About how much does a queen mattress set cost? never bought mattress before, thank you in advance?

Q. i got my bedroom set about 12 yrs ago, its still really nice but i want a new mattress set, im not into brands, just want the average mattress, someone is selling a queen set for 350 and since ive never bought mattress before i don't know if im getting ripped off. thank you so much in advance

Answer
A good one will cost several hundreds if you are very very savvy, to $1000 and up. Anything less, and I would look verrry carefully at it, you could regret it quickly as the quality is likely to be poor.

Go to your library and look up Consumer Reports Magazine back issues, look for their past mattress buying advice article. They tell what makes up a good mattress, usually higher coil count =more firmness. Comfort is a personal preference.

If you need just a mattress (and not a set), or don't care that they match, you can find those in mis-match sales or end of season sales (they change the fabric).

I am not a fan of foam mattresses, pillow tops, or any kind of anything padded extra, as you can add more but you can't remove it if it is part of the mattress, something I regret with the tempurpedic-foam mattress I have and hate.

I got this bed frame with storage underneath for my teen's mattress, and it holds it at the height of a normal bed-with-box-spring. It is very firm, and can make up for a poor quality mattress because it is SO firm, but you may not want that as it sounds like you already have a bed frame? I include info on it because some folks use this frame with a latex foam mattress (all foam like sleep number/ temperpedic, etc.) and say a platform like this is all they need (no boxspring). Read the reviews for more info from folks who have that type of foam mattress. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Slumber1-Bed-Frame-Twin-Full/10151232

How much might it cost to rent a bedroom set?

Q. I'll be staying in this place for 7 months, but then I'm leaving to study abroad in Spain and I don't want to have to pay the storage fees after I leave.
All I need is maybe a queen sized bed, a dresser, and a nightstand. Nothing too fancy.
But then of course when I come back I'll need more furniture too, so should I go ahead and buy some cheap furniture and just pay the storage costs?

Where can i find teen bedroom accessories?

Q. Good websites to find comforters, night stands, dressers, desks, vanity, lounge chairs, throw pillows, blankets, rungs, lamps, string lights, wall decorations, storage, picture frames, mirrors, decorative cork boards and magnetic dry erase boards, desk accessories? I want to do a zebra and hot pink theme and Im trying to find accessories to match.. Please help! I've already looked at PBteen.com and wakeupfrankie.com, but they're a little pricey... Any othe websites?

Answer
I'm assuming you've already bought bedding, if not, maybe something like this:

http://www.beyond-bedding.com/hot-pink-zebra-print-full-queen-teens-kids-bedding-set.html

For furniture, try ikea.com - it will be inexpensive and you'll be able to get the night stands, dressers, and desks there. I'd go with either white or black furniture to complement the bedding.
You can also try walmart and target if you are concerned with price.

Wall decorations- The bedding set shows wall hangings which can be purchased at the same site as the bedding (beyond-bedding). In addition, you can buy decorative throw pillows, windows treatments, Funky Zebra Fabric Memory/Memo Photo Bulletin Board, and even lamp shades

Frames - Buy these anywhere. You can get these very cheaply. I'd suggest a $1 can of spray paint so you can change the color of the frames for a customized look (I'd spray a few black, a few white and perhaps a few hot pink - though you could easily paint a zebra design - cheap and easy)

Mirrors - Again, buy the cheapest mirror you can find and custom paint it (Walmart or other discount store). If you must have a zebra print mirror, check this one out:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=zebra+mirror&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=8249285435254738615&ei=pIckTc7QL8T48Aayo8CGAg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CDgQ8wIwAw#

Rug - Walmart has several different style choices. Like this one:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Home-Dynamix-Zone-7160-Zebra-Print-Rug/12087183?findingMethod=rr

Blanket/Throw: Again, walmart has a cheap solution that comes in several colors

http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=zebra+throw&ic=48_0&Find=Find&search_constraint=4044

As far as accessorizing goes, keep in mind that a little zebra goes a long way. If you have zebra print bedding, you may want to consider solids for the lounge chair and/or throw and accent pillows. I'd pick up a lot of solids for accessories (black or white vase maybe with hot pink flowers) again, solid colored picture frames. Walmart also sells cork boards. You can paint these or cover them in a zebra fabric (or complementary fabric) and embellish it with grosgrain hot pink ribbon.

Please remember that a cheap can of spray paint can help you achieve the look you are after. Best of Luck.

I have a bedroom set that I'm looking to sell, I want to get as much out of it as possible, but don't want to over price it. Included is a fairly large night stand, with 2 drawers, a long dresser with 7 drawers, and a bed frame that could either be queen or full.. but I would include my queen mattress and box frame. All is in good condition, the only thing that's wrong with it is there's a small ring on the night stand. I'm pretty sure it is the Thomasville brand, I know it is a name brand, but it's in storage and I cannot remember which it is.

