It can be more difficult to find bedding for an extra long twin bed. In stores, these extra long sheets are easier to find at the end of the summer, during back to school sales. You can also find sheets for an extra long twin bed online.

Some suggest using an extra long twin bed in a guest room. If you purchase two, you can push them together and create a king-size bed. Keep in mind that if you do buy an extra long mattress, you will need a new bed frame to go with it. Most mattress stores will include a new frame for little or no cost with the purchase of a new mattress and box spring.

If an extra long twin bed is not what you are looking for, there are many other mattress sizes available. A double bed, also known as a full, is another popular choice for a guest bedroom or a small apartment. These are 54 inches by 75 inches (137 cm by 190 cm). Some couples find them uncomfortable and too small for two people.

The most popular sizes for couples are queen and king size beds. Queen beds are 60 inches by 80 inches (152 cm by 203 cm). You can get a metal bed frame with adapter plates that will allow you to bolt on your HB and FB, but use your full-sized mattress instead of the queen-size. The only thing you would not be using would be the rails that come with the bed (if there are any). Any mattress store in your town carries metal frames, and they can help you choose the right one for the bed you are buying.

I decided on a black steel bed for one of my bedrooms but i dont know what type of dresser or nightstand to get with it. It is not sold as a bedroom set. The store suggested that most people who buy this type bed get black solid wood furniture like an armoire or chest to complement it. i am not into matching since i have eclectic taste just wondering for some suggestions.
It is the masterbedroom and the walls will be a light gray color. The trim is white and the bedroom comforter set will be either white or blue.

With a black steel bed any color would go with it. You could try to match or tone in with the floor or wall. Or you could go with a contrasting color, although probably best not to have more than 3 or 4 colors total. It also depends a bit on the size of the room, i.e. the larger the room, the more colors you could use, if you want to. Also, because it is a bedroom, maybe you should use paler pastel colors rather than bold primary colors.

The main thing is to have fun with it!!!!!!!!

Is there a big difference between coffee and espresso colored furniture?

Q. I am trying to complete a bedroom set by purchasing different parts from different sets. The headboard I bought was beautiful, but the dressers and armoires weren't. So I'm putting together my own "set". I would consider my headboard to be an espresso color and there is a dresser online that is considered "coffee" color. There are other dressers that are espresso but I L0VE this dresser. If I were to purchase it would the colors be totally off?

Espresso is nearly black Coffee is a very dark brown ..As far as the colors being off...yes depends on their proximity and the lighting too. PLus the colors are wildly different manufacturer to manufacturer. It could work especially if it is multitoned.. What I would do is take a photo that accurately represents the color of the headboard and email it to them but their monitors could be skewed.

You can find out easily. A 50 year old set is not an antique, so it isn't going to have a huge auction value. Look online at craigslist or similar sites, to see what similar sets are selling for. Pictures are often included in the ads and are very useful in making a comparison. Consider the prices people are asking for to be a starting point for negotiations.

IMPORTANT: If you are not the original purchaser of the furniture, be sure to check out the manufacturer of the set. Some are worth a SUBSTANTIAL amount more than others.

I have a beutiful set of oak bedroom furniture that i actually got for next to nothing but it is great. The sad part of having anything beautiful, like well-made furniture, is that many people can't or won't appreciate it. I found this to be true when an Appraiser came through an estate I was handling and put these ridiculously small values on some fine pieces of furniture. His answer was that there is a small market for "used" furniture; most young people today would rather go to a "Big Box" store and buy some "you-build-it" crap made out of particle board than spend a few dollars more and have something they can cherish for years.
You can certainly try selling the suite on eBay, but unless the set is really old, you may not find a buyer...
You may want to try placing an ad in the classifieds of your local paper, but that usually entails alot of unwarranted phone calls.
We have "consignment" shops in this area that will take in items like this, but, if you have a timely need for cash, you may have to wait a while before the set sells.
Auction houses are always looking for quality merchandise, but there again you have to be careful, as their costs may eat up a lot of your possible gain.
Word-of-mouth may be the easiest; letting people know at work, your place of worship, etc.
And then, there is always donation. You state that you got for "next to nothing", so if you're not looking to make a few bucks, need the space, and want to feel good about it, you can call a local charitable orgainzation. They could come pick it up for nothing and you get a decent tax write off.
Good luck....Like I said, nice pieces can be difficult to "get rid" of. I have two of my parents solid mahogany dressers that neither of my sons want, so I don't know where they will end up..........

