conflict between you and your husband.
It's not the end of the world, search for something else, every time it's a better option.
By the way, if you would like art for your new home, I work with a shop on etsy where you can find some nice paintings https://www.etsy.com/shop/DLaurasGallery . Thanks :)

What is the cheapest, getting movers to move my stuff, or uhaul?

KiD SiStEr

I am just a roomate, so all i have is 1 bedroom set, and a couple of boxes. I also own a volkswagen jetta. I am moving from Orlando, FL to Los Angeles, CA. will it be better for me to ship my stuff and then drive my car to LA. or is it cheaper to get a uhaul truck and hitch my car to the back?

Answer
For my date I used 4-12-11.
All rates exclude taxes, fees, insurance, optional equipment, or fuel.
-----
Fuel Mileage- The small trucks towing your car with your belongings in them should get between 8-10 miles per gallon. For figuring out your cost I would go with the 8 MPG. Using mapquest its roughly 2500 miles from Orlando to LA. So 2500 divided by 8 = 312 gallons. So at 4.00 per gallon you would be looking at 1250 in fuel.
-----
For this long of a trip, I would only use the auto transport [car carrier] - My reason being that with all 4 tires off the ground it is much better on your Jetta, the tow dolly would only raise up the front 2 tires and the rear tires would just roll which would seriously wear your rear tires up.
-----
Budget Truck
Smallest truck that can tow is the 16'
16' - 1136.70 - Car Carrier 364.00
Rates include up to 9 days of use and unlimited miles.
-----
Penske Truck
Smallest Truck that can two is the 16'
16' - 1235.70 - Car Carrier - 389.00
Rates include up to 10 days of use and unlimited miles.
-----
U-Haul
All their trucks can tow, however I wouldn't recommend towing with the 10'. The 10 trucks only four tires. Where the larger ones have 6 tires. [ 4 rear tires] which means it can haul more weight and also has larger brakes.
Rates include up to 9 days of use and 3027 miles.
10' - 1362 - 14' - 1423 - 17' - 1544 - Car Carrier 360
-----
So I would contact a few moving compaines to see what they charge you with everything. Make sure you check the BBB first and also just check them out online for any kind of problems in the past. If you use a mover you could have them transport your car to LA and you could fly if you wanted to but also figure in that cost.

I'm thinking of moving to Miami. I'd like to hear from others that have moved there.?

I'm thinking of maybe moving to Miami. I currently live in chicago, and I'm sort of itching to get out and try something different. Im a 26 yo, single male. I have been to Miami before, and I really liked it, mainly for its lush tropical landscape and the different culture. I'm curious to hear from other people that have moved there if they were happy moving there, or if they came to regret their decision (and why)

I'm curious to hear from other people that have moved there (especially from very different places like chicago). Did it take you a while to adjust to living there? What it what you had hoped it would be? Are people friendly? Overall, do you feel safe in Miami? I've heard there are some bad areas of the city, but it Miami cant possibly be more crime ridden than chicago is.

Also, what it the cost of living like? Right now, I pay 1700 for a 1 bedroom in chicago, but I would like to find a nice apartment in a safe area in miami for around 1200 a month. What areas would you recommend living in? Is 1200 a reasonable amount to expect to pay in rent? I am a fairly quiet person, and while I enjoy Miami beach for its beauty, I wouldnt want to live near that craziness.

Any input from Miami locals would be appreaciated! Thanks!

Answer
I've lived here in the Miami area for two years and have mixed feelings. I should point out that back in the mid-90s I also spent 2 years living in Orlando, so this isn't my first rodeo in the Sunshine State.

I think my biggest gripe about Florida is the job market; it's not diversified enough (retail and services), the wages are too low, and finding jobs is too difficult. I know that people would say that the job market is bad everywhere, but Florida has a couple of things that set it apart. Just like with California, the population here grows too damn fast and job growth just isn't able to keep up. Every week you have people moving into the state (either folks from up north looking to live in a warmer climate, or Cubans and other immigrants drifting in with the tides). Obviously when those people arrive, one of the first things they do is look for work. There just aren't enough new jobs created for all the waves of people that keep moving into the state, and that's a big problem.

The cost of living is high, yes (as you already seem to know) and I accept this living in a state with such fast population growth, but what drives me crazy is that the wages don't keep pace. I had this exact same problem when I lived in Orlando back in '95. At that time the only jobs I could find paid barely above minimum wage.

How should I spray paint this?

.

My headboard has a glossy like coat on it, but Its fake wood as far as I know. How should I begin spray painting it. If it's fake, do I still have to strip and sand the top part, then spray paint it? Or can I just go ahead and spray over it? Is that all really necessary for real wood either? I'm trying to paint them white.

Thanx in advance!

