Two of my sons ages 5 & 8 share a room, they love dinosaurs, reptiles etc. and want this as a theme for their bedroom. I have several ideas in mind for the bedding, but would like to as a touch to the walls. They are white now and the carpet is tan which is helpful. All of the bedding sets I am considering are good colors one is tan/beige with dinosaurs, one is burgundy, and one is blue. What can i do to the walls to add character and pull form the bedding. I am also still looking for unique bedding, I have tried Target and The Company Store, you can go on line ans see what I'm talking about. I want a room that is not toddler like as my 5 year old acts like my 8 year old.

Where to buy really girly/colorful/pink stuff for my bedroom? I want my room to be girly and cute?

lalalala

I am going to move in a new house and I want my room to be super cute and girly. I LOVE hello kitty and anything that's cute and colorful/pink. Even those little stickers/hearts on the walls are good. Where do I buy stuff like that from? Like girly curtains, hello kitty decorations, etc.. any other ideas? I am 18.

At my old house, my room was boring and cluttered.
and don't say Wal-Mart.

Answer
Hey :]

First, you need to decide on the color you want to paint the walls. If I were you, I'd paint all the walls a light pink except for one wall - the accent wall - which I would paint grey, turquoise, white, anything that stands out from the pink. The accent wall should be the window wall, the wall with the closet, OR the longest wall in the room. You're choice. You also need to figure out the colors you wnat to use in your room. If you want it to be really girly, then light pinks, hot pinks, turqoise, lilacs, light greens, greys and silvers all look great, not to mention White.

Then, you should think about what kind of furniture you want in your bedroom. Maybe get everything in light cedar, or white wood ETC. If it's darker, you can always paint it. I think white furniture would really make it look clean and pretty, metal or chrome furniture would be my next choice. Try making a list of all the new furniture you want, and what you can do to your current furniture to make it fit in the room. For example: 1. Paint Dresser 2. Buy Bed Frame ETC. Don't forget to add comfortable furniture; at some point you'll have guests over, they want somewhere to sit. Add in some Egg Chairs, Bean Bag Chairs, or a Couch / Love Seat.

After that, you need to choose some bedding. You could probably get a little Hello Kitty throw blanket, to put on top of a pink or flowery bed-spread, with maybe pink or shiny sheets underneath. Try getting some fuzzy pillow cases, or turquoise pillow cases. Try accessorizing with lots of different colored throw pillows, as well as maybe a body pillow or two. Make it unique, YOUR room.

Then, you should start looking for all the other little stuff you want. For example, I love making collages and putting them in my room, my locker ETC. You could make one from pics of magazines, pics of you and friends, stuff offline, anything. You'll also want to make a list of all the little stuff you need on your desk. Maybe put a special scrap booking or diary in the middle, and then a bunch of pink or hello kitty pencil holders, paper clips, ETC. A calender would be a good idea, too.

If you want "girly" ideas, how about this:

1.) Canopies. You can hang one over your bed, and trust me it looks great. It's also great in the summer, if you find mosquitoes in your room a lot. They come in plain white, or colored. Try to get it to match one of the accent colors in your bedroom.

2.) Pillows. You'll need pillows for the chairs, the bed, your couch (if you have one), maybe just on the floor. You can mix and match colors, prints, textures and patterns, to make a really cute look. Get them in all the colors of your room and bed, maybe some in Hello Kitty ETC.

3.) Wall Murals / Decals. You can make a Hello Kitty or Flower mural on the wall, maybe about your bed or on the closet doors ETC, or you could add stick on decals. I think you can get the means to creat both at hardware stores, Home Depot, Canadian Tire ETC.

4.) Patchwork Curtains. I love Patchwork Curtains! You can buy them made like that, or make then yourself. Add in some sparkly colors, pinks, hello kitty prints, cheetah prints ETC. It looks adorable and it frames windows perfectly.

5.) Displays. If you have a special medal, trophy, favourite book, favourite drawing, precious earrings ETC, then you might want to display it on the wall. You can mount it, or put it in a case of a shelf. It makes the room feel sophisticated and personal at the same time. Or, if you have a designer dress ETC, then you could have it set up in the corner, on a hedless maniquan or something.

6.) Vanity / Dressing Table. Simply take an old - or new desk - and make it look pretty. So, paint it, add some pictures, whatever you want. Then, put a mirror or two on the desk, and then a close up mirror ETC. Put all your bath stuff, hair brush, nail polish and make up stuff there. Before bed, you can pick out what you're going to wear and put it there too.

