do you think i got a good deal or no?

Q. okay so i had been thinking about getting a bedroom set with a brand new mattress for a while so i was looking around for a good deal and i found what i wanted at ashley furniture. by the time i paid for everything i spent $3203.00. i'll write down the price of everything right now but first let me say that they were having a anniversary sale so everything was marked down in price and they had a promo for any mattress 1499 and over u get a free 32' sony bravia lcd tv or 15% off the mattress.

for that price i got my queen size headboard, foot board, rail for 246.00
stearns & foster queen size mattress n boxspring for 1499.99
media chest for 239.00
chest for 137.00
dresser & mirror for 305.00
plus my free tv that i upgraded too a 46'' for 500.00

tax for little over 200 and deliver for 40.00 which included a 50 mile drive too my house and they completely set everything up for me in my room.

i told my parents the other day and my mom insist that i got ripped off or i could of found a better deal and that i could of looked in the classifieds for a bedroom set but i want a new one for my self not a used one.

on that tv the sale price for the 32'' was $400 but they gave me the full price credit of $500 and 46'' sale price was $750 but i paid the the full $1000 price on it but since i got a $500 credit i bought a $1000 tv for $500.

here are the links too what i bought

no it's solid wood i check it out my older brother bought a bedroom set that was made of pressed wood and it broke in no time so i knew too make sure it was solid wood. besides i could'nt find my set on the ashley website so i found it on that otherone so maybe that's the problem?

A. laminated means that if there is a ding it will look like crap. it's not solid wood, it's painted pressed wood. a wet glass can bubble up the surface, beyond repair.
1400. for a matress is very high. i got an unbelieveably great serta for $700. you almost need a step stool to get in it.
two years ago, i got a gorgeous solid wood, hand carved, 6 foot high headboard, footboard, triple dresser, tall dresser, and, night stand, all for under 2500. the style is called buckingham. it's heirloom quality. i love it. dings aren't noticeable and easily covered with ol english.
after years of having a crappy looking pressed wood bdrm set, i really love this set. it will retain much of it's value for a long time.
you have to shop around. i'm sorry, i agree with your mom.

A. thats a good deal pimpin! dont trip on tha haters its ur money and if ur happy with it everybody else can eat a dick

Should I haggle over this..? opinions pretty please!?
Q. Ashleys home furniture is having 14 piece bedroom set on sale for $799 it includes a queen mattress set plus frame, nightstand, mirror etc..
Thing is I want to downgrade to a full size bed. I called and they said I CAN get a full instead. Should I haggle down the price since I'm getting a smaller bed? Your tips on haggling??

A. That is a VERY low price for a complete set of bedroom furniture. Don't be surprised if you later find the quality to be similarly low. You could ask for a discount for the full sized bed. Would be easier to ask for free delivery. But there really isn't that much difference between full size and queen....at least not until you try to get that second person into your bed.

Why would a man think watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye?

Q.

A. It dulls the senses.

"Mike Teavee..."

(from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

"The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set
Or better still, just don't install
The idiotic thing at all.
In almost every house we've been,
We've watched them gaping at the screen.
They loll and slop and lounge about,
And stare until their eyes pop out.
(Last week in someone's place we saw
A dozen eyeballs on the floor.)
They sit and stare and stare and sit
Until they're hypnotised by it,
Until they're absolutely drunk
With all the shocking ghastly junk.
Oh yes, we know it keeps them still,
They don't climb out the window sill,
They never fight or kick or punch,
They leave you free to cook the lunch
And wash the dishes in the sink
But did you ever stop to think,
To wonder just exactly what
This does to your beloved tot?
IT ROTS THE SENSES IN THE HEAD!
IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEAD!
IT CLOGS AND CLUTTERS UP THE MIND!
IT MAKES A CHILD SO DULL AND BLIND
HE CAN NO LONGER UNDERSTAND
A FANTASY, A FAIRYLAND!
HIS BRAIN BECOMES AS SOFT AS CHEESE!
HIS POWERS OF THINKING RUST AND FREEZE!
HE CANNOT THINKHE ONLY SEES!
'All right!' you'll cry. 'All right!' you'll say,
'But if we take the set away,
What shall we do to entertain
Our darling children? Please explain!'
We'll answer this by asking you,
'What used the darling ones to do?
'How used they keep themselves contented
Before this monster was invented?'
Have you forgotten? Don't you know?
We'll say it very loud and slow:
THEY...USED...TO...READ! They'd READ and READ,
AND READ and READ, and then proceed
To READ some more. Great Scott! Gadzooks!
One half their lives was reading books!
The nursery shelves held books galore!
Books cluttered up the nursery floor!
And in the bedroom, by the bed,
More books were waiting to be read!
Such wondrous, fine, fantastic takes
Of dragons, gypsies, queens, and whales
And treasure isles, and distant shores
Where smugglers rowed with muffled oars,
And pirates wearing purple pants,
And sailing ships and elephants,
And cannibals crouching 'round the pot,
Stirring away at something hot.
(It smells so good, what can it be?
Good gracious, it's Penelope.)
The younger ones had Beatrix Potter
With Mr. Tod, the dirty rotter,
And Squirrel Nutkin, Pigling Bland,
And Mrs. TiggyWinkle and
Just How The Camel Got His Hump,
And How The Monkey Lost His Rump,
And Mr. Toad, and bless my soul,
There's Mr. Rat and Mr. Mole
Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books,
Ignoring all the dirty looks,
The screams and yells, the bites and kicks,
And children hitting you with sticks
Fear not, because we promise you
That, in about a week or two
Of having nothing else to do,
They'll now begin to feel the need
Of having something good to read.
And once they startoh boy, oh boy!
You watch the slowly growing joy
That fills their hears. They'll grow so keen
They'll wonder what they'd ever seen
In that ridiculous machine,
That nauseating, foul, unclean,
Repulsive television screen!
And later, each and every kid
Will love you more for what you did.
P.S. Regarding Mike Teavee,
We very much regret that we
Shall simply have to wait and see
If we can get him back his height.
But if we can'tit serves him right."

what are some good books for a teen?
Q. I'm fifteen and i'll read almost anything

Enter Cally Monture, an unexpected threat from a trash zip code. When their first meeting leads to tragic results, Lilith is hungry for revenge.

***House of Night by Kristin and PC Cast. The First is Marked.
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do.It's tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

**The Morganville Vampires by Rachelle Caine. The First is Glass Houses.

Suze is a mediator -- a liaison between the living and the dead. In other words, she sees dead people. And they won't leave her alone until she helps them resolve their unfinished business with the living. But Jesse, the hot ghost haunting her bedroom, doesn't seem to need her help. Which is a relief, because Suze has just moved to sunny California and plans to start fresh, with trips to the mall instead of the cemetery, and surfing instead of spectral visitations.
But the very first day at her new school, Suze realizes it's not that easy. There's a ghost with revenge on her mind ... and Suze happens to be in the way.