We are moving into an apartment on June 4th. This is the first time we will be living on our own. What will we absolutly need for the first week or two? We already bought our living room and bedroom set and a tv. We also bought a small garbage can, forks/spoons/butter knives, small storage bowls, 15 tall glasses, and 4 of those mats you put in the cabinets to put your dishes on. What do we deff need besides what i listed to make it through the first 2 weeks. (BESIDES FOOD. lol)

3. dish towels, dish soap, dish drainer and a few sponges

7. laundry detergent & a laundry hamper or bag
8. paper towels/napkins; toilet paper, Kleenex, a toilet plunger & small waste basket for your bathroom
9. renter's insurance to cover all of your belongings in the apartment
10. cleaning products: comet (for sinks & toilets), disinfectant (Lysol)
11. broom and dust pan (& vacuum?)

The first thing you should get is "into the best neighborhood you can afford". The second thing is renters insurance. Pots, pans and plates are about 2 bucks a pound at your local Goodwill and Salvation Army Stores (and the money goes to some very good causes).

How can i install track lightingin a bedroom with only switched outlets?

i currently have an IKEA termosfar track light set now, but i just heard from another friend (who has the same system) that it can only be installed with a overhead light already in place.
OR does someone know how to switch which outlets are connected to the light switch in the room? currently the only one is next to the bed, an needless to say, its pretty dark in the bedroom!

Track lighting can either be powered from an attachment at the end of the track that has a power cord coming out of it or you can hook the lighting system directly up to wiring in the ceiling (use the plug attachment, but cut the cord down and wire it directly to the wiring in the ceiling).

If you don't have wiring in the ceiling, you then have to run the power cord - and probably an extension - along the ceiling to the wall and then down the wall to an outlet. You can tack the cord to the wall with cable clips (loops of plastic that wrap around the cable and have a hole in each end for running a screw through). You can run the cord down a corner, so it's not as obvious, and then run the cord along the baseboard to a switched outlet.

In order to change which outlet is switched, you would have to have access to the wiring in the wall. That means you'll have to cut out the drywall all the way along the path of the wiring from the switch to the outlet you want switched. This is because you'll need to re-route the wiring for the outlet you want switched to the switch instead of its current, non-switched supply.

In other words, it's probably not worth the effort to change which outlet is switched. Just run the power cord to the switched outlet.

How could I keep the air con from freezing over if I have the temp set at 50 degrees?

I know it could probably bring it down to that Temperature in 3-4 hours but would like to know if it is dangerous for the compressor and how I could prevent the unit from freezing over? Thanks

Two ways, the first less expensive, but not as safe.. Find a "trol-a-temp" Freeze protection sensor (opens at 36 degrees) and find a place to mount it on the evaporator side of the coil,in between the evaporator coil, and the suction side of the compressor right on the copper pipe, then hook up the two wires to "break" the control voltage to the compressor contactor.
Second, Find a head pressure control kit, PENN makes a good one. Hook up the 1/4"
Pressure connection at the outlet of the condenser coil,inbetween the condenser coil, and the evaporator coil then hook up the wires to "break" the condenser fan, so it cycles, maintaining a decent head pressure, so you do not "flood" the compressor with refrigerant

How do you turn a room in the basement with concrete walls into a bedroom?

I'm moving back to my dad's house and want to turn a room in the basement into my bedroom. Two of the walls are "normal" walls with wallpaper, but 2 of them are still concrete, and have been covered with rug squares. I don't know anything about home improvement, but I want to be able to paint the walls and make the room look nice. How do I do this?

You've got two good answers, and a bunch of others from people who don't have a clue what they're talking about.

First off, as Steve said, you technically can't make a basement into living space unless there are at least two points of egress (exit). If the basement has two exits (even a basement window qualifies as an emergency exit), then you're good.

A proper setup would be furred out and insulated walls and a raised floor. But if you know that the floor doesn't get cold/damp in the winter, you could go with just doing the walls (in dry areas, the insulation provided by carpet and padding can suffice, and since this sounds like it's already a partially finished basement, I assume that if it's needs a raised floor, you've already got one).