7.) Names. You can have your name embroidered on a bean bag chair, pillows, painted on the wall, the windows, just about anywhere. It makes the room feel personal, and it adds a very elegant touch. You could dot an I or a J with a paw print, or heart if you have one.

If you want to email me, I can give you more ideas, but that's all I can fit into one answer. Remember, this is YOUR bedroom, no one elses. Make it personal, add in some pictures of friends, lots of comfy pillows, maybe a new stereo system or T.V. Don't worry about making it the perfect room acording to a magazine, just the perfect room acording to You.

I hope this helped, have fun decorating :)

Answer
Hi!

Brown is a neutral color, so basically, you can paint any color under the rainbow with it... it all depends on what you like. There are a few things to remember though, and I have a few suggestions... Hope this helps:

To have complete color harmony in any room, you need to have 3 colors: 1 dominant color (usually the walls), 1 medium color (usually the trim, molding, ceiling, furniture, etc.) and 1 accent color (usually decorative accents such as cushions, vases, throws, etc.). You can use the same color as your funiture as you do on an accent wall or all the walls... it depends on lots of things like your lighting, but we'll get to that later.

In decorating, black and white are not considered colors. White is the absence of all color. That's why you can match it with any color under the rainbow. Black is the mixture of all colors. That's why it too, can be mixed with any color under the rainbow. It's not necessary to have any white in a room, but it is very important that you have at least one black item: a vase, a picture frame, a throw rug, a cushion, a curtain rod, a lamp, etc.... you get the idea). The black will ground ALL of your colors together. So don't forget to add something black in your room.

What color of brown is your furniture: Black-brown (as in very dark espresso coffee), dark chocolate brown, etc. Since you didn't say, here are some color schemes that work with different types of brown furniture. The way to use them is for the 1st color = dominant 2nd color = medium and 3rd color = accent. Of course, you can use them in any other way you like, thought the ones listed here are best together in just this way. (after, you'll get some links to some nice color inspiration).

Chocolate brown & Terra-cotta & Taupe
Chocolate brown & Metallic Gold & Neutral bisque
Chocolate brown & Delicate teal & Teal blue
Chocolate brown & Teal blue & Gernaium red
Chocolate brown & Brick red & Sky blue

Espresso brown & Soft Orange & Coffee with cream
Espresso brown & Aquamarine & Silver
Espresso brown & Blushing Pink & Silver
Espresso brown & Hot pink and Icy Silver
Espresso brown & Candy apple red & Graphite gray
Espresso brown & Cinnamon & Pale sky blue

Light purple & Teal Blue & Geranium red
Cream & Earthy green & Cinnamon
Gold & Copper & Brownish Taupe
Coral brown & Cream & Rich brown
Brilliant yellow & Lavender & Light brown
Orange & Burnt Orange & Brown
Gray brown & Red & Cream
Orange & Dark brown & Metallic gold
Golden yellow & Sky blue & Velvety brown
Aquamarine & Butterscotch gold & dark brown
Cinnamon & Dark brown & Sky blue

This part would have been easier if you would have given us the style of furniture you have, but the pics should help for color inspiration... I hope you enjoy this, because I certainly enjoyed doing the research for this. I LOVE doing this !!!! :)

So... hope that was fun...

The best and most trusted way to find the color for any room, is to take an accessory or decorative item that will be going into that room: the duvet cover, the curtains, a painting, a rug, blinds, shutters, upholstered furniture, a lamp... you get the idea). Choose the item with passion. Make it something that you ABSOLUTELY LOVE, perhaps it was handed down by your great-grandmother or a cherished item you worked hard for. Or make it something that just SCREAMED out your name when you were shopping, so you knew you had to have it! Choose your color pattern from that item. And take it from there.

Keep in mind too, that color is an amazing thing! There's psychology behind color - it can make you have wonderful, relaxing dreams... or it can keep you from falling asleep, especially if you're already a wound-up 6 year old little boy! It can make you feel warm and comfortable, or hot and stifled. It can make you feel nice, fresh and cool - or it can make you feel like parts of you are going to freeze off. Color can be your friend or your enemy. And really, the earth can "shed some light" on us to help decide every color scheme. Here's how:
What direction does your room face - North, South, East or West? It makes a difference. If you've got the sun pounding down on your bedroom window, you'll want to stay away from warm colors, such as reds, yellows, oranges, etc. They'll make you feel too hot. Opt for cooler colors, such as blues, turquoise, cool creams... think mediterranean beach style here. In a room facing North, that doesn't get much light, you'll opt more for warmer colors and brighter colors: yellow, bright pinks, golden hues. Here's a most interesting link about how color affects us psychologicallly:

http://keelynet.com/biology/coloraff.htm

That's all I guess... Hope I helped you choose your color ;-)

You're always welcome to email and I'd enjoy knowing what color scheme you chose...!

