What's the big deal if I wash a bedspread that says "dry clean only" in my washing...?

Q. ...machine?
I mean, really, can I really hurt it? How?

A. The problem is that you don't know WHY they declared it "Dry Clean Only."

It's entirely possible that you can wash it safely--OR, that it'll ruin it in one of several possible ways, and chances are you won't know until you try. So... you got to ask yourself...Do you feel lucky? (sorry. Clint Eastwood moment there.)

Some information that would be important for determining how washable this comforter would be include size, fabric content of the shell, filler content (batting or down? Hollo-fil?), place of manufacture, approximate year of manufacture, some information on the weave of the shell, color/pattern, and surface.

Here are some of the reasons it might NOT work well--
Color-fastness. The dyes might not be stable, and could bleed or fade or splotch. This is of greater concern for older hand-made/ethnic fabrics than for most modern machine made and dyed textiles, but it's a possibility. Cold water will minimize problems with this, and adding salt to the water (2 cups or so) can help "set" some dyes. Shrinkage--this is a bigger risk than color-fastness. Most fabrics are mostly shrink resistant in cold water. Construction--the fabrics some comforters are made from are of an unstable enough weave that seams will open or cording pull away from the edge seams if they're put unter the physical stress of laundering. Fill shift--comforters that are meant to go through laundering rather than dry-cleaning have more construction that holds the "fill" in place. If you wash comforters that don't have good hold points for the fill (batting-types as opposed to down), it can shift and wad up and the comforter will not be even and smooth again--you'll have thin and thick patches. Down or feather fills are generally launderable, but there are issues with drying--the down or feathers must be re-fluffed and re-distributed. Air cycle in a big dryer with a clean tennis shoe is the classic method for this, but the down would need to be shaken down in the channels and re-distributed after the tennis show treatment loosens the clumps. Fabric "finish." Washing could remove the comforter's chemical-based finishes--these are added to the fabric to improve wrinkle-resistance and the fabric's body and "hand." (literally how the fabric feels). Sizings (starch is the home-applied version--commercial finishes last longer!) and finishes, when they're washed away, leave a formerly crisp fabric limp, and can trun a smooth-surfaced fabric into a wrinkled mess. Rayons are notorious for turning into masses of wrinkles that--on a garment--you can iron smooth again, but a comforter isn't something you can iron, and i'd bet steaming would give you mised results. Size--home washing machines are much more apt to be able to easily handle a twin-sized comforter than they are a Queen--or especially!--a king or california king size! The comforter would have been declared "Dry Clean Only" simply because it's big and bulky enough that running it through a wash cycle will leave those "too big a load, not enough agitation, not enough rinse cycle" greyish fiber or detergent spots all over it. An industrial washer--the big drum tumbler kind--can help this, and would put less stress on the comforter than an agitator would--but if it's a California king you might have trouble finding one big enough! That's what I'd be looking at.

To make the decision, what it boils down to for me would be--how much did I spend on the comforter, how critical is it to the decor of the bedroom, just how dirty IS it?, how unhappy I'm going to be if it doesn't work, and is there a "dry clean by weight" dry-cleaner in my area.

If you can locate a dry-cleaner who does dry-cleaning on a "per-pound" basis (these cleaners don't press per-pound dry-cleaning orders, and sometimes you can get lots of cleaning done for only a couple of bucks per pound--a good option for doing several heavy or bulky items in prep for off season storage, for example), I'd be thinking about that, before I'd run it through the washing machine.

I need a bedroom makover please help me?
Q. I have a small bedroom...i Want to be able to relax and do my homework in....it needs to be very organzied....and i want a tropical feel

A. A big trick a lot of people over look when re-doing small rooms is the use of mirrors! Now Im NOT saying go and PUt floor to ceiling mirrors in your room, but when your in a small room, simply just adding a mirror to the wall makes the room feeling a lot More open.

So since you have a small room painting the walls a dark color would be a bad idea! Dark colors cause rooms to feel smaller and sometimes cramped! So for your room I would suggest a cream color or an off-white:

http://www.framingsupplies.com/images/Crescent/Misc/WhiteSampler.jpg

Any of those would work! The off white lets the room feel open, and also symbolizes the sand of a tropical Paradise!
If that's too boring and you want to get a little more interesting with the wall color go with a light or pastel blue:

http://www.bubblyfunk.co.uk/images/Cardstock%208x8%20Pastel%20Blue.JPG

This is a fun color, but still keeps the room feeling open!

Now since you want tropical, and you want a place to do your homework, a desk is essential! Having a wicker plain white desk Gives it that clean, organized feel, but still keeps the room fun and tropical:

Also a white wicker bed frame would be ideal to continue the look throughout the room. I don't know what size bed you have. Queen.? Twin? But as long as you understand the white wicker than that's fine:

This is a JcPenny Bed set! Well priced. Its comfortable well made and simple. So as you get older if you don't like tropical anymore you wont have to change your bed set you can just change the theme:

http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=1649c84&DeptID=70750&CatID=77512&SO=0&x5view=1&Ne=4294957900+877+1031+1007+580+8+966+18+904+949+833&pagesize=1&shopperType=G&N=4294940584&Nao=0&PSO=0&CmCatId=70750|77512

I'm not sure weather you are a boy or a girl, but those bed sets have different colors. For the boys I would recommend the blue and brown one. The blue will go well with the wall. For the girls I would choose the yellow, pink, and orange one. IT would be fun and symbolize the sunset.

