How much would it cost for a new HVAC system…?

peanutbute

â¦specifically to replace an OE 40-year-old HVAC system in a 983 sq. ft., 2 bed, 1 bath, above ground apartment? The central air crapped out in summer of 2009 and I had to go out and get a 112-pound "portable" room air conditioning unit. Originally set up in the living room, I moved the unit to my bedroom, where I spend a majority of my time at this place anyway, but every other room in the house is miserably hot, despite my best efforts to reduce the temperature when I power down the unit at night and during several periods throughout the day [i.e opening windows and operating fans] with night time lows in the 60's and 70's. Helpful advice is appreciated, along with at least a gisted price range on a whole new HVAC system.

Answer
You can pretty much count on spending $2K per ton. Also, please understand this: you are defeating the purpose of the concept of air conditioning when you open windows and run fans. (edit) -its OK to run one fan, pointing at you. Y'see, fans blow the heat off you, they do not cool the room. Fans actually heat the air slightly. Plus, your body is a heat & humidity pump set at 98.6F.

People think air conditioners simply blow cool air,,,, wrong. The first job of ANY air conditioner is to take the moisture out the air, then its easy to cool dry air...

Now, there are contributing factors; insulation, energy efficient doors & windows, and most important... a very well ventilated attic. If the heat is allowed to stay in there or propagate, that just radiates that heat back down into the house.
You can mitigate your circumstances by keeping direct sunlight out of the windows, keep boiling & frying to a minimum, and even running lights only when needed. If it won't ruin the outside appearance of your house, I've seen those exterior bamboo roll up blinds attached to the edge of the roof at the soffit, keeping sun off the exterior walls.

Do yourself a favor and get the highest SEER rating you can afford. It will pay for itself sooner than you think.

Math Help Please. FINDING AREA AND FOIL METHOD.?

Q. Mrs. Johnson is looking to rent two different apartments. She wants the most amount of space she can afford. She is looking at 2 different options.
Option 1: The efficiency apartment: What is the area?
1. Set up the problem. Remember that Area = length * width
2. Simplify (Hint: use the FOIL Method)
3. If x=8, then how many square feet is the apartment? Write your answer in a sentence.

Option 2: The One bedroom apartment
1. Set up the problem. (Yes it will have numbers and letters in the area and yes you will need to subtract the porch).
2. Simplify
3. If x=4, then how many square feet is the apartment? Write your answer in a sentence.

for question 1 http://s1363.photobucket.com/user/jonny285/media/math_zps6e1a1c75.png.html

and for question 2 http://s1363.photobucket.com/user/jonny285/media/math2_zpsf1894699.png.html

Answer
Option 1:
1) area = (2x +8)(x +3)
2) simplify (using Foil)
= 2x² + 6x + 8x + 24
= 2x² + 14x + 24

3) if x=8
=2 (8)² + 14(8) + 24
= 2(64) + 14(8) + 24
= 128 + 112+ 24
= 264 feet²

Option 2:
1) area = (x +4) (10x) - 40
2) simplify: 10x² + 40x - 40
3) if x = 4
= 10 (4)² + 40(4) - 40
= 10 (16) + 40 (4) -40
= 160 + 160 - 40
= 280 feet²

therefore Option 2 is bigger

Can we afford an apartment?

Lin

I'm working at a dominos as a delivery driver, and work almost 35 hours a week, plus tips on a lot of those hours. She's working as a sales rep for a company, and though she doesn't make all too much money, she does well enough. She's getting trained as an assistant manager now, making 1-2% of the office's total sales in addition to her own. She currently pays 300 in rent monthly to her parents, so she's used to paying rent by now. My store and her office are both a half hour away though- I spend 10 dollars in gas daily just going to and from work. I can make a solid 60 extra a week by moving closer, and so can she- so we'll have more money to put towards rent. There's a few nice 2 bedroom 1 bath apartments nearby for about 700, depending on how many luxuries we want. We're both nineteen, with not huge credit score histories but fair enough ones.

Think we can make it on our own?
Our families are stable. My dad makes about 100k a year, though we don't have money to really kick around, but still. She pays for most of her own food, and I eat very little around the house. We both own our own cars. Her paychecks total about 1-200 a week, and I can't tell you what 1-2% is because I honestly don't know how much the office makes itself. She makes 20% commission as is. And we want to move to Gilbert, AZ.
I'm also planning on getting another night shift job, maybe at walmart or something, if we can't make ends meet. As I'm not attending college (yet), I have a very free schedule. I plan to move up the ranks at dominos- I can be an assistant manager in 6 months if I work hard- and we plan on letting her finish her online schooling before I go to school myself, so one of us is always working while the other extends their career. I make a bit above minimum wage in store, and 4.50 plus tips an hour while delivering.

Answer
Okay, you've set a dream for yourself. Now you need to make it a goal by putting it into perspective.

