Bedroom Makeover?

Q. I want to make my bedroom into a quiet, calming space, that also feels light and airy; a place that I can go to feel at peace. I was wondering what type of colours you would recommend, and any other decorating tips I can use to achieve this.

A. the best color for creating a feel of airiness and space is a pale soft gray. it should have just a subtle hint of green in it for warmth and earthiness. a color like this, for example: Sherwin Williams "Austere gray".
straight uncluttered lines and an accent on horizontal rather than vertical lines will create a relaxing and meditative aura.
minimize or eliminate frills, ruffles, and primary colors.busy patterns, and heavy ornamentation.
use earthy colors for accent such as, grey, black, rust, ocher, sage, tan, terra cotta, and even turquoise in very small doses. And the warm spice colors, such as cinnamon, paprika, saffron, nutmeg, chili, turmeric. these colors are warming yet tranquil. Avoid sharp contrasts in your color palette, and try to use matte as opposed to gloss sheen
on surfaces. Stay away from pure white, pink, and any neon bright colors.
you can use metallic colors such as copper, bronze, iron, pewter. but avoid gold, brass, and chrome, stainless steel, and glass.
Incorporate some natural texture into the space as well as color. think about using bamboo, rattan, leather, slate, burlap. and use some natural dried plant and flower for decor, cat tails look wonderful in this kind of setting, as do dried grasses, willow branches, pine cones, dried seed pods, pussy willows, reeds.

I need a bedroom makover please help me?
Q. I have a small bedroom...i Want to be able to relax and do my homework in....it needs to be very organzied....and i want a tropical feel

A. A big trick a lot of people over look when re-doing small rooms is the use of mirrors! Now Im NOT saying go and PUt floor to ceiling mirrors in your room, but when your in a small room, simply just adding a mirror to the wall makes the room feeling a lot More open.

So since you have a small room painting the walls a dark color would be a bad idea! Dark colors cause rooms to feel smaller and sometimes cramped! So for your room I would suggest a cream color or an off-white:

Any of those would work! The off white lets the room feel open, and also symbolizes the sand of a tropical Paradise!
If that's too boring and you want to get a little more interesting with the wall color go with a light or pastel blue:

This is a fun color, but still keeps the room feeling open!

Now since you want tropical, and you want a place to do your homework, a desk is essential! Having a wicker plain white desk Gives it that clean, organized feel, but still keeps the room fun and tropical:

Also a white wicker bed frame would be ideal to continue the look throughout the room. I don't know what size bed you have. Queen.? Twin? But as long as you understand the white wicker than that's fine:

This is a JcPenny Bed set! Well priced. Its comfortable well made and simple. So as you get older if you don't like tropical anymore you wont have to change your bed set you can just change the theme:

I'm not sure weather you are a boy or a girl, but those bed sets have different colors. For the boys I would recommend the blue and brown one. The blue will go well with the wall. For the girls I would choose the yellow, pink, and orange one. IT would be fun and symbolize the sunset.

Since you don't have a lot of room in your room. I suggest adding a lot of wall decoration! One way to get GREAT wall decorations (And have a lot of fun doing it) Is for you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/friends/family to take a ton of pictures! I don't know about you, but I love taking pictures! Or you could get pictures you print off from online that have to do with the beach. Surfboards, sunsets, birds, etc. Then once all of your pictures are printed go and get frames for them! They don't have to be the same frame! Then get spray paint (the same white that is in your room) and spray paint all of the frames! Then put the pictures in the frame and hang them in a similar set up like this: (except with more pictures or course!)

It will look really modern and cool! It also will be a lot of fun taking the pictures AND will add a personal touch to your room! Also when painting your room, have the doors and trim stay white. If you do choose the yellow comforter your walls can be the orange that matches your bed set.

If you want to add more fun stuff to your walls go and buy a stencil. For guys you could get a stencil of a surfboard that matches the color of your bed set! And for girls, you could get the stencil of a tropical flower! Pink maybe that matches yours! Also you said you wanted to feel relaxed. I quick and simple thing that could make your room feel relaxed is adding a simple water feature! :

where you use rattan furniture?
Q. i was wondering do people usally put rattan furnitures in the living room as decorations??? Or do you put them somewhere else in the house than the living room?

A. Rattan or wicker furniture can be used in any and every room of your home. Many people like to use them as an accent piece, a chair or a table mixed with other furniture. Another way they may be used is in a sun room, or Florida room. Upscale Rattan or wicker sets are beautiful in the dining or kitchen area. They are now making outside wicker for open decks and patios. A rattan or wicker chair and table look great in a bedroom. A rattan or wicker chest can go anywhere from the living room, dining room, kitchen or the bath room. There really is no limit to where you may use them or for what purpose. Hope this helps.

I would love to have a tropical themed bedroom someday?
Q. Currently, my fiance' and I live in an apartment, so we are limited on decorating (not allowed to paint walls or created any major holes in the walls, etc). But I would still love to have some ideas for having a tropical themed bedroom for when we get a house in the future. I don't want to have flowers and palm trees painted on the walls, but I would like it to have a tropical feel. Maybe having the room look like the inside of a little tropical get-a-way cabin. I remember seeing some home-design show (I think it was While You Were Out) where they did a tropical themed bedroom by making the windows shuttered, wood floors, light colored walls, etc.

Anyone have any ideas? Or if you were able to find the link to that particular show, I will give you best answer.

A. Keep it simple, think Ernest Hemingway or island cabana look. Crisp white linens, gauzy white drapes or bamboo shades. Don't get cheesy with palm print bedspread or wall paper. Wicker or rattan pieces can help create that look too.

Of course its up to you, but I'm all about regional design, like my Friend's mom has a really overly done tropical look bedroom and she lives in suburban Minnesota. I'm sure you don't see a lot of North Woods rec rooms with loons and moose in south Florida?

You can get the beachy-island look without looking like the set of the Golden Girls