Does anyone have any ideas for a teenage girls bedroom?

Cutie78

I just painted my bedroom black and hot pink but I'm stuck on everything else. If you could give me some tips it would be great. Decorating tips, furniture ideas, links to bedding. I'm sixteen years old if that helps!

Answer
Stick with either white or black for the furniture. There also seems to be lots of black and white bedding available that would suit the colours. If you do the bedding in black and white, it might be fun to have your sheets in hot pink and some accent cushions too.

Should I haggle the price since I'm getting a smaller bed?
What are your tips on haggling or do you have any experiences?

8 of those pieces are the bed clothing

I would do a little haggling since it's a smaller bed. You know when you're getting a deal sometimes they don't like to bargain with you.

How to you figure out when your ovulating?

tessie2005

My Husband and I are trying to have a baby but I cant seem to get the timing right. I need to know how do you calculate your ovulation when you have VERY irregular piriods? I'm not on any kind of set cycle, most women have a 28 day cycle, mine bounces around like carzy. How do I know when I'm actually ovulating?

Answer
I anwsered it this way for someone else hope this helps. If this works for you make sure you name your first born "Zqx357"

You need to know some basic things. Let me help you. Yes I am a guy these instructions were given to my wife and I by a Doctor. Follow my instructions if you and your husband are healthy adults of Child bearing age this plan will work for you

First, you need to understand your monthly cycle.

Write down the date your period starts the first month then the following month write down the date the next period ENDS. Now count the days that is considered your cycle. Most ladies have a 28 day cycle. The most likely day to conceive is the date at the mid way point between periods. This is when your egg will move down to your womb. For example, If you have a 28 day cycle next month count out 14 days from when your period starts that is the day to conceive for you. Mark it on your calender. Do NOT start counting when your period ends again start counting days when your period begins. Some ladies cycle is always different one month it could be 28 days the next month it might be 30 days, but by counting days you can narrow down the day. Continue to track and find that mid point day even it your cycle is alway differnt. To be sure you get the right day there is one other thing you must do. Pay attention is part is important!

Second, Go to Wal-mart and purchase a digital thermometer they have them for as little as $4.00. Put it next to your bed with piece of paper and a pen. Then when you wake up each and every morning without fail take your temperure BEFORE YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM. ITS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO THIS AS SOON AS YOU GET UP AND extremely important that you take your temperture BEFORE YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM. Record your temperture on the piece of paper. Every morning your temperature should near 98.6 degrees. The day you can conceive (your ovulation day) your temperture will spike 1 to 2 degrees higher then all the other recorded temperatures. When that happens wake your husband up and have him do his part. NO oral please! Warning if you take your temperture after you pee you will get a false reading - peeing will raise your temperture by 1-2 degrees. Your Ovulation time is usually only 1-2 days each month. That means you only have one to two chances each month to get it done. Repeat these steps each month until you conceive.

Third, the more sex a man has the lower his sperm count is when your are approaching day 14th (or whatever your ovulation day is) do not have sex make your husband wait until your temperture spikes. It will raise his sperm count through the ceiling. The higher the sperm count the better the chance of conception. When you are trying to conceive the worst thing you can do is have sex every day. Daily sex will lower your husband's sperm count and conception is more difficult. Every other day or every third day is ok!

Fourth, Ask God to help you to increase your faith please read First Samuel chapter 1 (its in the Old Testament) The story is about this lady who could not conceive but she had faith in God She prayed for a child and God anwsered her prayer. Please read it.

Fifth, Sometimes conception takes time if it does not happen as soon as you like just keep trying until it does.
Have fun in the bedroom and don't take it to seriously.

Be blessed!