15% of your incomes should go towards transportation (gas, car maintenance, insurance, etc.)
15% of your incomes should go towards debt repayment (if you have any debt. If you don't, then awesome, put this money towards savings or another category that needs it)
10% of your incomes should go to savings accounts (RSP account, even better; the sooner you start, even by a couple years, the more money you can make for your retirement).
35% of your incomes should go towards housing (that includes utility bills, rent, mortgage later, etc.)
25% of your incomes goes towards your life expenses (food, entertainment, short-term wants, etc.)

Now you haven't given any real figures; how much does your gf make a month? (If it varies from month to month, choose a month where her income was really low. It also sounds like things are moving around for her financially, so in 6 months when her job is 'settled', what will her income look like on average per month?). For the sake of argument, let's say her worst month was $1500 / month, and her future income will look like $2400 / month.

What about your job? How much do you make? Take your worst month, and again since financially things seem to be moving around for you (especially if you can make it as a manager), project how much you think you could make. For the sake of argument, let's say right now you make $1500 / month, and as a manager you would make $2000 / month.

This means that for RIGHT NOW, together you make $3 000. LATER you project you'll make $4 400.

These are your incomes for the month, the money you have to work with to make it all work. I'll work the numbers for your RIGHT NOW budget, but then see if you can figure out using my calculations the amounts of the projected 4 400.

15% x 3000 = $450 / month to spend on transportation. That means you have $112.50 a week for both of you to spend on transportation, and everything in that category.
15% x 3000 = $450 / month to spend on debt repayment (or put this somewhere else)
10% x 3000 = $300 / month to put into savings - you should never skip the saving step. EVER.
35% x 3000 = $1050 / month to put towards rent, utility, bills, etc. Decent, possibly managable.
25% x 3000 = $750 / month for life.... $187.50 a week for groceries, entertainment, clothing, gifts, wants.

NB: Whenever you move out, you should always have 6 months worth of expenses in your savings account; should one of you lose your job, you won't be able to afford your current lifestyle, and if you dont' have those savings, you could also find yourself homeless.

Your numbers might be a bit different, you didn't give them, so this is an imaginary plan. The principles are the same though, so apply the math, figuring out your budget, and then say to yourself, how much do we need to put away for that 6 month period? Figure out a number, and then figure out how many months it will take you to save that amount.

This is all about making your dream a real goal that you can accomplish.

What color should i paint my room?

Beach Bum

My furniture is white.. and my room is not small and not to big.. its a good size. im a 23 year old female. Any ideas?? I was thinking either tan, or maybe go cranberry color. If you can supply pics too, that would be cool! Much help appreciated, thanks :)

Answer
It depends on your bedding and the mood you want to create. Tan would look calm and can be used with lots of different colored bedding; cranberry would be warm and cozy but wouldn't be as versatile. If you love both, you could paint three walls tan and one cranberry, but either way find the bedding you love first, then decide.

How should I decorate my purple,Tiffany blue, and light green teen room?

liveoncelo

I already have a few things picked out but here is the general idea:
My room is a 13 by 13 feet square with a window smack in the middle of one wall and closets taking up another wall, so basically I have two walls to work with. My walls currently are painted a light lavender color called Weeping Wisteria by Behr, but i want to add more flair to it but painted each wall two colors (light purple on top and a deeper purple on bottom). For the deeper purple I'm thinking of going with the color Pandora (http://www.google.com/imgres?q=weeping+wisteria+paint+chart+behr&um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1248&bih=889&tbm=isch&tbnid=0y30dw3dg9eoUM:&imgrefurl=http://www.materials-world.com/paint-colors/behr/behr-colorsmart/behr-colorsmart-32.htm&docid=KM1oK9kIvVElvM&imgurl=http://www.materials-world.com/paint-colors/behr/behr-colorsmart/images/behr-colorsmart-32.gif&w=705&h=355&ei=l9ApT7TOAYL20gG9ttzYCg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=308&sig=107426641048924830618&page=1&tbnh=106&tbnw=211&start=0&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0&tx=112&ty=53)...Would that look good with the weeping wisteria (also shown in the link)...For the furniture, I have selected this collection http://www.furniturexo.com/Exquisite-Youth-Sleigh-Bedroom-Set-Signature-Design-By-Ashley-Furniture-B188-SLEIGH-SET-p-16626.html ... I think it is beyond gorgeous...
I plan to build my room off of my bedding, which I want to be from PBTeen... However, I have not chosen what I like, and anything that ties in the light lavender, tiffany blue, and light green colors will surely be a favorite of mine...Any ideas?

Basically I am asking for design tips, like things I could put on my room, or dresser or nightstands, etc...and a pretty bedding design from PBteen :)
How could I decorate my room...What theme could I make with these colors....How should I arrange the furniture.. How do I make sure that no one color is too overpowering? What lightning for my nightstands should I get?

Any random room design questions and answers will be greatlyyyy appreciated (you have no idea)....Ill give 5 stars to the best answer :) PLease help Im so lost!