Use construction adhesive (comes in a tube like caulk) to adhere 2x4 studs to the concrete walls, just like you were building a normal framed wall. Space the studs 16" on center - in the inside corner, make sure they're set so the drywall from both walls is supported in the corner Install wiring for receptacles (per code, every 6' of wall space needs a receptacle), and telephone and TV cable as desired. Insulate, apply a plastic film vapor barrier, and drywall. Then paint, wallpaper, whatever.

If you do need to create a raised floor the, it's the same idea as the walls, except you only need 2x2s (or 2x4s laid on their side), and instead of drywall, you lay down 3/4" underlayment (a type of plywood).

To do a 12x12 room (two walls only), you're looking at about $80-100 in materials. To do the floor, another $70.

You don't BUY an apartment. You rent one, usually with a yearly renewable lease. Municipal government (city) taxes, water tax, and garbage tax are usually the responsibility of the owner of the building, not the tenant that rents an apartment in the building. Those costs are included as part of your rent. There should be no provincial or federal taxes imposed.

You would normally be responsible for the school tax, payable to the schoolboard in your area, and the tax will vary depending on the school district. These would normally not be more than $1000 per year, but then again I don't live in Toronto, so not sure exact amounts.

Now if you are referring to a condominium, that's a different story. With that setup, you may be responsible for a portion of the municipal taxes, divided equally among the condo owners. Or it may be included in your condo fees. But again, it varies depending on the building and section of the city you live in. But it's practically impossible to tell you even a rough idea what you might pay because of this variation.

(In case some people are not familiar with this term, a "condo" is kind of like an apartment, but you own your section of the building, and you share costs for expenses to the common parts of the building.)

So, my husband and I bought a bedroom furniture (inculding mattress) set via craigslist. When we got it to our house, we noticed several tiny roach crawling out of the drawers. Obviously the house we bought it from was infested!!! Thankfully we have not seen any come out of the mattress. We are afraid to use soup and water because this will damage the furniture. Any suggestions? Is this salvagable, or did we just buy a disaster?!?!?!

There are probably many roach nests INSIDE the mattress; that would explain the juvenile roaches you saw. No telling how bad the infestation is unless you open the mattress and destroy it. I would put it in the dumpster, IMO.

No, I'm not a poser. I'm not doing this to be cool or liked. I'm douing this because I genuinley want to and I love the style.

A great way (and an extremely neat way) to do this is by going to a sign shop in your area. They can set up the size and font of the type you want on your wall and then they run this information through a machine that cuts the letters into a light-weight vinyl. They then apply a "mask" to this so you can easily apply it to your wall. They will be happy to show you how to do this. You will also have a pretty wide assortment of vinyl color from which to choose. Tell them what you're doing with the lettering and they might also give you tips on application that will make it easy to remove the letter in the future of you change your room design.

I'm in the market for some new bedroom furniture. I'm not necessarily in a hurry to get it, but I am curious about how long I can expect the process to take. I plan on buying from a "showroom" type furniture store, as opposed to a warehouse or clearance center. Plus, I'm getting a king bed and I hear that most stores cater towards customers looking for queens. I guess I will have to "order" the furniture. If you ordered from a store like this, how long did it take?

Also, I did find one set that i like, but i was told they cant deliver for 7-8 weeks due to back order. Is that standard wait time or way too long?

I had to wait that long to get the living room sofa I special ordered.

And my bed took even longer but then we had an artist make a special headboard.

What are some good ways to shim interior doors?

My 3 bedroom doors wont stay where I put them. I know I have to shim them but dont know with what or which hinge to shim. Is there a doorman in the house? Any tricks of the trade?

shims are made from cedar shingles, cut into strips about 1 1/2" wide. because of the taper, if you put two together reversed they can be slide against each other to vary their thickness.

the object is to have at least five shim-packs on the hinge side [top, bottom and each hinge] and about the same on lock side.

this is done before the casing is installed. to 'stablize' the jamb i place shims at the top of both the hinge side and lock side, centering the jamb, and tighten so it won't move around to much and you can open the door without it falling out of the opening.

get the hinge side set correctly, plumb and straight. you slide the shims against each other to move jamb in and out. do the same for lock side [make sure you have clearance to open and close without rubbing], making sure you set shims near the catch for the lockset. after nailing jamb [nail thru shims where possible] you can cut the shims flush with jamb and apply casing.

a good fix on a loose hinge is to use, at least, one longer screw in each hinge [on jamb] that will go thru jamb and into the 2x4 framing beyond.