Which is better for painting furniture - oil or latex?

cobaltblue

I'm painting a piece of furniture for the first time. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Answer
i guess latex is better.
To achieve a professional quality finish you must sand the wood smooth, repair all defects, and prime the surface before painting. You should also use the highest quality paint and brushes to obtain the best resultsTo produce smooth surfaces, always sand with the grain of the wood. The material should go through at least three sandings with successively finer grit sandpaper. Start with 80 grit, move to 150 grit and finish with 220 grit. Use a tack cloth to remove dust between sandings.
Raise the grain in the wood by rubbing it lightly with a damp cloth. Allow the wood to dry, and sand the raised grain smooth with 400 or higher grit sandpaper or synthetic steel wool. Use a tack cloth to remove any sanding dust.

Use a lamp or flashlight to set up a raking light (a light that shines on the project's surfaces at a steep angle). Apply a light coat of denatured alcohol to each surface as you inspect it. Alcohol increases the bare wood's sheen and highlights any areas that still need sanding or smoothing. Rub out any rough spots with synthetic steel wool. Wipe the material with a clean tack cloth to remove any dust

Use a high quality synthetic bristled brush to apply a light coat of water-based, enamel undercoating primer to your project. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check the project one more time with the raking light and repair any imperfections.

Use a synthetic bristled brush to apply a light coat of latex (water-based) paint to your project. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions and recoat with paint until you are satisfied with the finish. When painting, it is always better to apply two thin coats than one thick one, to avoid runs, drips, sags and other potential paint problems.

For more protection, you can add a topcoat to your paint with two layers of water-based polyurethane.
Apply a thin coat with a synthetic bristled brush.
Allow the polyurethane to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Sand the topcoat lightly with 400 or higher grit sandpaper or synthetic steel wool. Remove any sanding dust with a tack cloth.
Brush on a second light coat of polyurethane and allow it to dry.

Choosing Paint
When painting indoors, use paint marked as "Interior" or "Interior/Exterior." Exterior paint is not for indoor use. Plus it doesn't dry as quickly and has a stronger odor — an important factor inside the house.

Sheen is the term used to describe the degree of light reflection a paint has. Usually the less sheen an interior paint has, the less stain-resistant it is. Different manufacturers may have various trade names for them, but in general sheens are classified as "Gloss," "Semi-Gloss," "Satin" and "Flat."

Gloss is the toughest. It's also an easier surface to clean, which makes it a good choice for areas of high traffic or constant use. Gloss is most often used on a home's wood trim, baseboards and kitchen and bath walls. Gloss paint will, however, show imperfections in the surface more than other sheens.

Semi-gloss paints are also durable and easy to clean, but have less shine than gloss. They are just as suitable for woodwork, kitchens, baths and other high-traffic or high-humidity places.

Satin offers a good combination of easy-clean and moderate sheen.

Eggshell is a smooth, low-sheen finish that has less sheen than satin. It is ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and dens.

Flat paint is considered non-reflective and a good choice for large wall and ceiling areas. It also hides imperfections well and spatters less when applied.
Semi-gloss and satin are typically the best sheen choices for painting furniture.

Painting Tips and Considerations
Always use quality paint. Paints with higher concentrations of solids cover better, flow more evenly and help hide or reduce brush strokes.

Use the right brush. Synthetic bristle brushes are for latex (acrylic or water-based) paint and natural bristle brushes are for solvent-based paint.

Always use a primer. Primer adheres to wood surfaces better than paint. Primer also helps stop or reduce the effects of acids, pitch or tar that can migrate out of the wood and stain through your paint.

Brush with the wood grain. Brushing with the grain helps the paint flow more evenly and reduces the appearance of lap marks.

Allow the paint to dry completely between coats. Paint that hasn't dried fully tends to have higher surface tension and restricts your paints flow.

Remember Jerry Seinfeld's apartment set on Seinfeld. How big is that compared to real apartments in Manhattan?

bedroom set under 800 image

PER92

People say affordable apartments in Manhattan are small. I'm just curious how they compare to the Seinfeld apartment seen on the show.

Answer
There are two things you have to consider:

1) Seinfeld was fantasy, nobody wants to watch a TV show set in 600 sqft studio apartment over a Chinese restaurant. His "apartment" was a decent size for Manhattan.

2) Seinfeld was filmed in the early 90s, back then, rent was far less than what it is today. His apartment in the 90s might have gone for $1,800 or so.
Today, that same apartment, a one bedroom, elevator building, intercom system, would probably start at $2,700—and that's if you're lucky.

My apartment is in the Upper West Side, 2,200 sqft, two bedroom elevator, doorman, intercom, private terrace and private video surveillance, on-site gym, and it's $4,200 a month to give you an idea of running Manhattan rates.

