the easiest way to refurnish hard wood floors?

Q. how to bring back some shine or finish

A. The first person to answer your question is 100% right. There is NO easy way to refinish hard wood floors. If the floors have retained the stain well and there are no black spots or blemishes, then there is a product that applies a coat of polish to all finished hardwood floors. (Home depot or Lowes carries it in their flooring department) I have tried that along with a floor stripping product on our parquet flooring and in the end, parts of the floor were somewhat shinny, while in other areas the floor looked dry and dull. The stripping product acted more like a paint stripper for scuff marks and caked on stuff. It really all depends on how old your floor is and if it is a heavy traffic area. You'll spend about $20 for the stripping product and polish product.

If you try that and you still do not get the look you are desiring, stripping the floors and starting from scratch is your best, if only, option. It takes a lot of elbow grease, patience and time to refinish hard wood floors the right way with the BEST results. I know first hand. I also have hardwood floors (separate from our parquet flooring). My husband and I first attempted this project the very cheap way. We had a palm sander and sanded one bedroom (10 x 14). The floors had the original stain (we had previously pulled up the carpet, which we found a penny that said 1982. The house was built in 1971.) Anyway, then we went ahead and stained it with one of those polyshades. It looked decent if you didn't get down on the floor. Within 2 weeks, the polyshade stain started to chip up really bad. It was very depressing to say the least, because even going the cheap way out, we spent an entire weekend working on. We have since learned our lesson and have some very valuable experience and knowledge to refinishing floors. We rented a drum sander (only to be used on hardwood floors going one direction, not for parquet flooring). If you check around and get prices, you can possibly get a rental company to match another company's price. Be forewarned...they are not cheap to rent. Anywhere between $60-$80 for one day. However, if you pick it up on Saturday, they will let you keep it all weekend for the price of one day. Typically they are closed on Sundays, so then it is due on Monday morning, if possible. The sand paper is about $5.00 a sheet, but we had 400 sq. feet and only went thru 1 piece of 36 grit, 1 piece of 60 grit and 1 piece of 100 grit. They also can rent an edger for what the drum sander will not reach to. A trick, if you can handle all the vibration, is to use a palm sander if accessible. It takes elbow grease, but again it can save you anywhere between $25-$50 a day. It seems to take much more elbow grease on original stained floors since they have had more time to set in and absorb in the wood. You will have to strip the floors completely down to bare wood. Any wood not stripped will not take to the stain and WILL chip up! believe you me! After all sanding has been done, a good clean-up is essential, including any exposed decorations on wall and all walls and baseboards. My suggestions on the stain is to NOT buy the polyshades. Those, in my experience, do not work as well on flooring and WILL require lightly sanding in between coats. However, Olympic or some other brand other than mini-wax works really well. A stain separate from the polyurithene will only require 1 coat of stain (maybe 2 coats if you choose a darker stain). Once that has set at least 24 hours (my suggestion), then the polyurithene can be applied. Depending on how shinny you want your floors, you can buy semi-gloss or gloss. Typically you would want to apply 2 coats of that. The poly won't take very long to dry because most are now "fast-drying". Light wear can be used within 4-6 hours, but heavy wear, such as moving furniture back into the room, will require a 24 hour drying time.

Like I said, there's no easy way about it. My husband and I had 400 sq. feet to sand and stain, and it took us 2 days just to sand down the floors. I would definitely give yourself plenty of time to redo your floors if you choose to. Good luck!

Few important questions about Canada, Vancouver?
Q. I'm planning to go to live there :) They are rating this city one of the best to live in the World :)
what are people in Vancouver:)? is there lots of unemployment?
How is LIFE in VANCOUVER? Do you like it?
Would 3000 USD per month be enough for to live good there?
What's the average salary by the way ? :) And if I find a work to say in call center, would that be enough for a normal life there + apartment rent ...

A. Vancouver so far has escaped the worst of the economic meltdown. The construction involved in prepping for the 2010 olympics has infused money in and government has several big infrastructure programs on the way so hopefully unemployment will stay where it is (about 5%)
Some job sites here are:

Lived here for 20 years and best city in the world tag is a bit overblown in my humble opinion. The natural setting of mountains, ocean and amazing greenary makes it an outdoor paradise and climate is easy to take (if you can handle lots of overcast and rain in winter) but spring summer and fall are beautiful no extreme hot or cold and no humidity.

On 3000 USD per month you could get by; rent a condo or small townhouse in the downtown core of the city or go to the suburbs and find 2 bedroom t.h. for about $1000/month

Help me build a Home Gym?
Q. I am looking to spend as little as possible while still getting a decent workout for my: abs, pecs, arms and back. Looking to put on some muscle, not just tone. I am considering getting a Bowflex and a set of free weights, though I'm not sure if the bowflex is any good. Any tips?

A. The bowflex is mostly a marketing phenomenon. Thats why you never see it in any fitness clubs or exercise equipment shops. They rely on their infomercials to sell you, if you tried it first most people wouldnt like it. Despite what they tell you in the commercials its not necessarily for building muscle anyway, they promote a low impact exercise program with short breaks in between reps. People who like the bowflex are those who are not really that ambitious they just wanted a mild way to lose a few pounds. Besides the bowflex alone would cost you well over $1000 and you will probably not like it anyway.

The best way to accomplish what you are looking for is with a multi purpose bench press, a 7 ft Olympic bar, a curl bar and some cast iron olympic weights. This way you can do all of the core exercises to build your upper body. You should work your lower body also or you will start to look and feel awkward. You might want to get a power rack also for squats. The equipment should last a lifetime and you can get it all for about a thousand bucks shipping included. It could fit in a garage of extra bedroom. You can get great deals for free weights on line but be careful where you shop because there is a profound difference in price depending on how they ship the free weights. Make sure they are using a freight carrier, not UPS You could get everything within 10 business days of ordering.

To work your abs you can just do crunches everyday, or buy an ab machine for 2 or 3 hundered. I attached a good link where you could get some price quotes.
