Need some easy decorating ideas for a Master Bedroom?

Q. We have an older four poster oak bedroom set-its sturdy and well made and I just cant bring myself to get rid of it. I would really love to spice up my bedroom decor but cant figure out what would go well with the brown oak "country style" bedroom set. Im more into a contemporary or eclectic look now and I need help with some options...thanks.

A. I had a Lane bedroom set. It was solid oak and gorgeous. It had a canopy bed, triple dresser, armoire and two nightstands. I had that set for at least 30 years and it looked like new.

But times and tastes change and I wanted something more modern or at least "different".

Trust me, nothing you do to that "country style" set is going to satisfy you if your taste has changed. Bite the bullet and let it go. I sold my old set reasonably to someone that loved it as much as I did when it was new so I knew it went to a good home.

I then bought a new set that is just what I wanted at this point in my life. I don't go for the "sturdy, well made" (translated "really expensive") stuff anymore (I'm not talking about buying junk either, I got my new set at Ashley) because then you have it forever and get tired of it. If you take good care of whatever you buy it will last you for as long as you love it. Then, when you don't "love it" anymore you won't feel so bad to let it go.

Life is short, you deserve to have what makes you happy today!!

Edited: I work for a store that sells furniture wholesale and I update their catalogs. Believe me when I tell you that if you paint the "country" furniture black, it's going to look like black "country" furniture (I see hundreds of sets of black "country" furniture). Country is country is country. If you try to put modern stuff in, on and around your "country" stuff, it's going to scream "she's trying not to look country, but it's country with modern stuff". It won't go. I had country decorating in my home. My husband bought me a baby grand piano. When they bought it in and set it down amidst my "country" stuff, you could almost hear the piano saying "What's all this stuff?" I had to change my decor to go with the piano (much more sophistocated victorian). Modern stuff has clean lines and there is no way to make country stuff look modern.

I'll say it again, life is short, get what you really want and enjoy it.

What would you choose Black, or a Dark Cherry Bedroom Set and Why?
Q. For decoration purposes, and whats hot right now would you say. Black to me seems modern and I like that.

I just got my bedroom set delivered today, and they brought dark cherry instead of black, screwing up the order, sigh.

Trying to decide if its worth it to go through the effort to get the Black, which I wanted first.

A. Obviously, it's up to you, but how much do you like the cherry? How long do you have to decide? If they give you some time, l'd live with it a while to see if it grew on me.
Something to consider: the durability and the sheen of the finish. Glossy finishes show flaws more than satin or matte, but as a rule, the darker it is, the easier it is to correct or hide them and your choices are both good in that regard. Black will always be fashionable, but are you planning to move with this stuff? The next room may be too dark for all that black, but the cherry might not be much better. I think the colors and finishes are less a concern than the style and details as far as modernity are concerned and in your case because they are both timeless.
Again, it's your choice, you paid for black and you shouldn't have to settle for something else. But now that you have the cherry in the room (if it is), imagine what it would look like black and if that's what you want, make the switch.

Websites for bedroom furniture?
Q. I want new bedroom furniture. I like dark colors, modern, simple, teenager style, and comfortable. Do you know any websites where they might sell furniture like this. It doesn't have to be everything I listed, but pretty close. I'd also like it if the website had a desk that matches the bedroom set. Nothing too pricey (under $2,500) and pretty good quality. Thank You!

Also, if you know a website where I can find accessories (lamps, sheets, ect.), then pleas list! Thanks again.

A. There are lots of websites with lots of product. The problem is the price doesn't always match the quality. If you plan on only keeping your furniture for 1 to 5 years and treat your furniture with kid gloves Ikea may be a good choice, however, ask anyone that has had Ikea furniture for a while or attempted to move it. It tends to auto destruct upon moving. Those cam lock type assembly hardware just don't like to be moved. What makes it fairly inexpensive is what makes it poor quality. The whole thing is about freight and warehouse space. This should NOT YOUR PROBLEM. In my humble opinion, virtually all assemble yourself furniture is inferior quality mostly made of particleboard filled with formaldehyde. My family and I have been in the furniture business both manufacturing and retailing for over 60 years. Our retail store went on line almost 20 years ago. I understand both manufacturing and retailing. I sell what I make every day of the week in my store. Consider checking out a local store with less than 5 to 10 stores. in my experience the larger the chain, the poorer the quality and service. Also, in this difficult housing market, many both large and small stores are struggling and over 20,000 retail furniture stores both large and small have gone out of in business in the last 18 months. PAY BY CREDIT CARD for a little protection. I have noticed fairly good quality furniture in Costco. In the STORE not on line. It is very seasonal for them and the selection is very limited but well priced and good quality. Also please check out our website and blog @ www.barnfurniture.com

Where can a find a good quality, chocolate brown bedroom set with a modern feel to it?
Q. I am looking for something chocolate brown with a modern feel to it for a king size bed. I've found some nice sets but all were really poorly built. I am looking for something made out of real wood with corner block reinforcements in the drawers and screws, not just staples and glue. Am I being too picky? Do they just not make good quality furniture anymore? Please help.

A. If you're open to shopping online, check out http://www.homelement.com/products/Bedroom-Furniture/Contemporary-Bedroom/Contemporary-Bedroom_1.html

Good luck!