Answer
You need to sand the gloss off first. I did my daughters whole bedroom set once, I used a Stone paint on the headboard and the tops of the dressers. and taped off other areas and painted different colors(sea-green and coral) we went for a kinda old miami color scheme. After the stone paint dries, you can still paint it a different color, the texture is nice because it feels like stone. I found spraying to be the easiest way to go. that brushing stuff is work, spraying gives you more options too, There are Stone, Metal, High Gloss ,Satan, Flats, Antiquing, distressed and so on. Just be sure to give it time to dry, and when you are done, set it in the Sun and let the UV's harden to paint quicker. Many people don't know this trick.

How is your bedroom set up?

I am redecorating my own bedroom [only I live there] and I'm wondering how all of you have their bedroom set up. For example, I'm torn between having my bed or desk next to the window...

Answer
My bedroom is so random right now do you really want to know? Haha. Ok my bed is against the wall, tv infront of bed against the other wall, dresser across the other wall, a chair in the middle of my room (it's just there for no reason), an old school desk beside the tv (I swear I used it in like 3rd grade), and scattered books and movies on the floor near my bed.

I like to decorate, once in a great while I'll get the motivation to change a room and I'm great at it.

You should have your desk next to the window so when you think about something you can look out and imagine all the endless possibilities.

What's the best way to go about selling furniture?

Red

I'm thinking about selling my furniture before I move. I have tons of stuff: queen bedroom set, trundle bed, desk, dinning room table, kitchen table, couches, coffee tables and end tables.

Answer
Selling furniture is really tricky, because you will have to ask much less than the furniture is worth, and then not even get the asking price.
Sometimes it is better to donate it to a non profit, then you will get a tax write off that might be even more than the cash you would get from selling it.
If you do want to sell it, give yourself plenty of time......it is hard to sell things in a rush.
I would suggest using Craigslist.org

Be sure to take pictures of all the things you are selling, then put them on a photo sharing site, then include a link to it in your craigslist add. Also include a couple of photos in the ad itself.

Next, be prepared to have your time wasted by non serious inquiries, people who stand you up (say they will come to buy the furniture, then don't), people who want to haggle you down to an unrealistically low price, and worst, people who have unrealistic expectations, like for you to ship it to their house.

Be very clear in your expectations: cash only, pick up only.

Also, don't be afraid to throw in a freebie or two.... for example, if someone buys your couch, throw in an end table or a lamp.

Selling furniture is hard, time consuming, and you might not sell all of it.

So keep your expectations realistic, give yourself plenty of time, and don't let yourself get screwed.

Need a bedroom re arranging done? HELP!?

Aphrodite-

To start out, I have A LOT of furniture. A larger desk, large book shelf, two dressers, a stool, and a single bed. I went from a big, big room to when I moved, a SMALL room!
My family is moving again in a year, but that's to long! I want to know the best way to re-arrange, that is space efficient? and some cleaning tips!

Answer
You should draw out a blueprint on some paper. It does not have to be artistic whatsoever. Measure the length and width of your new room and then use a ruler to draw a box representing your room. Make it miniaturized to scale (i.e. if it's 10ft, draw it 10mm or inches).

Here's some examples:
http://www.christineburkeinteriors.com/shop/images/
calvin%20bedroom%20blueprint(1).jpg
(note: I had to break up that link so it fits)

http://blog.havertys.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/StyleBlueprint.jpg

Now, on seperate paper, draw out things like your bed and other big furnishings you want in your room. Draw them to scale like you did the room. Cut each of those out and label them. Now you can organize them around the box shape you drew as your room to figure out the best way to set up all your stuff.

Good luck~ =D

Haverty's Furniture in Dallas?

You Asked.

I found a bedroom suite that I love, but Haverty's doesn't have items in stock, their stores are simply showrooms, therefor there is a delivery charge to get the item from Dallas to the house. I live in East Texas and will gladly make the trek if it saves on delivery charges... which I think are ridiculous considering Haverty's doesn't give you the option to pick it up for no charge or have it delivered for an additional charge.

Does anyone know if the warehouse is open to the public so we can buy the set and bring it home ourselves?

Does the warehouse have any "damaged" items?

And, can you tell me where the warehouse is at? As I said, I live in East Texas, and am not familiar with the stores around Dallas. I have searched on Yahoo and the Haverty's website, but the address of the warehouse does not pull up.

Thank you!!!

Answer
Try going through my store catalog. Store located in Fort Worth area. E-mail for prices of things ya like and will be sure to give a good deal and can have everything very fast.
Thanks,
Ted

I have a very tight budget, so DIY projects are definitely welcome. I have three light yellow walls and one light blue wall. It is a small bedroom-my furniture consists of a king sized bed, a dresser and a bookshelf (both of those are tall rather than wide-they take up less room that way).
I'm looking mainly for ideas of wall art. I don't have a headboard and was thinking of making one myself, but I don't know, since my room is already small it might make it appear smaller.
thanks!