Answer
Have you ever tried the online service called freecycle? You list what you have for pickup and then you list what you need and look at the other listings to see if others have also listed those same items.

No one pays on either end of the deal. It works great if they have it in your town or a nearby larger town.

Good luck!! : )

Fix for a small bedroom with a queen canopy bed?

storage bedroom set queen

storage bedroom set queen image

My bedroom is TINY, about 10x11, and I have a queen sized bed.

I was thinking that rather than ditch my incredibly comfy mattress and spend a small fortune on a new bed set, I might need to get creative. My bed is a wrought-iron canopy with straight bars, so the rails at the top form a perfect rectangle. I was thinking that done correctly, the rails might serve as support for a storage platform.

What I want to do is get a piece of wood, about half the width of the bed and slightly longer, with semicircular cut-outs at the corners on one side - such that when I set it up on top of the rails on one side of the bed, it will sit firmly on three bars, and the cutouts will let it sit flush on the bars without having the corner posts push it off. I'm thinking if I get semicircular brackets, I can fix them over the bars on the underside of the board in such a way as to prevent slippage. I'll paint it black to match the iron of the bars, then affix lace or a beaded trim to the exposed side over the sleeping area, and maybe hang some mini-lights from it.

My question is: for lightweight items, will this work? I don't want to put books up there or anything like that, but I'd really like to maximize the space I have so my room isn't so crowded!! I'm thinking stacks of sweaters, extra blankets, hats, wrapping paper... things like that.

What do you think? Could that work?
Thanks Jesse :)
I haven't seen the brackets, but envision them as a perfect semicircle with a small flat area on each end through which to drive a nail or seat a screw, such that it could be affixed directly to the board in such a way as to encase the bar on the underside of the board. Now that you mention it, I suppose measurements would have to be exact to prevent the bar from slipping when there is movement, like if the bar is 3/4" in diameter, the bar would need to encase an area exactly that height... I don't think it could come loose, but thinking on it, it does seem items falling off could be a problem unless the board is totally secure, not just prevented from falling but actually from moving at all, is that right?

RE: 2x3... Just on the length of the underside not resting on the bars? So if the board is 82", then the 2x3 would be 78" or so, so it would along the length of the board from just inside one bar to just inside the other, preventing sagging

Answer
"edit"

Without seeing what brackets you are planning on using to prevent slippage I won't say. Sounds like you planned this out pretty good though, only thing is measurements. If it is going the length of the bed the board will sag on one side just from its own weight. I would run a 2x3 along the unsupported side to support it. The slippage concerns me, little movement could make it fall unless brackets hold it well.

feel free to bug me if you need any advice

What is the origin of the words kingsize and queensize?

Answer
To better appreciate the minimal king size platform beds; consider a brief history of its evolution, and that of its American cousin, the mysterious box spring.

The Egyptian pharaohs of 3500 B.C. were the first known people to sleep on dedicated pieces of elevated furniture. Before that time, king size platform beds were essentially portable – all-too-organic constructions of straw, leaves, fleece, or animal skins spread out on the hard ground. In Europe, king size loft beds weren’t common until the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and seventeenth centuries; stationary but adjustable, their king size platform bedroom sets and wooden frames held grids of ropes that could be tightened as needed.

Queen Mattress Dimensions Around the World?

• Americas, New Zealand, and Australia - queen size standard is 60x80 inches

• Latin America and Continental Europe - queen size is 63x79 inches

• Norway - queen size is equal to 2 single or twin mattresses at 60x79 inches

• United Kingdom and Ireland - queen size mattresses are also called standard doubles and are 60x78 inches

A California queen, most often found in the U.S., is 60 inches by 84 inches, offering more length for taller individuals. Simmons, a mattress manufacturer in the U.S., makes an Olympic/Expanded Queen size bed that is 66x80 inches. It's primarily a novelty bed.

King size platform beds suspended sleepers over a cushion of air, which was far warmer than a cold, damp floor. It kept floor dust off the king size bedroom furniture, bed linens and discouraged pets and critters from nesting. Height also made it easier to change bed linens and climb in and out of bed.

The earliest modern king size beds mattresses were simple sacks of straw or down, and eventually of cotton and wool. But in 1871, industry spawned the innerspring mattress, a bouncy entity filled with a field of vertical steel coils; its companion, the box spring, was invented soon afterward.

The box spring literally is a box: a wood frame king size platform beds with drawers holding a series of heavy steel coils, upholstered with an outer layer of foam and fabric. Its purpose is simple: to ventilate the king size platform beds and lift it to a convenient height. Manufacturers claim that it also prolongs the king size leather platform beds life by absorbing some of the sleepers’ weight and movement, and they insist that each king size platform storage beds be supported by its companion box spring and no other. If you buy king or queen size platform beds without its box spring, its warranty is invalidated.