Depending on what you're willing to sacrifice, which part of Manhattan you're willing to live, and how hard you look (I'll be honest, I didn't spend near as much time as I should have viewing and looking at apartments), you could find an apartment for much less. However, finding anything under $2,000 that isn't in the projects is a Godsend.

Answer
Running is probably going to be your most important workout. I recommend a long distance run once a week, a high intensity run once a week, an interval run once a week, a 1.5 mile run once a week and wind sprints once a week.

Your long distance runs should start at about 3.5 miles and increase by a quarter of a mile each week.

Your high intensity run should be the maximum effort you can produce for a period of 15-20 minutes.

There are different ways you can do your interval run but I like to walk a quarter mile and then run a quarter mile. During the interval run you should be running slightly faster than your one mile run pace. try to do between 6-10 intervals per run.

Your mile and a half run should be a sprint. complete that mile and a half as fast as you can.

When sprinting, start by walking 100 yards then sprinting 100 yards, then bump it up to a 200 yard walk with a 200 yard sprint, then 400, 800, 400, 200, 100. Unless you are already an extremely well conditioned runner, you will puke during this one. I do pretty much every time.

As for workouts to help with strength, push-ups are of course going to be #1 since you are preparing for boot camp. Pyramid sets work well but I prefer doing 5 sets with a rest period of 1:30-2:00 minutes between each set. Start by doing your max so you know where you are physically. For example, if your max is 50 push-ups, do 20 push-ups each set. Make sure you are going slow on each push-up and really emphasizing proper form on your push-ups. Each week you can try increasing the number of push-ups per set. Also, be sure to test your max push-ups once a week.

You can also try inverted push-ups to help strengthen different muscles. Rest your feet on an object that is off the ground a bit and do your push-ups that way.

Dips are another good workout you can do at home or while running at the park. Find a chair or coffee table or park bench and do some dips.

Sit-ups are good as well. I put my meet under the couch so I don't have to bug my dad or brother to hold my feet every time I want to do sit-ups. I like to do 5 sets of 35 with a 50 second rest in between. Crunches also work well but I think the sit-ups are better since you are training for basic.

Flutter kicks are great for your core and hip flexer muscles. Try doing 3 sets of flutter kicks and after the last set hold your feet 6' off the ground with your legs out straight for at least 30 seconds. You will really feel it in your core. I would start with sets of 20.

Lunges, squats and wall sits are great for your legs and you can incorporate your weights in with these workouts.

If you can swing the cash to get a pull-up bar for your bedroom door, I highly recommend it. Pull-ups are another great workout.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your training.

We are looking for a new bedroom set and wondered where we could get one without spending thousands on it....We went to IKEA but we were not crazy about any of the sets there. Any you can reccommend online? Thank you!

Answer
It really depends on where you live. Here in Wisconsin, the place to go is Furniture Deals & Steals, with one in Madison, one near La Crosse, and one in Baraboo (that I'm aware of). I've seen another place, advertised on TV, called Jennifer Convertibles, that seemed to have some sensible prices on couches...so maybe they'd have good prices on bedroom sets. You'll just have to look around your area and make some calls, and also on the internet too. There are lots of independent furniture stores to check out. And sometimes you can get a really good deal at some second-hand places, or even an estate auction. Then there's the random hotel auctions, which you can often get a really decent set of furniture at a good price. I'm not fooled by name brands though. My daughter used to work at Ashley Furniture, and she saw how it was really made. Cheap junk. And I bought an Englander king sized mattress 5 years ago, that came with a 15 year warranty, and it's in need of a new mattress (sagging) already. Make sure you and another person lays on the mattress for several minutes before buying it, to check for comfort and workmanship. Even if you do all the right things, there's still no guarantee you'll get something that will last longer than a few years, depending on how hard you are on your furniture. Hope you find what you're looking for. <*)))><

Where can I see samples of vintage Drexel Furniture types online?

joe friday

In cleaning out my grandparents' basement, I discovered several beautiful, well-preserved pieces of vintage Drexel mahogany furniture. There is a six piece bedroom set, a desk, and a buffet (sideboard). According to my mother, this furniture was purchased around 1930. I want to determine which line these pieces came from, so that I can research the value. Does anyone know of an online (or other) resource with detailed photos of antique fine furniture lines?