Other Vampire Books...
*Jessica's Guide to Dating the Dark side by Beth Fantaskey.

what color should i paint my bedroom?
Q. I have this comforter: http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/regatta-chocolate-8-piece-super-set

The doors and the trim are both stained a pecan brown, with no crown mold.

The furniture is oak, stained a light oak color.

The carpet is also brown, called "butternut," but it's not too dark. I would say that it's midway between true brown and beige.

I have this as the main print (Van Gogh Irises): http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.fineartprintsondemand.com/artists/van_gogh/irises-400.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.fineartprintsondemand.com/artists/van_gogh/irises.htm&usg=__nZbvkKolzQ1xNHLaeh0MtVbcV_s=&h=317&w=400&sz=89&hl=en&start=16&um=1&tbnid=TNCoJHKkpa0y_M:&tbnh=98&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dvan%2Bgogh%2Birises%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dopera%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DN

The room is pretty small, about 144 sq. feet, with one average window, and a queen bed and headboard with a large mirror.

I was thinking of painting it a light green, lighter than the green on the bed, to complement said comforter, and that, other than beige or ocre, are the only other colors that i think would work.

Any ideas of other colors to paint the walls to complement all this and not be too dark?

Thanks!

I think i covered it all, but if i think of anything else i'll add.

A. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to help you imagine how the colors will look together. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:
http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/

I think "adaptive shade" (# 7053) might be a great choice.

You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:
http://www.roomvues.com/
You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

A. You don't have to have all the furniture matching.
Get a small round table to use as a bed side table.
Go with a light wood.

If you want a head board, you can find fabric ones or metal ones.

Paint your room.Pick any color. Not too dark though.
You need curtains and lamps. That overhead light is useless for reading .
Remove that wall paper in the bathroom.Paint the room.

I need a bedroom set?

Q. i need a bedroom set. i have a small butget of 600. do you know of any good websites or liquidation sites?

A. Try craisglist.org, or kijiji. They're both good if you don't mind getting stuff second hand.

4 piece vintage Dixie bedroom set...?
Q. I have a Dixie bedroom set with two twin beds, a big nine drawer dresser with a detachable mirror, and a nightstand with one drawer and shelf. My godmother gave it to me but now I'm going to college and can't take it with. I know it's worth a lot but I don't know how much??? and where to advertise???. Any suggestions?? It's in EXCELLENT shape. I think it'd go good with some sort of bed and breakfast. Any idea how I should advertise to sell it or at what price? If you go to craigslist or kijiji and type in "Dixie bedset" you should be able to see pictures.
Thanks

A. maybe on ebay or check your local antique shops

where can i find prices on used bedroom furniture 11 pieces?
Q. I have a 61 yr old painted bedroom set antique white and gold includes a cedar chest , two lamps with bust one female one male; two end tables glass top covers with drawers ;a high boy dresser 6 drawers; a low boy dresser 12 drawers; a wall miiror framed; head board and footboard and rails al made from solid mahogony real wood perfect condition I need to know how much retailers sell for so i can get fair vaule for the set
i'm in philly Pa if that helps I just want ideas of what retailers are seeling similar bedroom sets for I know they are going for at least $2000 as i seen online this is solid wood mahagony with painted finish all brass fittings a real cedar chest that alone is worth at least $500 sure i can just take pictures of it and put it up on craigslist
or put an ad in my local paper but without knowing the retail value i will be cheating myself or price it too high
I really have to say for the 11 pieces at least $1000 total is fair this kind of wood furniture today would cost you $10,000 for a set like this I dont even know how the buyer is going to get it out of here each piece is large and heavy even without drawers in it the cedar chest weighs at least 100 lbs
IF i cannot get at laest $500 for this set then i will sell each piece seperately which is harder to do many people want a matched set
not sepearte pices O well hope for more answers

A. Look on the Craigslist or Kijiji listings in your area under "furniture for sale" and see what prices people are posting for old furnishings. Without seeing your set or knowing where you live, it would be hard to exactly assess the value. You could take photos of it to a used furniture or antique dealer in your area and ask what they would buy it from you for. Since they would offer you a wholesale price, you could probably double that to sell directly to an end buyer yourself.

Unfortunately, that age and style of furniture you describe is not very popular any more -- I doubt that you could get more than $400 for the entire set, and then only if it was in perfect condition.

where to find pier one furniture for less?
Q. i am in love with the pier 1 bedroom set from Hayworth. The glass looking dresser and end table. But i don't want to pay full price does anyone know where i could find it for less? i live in Calgary AB.

A. im not gonna lie its gonna be hard to find a dresser exactly like that, but from experience i can tell you that the quality of pier one's furniture is HORRIBLE!! dont do it unless u absolutely have to!! i just bought a dresser on ebay for pretty cheap and its really good, cute and solid. You should do the same and maybe spray paint it or something so that it looks like the other one.

Need decorating ideas for black bedroom furniture-please helpl?

Q. I have a small bedroom with a black bedroom set-queen bed, nightstand, dresser, and armoire. The walls are white with tan carpet. I went out and purchased a sateen black down comfort with a set of soft pink sheets but Im not sure Im going to be able to use it because there is just way way to much black. Can anyone suggest any ideas. Im just wanting a room that is pretty soft and romantic. I love the new furniture but I dont have any idea on how to decorate with it. Im not a "red" person, its never been one of my favorite colors. Any ideas on whether i should return the comforter and sheets and start over? I have no accents pieces yet so Im starting fresh.

A. pink works with black, tan works with pink, but I am not sure if you want to try all three. Maybe pull back on the pink to small items like alarm clock, bookends and such. Tan or white would be the best bet for the rest of the room. If you can paint, try a tan for 3 walls, leave 1 white and any trim white( paint is cheap and if you are renting be sure to ask first). You may want to use a throw blanket and some light decorative pillows on top of the bed to break up the black and try table runners or doylies on top of your cases. But if you are tight on money, Return the comforter and sheets to try something different.Maybe plain black and white will be pleasing, kinda go art-deco.

How do I fix a new apartment from scratch?
Q. I'm going through a divorce and have to start over again.
I really don't know where to start , with cash being tight right now.
any help would be most appreciated.
Thank You one and All.

A. Im sorry for what youre going through, that must be really difficult. however, there is a bright side! youll be out of your crappy relationship soon and on your feet in no time...

as for your question...

I had next to noooo money when I moved into my new apartment. Craigslist and IKEA were seriously lifesavers. I got a set of REALLY NICE couches on craigslist, the woman I got them from was looking to have her floors redone and just wnated them out of her house by the next morning...perfectly nice, modern looking couch and loveseat for FREE. I also got my matress set from craigslist, from some kid who was moving, spur of the moment out to cali (I live in boston) and needed to sell his almost new jordans furniture queen sized mattress and boxsprings...I got them under a year old, valued at 1200 for only 200 bucks. If you look, and you must look, and be vigilent you can seriously find the most amazing deals on craigslist. I have a beautiful apartment, all of my friends comment on how gorgeous it is when they come over for the first time, and seriously to furnish two bedrooms, living room, kitchen total I must've spend less then $1500 bucks. which, when you think of it, is a steal. and Im including the prices of flatwear, kitchen wear etc. that I got all from IKEA so inexpensively. Good luck, it can be done! You just have to be creative

Where should I get furniture?
Q. I live in Eugene, Or and want to know where to buy furniture because I've been told to never buy a bed or a couch used. Also, how much should I be spending on a bed(queen), couch, and Bookshelf if I just want cheap stuff to use in my first apartment?

