Q. I have to get a fire inspection done on my house (in houston) and before I pay to get it done I want to make sure I've pretty much got everything in place and up to standards. Do you know where I would be able to get like a checklist for everything I'd need in the house or needed done to my house?

If the house is more than one story is a working smoke detector installed at the top of the stairs
Does each sleeping room and living area have at least one of the following secondary means of escape other than the �front� or �back� door of the home?
A) A door, stairway, passage or hall providing unobstructed travel leading directly to the outside of the dwelling; or
B) An outside window with a minimum opening of not less than 5.7 sq. ft. in area, minimum of 20 inches wide, and at least 24 inches high, and no higher than 44 inches above the floor, located within 20 ft. of grade accessible to fire department apparatus; or
C) A non-locking door into an adjoining room that has a means of escape described in A or B above.
Can a person travel from any room of the house to an exit that leads directly outside without having to pass through an interior door than can be locked
Can all primary exterior exit doors, windows used as a secondary means of escape, and any security bars incorporated with these primary and secondary means of escape, be opened from the inside without the use of a key, tool or special knowledge (security code, combination)?
8.Are the closet doors equipped so that a child can open the door from the inside?
If the bathroom door is equipped with a lock, can the door be unlocked from the outside during an emergency?
Can all bedrooms and/or living areas above the first floor be accessed by a standard set of stairs?
Are all gas, wood, or fuel-fired heaters used in the home vented to the outside?
Are heaters, including wood burning or gas log fireplaces, equipped with immovable screens or barriers to prevent contact with open flames or hot surfaces?
Are gas appliances (heaters, water heaters, stoves) equipped with metal tubing and metal connectors?
Are all gas-fired heaters inspected annually by a qualified technician?
Are combustible items (things that burn) stored away from any stove, heater, or fireplace in the Foster Home?
Are all lighters and matches kept out of the reach of children?
Are flammable liquids stored in safety cans and kept away from heat and children?
******Is there an operable five-pound dry chemical fire extinguisher available for use in the kitchen?
Has a Home Fire Escape Plan been written, practiced, and documented?
Does the electrical system appear to be in good condition?

Q. This family lives next door to me and they are wonderful caring people. Anytime someone else is in need they are the first ones to help. Yesterday all of the bedrooms in their house were destroyed by fire, water and smoke damage. They have called the Red Cross but there is only so much that they can do. The family has two small children and they are in need of clothing and the family really needs some help getting the house fixed. We live in Houston Texas...If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks
A. Try to raise awareness in the community. It sounds like these are great people so it shouldnt take much to get some people to contribute a little here and there. You would be surprised how generous people can be. Just start calling around or try to set up a fundraiser so the family can have some of the basics they need right now. I take my hat off to you for trying to do something, hopefully others will follow. Good luck.

Hopefully your room mate earns a nice paycheck and you come from a rich family, if you want an inner loop place that doesn't have dirt floors and junkies at your door for less than $1500 per month for a one bedroom, because location is everything.

dehumidifiers in homes. Do they work?
Q. I live in Houston and was debating on getting a dehumidifier for our bedroom. Even though the ac is set low its still humid in the house and feels yucky. Think our insulation sucks. Just wondering if the dehumidifier would help make it feel more comfortable
A. Dehumidifiers definitely remove the moisture from rooms. We have one going all summer long in our downstairs to remove the moisture. They do collect water, so need to be dumped when full. This may be everyday depending on how humid your room is. I water the plants with the water my dehumidifier collects. You could certainly try it. If you feel sticky, you will probably be amazed how much water this removes from your room.
