Does anyone know a furniture store that sells nice furniture at an affordable price in Southern California?

Q. Thanks.

A. Solid Traditional Contemporary and Mission Style furniture
Authentic Mission style furniture also known as Arts and Crafts furniture is a timeless choice. When it is made using the traditional methods that make it truly authentic it is a bullet proof choice. You will have something that will last and last. Most stores sell furniture that is not made in the traditional way using solid lumber and Mortis and Tennon joints and Classic Dovetails. Instead, they use what they call solid wood. That is code for particleboard. Remember, Baloney is meat. The Barn Furniture sells Mission, Traditional, and Contemporary furniture built with the traditional methods in a multitude of price ranges
With the advent of disposable furniture from famous brands like Ikea and the like, poor quality seems to be accepted as normal. It is not normal, necessary, or environmentally responsible. A properly made bedroom set should last a lifetime. Go to any antique exhibition and you will see sets that are hundreds of years old. Mission furniture, which originated in Great Britain, is still made to last a lifetime. There is wide verity to choose from at www.barnfurnituremart.com

You may ask What is the Best wood for furniture making? Most any wood can make good quality furniture; however, you need to follow proper procedures to insure stable quality. It must be properly dried for the species. Factories in Mexico are notorious for using improperly dried and seasoned lumber. If you see a line with problems like warped panels, small holes from bugs, poorly sliding drawers, especially from Mexico, you are looking for trouble.
MDF stands for medium density fiberboard. This product is particleboard with smaller particles more glue and squeezed more for more density. By definition, it is wood. However, baloney by definition is meat.
Rubber wood is a wonderful wood. Its history and properties is a study of profit opportunity and renewal. Originally, found in Brazil by the early explorers in the early 1600s. The indigenous tribes used the sap from these trees to make sport balls. Intrigued with its properties, the explorers brought the seeds back with them to Europe. Eventually, rubber trees were found to grow well in the European colonies in Asia. French Indo China, (Viet Nam), Thailand and Hynan Island off the China coast is where it grows best. It was exclusively farmed for the rubber content and after 20 to 30 years the tree would die. The dead trees would then be burned to provide renewal to the land. Once Vulcanization was perfected, which prevented the rubber from rotting, production was increased for the production of Bicycle tires. Later car production required massive increases again in production. WWII required so many tires America needed to replace rubber for tires with synthetic materials. Production kept falling until about 1960 when it was discovered what a hidden resource rubber wood was. As a furniture wood, it is almost as hard as oak at a fraction of the cost. Very nice grain patterns abound. Its only downside is it isnt available in large pieces, therefore it usually made into butcher-block glue ups. Remember, if it is sliced into veneer all bets are off. It is now baloney with Rubber wood on top. Now, the "Rubber from the trees in now mostly used for Rubber erasers for which the name comes from and making condoms. Oak is one of the strongest and most versatile of woods. The main types of Oak are White Oak, Red Oak, and Black Oak. Each has its own unique characteristics. It can be cut three different ways to achieve a different grain patterns. First, plain cut which will give you the classic cathedral patter. Next, rift cut which will give you a very strait grain pattern; Third, Quarter Sawn cut which gives you Ray Fleck pattern classic in late 19th century early 20th century oak. Check out the link below for further explanation of Quarter Sawn. Remember, if it is sliced into veneer all bets are off. It is now baloney with Oak on top.

Assemble yourself
There are lots of websites with lots of product. The problem is the price doesn't always match the quality. If you plan on only keeping your furniture for 1 to 5 years and treat your furniture with kid gloves Ikea may be a good choice, however, ask anyone that has had Ikea furniture for a while or attempted to move it. It tends to auto destruct upon moving. Those cam lock type assembly hardware just don't like to be moved. What makes it fairly inexpensive is what makes it poor quality. The whole thing is about freight and warehouse space. This should NOT YOUR PROBLEM. In my humble opinion, virtually all assemble yourself furniture is inferior quality mostly made of particleboard filled with formaldehyde. My family and I have been in the furniture business both manufacturing and retailing for over 60 years. Our retail store went on line almost 20 years ago. I understand both manufacturing and retailing. I sell what I make every day of the week in my store. Consider checking out a local store with less than 5 to 10 stores. In my experience the larger the chain, the poorer the quality and service. In addition, in this difficult housing market, many both large and small stores are struggling and over 20,000 retail furniture stores both large and small have gone out of in business in the last 18 months. PAY BY CREDIT CARD for a little protection. I have noticed fairly good quality furniture in Costco. In the STORE not on line. It is very seasonal for them and the selection is very limited but well priced and good quality.

Ikea Mattress VS Standard Mattress?
Q. If I ordered a bedroom set from ikea, does most of there bed frames work with a standard box-spring and mattress or does itt have to be from ikea too
?

A. It depends, Check the dimensions for the model that you bought (it should be on their website.) Some are made for the European market so they need to have the IKEA mattresses but others are made to US standard sizes and fit them fine. IKEA sells both Euro and US size mattresses nowadays. I have owned several IKEA bed frames in queen size. Two of them fit the Euro sized bedding and 3 of them fit standard US bedding. The bed I use now is an IKEA queen wooden canopy bed and fits a standard Beautyrest queen perfectly. The differences are only a few inches. If the bed is more a platform style with no footboard you can usually use either size. But if it has to fit down into the frame you may have problems using the US sizes.

Also, independent local mattress companies in most cities make there own mattresses. It is usually not all that much more money to have them custom make the size you need. I have done that to get mattresses to fit 100 year old family antique beds (which are smaller than modern beds).

I would like a European themed bedroom?
Q. I have no idea where to begin. I'm 13 and I love love love Europe. I have white furniture, I can't paint my walls since I live in military housing, and I don't know how to go about changing my decorations. Here's a picture of a bedroom set I absolutely love, but I cannot create the same effect because the mural costs about two hundred dollars, and it doesn't seem French without the mural.

The picture is the black and white vertically striped bedding with a red stiletto pillow and a mural of the Eiffel Tower. Here's a pic of the bedding without the stiletto pillow or the mural, and it doesn't look French at all.

I love Germany too!

In fact I'd like a room where there's kind of a bit of everything in it, but still looks put together, and matching. Maybe a huge map of Europe and some flags or something I don't know. But I'd also like it to look okay with my Tokio Hotel (German band) posters.