A. You are in luck. You have two Big Lots stores in your area that have furniture departments. Here's the link with the map:

http://www.biglots.com/store-locator?zipCode=&city=eugene+&state=OR

Mattresses with pricing (bed frames are separate):
http://www.biglots.com/browse/furniture/mattresses/queen-mattresses

Sofas, loveseats, sectionals
http://www.biglots.com/browse/furniture/living-room/sofas-loveseats-and-sectionals?sortBy=&offset=0&max=9

You are correct in that mattresses and sofas should be bought new, whenever possible, to limit your exposure to bed-bugs and other pests. If you cannot afford brand new, at least invest in the bed bug protector covers (like protect a bed brand) for your mattress and your box spring. Basic metal bed frames go for about $80 - $100. When buying a bed, you will want to lie down on the mattress you are considering for at least 15 - 20 minutes and in every position you sleep in. The reason you are giving it that amount of time is to determine whether it's comfortable for the way you sleep or you'll end up with sore spots. (Me, I sleep either on my back or on my side. The last time we bought a mattress set, I did not test it by lying on my side for a time - because I was self-conscious. We bought within our budget and it ended up being the most uncomfortable thing to sleep on. I'd wake up in the morning with my shoulder & hip sockets sore/aching because I'd slept on my side and the mattress was firm. We later had to throw more money at it and invest in a memory foam mattress topper just so that we did not wake up sore. The moral of my story is this: Take however long you need to determine if it's going to be a comfortable bed for you before you buy it.)

Case goods like coffee/end tables, dining tables, bookcases, dressers and nightstands can be safely purchased second-hand from thrift stores, resale shops, used furniture stores. Those stores are a great option if the things you need don't have to "match" or come in sets. A lot of times, you can find good quality wood furniture at very reasonable prices. If you go with this option, you may want to cultivate a few different sources because thrift/resale shopping can be very much feast or famine: A wide variety or slim pickings. IKEA book cases are relatively inexpensive. If you'd prefer to buy it new in a box and have the pleasure of putting it together yourself, the Sauder brand is good and the directions are easy to understand. You can get those from stores like Wal-mart, K-Mart, Target and such.

Another option for case goods, housewares and lamps & such would be garage sales.

I can safely vouch for the quality of the furniture at Big Lots because I know people who bought their living room set & bedroom set from them and have been very satisfied, plus they've had it for years and it's still going strong. Good luck to you and I hope that this helps.

I want to move to Orlando when my husband becomes a Journeyman. We live in Las Vegas. Is it easy to live?

Q. to live there? and is the cost of living cheap? I don't live Las Vegas at all and feel this city isn't meant for raising children here. Me and my husband both love the beach and think Orlando is better than California. Can someone shed some light about living there?
I can transfer with my job to Orlando. or near it at least.
How far away is Orlando to the beach?

A. I've live in Orlando for nearly 40 years (Before Disney). This is a fine place to grow up and raise kids, but like all areas that have experienced growth there is pain. Crime is on the rise, but so is the population, the crime rate here is going down, as it is most everywhere. Like anywhere else there are good and bad places to live. As the metro area is vast and traffic bad it is important to try to live close to where you work.

It's not as cheap as it used to be. From 2001-2005 most every house doubled in value. It has settled back a bit, but a newer 3 bedroom place in the burbs is still going to set you back $250,000 to 300,000. Renting can be cheap, especially if it is a condo that no one will buy.

The beach is an easy day trip - 1 to 1.5 hour drive.

About how much will utilities be for a 1 bedroom apartment in Vegas ?
Q. the apartment rent is going to be about 500$ or less a month, so its not going to be a big apartment

A. It depends.... Will you be there during the day? Las Vegas can get pretty hot, and the cost of running an air conditioner adds up. You have to assume the appliances that are there, i.e. stove, fridge, dishwasher, heater, will use the most electricity. Other drains may be your computer if left on, and other drains left plugged in. Just make sure you turn off lights behind you, unplug appliances not in use, and get thermal lined curtains if your windows are not double paned. Use a microwave instead of an oven for cooking. Keep your fridge set at the minimally safe temp. for refrigeration, and use a fan ( if you can tolerate it) rather than the air conditioner. In the winter...dress for warmth, and use a heating blanket rather than the heater.

Has anyone stayed in the Paradise Tower Pool Villa rooms at the Hard Rock Las Vegas? Any review?
Q. They look great, but I can't find any reviews online. Any insight from someone who has stayed in the pool villa rooms would be appreciated. Thanks

A. Well I have not stayed there but they would be very expensive, I would imagine. Here is someone else's memory of their stay there:

"We did actually stay in the Pool Villa. It was pretty great. We didn't get the all-white one but it was 2 stories. Here's what I remember about it...it's a bit hazy

- The main area is pretty much 2 stories high and all windows facing the main (Rehab) pool. Just a couch and 2 chairs down there but a big TV and a great wet bar area where we made many drinks.
- You go up the stairs to the bedroom. There's an odd landing area that looks like it might have had a couch at some point but now it's just empty.
- The bedroom is great and the windows of it also face out toward the pool. Big king bed but it is the only bed in the place. We had a guy sleep on the downstairs couch but that was more of a "passed out" situation than on purpose.
- Two big bathrooms, one attached the the bedroom upstairs and one right when you walk in the front door downstairs.
- All of them open onto the pool area to various degrees. Ours was set down slightly from the main pool area so you had to go around little turn and up some stairs to get to the pool deck. The positive of that was that we had a little table and rounded bench area outside our pool-facing door.
- I'm sure the one-story ones are nice but they don't all open onto the pool deck so make sure you ask the reservation agent if you're going to book one of those.
- One con: they're allllllll the way down at the far end of the Paradise Tower, literally as far away as possible from the main casino area. So you'll have to hoof it a ways to get back to the casino."

What is the monthly average A/C setting in households in Las Vegas and Phoenix?
Q.

A. Las Vegas Here...It depends, it is 100 degrees outside right now and I have my air set at 78 degrees and fans running in living room and bedroom. When it gets to be 120 degrees outside I will put my air at 72 with fans. Mostly I do it this way because I have a big house and the cost of power just went up by 30% and my average power bill in the summer is 300.00 and in the winter it is 180.00. Last summer I had one month that was 460.00 because I kept the air at 70 degrees. I will never do that again!!! But if it gets too hot I jump in the pool which I have in the back yard. I am moving in mid June and cant wait.. its to hot here.. I have lived here 45 years... It's time to go. Not to mention Las Vegas has water usage restrictions.. Pretty soon they will probably limit our showers and how often we can do laundry.. It's bad, Lake Mead is receding faster than it can replenish it's self, not enough rain or snow in the Rocky Mountains.

