How much money do I need to furnish a new apartment?

Q. It's a one bedroom. I have a TV, pots n pans, kitchen table, and living room table & end tables.

I'll have to buy almost EVERYthing else. I can buy stuff like Value City or Ashley furniture. How much will it cost for a bed set, sheets, couch, lamps, towels, trash cans, etc....

How about hook up fees for phones and gas, etc?

A. I don't know where you live, but you should try to get as much as you can at garage sales or second hand shops. This would include dishes, glasses, silverware, ect.

For the things you don't want to get used try ikea. They have everything you could possibly need to furnish an apartment, and the bonus is that they are reasonably priced and their stuff is cute! Also go to Walmart, Target and Kmart for things like bedding, towels, and accessories.

www.ikea.com

mattress/boxspring--$200-1000 depending on your preference. If you want to save money, buy just the mattress and buy a platform bed because you don't need a boxspring.

platform bed or frame--$50-150

Bathroom accessories (towels, washcloths, shower curtain ect) $50-$75

Couch and chair--$400+

lamps (2)--$50

bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows ect)--$100

All the extra things you will need to set up your kitchen with like a microwave, toaster, dish towels ect will run you about $150

A phone will cost about $35 for hookup and gas and electric usually make you pay one months utilities in advance so I would guess about $150 total. A lot of people aren't getting home phones anymore, but instead just using their cell phones. This would save you a monthly bill of at least $35 (and that is if you don't use long distance!)

All of this information could be more expensive depending on what part of the country you live in. Like I said before, get as much as you can at garage sales or second hand shops like a microwave, and even a bed frame if you can find one. I don't know when you are moving but start looking early. Also, ask relatives if they have any old items you can have/borrow because they might be willing to give up an old couch they have in their basement and you can get a slip cover for it which will save you hundreds of dollars.