Answer
You might try looking at ebay.com, and not just the auction stuff, but the stores, too. If the pieces are solid mahogany and not mahogany veneer, they might be worth a good bit of money. You may wish to send photos to one of the auction houses (Sothebys or Christies) for an estimate of their value; they will know which line the pieces are.

Need some tipcs on new cat?

Dergyll

Hello guys,

Due to a most positive suggestion, I just returned home bearing my new cat! Her name is Zoe and she's gray (I don't know alot about cats...)

http://www.cthumane.org/site/PageServer?pagename=adopt_NewingtonPets

Scroll to the bottom of the page, she's the last one.

So now I'm curious about things, here are some questions:
How long should we keep her isolated in one room? (thats what the councelor said to do)

What do cats do to show that they're hungry/sleepy/sick/need to pee?

Anybody recommend a Vet in the Hartford area of CT?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!
Derg
Sorry, but the picture and discription of her was removed a few hours ago.

Answer
Kudos to you for giving Zoe a home and choosing an adult shelter cat.

How long she stays in one room will depend on her personality and your living situation (how many people in the home, children, other cats or dogs, etc.).

And cats are always very upset when moved from one location to another - even moving to a new house or apartment with an owner they know is stressful for them.

So the key to this is to let her have a small space to chill out. You need to set up a space with a litterbox, a tray with her water and food. If that space is a laundry room or a bathroom some sort of soft bedding should be provided. If it's a bedroom she may seem to hide under a bed for a day or several. You just go in and "refresh" the stuff on the tray and scoop out the litterbox, always talking softly to her as you do it. If you can have the time to sit in the room, reading, listening to music or whatever she may come out to investigate. If she was affectionate and cuddly at the shelter she probably won't be right away in her new place.

She will let you know when she feels ready to take on other parts of the house. If she is excessively shy and hiding I would suggest you pick up a bottle of Rescue Remedy from a health food store or pharmacy. You just shake the bottle well and put three or four drops on the fur between her ears. If you can't reach her easily put the drops on a small cloth and put it under the bed. Use the drops LAVISHLY. They will help her achieve a good emotional blance and prepare her for moving on in her new home.

Good luck with her. Let me know how it goes.

I want to buy a new bedroom set at an affordable price. Nothing more than 1500. Any suggestions on furniture stores/websites in the Dallas tx area? Thanks!

Answer
i dont know what you have out there in texas but have you tried walmart or target? i know its like "ew why would i get my stuff there?" especially if your a teen into brand names, but they're stuff is really good and low priced. not so much target but at walmart you can get EVERYTHING to match. you could even have the bedroom and if you have your own, bathroom to match! check it out;) http://www.walmart.com/

TIP:
if you have a small bedroom, look at some loft beds. i have one in my room and my floor soace literlly DOUBLED from getting one!

where can i get some furniture at a discounted rate?

run like t

just moved into a new house and i dont have alot of money to spend but i definitely need a good bedroom set for my daughter and i at a reasonable price. i live in baltimore so if anyone knows of any places i would appreciate it. thanks in advance...oh also if you know where i can get some carpet from too that would help as well.

Answer
Craigslist is your best bet! I'm not sure how many people sell on Craigslist up there, but here in Dallas it's like a gold mine. People are selling perfectly good furniture at garage sale prices. It's hard for me not to want to buy it all!
Also down here the Salvation Army and Goodwill have furniture. A lot of older furniture is better anyway because it's solid wood and doesn't have the formaldehyde and bad chemicals that the new "fake wood" furniture has. Good luck!

What kind of bedroom furniture should I get?

bedroom set quality

Jason Vand

I'm moving into my new place next week and I'll be searching for a bedroom set. Is there anything I should know about whats good and what isn't? I want quality, but I don't want to spend a fortune. I'm a 20 year old college student. I like the beds that sit closer to the ground, but I'm not sure about the quality on those. Hopefully you guys/gals can help me out.

Answer
My advice for anyone wanting to buy new furniture but are on a budget: Go shopping at your local furniture store and take notes on the make & model of the furniture that you like. You can then go to the internet & find the exact same furniture(many times with free delivery) at a huge discount. Here is a site that has links to many stores that sell the beds that sit close to the ground.

Is furniture made in Southeast Asia of good quality?

senknfl

I am considering buying a bedroom set made by Magnussen Home. The set is made in Vietnam of solid hardwood. I am a little concerned that it my not be of great quality. I don't want to buy it if it is going to be a piece of junk that falls apart. Is furniture made in Southeast Asia of good quality? Or does the quality of the furniture depend more on material and quality of construction than it does on where it was built?

