How much does an RN make living in Hawaii?
Q. Also how much can a person making that wage afford to spend per month on rent. I am a Caucasian with two children that will be moving to Hawaii in 2010, just now beginning to plan! Where are the best places to live?

A. I think 60K is a pretty good estimate for a starting point & depending on your skill set, what kind of job you have, If you works nights, etc, it could be > 100K/year.

You can probably count on spending at least 2K in 2008 dollars for a 2 or 3 bedroom apt. If you have kids in school, you will want to work w/ someone who is knowledgeable about school districts when you decide where to live. There are many parts of the island where I would be very comfortable living as an adult, but I would not want to send kids to the public school in that area. I think you would want to be sure that there were a fair number of haole (Caucasian) kids at the school to help your kids fit in. Hawaii Kai would be a good bet, but it is one of the more expensive neighborhoods.

In responding to what some of the other posters have said...
Many people who move here do not fit in well for a variety of reasons. There have been several posts on YA recently about racism in Hawaii. I would recommend typing that into the search box to see what people have had to say on the subject. Some people move from the mainland & fit in w/o a lot of difficulty. That has been my experience. Others have a tougher time & a lot of folks do move back before 2 years. In my experience, if you make it > 2 years, you are likely to remain here. I will acknowledge that it is much harder for school aged kids to make the transition than it is for little kids or adults. Not being comfortable in a multicultural environment is not the only reason some folks don't stay. "Rock fever" is another reason, though I have never minded living on an island in the middle of nowhere.

PS... fwiw, I forgot to mention that the major Honolulu hospitals are all unionized

What are some DIY or home decor ideas for pea green paint?
Q. I have a full can of pea green paint and nothing to do with it. I was going to use it on my walls but after i bought it i realized it wouldn't look very good with what i have in the room, I also don't want to buy a whole new set of furniture but i don't want to waste the paint either. I love doing DIY projects and crafty things but i can't seem to think of a good project to use the paint any ideas?

A. You can try to alter the color by adding white or other bases or you can try and work with it like these picture did..

What plant should I get for my bedroom that can grow edible fruit?
Q. Nothing that requires too much care but I really want a plant that grows nuts, fruit or something.
(as you can tell I don't know that much about plants)

A. good edibles don't grow in the shade of an inside room.... you'd have to have an amazing ammount of sunlight coming in your windows ALL YEAR or have a 'grow light' set up in order to grow anything edible.....

here's a growlight setup.... got room for it?...

that one just gets little seeds to sprout little plants... to grow them thru to harvest it's like this....

you'll notice that these are mostly herbs, lettuce etc....but if you do want to give it a shot, I suggest a cherry tomato ....

oh, wait.. you said 'not too much care'...

all plants grown inside require care... how much is not too much?....