Community: I'm soon to close down on a house and I've been looking at furniture. Can anyone help me with...?

Q. ... I'm looking to buy furniture sets for a living room, bedrooms, office and kitchen. I already have ideas as to where to go for these items. Like the bedroom set, I'd probably go to Target. The kitchen table; Rooms to Go...IKea...maybe even the living room set. Are there any stores that offer a discount for a big purchase? Ideas on where to get a durable set of living room furniture?

Any ideas are appreciated

A. All furniture stores offer sales all the time so you can do better by looking at your local furniture stores. I wouldn't choose Target for anything other than an odd piece or two but certainly not for a bedroom. Do you have an Ethan Allen, Ashley, or American Signature furniture store in your area? What about the independents in your area? I would look there first. Pottery Barn has great stuff and sales. So does Horchow and Bassett Furniture. I would take some time to look at everything before making a decision.

look at this antique dresser set and let me know what it is plz??
Q. Last year my boyfriend brought me home this vintage dresser set. At first I thought it was ugly but after a while it grew on me. The othewr day I was moving it around and i noticed a year on the back. It is from 1928. I cant seem to find anything like it anywere online!!

I would like to know what style it is, what is it actually called, and should I refinish it??
I know nothing about old furniture and desperatly need some some details!!
thank you, here is the link:
http://s304.photobucket.com/albums/nn170/joedowen1335/

also, does anyone know a good site to identify different types of wood
thank you for the info!!!!
my boyfriend actually got it out of a house that was going to be demolished!!! he workks in construcition so him and his team got to pick what they wanted. i had no clue it was worth anything at all!!!

how much do these usually sell for if it all refinished?

A. This bureau was once part of a larger bedroom suite. The style is a loose version of Adamesque or American Federal -- the swags are signature motifs of these styles. Likely it was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the furniture capitol of the world in the 1920's. It was almost entirely machine made. I suggest you DO NOT refinish this chest. The wood underneath is a very thin veneer; the paint was applied to cover problems, and actually is quite attractive. If there are a few chips, get the paint color matched (take a drawer to a paint store for a perfect color match) and make some touch ups.

Best looking sheet sets/ comforters for guys in mid 20s?
Q. I have brown colored furniture in my bedroom and am looking for a nice sheet set/comforter for my room. The walls are white but I am wanting to change that at some point, just not sure what color yet, but that's in the future. I am having trouble finding sheets and was hoping someone might have some examples they've seen online. I want sheets that are manly, but not too bachelor pady... Any ideas?? Or at least good websites for bedding?

A. First quality sheets with a muted pattern will tell anyone touching them that you are a man of good taste. In shopping for sheets, there are three main things to know.

The material must be cotton. NEVER polyester. But not just any old cotton. The best is Egyptian cotton which has long fibers about 1.5" long and very fine. But those sheets can be extremely expensive. You can still do well with American varieties of Egyptian cotton which are known as Pima cotton. Don't settle for anything less. And under no circumstances settle for sheets made in China. If you're really pressed for cash you might make do with India cotton but believe me, bare skin can really tell the difference in quality.

The next thing you need to know is about thread count -- the number of threads per inch. Higher is better and smoother and silkier. Sheets with a very high thread count tend to become softer and silkier with multiple washings which cheaper sheets will become stiffer. Be careful of claims though. Some manufacturers "double weave" and so claim a higher thread count but its really just two cheap sheets woven together so they don't have the softness and luster of true high-count sheets.

Locally, the best sheets I have found in the "under $200/set" range are Costco's Signature Kirkland brand. They come in a true 600 thread count and carry an unlimited warranty.

Oh, and Costco usually carries some very nice comforters and throws at good prices.

Sweet dreams,
Honey

the important thing to look for is the "thread count". That is the number of threads per inch of material. The higher the count, the better quality the sheet, the smoother and silkier the feel.

Any ideas for decorating a teen bedroom on a budget using the colors blue and brown?

Q. My room has this comforter in it http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Microfiber-Stripe-Reversible-3-piece-Comforter-Set/3442836/product.html and my walls are a light shade of blue. My room is also pretty small. I need some ideas for decorating my room, I really don't know what to put on the walls. Any ideas?

A. Something Organic, Black and white photos, they will support the strong graphic theme without repeating it. hope this helps :)

I'm moving into a bachelor suite and would like some suggestions for decor?
Q. there's a slight nook for my bedroom furniture set (vanity/headboard/bed), am considering finding a floor flutter screen for some privacy/separation. Already have a huge 3-seater futon, but need to purchase all other furniture. Any space-saving suggestions or pieces I should look for that could function for everyday and entertaining (i don't do huge gatherings, but usually several friends). hope this makes sense, and any suggestions would be appreciated!

A. a folding table big enough to entertain but small enough to be out of the way when folded away.

a "cupboard" for your tv/music with doors that can shut it away when you want to hide it!

Under bed drawers for extra hidden storage.

Go for light colours to create a more spacious feel.

How Do You Remove Cigarette Smoke Smell From Furniture?
Q. I inherited a very nice bedroom set. But, the person who gave it to me was a heavy smoker. I would like to know what I can use to get ride of the smoke smell? Although I believe the outside of the pieces are sealed, the insides are not.
Just to clarify, this is all wood furniture, no upholstery is involved!

A. It's an Urban Legend that Febreze is hazardous to pets. Use it on upholstery only, not wood. Old news from 1998, so disregard that hazardous to pets thing all together - that is false. You can read about it on snopes, the urban legends reference page:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/febreze.asp

Wood will absorb odors without a doubt, so the parts have been finished will need a good cleaning, maybe 3 good cleanings, to get the years of nicotine off. I would start with cleaning it with Murphy's Oil soap, the directions are right on the bottle. It smells good and is an excellent wood cleaner. You dilute it with water and it's very gentle stuff.

If any of the furniture is upholstered, you can have that professionally steam cleaned to get rid of the smell. The same people that clean carpets can come to your home and clean anything else that is upholstered, so you might want to call and ask them about it.

Over time the smell does fade, but you'll have to keep up with the Murphy's oil soap to keep the wood nice and clean. I used it on wood floors and furniture. Go ahead and try febreeze on upsholstery, but keep it off the wood.

Best of luck to you.

Where is are with the most furniture shops here in Malaysia?
Q. Looking for bedroom set / dining table, cheap but sturdy something that can last for about 2-3 years will do. Thanks in advance.

A. Well, I don't know what would be cheap for you yet sturdy...

I would like to say IKEA but there are just some items there that are not sturdy like bookshelves and some tables...some items was bought at IKEA.

What my parents did was just kept on hunting around any furniture shops. Until they found quite some pieces...and at a affordable price too.

How much money will I need to move to Germany?

Q. I need to know how much moo-la I will need to live in Germany. I mean after I get there. How much will I need for food and a place to live? How much do I need to make in a month/week to be able to live decently? I am going to be there for 2-3 years.