Since you don't have a lot of room in your room. I suggest adding a lot of wall decoration! One way to get GREAT wall decorations (And have a lot of fun doing it) Is for you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/friends/family to take a ton of pictures! I don't know about you, but I love taking pictures! Or you could get pictures you print off from online that have to do with the beach. Surfboards, sunsets, birds, etc. Then once all of your pictures are printed go and get frames for them! They don't have to be the same frame! Then get spray paint (the same white that is in your room) and spray paint all of the frames! Then put the pictures in the frame and hang them in a similar set up like this: (except with more pictures or course!)

http://www.manobluedesign.com/manoblueblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/picture-1.png

It will look really modern and cool! It also will be a lot of fun taking the pictures AND will add a personal touch to your room! Also when painting your room, have the doors and trim stay white. If you do choose the yellow comforter your walls can be the orange that matches your bed set.

If you want to add more fun stuff to your walls go and buy a stencil. For guys you could get a stencil of a surfboard that matches the color of your bed set! And for girls, you could get the stencil of a tropical flower! Pink maybe that matches yours! Also you said you wanted to feel relaxed. I quick and simple thing that could make your room feel relaxed is adding a simple water feature! :

However, the enemy nation of the god Seiryuu has manipulated Yui into becoming the priestess of Seiryuu. As enemies, the former best friends begin their long struggle to summon their respective gods and obtain their wishes.

Ayashi No Ceres ~ Aya and her twin brother Aki thought they were going to a celebration of their sixteenth birthday at their grandfather's home, but the funeral-like atmosphere tips them off that something's not right. Grandfather Mikage announces that Aki will be heir to the Mikage fortune, and Aya must die! But Aya has allies in the athletic cook and martial artist Yûhi, and the attractive, mysterious Tôya. But can even two handsome and resourceful guys save Aya when it's her own power that's out of control?

Red River ~ A seemingly ordinary modern day teenager, Yuri, is suddenly whisked away to the Hittite empire in ancient Anatolia, where an ambitious queen wants the girl for a blood sacrifice in order to murder all heirs but her son, thus seizing control of the throne. Luckily, the timely intervention of Prince Kail saves Yuri from the queen's grasp. Kail promises to send Yuri back to her home, but the queen's persistent schemes to kill them both, plus their growing feelings for each other, keep those plans delayed.

Kanata Kara ~ On her way home from school one day, Noriko is unexpectedly plunged into a strange and extraordinary fantasy world. Her troubles compound exponentially when she is rescued and befriended by a handsome young man by the name of Izark. He may be brave and courageous, but inside Izark lurks the darkest evil imaginable. And according to an ancient prophecy, Noriko possesses the power to unleash that evil. Now, inexorably bound together, these two unlikely allies must navigate a world both wondrous and hostile.

Heres some you may like:
Itazura Na Kiss ~ Ever since she entered high school, Kotoko Aihara wanted to be in the same class as Naoki Irie. One day, her home gets destroyed and the only place else to go was to Irie's home. Now that she lives close to him, will their relationship be the same, or will it become greater than it is.

Marmalade Boy ~ All Miki Koishikawa wanted was an ordinary family and that's exactly what she had until her parents decided to move in with another couple and turned Miki's world upside down. Now she lives in a house with four parents and her totally cute stepbrother Yuu. It's bad enough being brought into her parents' strange soap opera, but Miki will star in a soap of her own as she deals with friends having affairs, trying to survive in school and ending up torn between her long-time crush, Ginta, and her new stepbrother!

Hana Kimi ~ Japanese-American track-and-field star Mizuki has gotten herself to transfer to a high school in Japan...but not just any school! To be close to her idol, high jumper Izumi Sano, she's going to an all-guys' high school...and disguising herself as a boy! But as fate would have it, they're more than classmates...they're roommates! Now, Mizuki must keep her secret in the classroom, the locker room, and her own bedroom. And her classmates--and the school nurse--must cope with a new transfer student who may make them question their own orientation.

Hana Yori Dango ~ Tsukushi Makino, a working-class girl, attends an elite elevator school called Eitoku Academy, populated by children from rich, high-society families. She is the "weed" of the school surrounded by all the rich kids including the "Flower" Four (F4). The F4 leader and son of the wealthiest, most powerful family in Japan, Tsukasa Domyoji, takes an interest in Tsukushi, because she is the only girl at Eitoku who doesn't fawn over him. However, his hot-headed nature and bullying ways are originally a major turn-off for Tsukushi, who has her sights set on someone else.

Re-decorating Help!!?
Q. So I'm a 16-year-old girl and I'm redoing my room. Furniture and all!

I have a twin size matress and I can't get a new one but other than that, I can get new. I need new furniture, bedding, wall paper/color and anything you can think of!

could you help me think of some ideas? any color themes or styles you like?!

I was looking at this for furniture..http://www.raymourflanigan.com/hadley-4pc-queen-bedroom-set-597047705.aspx
What do you think? what colors go well with it or do you have any other suggestions?

PLEASE help! i have such a childish room and i really want something more sophisticated.
Thanks (:

A. I think sophisticated equals modern. I know of a site that has really stylish, modern furniture for really affordable prices. The quality of their furniture is built to last and modern furniture never goes out of style. So you can keep it for years to come.