Answer
I am in the furniture business and do carry Magnussen. 95% of all case goods are made there now. They make some very well built furniture. All dove tail joints on the drawers. Nice wood on wood guides. And very nice carvings on there pieces. What group are you interested in? The Valenza and Reflections are my favorites from them.
Don't worry about where it is made just look at how it's made.

Anyone know where I can get an affordable 2 bedroom apartment in Houston?

The Travel

Alright here's the deal
I'm a college student at the University of Houston - Downtown campus.
My roommate is going to be working at a place off Gray St.
We're looking for a 2 bedroom apartment near the area (not too far but inside the loop)
Is there anyone out there who can give me a heads up on where to look?
Or if you have experience with an apartment complex near the area?
Thanks!!!

Answer
More info needed.

Hopefully your room mate earns a nice paycheck and you come from a rich family, if you want an inner loop place that doesn't have dirt floors and junkies at your door for less than $1500 per month for a one bedroom, because location is everything.

Camden Heights
404 Oxford Street, Houston, TX 77007
(281) 733-2683

This place is about 1/2 mile north of West Gray, nestled in The Heights. Recent construction in a very desirable area very close to downtown and accessible to Metro. The cheapest 2/2 will set you back $1725/mo.

Good luck.

Relocating to another state..any suggestions?

cvsspirit9

I'm moving from Chicago, IL to Houston, TX. I already have two job interviews set up for next week and have already been preapproved for apartment so far so good.

My biggest set back is how to get my stuff down there. I'm selling my living room set, dining room & bedroom set. So I'm taking any furniture with me because it seems easier to sell it then to pay to move it. I can just buy new stuff cheaper. However, I also have a '05 Chrysler Sebring that I want to take with me. Everyone keeps telling me that I shouldn't put the miles on it by driving it. But it doesn't make since to ship it. I'm only taking cloths, kitchenware, 2 TV's and some nick nacks that I could put in a small trailer and hook up to the car. But people laugh at me when I say I'm going to drive it down there. It's 1200 miles but I'm just trying to go the cheapest route.

Any suggestions?

Answer
Make sure that you can transfer your health insurance to Texas with you, Nothing you take along can be that important. If you become ill you will end up with nothing due to bills you incur without insurance. Good luck to you better keep your car too, in case your job is far away from your apartment.

I just moved into a small 1 br apartment in Gainesville, FL to attend the University of Florida as a grad student. I had previously stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment (including washing machine and dryer) and used <500 KWH per month. Just received my 1st full month's bill from GRU and it's 871 KWH for 33 days. That's $126! I'm extremely conservative (central air is usually set at ~75/80 degrees, lights are kept off when not in use) and I don't even have a washer/dryer here as I did in my previous apartment.

Could something be wrong with my meter?
It is a 2 level apt/townhouse, so I guess that may be 1 contributing factor as one responder indicated....
I actually turned my central air off at the breaker as of today. I'm pretty sure that is a major culprit. Guess that will eliminate any problems with poor insulation, etc. right??? This adjustment shouldn't phase me since I'm in Florida. I simply can't afford it: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmBeAKQbY14vHdbNTdTE88_sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080926174623AA3GmN9

Answer
I answer this question in detail in my article, "Why is my electric bill so high?" at http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/whyhigh.html but I'll give you a short summary here.

(1) It's likely mostly from your air conditioning.

(2) You are not "extremely conservative" if you run air conditioning at all, much less at 75 degrees! You might say that most people do so, but that would make that action "typical", not "extremely conservative".

(3) Turn off all your breakers and look at your electric meter. Did it stop spinning? If so, your meter's not broken. Don't waste your electric company's time by complaining to them. It's not their fault or problem.

(4) The answer about needing to unplug things you're not using is flat-out wrong. The small amount of vampire power is not the biggest part of your bill.

(5) Paul's suggestion that you match the reading on your electric meter with what's printed on your bill is spot-on. Make sure they didn't charge you for more than the meter says.

Girl and boy sharing bedroom decorating advice?

Sierra L

My two kids. are 7 year olds and will be sharing a room. One a girl and one a boy. What are some cute bedroom sets that will go together well or were meant to be together, that will look great in their room.