A. Well lets it does depend on the comfort you are looking for.if you are happy with a single bedroom and a shared kitchen or something, you may find something for 300-400euros,so lets say if you earn upto a 1000euros you will have enough money to manage the rest of the motnh. As food is a bit cheaper than in the UK,Holland,Belgium and France.
But lets say you want a 1 or 2 bedroom appartment, you will be safe when you make between 1200-1500 euros every month. (Normally you should ahve enough to pay gas, electricity, water, tax, food, phoenbills, intenretconnection and you can even set a bit aside)But please know all does depend on where you want t olive, example Berlin,in the middle of the centre is a lot more expensive than in the suburbs. or smaller towns.Thats a rule that applies all over the world.

Hope this helps.

How many bedrooms should we expect to get on base (AF)?
Q. My husband will commission as an Air Force officer in April and our first assignment will be in LA. He will just be a 2nd lieutenant and we are pregnant with our first baby (won't come until August). Does one child make a difference in the number of rooms you get on base as an 0-1?

I haven't been able to get an account with the AF Crossroads yet, but there seem to be a lot of military people on Yahoo Answers so I really appreciate your help!

A. you qualify for a 2BR.. that being said, 99% of the time there are no 2 BR units set aside for officers so you can expect to get a 3 BR.

technical rules are: under six share a room, under 12 same gender share a room and everybody 12 and up gets their own room. Practically speaking: stateside: one BR per kid, plus one for you.

assuming you can even GET on base housing. the waiting list can be quite long/... 2 years...

How much does it cost per month to live in Los Angeles?
Q. I hope to move out to L.A. this summer, and i have a couple thousand dollars. I am looking for a one bedroom apartment, and I will be splitting the cost of that with my roommate. I want to factor in costs such as groceries, transportation, and I want to live in a nice safe place. How much should I expect to pay per month?

A. You need a plan: First item on the agenda is rent. A decent 1BR apartment in LA currently goes for $1200, give or take. Nicer areas and areas closer to the beach are much higher. Don't expect to move to Santa Monica and get an apartment on the beach for that much. Or Toluca Lake, or Beverly Hills.

Next, you will need a car. Los Angeles is VERY spread out, and train service is extremely limited. If you don't have a car, you will have to take a bus, which takes 3 times longer to get anywhere than a car.

All told, it generally takes about $3,000 per month to live here. If you don't have a job that pays that much or skills that can get you that kind of job, stay where you are. If you are unskilled and work for minimum wage (or for tips like bartending or waiting tables), you'll only make about $1200 per month.

And speaking of jobs, they are rather hard to come by now. College grads seeking employment are having a very tough time of it right now, since the job market is flooded with experienced people who were laid off. Unemployment is over 12% right now. Not exactly the kind of job market you want to move into.

Finally, you will need money. Landlords want first month's rent and a security deposit up front. You'll need money for food, transportation, utilities, etc. The consensus in this forum is that you need about $7500 to start out.

So there's your plan. And please don't tell us that you have dreams of being an actor or singer. That sets off another alarm. We already have a million (literally) wannabe actors in this town. Dont even get me started.

What do you thinkg about the resorts shopping nightlife in mazatlan mexico?
Q. Has anyone stayed at El Cid El Moro Beach hotel? We booked a 2 bedroom 3 bathroom condo/villa for a week. Is the hotel up to date? How are the condos set up? How is the night life in and around the area of the resort? are there any malls/duty free shopping? Where can we find an affordable fishing charter? where are the good spas restaurants and clubs? are the Deer, stone and bird islands worth visiting?

A. ummm nope i usually stay with family over there but the night life is great they have a nice club that looks like a castle its called el valentine it always has a good amount of people always packed during spring break mazatlan has the biggest natural bord walk and theres always something to do there the beaches are Beautiful. for shopping i would go to el cenrto always see tourist there. for stone island or "isla de la perda" i dont go there for the wild life but the beach is nice there fun with the bananas (youll see wat i mean) and the fresh sea food is amazing you can also rent atvs and just go riding around the community there. now for fishing if you guys just wana catch something and have a good time and a good meal i recommend the bibi fleet in marina mazatlan its not too pricey but i dont look like a tourist so the price may change but it should be about150 for 5 hours good sight seeing good fishing try to haggle with the price so you wont get ripped off go to marina mazatlan shop#8 . food is great panama is a good restaurant shouldn't be hard to find just ask people its popular with the tourist. have fun mazatlan is nice hope you enjoy your self mostly evey thing is on the bord walk the clubs real close

What are some tips to clean your house fast?

Q. Bathrooms, Kitchens (Our dishwasher is broken, by the way), Bedrooms, Living Room, anything!

A. If your home is really messy right now, set aside a day that you can devote to tidying it up completely to make it presentable. Just the basics like picking up clutter, dirty laundry in a pile near your washer (separated), maybe start laundry if you feel ambitious too, dust all surfaces with something like a swiffer duster (love those!), and wash the dishes.

Some tips on QUICK and easy cleaning ideas that really work for me (as with everyone else on the planet, I have a jam packed schedule and not much time to clean):

1 - I have 2 Swiffer Wet Jet's in my home and plenty of supplies for them. One upstairs and one on our main floor. They are God's answer to those of us who hate to mop! Although I am saving up for that steam cleaning mop being advertised all the time since there are no chemicals for it. Easy to just pull it out if you spill anything.

2 - For dusting basic items, I swear by the Swiffer duster (no, I don't work for Swiffer, LOL). No spray necessary, quick and easy plus it works well. Keep one on each floor of your home or each large area so it's easy to get to.

3 - Vacuum often to keep allergens and dust out of the house. We use a bag less vacuum and empty it after each use.

4 - As was said before, once your home is neat, KEEP it that way by cleaning as you go. One thing that our family does is whenever we leave a room, we look around to see if there are any items that need to be put away and bring them with us to do so. Honestly, upkeep takes literally minutes whereas cleaning up everything in a rush is stressful and a pain in the butt. Make your bed each morning, take dirty laundry directly to where you keep it or near the washing machine (don't forget to separate into different piles), wash your plate or cup right after use, OH, and use the same cup all day if you can to avoid extra dishes to clean.

5 - This is just a personal preference, but I get loads of compliments from doing it, have a collection of Yankee Candles (you can get them online if there is not a store nearby) and light them when you are home. I have tried other scented candles and these are the very best IMO. The Clean Cotton scent is very nice and smells really fresh.

All in all, prior planning is the key. My mom is a cleaning fanatic, so bad that when she hired a maid service she had to re-clean everything they did once they left! So, every day I look at my house and say to myself, "If my mom just showed up unannounced this very minute, would I be proud or would I be mortified by the state of my home?" That's usually enough for me to get off my butt and clean up, LOL! Oh, and for motivation, watch the show "Hoarders" or "How Clean is your House?".

