What are some cheap ways of going Shabby Chic in a small, two-bedroom townhouse? Everything seems expensive!?

Q.

A. The least expensive way is garage sales and thrift stores. You can find some great buys there for furniture and accessories. Remember, furniture can always be painted, repaired, hence the shabby part of shabby chic.

Lots of fabrics go with the look as well, quilts, chintzes, floral prints. I look for linen hand towels , they make great pillows, placemats and napkins. I also hung/draped an old tablecloth over old glass doorknobs as a valance in my bedroom. You can also find things like this on eBay. Just be patient, keep an open mind and you will amazed what you will come up with.

I also shop the outdoor furniture section for my house. The end tables in my living room are black rattan, I have a white wicker bench in my bedroom and a friend of mine even has an outdoor set in her dining room! It was much cheaper than the "furniture" section.

Be creative, let your imagniation run wild!

I also shop Terrys Village for inexpensive accessories

I'm redecorating my room, and i need some creative ideas?
Q. any ideas on how to decorate my room in a "tropical" theme?

A. When thinking of tropical colors luscious and relaxing colors come to mind. I am always drawn to the blues and greens of the sea surrounding islands or the shores of exotic destinations. But colors of tropical blossoms or the lush green of foliage can also be used to create the look. Palm tree, beach or nautical prints could be incorporated but I recommend keeping these obvious elements to a minimum and using furniture, fabric, textures and accessories that are instead simply suggestive of the theme will keep the room from looking cliche. you could put some in glass bowls or jars, place the on a shelves or tabletops or hot glue some to the frame of a mirror.Coral prints or embroidered pillows also add to the tropical feeling and give a nice shot of color. For the furnishings use native dark wood pieces, beach house white or light wood, painted pieces, wicker or a mixture of different styles and materials.A large plant, especially palm trees, can fit in and accessories in bamboo, wicker and rattan add to the scheme quite naturally. For the walls I suggest either a sandy beige or a blue green You might even consider a very soft, warm pink. A grass cloth might be used for the walls if you are going for a more sophisticated look. Swirls, stripes and sponge painting on your seaside walls may add a nice feel. Keep window treatments light and airy. Simple tab top curtains that can blow in the breeze make the perfect beach them window treatment. Light colored furniture can also add a pleasing look to your beach setting. White wicker is the most commonly used bedroom furniture when you want a beach feel.

Bedroom Makeover?
Q. I want to make my bedroom into a quiet, calming space, that also feels light and airy; a place that I can go to feel at peace. I was wondering what type of colours you would recommend, and any other decorating tips I can use to achieve this.

A. the best color for creating a feel of airiness and space is a pale soft gray. it should have just a subtle hint of green in it for warmth and earthiness. a color like this, for example: Sherwin Williams "Austere gray".
straight uncluttered lines and an accent on horizontal rather than vertical lines will create a relaxing and meditative aura.
minimize or eliminate frills, ruffles, and primary colors.busy patterns, and heavy ornamentation.
use earthy colors for accent such as, grey, black, rust, ocher, sage, tan, terra cotta, and even turquoise in very small doses. And the warm spice colors, such as cinnamon, paprika, saffron, nutmeg, chili, turmeric. these colors are warming yet tranquil. Avoid sharp contrasts in your color palette, and try to use matte as opposed to gloss sheen
on surfaces. Stay away from pure white, pink, and any neon bright colors.
you can use metallic colors such as copper, bronze, iron, pewter. but avoid gold, brass, and chrome, stainless steel, and glass.
Incorporate some natural texture into the space as well as color. think about using bamboo, rattan, leather, slate, burlap. and use some natural dried plant and flower for decor, cat tails look wonderful in this kind of setting, as do dried grasses, willow branches, pine cones, dried seed pods, pussy willows, reeds.

I need a bedroom makover please help me?
Q. I have a small bedroom...i Want to be able to relax and do my homework in....it needs to be very organzied....and i want a tropical feel

A. A big trick a lot of people over look when re-doing small rooms is the use of mirrors! Now Im NOT saying go and PUt floor to ceiling mirrors in your room, but when your in a small room, simply just adding a mirror to the wall makes the room feeling a lot More open.

So since you have a small room painting the walls a dark color would be a bad idea! Dark colors cause rooms to feel smaller and sometimes cramped! So for your room I would suggest a cream color or an off-white:

Any of those would work! The off white lets the room feel open, and also symbolizes the sand of a tropical Paradise!
If that's too boring and you want to get a little more interesting with the wall color go with a light or pastel blue:

This is a fun color, but still keeps the room feeling open!

Now since you want tropical, and you want a place to do your homework, a desk is essential! Having a wicker plain white desk Gives it that clean, organized feel, but still keeps the room fun and tropical:

Also a white wicker bed frame would be ideal to continue the look throughout the room. I don't know what size bed you have. Queen.? Twin? But as long as you understand the white wicker than that's fine:

This is a JcPenny Bed set! Well priced. Its comfortable well made and simple. So as you get older if you don't like tropical anymore you wont have to change your bed set you can just change the theme:

I'm not sure weather you are a boy or a girl, but those bed sets have different colors. For the boys I would recommend the blue and brown one. The blue will go well with the wall. For the girls I would choose the yellow, pink, and orange one. IT would be fun and symbolize the sunset.

Since you don't have a lot of room in your room. I suggest adding a lot of wall decoration! One way to get GREAT wall decorations (And have a lot of fun doing it) Is for you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/friends/family to take a ton of pictures! I don't know about you, but I love taking pictures! Or you could get pictures you print off from online that have to do with the beach. Surfboards, sunsets, birds, etc. Then once all of your pictures are printed go and get frames for them! They don't have to be the same frame! Then get spray paint (the same white that is in your room) and spray paint all of the frames! Then put the pictures in the frame and hang them in a similar set up like this: (except with more pictures or course!)

It will look really modern and cool! It also will be a lot of fun taking the pictures AND will add a personal touch to your room! Also when painting your room, have the doors and trim stay white. If you do choose the yellow comforter your walls can be the orange that matches your bed set.

If you want to add more fun stuff to your walls go and buy a stencil. For guys you could get a stencil of a surfboard that matches the color of your bed set! And for girls, you could get the stencil of a tropical flower! Pink maybe that matches yours! Also you said you wanted to feel relaxed. I quick and simple thing that could make your room feel relaxed is adding a simple water feature! :
