moving around furniture for a new look, need help?

Alicia Caf

want a new look in my bedroom by just moving furniture, any ideas?

Answer
Hi Alicia,
Before you start moving the furniture in your room you might consider making a list of the necessary furniture in the room. On a separate piece of paper sketch out a diagram of potential ideas for placement. You can always angle furniture, group items, and look around for items of furniture from other rooms. Careful where you place your tv as it seems the windows can always be highly reflective during natural daylight hours obscuring the view of the tv. Keep heights of lamps/lighting in mind. 2 table Lamps and a floor lamp is a good thing! Think 'task areas'. If you have a media center in one area, desk for work in a separate area, your bed should be on a wall that is able to accommodate a night stand with lamp. Get rid of anything that is not functional and this will clean up your area visually. If you need additional space consider storage containers for under the bed.
Again spare your self some sore muscles and sketch on paper first to see if this is the way that you may want to consider arranging your furniture :o) Happy decorating!

How to arrange furniture in a long bedroom?

California

I'm trying to create my dream bedroom, which would have a beach/tropical theme. I have painted the walls a sandy brown color, and have the perfect comforter. What I'm stuck on now is how to arrange my furniture. My room is fairly big, but very long so it makes it hard to arrange furniture. My room is about 19 feet long and 9 feet wide. I have a bed, a corner desk (that I use as a vanity) a nightstand, a bookshelf, a dresser, and I'm going to add a small little love seat and a small tv. How could I arrange this so it flows and feels very elegant? Also, any other suggestions on how to add to the tropical theme? Thanks!
By the way, if it helps, I have my door at the very end of the long wall, and two windows on the opposite wall.
If possible, I would like to create a space for the love seat and TV for a little TV-viewing area. (:

Hi Blondie
Great space and you are actually right on track with your thinking. What you are needing to do is to create within the same room two task areas. One for sleeping and as you said one for viewing. Visualize the room in thirds, two thirds of the area is where you are sleeping and dressing make up etc. The remaining area is the viewing area.
Bedroom area: Bed, Dresser, Vanity
Viewing reading area: Love seat, BookCase, Tv with Stand or small Media center.

Furniture Placement: Place the bed closets to the door. Place bed against a long wall foot area facing into room. Picture a rectangular shape the bed is midway with foot board facing into room not facing the door. Side bed table with Lighting. Dresser should be on a smaller wall. Vanity to the available corner wall.

Tropical Theme-Ideas: www.houzz.com great website tons of additional ideas!

Viewing Area be certain to place the couch facing your bed. This creates a feeling of warmth and welcome. As if to visually say come in and sit down. The placement here is important for the visual impact of your room. Thisis key to making both the spaces work together. You will also need additional lighting in this area.

Colors: Wall color choice is awesome :o) good job. Now time to add a light turquoise blue, some elements of green ( think Palm Trees ) and other greenery at the beach. Add some off white as well. Toss Pillows, Art Work, Natural rattan Baskets and you are adding to the overall look and theme of the room.

Hope this helps and happy decorating! www.houzz.com