I have tons of tricks for specific cleaning issues that make tough jobs easy, so if you have something specific, please feel free to send me a note! Good luck!

what are good ways to make my room more homey?
Q. my room is rather large, but seems very dull and lifeless compared to the bedrooms of my friends. I'm really not sure what it is about them that makes them seem so cozy, but im dying to have my room be cozy and homey. Any decoration suggestions?
p.s. painting my walls are out of the question, they are already a sea foam pearl (blue/green) color.
thanks to anyone who answers, and please don't answer if you don't know.
xoxo

A. Photos of you with your friends and family. Also, large nonflowering plants and other wall hangings and find a small, very soft rug with alot of colors that you like and tassles around the edges. Also, you could go to an "Earthbound" or some other funky foreign stuff store and pick one thingy, religious icon or statue of an animal and set it up as the mascot of your room. Do go by the Yankee candle and pick a signature scent for your room. Think about it. You will figure something out.
Cheers!

isn't it funny that everyone out of the state of ohio pretty much guarantee LBJ is leaving?
Q. he says he wants to win multiple championships and you think he will do that New York?!?! LMFAO

look,he says he loves it here...and this is HIS HOME!!! also keep in mind

new york<cleveland

shut up knick fans, he likes the yankee's because they are the yankee's, does anyone even give a crap that there is a new york knicks team?!?

A. They are fools.
He DID say he wants to be the first billionaire player. So what? That means what?
Does that mean he will take less years and less money to play for a lousy NY team?
Why?
The Cavs CAN and WILL give him MORE YEARS and MORE DOLLARS.
Espn reported that NY can give him approximately 5 years at 90-95 million. They also reported that Clevelanad will offer him as a FIRST offer 6 years at 135 million. Any offer made to James will be matched and increased by the Cavs.
And one poster said he loves NY? Does he love it so much he just had a ENORMOUS 5 acre 35, 440 square foot 11 bedroom Castle built from scratch to accomodate his own tastethat just happens to be located in close distance from the Cavaliers brand new $25 million dollar training facility? I love the fact that his childrens mother says it is "The only place I would ever want to live"
Hmmmm....
This is a guy that lives year round in Ohio. Not just an Ohio renter. Huge ties to Ohio/ Akorn and Cleveland. I assure you he loves his homestate more then NY.
NY will come to him, the money, the deals, the movies-whatever he wants. He can set in Ohio and collect NYC dollars.
And to the poster above...Cleveland is ran very very professional. Great owner who will throw money around like it's growing on trees-players get the best practice facility and ameneities in the NBA. Other players from other teams have said they are jealous of all the Cavs amenities (Jason Kidd, McGrady, Pierce, Parker). I think they would know better then you.

What was Obermann's Ratings...?
Q. ...in bed. Not very good she says.

KEITH GETS LOW RATINGS IN BED

October 9, 2006 -- A BROWN-haired beauty who claims she had an unsatisfying one-night stand with Keith Olbermann is getting her sweet revenge - she's launched a blog to warn other women about the acerbic MSNBC commentator's boorish bedroom habits.

The bitter babe, who calls herself KarmaBites1, says she doesn't want others "to fall into the same trap . . . and I want him to feel some remorse for what he's done . . . He sets his mind on a woman, lures her in, and once he gets what he wants, he refuses to ever speak to them again. And I don't think he understands the damage he's caused."

A 30-something office worker of Caribbean descent, KarmaBites1 said she struck up an e-mail friendship with Olbermann, whom she admired, and agreed to fly to New York to meet him last May. She says he came to her hotel room and opened a bottle of Merlot which he "spilled all over." Then, when "sexual activity began [in] less than an hour," Olbermann had difficulty. "I pretended he knew what he was doing," the embittered blogger writes. "I adored the guy. I didn't want him to think he was a dud in bed," so she faked experiencing ecstasy.

Next, he piled on excuses as to why he had to leave. "He told me he's an insomniac and that it's hard for him not to sleep in his own bed. He also mentioned he hadn't had 'company' in a while. [He said] he had an early meeting with the Yankees [and] he might be allergic to the pillows in the hotel bed."

Six days later, she claims, Olbermann e-mailed her to tell her never to contact him again. "I practically begged him to explain what I did wrong. I told him I deserved some kind of explanation for such a dismissal, but I never heard from him again." She said she's since heard from six other women who say they had brief sexual relationships with Olbermann.

She named her blog forthisreliefmuchthanks.blogspot.com, after a line from "Hamlet" she says the perennial bachelor quoted.

Olbermann's spokeswoman said she'd get back to us, but didn't.

Arvis, are you serious. O'Reilly has been No. 1 for a long long time and olb. has been last for a long time. Check the ratings the next time they come out.

A. I am amazed that anyone even watches that idiot.

I'm surprised he even has a show. Rumor is, that MSNBC is thinking about cancelling MSNBC due to poor ratings

Where do people buy "real" furniture in Southern California?

Q. I want to buy a bedroom set that will last, preferably for at least a couple generations, in solid wood. I don't want Ikea or anything like that. Where do you buy your furniture? Any tips on good, discount furniture?

A. Ethan Allan has really good stuff, but its really expensive. Stuff made out of real wood (not pine or particle board) is fairly pricey. Wicks has some decent stuff. We priced out a nice mahogany bedroom set there with a queen sleigh bed, highboy dresser, and a pair of nightstands which came out to about $3500. I'd say stay away from Levitz. I bought a recliner from them that fell apart within 2 years. My wife fell in love with a sleigh bed from Thomasville. without the matress it was $2500. I found a guy on ebay selling the exact same bed that was 6 months old for 1500 with a nice beauty rest matress. I went for it, but had to pay a few hundred to have it shipped from NYC to Los Angeles. You might try that though, look around in the high-dollar stores, note the maker and model number then look to see who might have it on ebay or maybe an internet retailer.

I have a few antique pieces that I would like to add to an estate sale of a reputable estate auction company.?
Q. I live in St. Louis, MO.

Any suggestions from people with experience with this kind of thing would be gratefully appreciated.

I have four Barrister bookcases, a huge African Mahogany dining table with ten matching chairs, a solid wood cherry executive desk, a mahogany bedroom set with two twin bed frames and two dressers plus a few other pieces.

A. Look in you local phone book and visit some of their sales. Ask the people that hired them. They may even have references you could check. I'd go back where the sale was and ask. Check the local BBB too. Good luck.

I need some ideas to paint my room. Please help i cant decide what color to use?
Q. I have a mahogany traditional bedroom set and two of my walls are dark brown so my room looks very dark when i just go into my room. i want to decorate my room and bathroom w/ blue and brown and i want it to match. i love those two colors toghter but i think that it would only look right with modern bedroom sets. Please help me with some coloring ideas

A. A pale blue would look absolutely gorgeous against the dark mahogany wood and looks great in a modern or traditional environment

A color I have used in the past that I always thinks looks stunning is First Dawn by Dulux.

I find it really lightens and brightens any room, so your room will not feel so dark, even if you wanted to keep your brown walls.

A pale blue is perfect for decorating bathrooms too, so you will be all set...

Wishing you lots of luck in your decorating - hope you enjoy the results!

