Is it common for art gallery curators to want to see artist home?

Q. Im new to the art gallerie world. Ive created enough pieces so now I'm sending out sample booklets with my work to galleries. Now a curator wants to set up a meeting to see my place. Is this common practice in the art world? im really excited but then again i want to be carefull.

A. Wanting to see your home would be unusual. Wanting to see your studio (where you create the work) is fairly common. It would also depend on the nature of your work (studio visits are less important if you're doing watercolors but very important if you do installation sculptures.)

If you do your work from home, you might want to consider having the curators come over (but only showing them your work areas, not your bedroom) and perhaps having your parents/roommates/friends nearby just to be safe.

What would need to be on a website about New Zealand to make you visit it often?
Q. I live in New Zealand, and plan to make a website about it. It's mostly intended to advertise for my little bed and breakfast business, but I would also like to show picture galleries, and have an online shop on it. Is there anything you would want to see on a website like that? Maybe a clock displaying local time, and stuff like that? What else would be good, and moreover, what would get you hooked on it?

A. We're going on holiday to New Zealand in a couple of weeks and I'm finding some of the websites I look at a bit frustrating for a few reasons, so I've got plenty to say on the matter..........'oh no' I hear you groan!!:

- lack of photos or bad photography. I've never been before and I've heard it's a beautiful country but half the time the campsites or hotels I see don't show the area to its best advantage (a couple of shots of a cramped looking bedroom, no pic of the outside of the site or property, no pics of the local area or they'll show 5 pics and two will be a couple of sheep in a field - I think most of us know what a couple of sheep look like, we want to see photos of the landscape and property LOL ).

- bad websites. I hate sites with music, 'flash' trying to be too trendy, and photos that you can't either do a slideshow of or be able to tab through (or they're too small to be able to see properly). You want info, info, info, photos, maps, weather info, facts for the newbie visitor, perhaps travelling times from the major airport/city, walking distance to the local pub and restaurant and more photos! Some sites have lots of photos but each one opens in a new window and you have to close it before you can click on a new one - I know it sounds trivial but if you're searching through 40+ sites and one isn't easy to navigate then often you'll skip it and move on to the next one.

- regarding info - you say you have a B&B, so I think it's a good idea to state clearly how many people each room will sleep (if it's a family room, does family mean 3, 5 or 9?). A photo or two of the room set up normally and for the maximum amount of people is also useful.

- a clock with local time on as you mentioned is a good idea, I like that. Weather info would be good too if you can do it.

- I mentioned walking distance to the local pub earlier and I think this is quite important. We like to think that people aren't going to drink and drive so if they know that they can stay at your place and be able to walk to a few decent pubs/restaurants, then that's a good thing and can be an attractive prospect for some when booking a place to stay - likewise, if you're in the middle of nowhere then you need to mention that and give driving distances to local amenities.

Phew, I think that's all I can think of for now. Sorry for the essay and for being an internet bore, but over the years I've spent a lot of time on the internet for tourism reasons and there are so many bad websites out there. I do think people are doing themselves a big favour if they have a good site which is easy for a person to use.

What are some fun crafts you can make that can use to decorate your room?
Q. I recently got into making my own furniture and decor for my bedroom lately. I realized it saves a lot of money and its make your room more personal. So I wanted to know if you guys had any cool ideas of some useful things to make that can go in my room???!!!

A. Try a chair covered with a soft, washed denim fabric. Use denim accents in the room, such as trimming a group of red pillows with fat denim cording.

You can even use a denim look to cover the walls. There are paint techniques for chambray and denim-look walls, which will be a perfect accent to a room with a cowboy theme or for a young lady who is crazy about horses.

Denim is a fabric that immediately imparts the feeling of comfort, so it is perfect for bedrooms in particular. Use denim comforters and pillow shams. You can even find chambray sheets and matching curtains.

Try using an old ragged pair of jeans to make valances for the windows, or dress up your curtains with chintz covered cornices.

Keep your walls in the neutral family of colors. Try soft camel beige or a subtle yellow. Pine furniture works well, or you can paint your old wooden furniture in light golden tones.

Furniture that is more casual than formal works better for this particular style. Other teen room decorating ideas to choose from are:

Garden styles. Use floral prints, upholstered furniture, floral area rugs, and balance the look with plain walls, floors, and curtains.

Casual styles. These include rustic themes, sports, nautical, particular hobbies, Americana . . . the possibilities are limitless. For example, a style could be developed around a collection of autographed baseballs, teapots, wooden duck decoys, trophies, art posters, etc.

Decorating with black and white. This style uses black as an anchor to set off a dramatic decorating look.

This teen room decorating idea is for the drama queen or king teenager in your household. Use a black and white floor, crisp white linens and comforters, and upholstered chairs. Set off the black with accents in red or warm gold, but be sure to pick up the black and white theme in lamps, pillows, picture frames, and other elements of the room.

Contemporary styles. These dictate clean lines, sculptural furniture, high ceilings, and geometric artwork.

Make use of brick walls and ceiling pipes. Avoid anything with floral patterns, ruffles, carvings, or traditional details. You are aiming for the look of an art or museum gallery, utilizing a bold, creative, and sculptural style.

Cottage style. This teen room decorating idea works especially well for teenage girls' rooms. Plaid or country-style fabrics work well with white furniture and rustic accent pieces. This style can transform a bedroom into a mini-vacation spot!

European or Parisian style. This is a glamorous style that invokes old world sophistication. It uses furniture and accent pieces from the rococo, baroque, neoclassical to the more modern art deco and cabaret designs.

Your main colors are black, white, and gold, with jewel tones as accents. Choose vintage-style furniture, such as a black or cream painted dresser with gold accents. Fabrics include silks and brocades. For fun, add a few vintage posters of old Parisian nightclubs, French train station signs, and black wrought iron shelves and tables.

The list of possibilities is endless. Find a good time to sit down and go over these teen room decorating ideas, and soon you will find yourself and your teenager working together to reinvent their bedroom.

Any good ideas for a fun and sexy bedroom makeover?
Q. I'm looking for any ideas for a fun yet sexy bedroom makeover. I've seen different red and black sets that looked very tempting, but I want to make sure that I wont dislike this 2 months from now. I am very open to any suggestions weather it is what paint colors to use, maybe a website with good cheaper furniture? Maybe great pictures? Any more ideas would be great! I can't decide! Thanks! =)

A. Paint your walls a gold color and go with a jungle theme.

Get 24"x 36" prints (3) and get the frames from Walmart in black or brown.
Get a faux mink blanket for the bed:

This makes for a very sexy room when you add a couple of tall fake tropical plants in a couple corners!