Answer
you can get an 8' sheet of plywood, cover it with quilt batting on one side, stapled to the plywood on the other, and a few yards of a fabric that goes well with your other decor to cover the batting, again stapled to the other side. Lay longways on the floor behind the head of your bed for an instant, cheap headboard.
Another cheap idea for decor is to get a large canvas (oil painting type) and some colors you like, splash across the canvas and let dry. Instant art. Pretty cheap.
Make the most of the room you have with underbed storage bins.

Ideas for a teenage girl bedroom?

Shayla

I'm moving in a month and so that means new bedroom furniture!!

My idea is a bright colored room. Almost scene I guess?
So far I'm getting a new comforter, new curtains, a desk, a tv to hang on the wall, and light to put ariund the ceiling corner. Like christmas lights. And a body mirror.

I want to paint the walls two purple and two lime green but I'm not sure. .

Idk. What furniture should I get? I'm lost xD I've never gotten to pick my bedroom furniture out before ever.

Btw im 14 ill appriciate your help :)

Answer
Hi - first of all my love I wouldn't have two purple and two green - personally I would go for the green on 3 walls and the purple on your 'feature' wall - which should be the wall you have on your bed. The purple and green together is brilliant but you don't want too much purple on the wall. You could bring some more purple in with i.e. purple and green bed linen or just plain green or plain purple. Also the purple could come in say on your lime green walls.

Buy some remnants of fabric or you could even use a pillowcase that matches your bed linen and buy one or two - perhaps a plain and one patterned - then buy a couple of blank canvasses and cut to the size of the canvas with some overlap so you can tuck this at the back of the canvas and secure with a staple gun. Look at this idea:

http://itswrittenonthewalls.blogspot.ie/2011/08/diy-wall-art-scrapbook-paper-styrofoam.html

You could perhaps use a nice mirror above your desk/dressing table?

Also, you might like one or two of these wall decals, but please do not put too many on your wall otherwise it will be too much - and your mum will tell me off - lol :) Tell your mum these do not mark the wall when either you get fed up with them or want to change your room again! Here are some nice ones here:

http://www.wondrouswallart.com/wall-stickers/girls-bedroom

Or, a nice wall quote - again you could put something like either of these on the wall just above your bed or something like that?:

http://www.enchantingquotes.com/wall-quotes-teens.html

You are a lucky girl :) But I would still bear in mind how much this is costing!

So, I would say to you to go to Ikea - where their furniture is good quality a lot better than it used to be a few years ago and very good value. If I was you I would go with all white furniture. I would definitely have a chest of drawers with possibly 5 drawers in and then purchase a dressing table/desk that you can utilise for your homework and your studies! You will need a bedside table to put your drink and perhaps a clock on.

If you are lucky enough to have a new bed - perhaps go for one that already has storage drawers in or one that you could put boxes etc underneath for all your bits and bobs. So get plenty of nice boxes etc to put stuff in and these can always go nice and tidy under the bed if you have room or inside your wardrobe?

Here are some ideas:

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=Small+Storage

And.. perhaps if you don't put too much on your walls and you are short of storage - you could perhaps put a couple of LACK shelves on the wall (again in white) - which also come from Ikea - with 2 or 3 boxes on top - those nice coloured ones to match your room either in green or purple - although if you put any on your purple walls then try to get some nice green ones cos these will look nice against the purple!

Well, I hope I have given you plenty of ideas and good luck with your room and be happy getting it all done and make sure you keep it tidy :)

Hey much should sell my bedroom set for?

bedroom set $500 image
Q. I had it for little under 4 years, I bought it for around 2,500.
Bed- Headboard, Footboard, mattress
Dresser- Has 4 drows, very deep.
Nightstand- Two drows

All of these is very classy and is white. I don't know what type of wood but it is very strong.

Anyway, I'm trying to sell this and get enough money from it to by another bedset.

What is a reasonaly price for all of this?

Answer
Typically, I don't think bedroom furniture has a high resale value...that is to say, it doesn't sell "used" for nearly as much as you purchased it. I sold my white painted wood bedroom set (bed, desk, bedside, dresser) for $500 or so, but I was trying to get rid of it fast. Go on craigslist and see what others are going for. Always set the price high and let people negotiate down from there. Good Luck!

How to tell if furniture is of good quality?

pink

I found a set of furniture: queen sized headboard, dresser with mirror, smaller dresser and nightstand at a local place for $800 before taxes.

It looks like it's sturdy but I'm having second thoughts about it. Is there any way to tell if furniture is going to last or not?

Answer
Look closely at the construction, make sure its solid wood and not half wood, half mdf.before you commit to such a high price, check out craigslist or want ads,my brother just got a brand new king sized bedroom set for 500,retailed 4000! Also,if your paying in full ask if theres a discount,a lot of times they will give you one if you pay cash. And dont be afraid to ask questions,a lot of times sales people will steer you to better goods for less if your friendly.
