I am 24 years old, and I want to immigrate to Canada.

Answer
While my family is from Toronto and I've visited many times I can't claim to have lived there. I have lived in Halifax for many years and will vouch for the fact it is a much more human city. It has a reputation as a friendly place, and people are generally open and welcoming. There are six universities there so the population is young, with lots of entertainment and cultural options. It has easy access to outdoor recreation. I'd take issue with the statement that there are "no sports teams": the major professional leagues are not represented but the city has great university sports, one of the country's top major junior hockey teams and minor league pro basketball.

While the larger city will naturally have more job choices, the unemployment rate in Halifax is traditionally lower than Toronto and most eastern Canadian cities: 6.0% last month, compared with 7.9% in Toronto. Halifax can be a more economical place to start out. A one-bedroom apartment downtown averages $958 in Halifax and $1500 in Toronto. Transit fares are 50 cents more per trip in Toronto. A restaurant meal for two is $5 more in Toronto. A case of beer is 50 cents more. Monthly utilities (heat/power/water) are $120 in Halifax and $178 in TO. And you can watch the Memorial Cup champion Halifax Mooseheads junior hockey club for $15-$16; the NHL Toronto Maple Leafs -- if you could find a ticket -- could set you back hundreds of dollars.

Relocating to Halifax from Montreal?

Carla

My husband and 2 month old daughter are thinking of relocating to Halifax,NS just because we're sick of Montreal. I'd like to know how is the job market there? We both are looking for jobs in the customer service field, I am perfectly bilingual (french -english) and he only speaks english.
Is it easy to find a job? 2 bedroom appartment ?

What do you guys think I should look for first a job there or an appartment ? it wont be for right now since Im still on maternity leave maybe next year. Thanks !

Answer
What aspects of customer service? Retail jobs are generally fairly easy to get, but almost all will pay minimum wage, and most are not full time. Bilingualism is not a necessity here, but depending on the job it would definitely be an asset. Housing in Halifax proper is getting to be quite expensive, and depending on when you are looking is quite competitive. We have four universities here and when the students flood in apartment hunting can get insane.

You've got plenty of time to look. If you can, set up both a job and an apartment before you move. If you or your husband work in a company that has offices here maybe a transfer would be a good bet. Of the two, I'd say find a place to live first. It's difficult to land a job without an address/local phone number. Here's a couple of websites so you can get a general idea of the housing/job markets.