A style/theme that is subdued and elegant is something that can evolve as you mature. Just because it's fashionable now doesn't mean it will be a year from now. Your aim should be something that grows with you. An easy one to pull off is black & white plus your favorite color for accent pieces or monochromatic (black, gray, white with one accent color): There are so many interesting black & white patterned bedding sets and many black & white photo posters available on-line and in stores that it is really easy to customize.

Be subtle/sedate with the color you choose for your walls. It is far easier to accent with neon-bright colors in accessories, decor items, bedding items etc (and easier on the eyes) than it would be to live and sleep in a screaming pink or hyper lime colored room.

a 14 piece bedroom set is selling for 799 dollars which includes a queen size bed, a nightstand and dresser and mirror etc..
I called the store and ask if I can downgrade to a full size in they said yes.

I'm not familiar with your part of the country, so the best I can do is advise that you check out the thrift stores, used furniture stores and resale/consignment shops in your area. A lot of times, you can find whole sets/suites (dining room, bedroom) in good condition for very reasonable prices. Often times, you can also find matched sets of lamps as well. Make sure that you bring a light bulb with you to test lamps.

Should you decide to go this route, one thing I will advise that you do is to purchase your mattress sets new and consider protecting your investments with the bed bug protection mattress covers - one each mattress and box spring. While they can be a bit on the pricey side for the bigger sized beds (queen, king), it is well worth the expense to prevent an infestation where you lose all of your upholstered furniture, beds and carpeting and have to start over again from scratch (no pun intended).

Okay so my abusive bf which im in the process of leaving ( like changing my social , phone number and dissapearing) has come back to my house(after i put him out) because his sister(who he treats like his gf) wouldnt let him stay at her house. Who cares how she spent her money? Why did you talk to your boyfriend? He should be blocked or you should have a new Tracphone with a different number that you are using since you claim you want to disappear. You should be not concerned about her ten new pairs of shoes and you should be selling your furniture to help finance your departure.

I think you need to refocus on what you are supposed to be doing and forget about him and his family. If he wants his school books all he has to do is go to the repo company and ask for it back and they will give it to him.

Building permits in San Diego County?

I am looking to build a large home addition onto my family's existing home in Escondido, California. The existing home is on about 3 acres in unincorporated San Diego County. The home currently is about 2000 square feet. I would like to build a 2nd entrance, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a kitchen, etc. all including a second story. I don't know exactly where to start. What permits do I need and where do I obtain them? I have contacted some home builders and have appointments set up for them to see the land/home but I want to do as much as possible to make sure I am prepared for this process. The answerer joana is obviously negatively biased and probably racist.
SOOO many good things about San Diego. It is expensive and there is traffic, but San Diego is Less expensive than New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Orange County. Its also got less traffic than those.
People are less fake here than most places and usually less racist (except Joana) It can be pricy, but dont move out here alone, set up room mates or bring some with you. A one bedroom apartment will go for around $800-1000, but 2 bed room apartments are usually just a hundred dollars more. Don't make the mistake of thinking "I need to live on the beach" You can move 10-20 minutes away and pay less.
Also, dont let anyone on here tell you "the further North in San Diego you move the better." There are really good areas of San Diego all over the county.
Another tip. Get accepted to college first. Then (unless you are going for the dorm, which might be better) find an apartment close enough to go to school. Remember san diego is a big county. You dont want to live in Escondido if you are going to SDSU. Try to move within 10 minutes drive from school. But if you move too close the cost will go up too. Most apartments that are "walking distance" from school are pretty expensive. San Diego is the kind of neighborhood that your gonna want a car.
Also, if you ask any more questions, BE SPECIFIC!!!
ex. If you are looking for an inexpensive apartment. say "where in san diego can i find an apartment for around this much..."
Instead of "where can i find a cheap apartment in san diego"
Say a price range.

I am moving from Norfolk VA to San Antonio TX. I have a one bedroom apartment and basically moving mine and my wifes clothes plus a bedroom set. So one bed, one nightstand, and one dresser. A 42 inch tv on a little entertainmeant center. And a 32inch tv. One A Large sofa. Plus pots and pans that's it. I called pods but that was $3356 way to expensive for me.