Where can I see samples of vintage Drexel Furniture types online?
Q. In cleaning out my grandparents' basement, I discovered several beautiful, well-preserved pieces of vintage Drexel mahogany furniture. There is a six piece bedroom set, a desk, and a buffet (sideboard). According to my mother, this furniture was purchased around 1930. I want to determine which line these pieces came from, so that I can research the value. Does anyone know of an online (or other) resource with detailed photos of antique fine furniture lines?

A. You might try looking at ebay.com, and not just the auction stuff, but the stores, too. If the pieces are solid mahogany and not mahogany veneer, they might be worth a good bit of money. You may wish to send photos to one of the auction houses (Sothebys or Christies) for an estimate of their value; they will know which line the pieces are.

Is it possible for a baby scorpion to be in the United States homes?

Q. I found a baby scorpion in my sons room tonite crawling from under the bed. I live in a two bedroom apartment in dallas, tx. I have looked up some info on this creature and found that they are found commonly in the middle eastern and Africa. So why is it here. Maybe it is lost. Should I be worried that the parents aren't to far behind. His color was light brown with dark spots on the claws. what should I do.

A. As so many of the answerers stated, yes, scorpions are abundant in The U.S. Not to mention that there are various species as well. Anyway, you have a lot of thorough responses. What I have to offer is an easy way to catch them and dispose of them, if you are like me and don't want to harm them. Take a large jar and put it over the scorpion, gently slide a thin piece of cardboard or plastic under the jar. Make sure the entire opening is covered and the scorpion is on the cardboard/plastic. Then quicky flip the jar over, holding the cardboard/plastic firmly against the rim of the jar. Now that the jar is upright, you can remove the cardboard/plastic. The scorpion cannot climb up the side of glass. Then you can punch holes into the lid and seal the jar. Now compare to pics from one of the sites that were offered by other answerers, and you can show your children, neighbors, and friends and tell them all about that species. I am not aware of any scorpions in the U.S. that are deadly, but it does pay to be cautious, some people have problems with ant bites and bee stings. You could set the scorpion free out in the woods somewhere. You can catch spiders this way too. Good luck.

High for an electricity bill in Dallas, TX?
Q. Just wondering if $115 is a lot for a month's electricity bill in a 2nd floor one bedroom apartment? I keep it set from 78-79 most of the time. The lowest I have ever gone was 77, and that's rare. I thought it would be around $70-80 a month.
Thanks, I guess it just seemed a little high. I'm coming from California where I didn't have an electricity bill.

A. That a normal price to pay.

CAN THUNDER SHATTER HOME WiNDOWS?
Q. Is thunder strong enough that if a REALLY hard one comes that it can shatter home windows?I live in a 2 story house in dallas,tx and sometimes thunder gets loud and usually when there is a T-storm there is just this one LOUD EAR POPPING CAR/HOUSE ALARM setting off thunder and it shakes the windows real good so can thunder shatter windows and has it happened to you? Thanks

A. Lightening hit about a block from our house and the thunder knocked our bedroom window out. I was laying on my back on the bed and ended up with shattered glass all over me.

I doubt that thunder could knock out a double pane window however. Ours was a single pane.

If you are worried about it and you have a fat wallet, you can put transparent security window film on the glass. It cannot shatter after that. See the link below.

And best to you, have a great day down there in beautiful Dallas.

What's the big deal if I wash a bedspread that says "dry clean only" in my washing...?

Q. ...machine?
I mean, really, can I really hurt it? How?

A. The problem is that you don't know WHY they declared it "Dry Clean Only."

It's entirely possible that you can wash it safely--OR, that it'll ruin it in one of several possible ways, and chances are you won't know until you try. So... you got to ask yourself...Do you feel lucky? (sorry. Clint Eastwood moment there.)

Some information that would be important for determining how washable this comforter would be include size, fabric content of the shell, filler content (batting or down? Hollo-fil?), place of manufacture, approximate year of manufacture, some information on the weave of the shell, color/pattern, and surface.

Here are some of the reasons it might NOT work well--
Color-fastness. The dyes might not be stable, and could bleed or fade or splotch. This is of greater concern for older hand-made/ethnic fabrics than for most modern machine made and dyed textiles, but it's a possibility. Cold water will minimize problems with this, and adding salt to the water (2 cups or so) can help "set" some dyes. Shrinkage--this is a bigger risk than color-fastness. Most fabrics are mostly shrink resistant in cold water. Construction--the fabrics some comforters are made from are of an unstable enough weave that seams will open or cording pull away from the edge seams if they're put unter the physical stress of laundering. Fill shift--comforters that are meant to go through laundering rather than dry-cleaning have more construction that holds the "fill" in place. If you wash comforters that don't have good hold points for the fill (batting-types as opposed to down), it can shift and wad up and the comforter will not be even and smooth again--you'll have thin and thick patches. Down or feather fills are generally launderable, but there are issues with drying--the down or feathers must be re-fluffed and re-distributed. Air cycle in a big dryer with a clean tennis shoe is the classic method for this, but the down would need to be shaken down in the channels and re-distributed after the tennis show treatment loosens the clumps. Fabric "finish." Washing could remove the comforter's chemical-based finishes--these are added to the fabric to improve wrinkle-resistance and the fabric's body and "hand." (literally how the fabric feels). Sizings (starch is the home-applied version--commercial finishes last longer!) and finishes, when they're washed away, leave a formerly crisp fabric limp, and can trun a smooth-surfaced fabric into a wrinkled mess. Rayons are notorious for turning into masses of wrinkles that--on a garment--you can iron smooth again, but a comforter isn't something you can iron, and i'd bet steaming would give you mised results. Size--home washing machines are much more apt to be able to easily handle a twin-sized comforter than they are a Queen--or especially!--a king or california king size! The comforter would have been declared "Dry Clean Only" simply because it's big and bulky enough that running it through a wash cycle will leave those "too big a load, not enough agitation, not enough rinse cycle" greyish fiber or detergent spots all over it. An industrial washer--the big drum tumbler kind--can help this, and would put less stress on the comforter than an agitator would--but if it's a California king you might have trouble finding one big enough! That's what I'd be looking at.

To make the decision, what it boils down to for me would be--how much did I spend on the comforter, how critical is it to the decor of the bedroom, just how dirty IS it?, how unhappy I'm going to be if it doesn't work, and is there a "dry clean by weight" dry-cleaner in my area.

If you can locate a dry-cleaner who does dry-cleaning on a "per-pound" basis (these cleaners don't press per-pound dry-cleaning orders, and sometimes you can get lots of cleaning done for only a couple of bucks per pound--a good option for doing several heavy or bulky items in prep for off season storage, for example), I'd be thinking about that, before I'd run it through the washing machine.

I need a bedroom makover please help me?
Q. I have a small bedroom...i Want to be able to relax and do my homework in....it needs to be very organzied....and i want a tropical feel

A. A big trick a lot of people over look when re-doing small rooms is the use of mirrors! Now Im NOT saying go and PUt floor to ceiling mirrors in your room, but when your in a small room, simply just adding a mirror to the wall makes the room feeling a lot More open.