Answer
I wouldn't go with a theme, I would make it colorful, like paint the walls and have neutral curtains and light fixtures but I would be sure that they each had a shelf or some kind of storage to call their own that they can have their things on. I would keep the bedspreads the same color but put pillows and little touches that are different on the beds. For example, a red ladybug pillow for her and a red car pillow for him. The ideas are endless in my head right now. I'm sure you'll come up with something great and they'll love it. Take care.

How much money do I need to furnish a new apartment?

on AS_B184 DISCONTINUED B184 Ashley Havianna Bedroom Set
bedroom set ashley furniture image

AMe

It's a one bedroom. I have a TV, pots n pans, kitchen table, and living room table & end tables.

I'll have to buy almost EVERYthing else. I can buy stuff like Value City or Ashley furniture. How much will it cost for a bed set, sheets, couch, lamps, towels, trash cans, etc....

How about hook up fees for phones and gas, etc?

Answer
I don't know where you live, but you should try to get as much as you can at garage sales or second hand shops. This would include dishes, glasses, silverware, ect.

For the things you don't want to get used try ikea. They have everything you could possibly need to furnish an apartment, and the bonus is that they are reasonably priced and their stuff is cute! Also go to Walmart, Target and Kmart for things like bedding, towels, and accessories.

www.ikea.com

mattress/boxspring--$200-1000 depending on your preference. If you want to save money, buy just the mattress and buy a platform bed because you don't need a boxspring.

platform bed or frame--$50-150

Bathroom accessories (towels, washcloths, shower curtain ect) $50-$75

Couch and chair--$400+

lamps (2)--$50

bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows ect)--$100

All the extra things you will need to set up your kitchen with like a microwave, toaster, dish towels ect will run you about $150

A phone will cost about $35 for hookup and gas and electric usually make you pay one months utilities in advance so I would guess about $150 total. A lot of people aren't getting home phones anymore, but instead just using their cell phones. This would save you a monthly bill of at least $35 (and that is if you don't use long distance!)

All of this information could be more expensive depending on what part of the country you live in. Like I said before, get as much as you can at garage sales or second hand shops like a microwave, and even a bed frame if you can find one. I don't know when you are moving but start looking early. Also, ask relatives if they have any old items you can have/borrow because they might be willing to give up an old couch they have in their basement and you can get a slip cover for it which will save you hundreds of dollars.

Would you buy a mattress from craigslist?

Jax101

My husband and I have a rather successful side project buying furniture for great deals on craigslist and then reselling them after minor repairs. We mostly stick to sectionals and couches but recently scored an entire bedroom set (king bed, 2 nightstands, dresser with mirror) for $300. The set itself is in great condition, its modern and sleek, no flaws and from Ashley home furniture. We can easily resell for $600 (we live in a large city). However, we also saw a posting for a newer mattress and bed spring set for $130 that they are selling due to moving. In your opinion- would you more likely buy a king bedroom set with mattress and box spring for $1000 or without for $600-800? Keep in mind this is craigslist and everything is always used. I appreciate your opinion.

Answer
I am sitting on a king mattress I bought off craigslist.

This set includes 1 upright dresser, 1 long dresser w/attached mirror, headboard, and a nightstand. It dates to 1970 as it still has the furniture store's delivery slip to the customer on the back of the mirror. The mirror itself btw has a copyright stamp of "Thomasville 1969" Sorry i didn't take any photos of the set. It looks great and something you would find at the "Brady Bunch" house lol. They are wanting $349.00 Is that a bargain?

Answer
The value is $349. It's a bargain if you have the money and want it.

What bedding color would look good with this?

Jessica

We just painted our bedroom yellow, a pretty bright yellow. We're planning on doing our baseboard and trim just a whitish color so it isn't too overbearing, and we're planning on doing some turquoise accents in the bathroom. We are looking for a black and white shower curtain with either a lace or scroll design, and we are trying to decide what color bedding would go good with all of this? Should it be like a gray color, or turquoise, or something else? I found this one that I really like
http://www.target.com/p/xhilaration-lace-comforter-set/-/A-14271879?reco=Rec|pdp|14271879|ClickCP|item_page.new_vertical_1&lnk=Rec|pdp|ClickCP|item_page.new_vertical_1

but I didn't think it would go good since it has yellow on the underneath?? Not that you would see it that much. If we did that bedding, should we do something different for the shower curtain so there isn't to much black and white? Also, our bed and bedroom furniture is black.
Thanks for your help!

Answer
Yellow with turquoise is very 1950's and 60's. Try periwinkle blue instead, even for the shower curtain.
