Q. Mrs. Johnson is looking to rent two different apartments. She wants the most amount of space she can afford. She is looking at 2 different options.
Option 1: The efficiency apartment: What is the area?

1. Set up the problem. (Yes it will have numbers and letters in the area and yes you will need to subtract the porch).

Option 1:
1) area = (2x +8)(x +3)
2) simplify (using Foil)
= 2x² + 6x + 8x + 24
= 2x² + 14x + 24
3) if x=8
=2 (8)² + 14(8) + 24
= 2(64) + 14(8) + 24
= 128 + 112+ 24
= 264 feet²
Option 2:
1) area = (x +4) (10x) - 40
2) simplify: 10x² + 40x - 40
3) if x = 4
= 10 (4)² + 40(4) - 40
= 10 (16) + 40 (4) -40
= 160 + 160 - 40
= 280 feet²
therefore Option 2 is bigger