So since you have a small room painting the walls a dark color would be a bad idea! Dark colors cause rooms to feel smaller and sometimes cramped! So for your room I would suggest a cream color or an off-white:

http://www.framingsupplies.com/images/Crescent/Misc/WhiteSampler.jpg

Any of those would work! The off white lets the room feel open, and also symbolizes the sand of a tropical Paradise!
If that's too boring and you want to get a little more interesting with the wall color go with a light or pastel blue:

http://www.bubblyfunk.co.uk/images/Cardstock%208x8%20Pastel%20Blue.JPG

This is a fun color, but still keeps the room feeling open!

Now since you want tropical, and you want a place to do your homework, a desk is essential! Having a wicker plain white desk Gives it that clean, organized feel, but still keeps the room fun and tropical:

http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/63/01/16/81/0063011681107_215X215.jpg

Also a white wicker bed frame would be ideal to continue the look throughout the room. I don't know what size bed you have. Queen.? Twin? But as long as you understand the white wicker than that's fine:

http://maggymoon.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/180-classic-white-rattan-bed.jpg

This is a JcPenny Bed set! Well priced. Its comfortable well made and simple. So as you get older if you don't like tropical anymore you wont have to change your bed set you can just change the theme:

http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=1649c84&DeptID=70750&CatID=77512&SO=0&x5view=1&Ne=4294957900+877+1031+1007+580+8+966+18+904+949+833&pagesize=1&shopperType=G&N=4294940584&Nao=0&PSO=0&CmCatId=70750|77512

I'm not sure weather you are a boy or a girl, but those bed sets have different colors. For the boys I would recommend the blue and brown one. The blue will go well with the wall. For the girls I would choose the yellow, pink, and orange one. IT would be fun and symbolize the sunset.

Since you don't have a lot of room in your room. I suggest adding a lot of wall decoration! One way to get GREAT wall decorations (And have a lot of fun doing it) Is for you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/friends/family to take a ton of pictures! I don't know about you, but I love taking pictures! Or you could get pictures you print off from online that have to do with the beach. Surfboards, sunsets, birds, etc. Then once all of your pictures are printed go and get frames for them! They don't have to be the same frame! Then get spray paint (the same white that is in your room) and spray paint all of the frames! Then put the pictures in the frame and hang them in a similar set up like this: (except with more pictures or course!)

http://www.manobluedesign.com/manoblueblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/picture-1.png

It will look really modern and cool! It also will be a lot of fun taking the pictures AND will add a personal touch to your room! Also when painting your room, have the doors and trim stay white. If you do choose the yellow comforter your walls can be the orange that matches your bed set.

If you want to add more fun stuff to your walls go and buy a stencil. For guys you could get a stencil of a surfboard that matches the color of your bed set! And for girls, you could get the stencil of a tropical flower! Pink maybe that matches yours! Also you said you wanted to feel relaxed. I quick and simple thing that could make your room feel relaxed is adding a simple water feature! :

However, the enemy nation of the god Seiryuu has manipulated Yui into becoming the priestess of Seiryuu. As enemies, the former best friends begin their long struggle to summon their respective gods and obtain their wishes.

Ayashi No Ceres ~ Aya and her twin brother Aki thought they were going to a celebration of their sixteenth birthday at their grandfather's home, but the funeral-like atmosphere tips them off that something's not right. Grandfather Mikage announces that Aki will be heir to the Mikage fortune, and Aya must die! But Aya has allies in the athletic cook and martial artist Yûhi, and the attractive, mysterious Tôya. But can even two handsome and resourceful guys save Aya when it's her own power that's out of control?

Red River ~ A seemingly ordinary modern day teenager, Yuri, is suddenly whisked away to the Hittite empire in ancient Anatolia, where an ambitious queen wants the girl for a blood sacrifice in order to murder all heirs but her son, thus seizing control of the throne. Luckily, the timely intervention of Prince Kail saves Yuri from the queen's grasp. Kail promises to send Yuri back to her home, but the queen's persistent schemes to kill them both, plus their growing feelings for each other, keep those plans delayed.

Kanata Kara ~ On her way home from school one day, Noriko is unexpectedly plunged into a strange and extraordinary fantasy world. Her troubles compound exponentially when she is rescued and befriended by a handsome young man by the name of Izark. He may be brave and courageous, but inside Izark lurks the darkest evil imaginable. And according to an ancient prophecy, Noriko possesses the power to unleash that evil. Now, inexorably bound together, these two unlikely allies must navigate a world both wondrous and hostile.

Heres some you may like:
Itazura Na Kiss ~ Ever since she entered high school, Kotoko Aihara wanted to be in the same class as Naoki Irie. The only problem, Irie is the smartest student in school while Kotoko is one of the dumbest. Now in 3rd year high school, she still isn't there. One day, her home gets destroyed and the only place else to go was to Irie's home. Now that she lives close to him, will their relationship be the same, or will it become greater than it is.

Marmalade Boy ~ All Miki Koishikawa wanted was an ordinary family and that's exactly what she had until her parents decided to move in with another couple and turned Miki's world upside down. Now she lives in a house with four parents and her totally cute stepbrother Yuu. It's bad enough being brought into her parents' strange soap opera, but Miki will star in a soap of her own as she deals with friends having affairs, trying to survive in school and ending up torn between her long-time crush, Ginta, and her new stepbrother!

Hana Kimi ~ Japanese-American track-and-field star Mizuki has gotten herself to transfer to a high school in Japan...but not just any school! To be close to her idol, high jumper Izumi Sano, she's going to an all-guys' high school...and disguising herself as a boy! But as fate would have it, they're more than classmates...they're roommates! Now, Mizuki must keep her secret in the classroom, the locker room, and her own bedroom. And her classmates--and the school nurse--must cope with a new transfer student who may make them question their own orientation.

Hana Yori Dango ~ Tsukushi Makino, a working-class girl, attends an elite elevator school called Eitoku Academy, populated by children from rich, high-society families. She is the "weed" of the school surrounded by all the rich kids including the "Flower" Four (F4). The F4 leader and son of the wealthiest, most powerful family in Japan, Tsukasa Domyoji, takes an interest in Tsukushi, because she is the only girl at Eitoku who doesn't fawn over him. However, his hot-headed nature and bullying ways are originally a major turn-off for Tsukushi, who has her sights set on someone else.

Re-decorating Help!!?
Q. So I'm a 16-year-old girl and I'm redoing my room. Furniture and all!

I have a twin size matress and I can't get a new one but other than that, I can get new. I need new furniture, bedding, wall paper/color and anything you can think of!

could you help me think of some ideas? any color themes or styles you like?!

I was looking at this for furniture..http://www.raymourflanigan.com/hadley-4pc-queen-bedroom-set-597047705.aspx
What do you think? what colors go well with it or do you have any other suggestions?

PLEASE help! i have such a childish room and i really want something more sophisticated.
Thanks (:

A. I think sophisticated equals modern. I know of a site that has really stylish, modern furniture for really affordable prices. The quality of their furniture is built to last and modern furniture never goes out of style. So you can keep it for years to come.
