How come with my Line 6 Spider III 150W amp cannot go without losing quality when i turn it up?

Q. on one of my solo channels where i have re-verb and a bit of delay. if i push the volume knob past the bit between quarter and half way it starts decreasing in sound quality,
what can i do?

A. Ahhh, welcome to the world of digital modeling amps. Where things don't always behave the way you would expect them.

Your description of what's happening is very vague. When you say that you're loosing sound quality, what is that? Does the high end go away? Does the bass get muddy? It would have been nice to have more details other than what you gave us.

I've been playing modeling amps since 1999, and here are a few things to keep in mind:

- In digital modeling amps, things can be done to the signal that can't happen in a normal analog amp. Gains can be much higher, and EQ settings more extreme. Just because you can put enough bass on a sound to rattle the dishes in the kitchen doesn't mean that you should.

- Most people go way overboard on gain and effects in a modeling amp. A setting of "7" on the gain of a Marshall JTM-45 is very different than "7" on the Insane model on your Line 6.

- And speaking of the Insane model...forget it's there. In a live setting with a band, it's totally useless. It just comes out as white noise. Line 6 put that in their amps for solo bedroom players...that's it.

- However much distortion your think you need, cut it in half. Then, think about cutting it in half again.

- Did I mention how bad the Insane model is?

- When you're developing a patch, turn off all the effects. Get the basic amp sound down first. Then, and only then, start adding reverb, delay, chorus, etc.

- On every Line 6 amp I've ever owned, the 95% of the factory patches are useless. They're over-overdriven, over-effected, and over-EQ'd pieces of garbage that are there to show off what the amp can do and have no use in a live situation.

- The Insane model sucks....still.

Finally, keep in mind that the sound of the amp will change significantly as the volume you play at changes. If you develop a patch that sounds good at a low level, it will sound bass-heavy with a shrill top end when you turn it up. This has to do with the way the frequency response of our hearing changes depending on the sound pressure level of the sound. Do a search on the Fletcher-Munson curves if you want to know more about this phenomenon. But, suffice it to say that you have to tweak your patches at performance level.

I could go on for days on this subject, but this should get you started.

Good luck.

Can anyone help me with advice on giving my cats a pill?
Q. I have 1 big cat that does not like to be given frontline so I know giving him a pill will be very hard...I don't even know how to do this, I have tried to put it in the food and he will not touch it, he knows! My other cat is pretty easy, it is the male that has to take 1 1/2 pills so any advice would be great! Thanks

A. 1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrive cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear
paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of 10.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe.
Call spouse from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, holding front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold cats head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep
shattered figurines from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with its head just visible from below spouse's armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, dring glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retriev cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges.
Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetnus shot. Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road.
Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid
cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind
tightly to leg of dining table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from
shed. Force cat's mouth open with small spanner. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 1/2 pint of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Get spouse to drive you to emergency room; sit quietly while
doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from
right eye.

15..stop by pet store on they way home to buy a Dog..

Any tips on getting a kitten to sleep all night?
Q. We gave our 10 year old daughter a Burmese Kitten for her birthday. She's a lovely cat but she is keeping our daughter awake at night so I was wondering if anyone had any tips how to get kitty to sleep all night? I managed it with two children but don't think the same techniques will work with a kitten!

A. This is typical behavior for kittens (and many adult cats) and shouldn't be discouraged. Rather than trying to make the kitten sleep all night (which is usually impossible) give the kitten things to keep her occupied in another room. Kittens need a lot of entertainment, and they can be perfectly happy playing by themselves, but they need toys, cat trees, scratching posts and other items to keep them occupied or they will get into mischief (or keep you awake!).

Make sure kitty has plenty of toys and a nice cat tree with a sisal scratching post in a room other than the bedroom (a spare bedroom or den). Make sure there is nothing in that room that can injure the kitten while she's playing at night when everyone is asleep. If you close the door kitty will need her litter box and food & water, but as she gets older she should always have access to the whole house.

The cat trees/scratching posts need to have a good sturdy base so it won't tip over when kitty gets a little bigger. Examples:

Cardboard boxes, paper bags, wadded up pieces of paper and ping pong balls are good toys also.

Give the kitten a good work out with an interactive toy before you go to bed. My cats recommend this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3261+1897+11643&pcatid=11643

Also tiny felt mice, tiny feathery toys, small mylar crinkly balls...

Does anybody have any good ideas for decorating a teen room.?
Q. im open for anything soo tell me your ideas thanks :)
im a 13 year old and im a girl so i dont want anything to girly... so if u have any ideas just let me know. Thanks :)
im a 13 year old girl and i like a lot of different things so if u have any ideas fell free to tell me what they are thanks :)

A. 1: Don't paint the room too dark. Despite what television and movies may say, most of us have small bedrooms and painting it dark will make it seem even smaller.

2: Do, however, find a way to incorporate your favorite colours. Accent pillows, posters, bedding, lamps, etc. are all wonderful ways to bring some colour into your room.

3: Don't use your 14 favorite colours though. Pick no more than three. Try to pick ones you've liked for a while, and ones that look good together.

4: The bed is the focal point of the bedroom. Make sure the bedding goes with the rest of the room (As a tip: making the bed makes the rest of the room look neater too).

5: Make a list of your favorite things that you might like posters of. Bands, places, paintings, movie stars, whatever. Now slowly work the list down. You could cover every inch of space with posters, but that would cost a small fortune. Also think about what ones would go well with the rest of your room. If you were to paint your room pink (I know you siad nothing too girly, this is just an example) and then get posters of skeletons... it won't make any sense and will look bad. But don't leave your favorite things out either, try to plan the room to get everything you love in there, without making it a huge collection of mismatched items.

6: If you are planning on moving furniture get a big sheet of paper and a coule regular sheets of paper. Measure your room and make a scale drawing on the big sheet of paper (1 inch for every foot is fine). On the regular sheets make scale drawings of all your furniture and any new furniture you may get. Be sure to use the same scale. Cut the pieces out, and move them around on the room drawing until you find a set up you like. This prevents your having to move everything 400 times until you're happy.

7: If you need more storage and can't build out: Build up! And under, and around! There are all kinds of creative storage sulutions that people over look. Get a big plastic storage container that will fit under your bed and keep your off-season clothes in it. Put sheleves on the walls for those trinkets and books. Put hooks on the back of your door for belts/scarves/bags/hats. If you have a lot of stuff that needs storage and not much room it can seem like a daunting task. But if you just step back, relax, and think about it, you'll get all kinds of ideas!

8: Most of all, have fun.

Good luck! If you have any questions or need some more help, feel free to email me.
