Will a white headboard match a room with mismatched wood dressers?

Q. We are in the final stages of redoing our bedroom. We painted the room a light/medium blue, and the ceiling, trim, and doors white. We have butterscotch hardwood floors and white faux wood blinds. The only problem is that we couldn't afford new dressers and they do not match. They are both wood, but they are two different stains and types of wood. I was thinking of getting a white, metal, floral type headboard. Do you think that will match? What would you get?
I would paint or stain my husband's dresser because someone gave it to him and it is ugly, but mine is an heirloom that is beautiful the way it is and I would never touch it.

Answer
We have mismatched nightstands in our room.

I totally love mismatched furniture.
There are easy ways to make two mismatched pieces look harmonious.

1) Unify with hardware. Find hardware for your husband's dresser that is not an exact match to yours, but has similar tones. look up vandyke's hardware on the internet. or if yours are easy to remove, you can carefully save the hardware from yours and buy similar hardware for both dressers.

If you can, you can also refinish your husband's dresser. the color will never be the same being different woods, but you can refinish it to a color that would be a warm tone, a cool tone, etc that would compliment the other a little without matching.

2) Unify with symmetry. You can skip the hardware idea or go for it - but If something is done to one, do to the other - if one has a print hanging above it - do the same with the other. If one has a few books on top, do it with the other. You get the idea. Or buy a set of matching lamps. The items do not have to be identical on the other dresser, just harmonious. But do pick the same color dresser scarf or something.

3) With your headboard - if they are both medium to dark woods, the white would look like a third thing in the room that doesn't match. If they are darker woods i would go wrought iron or better yet, i would buy an inexpensive headboard or piece of wood and cover it with fabric. If you pick a geometric, i would buy fabric from one of the secondary colors in it and make dresser scarfs. If you pick a solid, find a subtle print for the dressers people will notice it versus dressers that don't match.

what i mean by dresser scarf is not necessarily anything drapey. it could just be like a placemat, just cut to more of the shape of the dresser top to protect it and add color.

Also, another point to note - make sure the dressers are clean.

And one more thing - you can always check estate sales and yard sales and second hand shops - you may find a dresser that works better with yours for cheap money as well.

what are good ways to "dress up" original hardware on furniture projects?

I have an entire french provencial bedroom set I'm refinishing and I want to use the original hardware but am looking for creative ways to make it more appealing. Any ideas or suggestions?

Answer
Polish up all the exposed metal hardware and make it shine like new. You want to keep it original but look like new that is the way to go.
