Attention Mommies: Your best tips for organization for a mommy of 4?

Q. I have four kiddos ages 5 and under, and my house drives me crazy! Any of your best cleaning/organization tips would be great.... and also, I already know about Flylady, but I'm having trouble with her system. Any tips would be great!

A. I hope I can help you, I am a foster Mom and have 12 nieces and nephews and lots of family in and out through out the week, so messes seem to come with the amount of feet in and out the door. I know about Flylady, Home Organization, Cleaning Queen, and who ever else you can think of. I had piles of cleaning, organization and clutter buster books, and the art of feng shie. You name it, chances are I have it or read it or got it at the library. Here are my best tips for getting on top of things, these are the gleaned, condensed and just plain learned the hard way stuff. Get a timer and a box. Set the timer for 10 minutes and grab the box, simply walk through the house grabbing items you hate, do not like, broken, or stuff you already have 10 of. Into the box. When the bell goes off, tape the box shut and A. Throw it in the trash B. Put it in the car and next errand run, drop it at your charity box, C. List it up on Freecycle or Craigslist and give it away or ask for a small amount of money. D. If money is the issue, take pics and put it up on Ebay and sell it, pack it and send it to someone else to dust! Continue doing this, in addition to your "cleaning schedule". After a few days of doing this, you should have just stuff you LOVE LOVE LOVE or NEED NEED NEED. Now look around, do you have items Aunt Selma gave you, and you were gonna re-paint, but never did? GET RID OF IT, give it to a friend, Freecycle or Craigslist it or set aside a time this week to paint it, fix it or whatever to it, otherwise, out it goes! You have 4 kids? Well, even at the tender age of 2, kids can understand a few basic rules. One toy out, one toy in rule. If they get a toy out, they must return it to get another one out. They can pick up stuff from the floor and hand it to you. They can "help Mommy", THEY LOVE HELPING MOMMY do stuff. They can sweep, they can dust, they can pick up. You can have them HELP with laundry, they can learn to fold clothes with you, as you show them how YOU want it done, or if you do not care, they can FOLD THEIR OWN and put it away in THEIR own drawers. You can have them HELP you load the washing machine, maybe put the soap in YOU measured and so on. This is not CHORE, this is fun for them, if you MAKE IT FUN!. The rewards, if you need to use them, can be, "if you help me clean the porch, we can paint some birdhouses", they can help lay out newspaper to protect a surface from paint, get the paper plates, and so on, they can also help throw them out when you are done. Once I got down to things I love love love and need need need, I found I had less to dust, less to fixate and get upset cause it was taking up space and I still had not fixed it painted it or whatever and just got mad at myself for letting it suck up space and walk around it, I found I could get things done a little quicker, cause the space was opening up. I found some things that were important to me, I do NOT dig filth and was not willing to let my standards down for cleanliness for dishes, clothing, floors and MY bedroom. I could however, give two figs about WHAT the kids drawers looked like, as long as the clothes WERE clean in them, their clothes were NOT on the floor and that at least twice a week I could see a clean floor in their rooms and that the kennels.....uh....er....rooms, were swept, hosed (mopped) and in general CLEANED. Same for bedding sheets. I want them washed once a week, I don't care if they slept on TOP of the covers (as one tried to explain to me as her reason for NOT bringing her sheets down once a week) no DEAL! They come down, even if NO ONE slept on them! LOL! Clothes come down daily into the laundry room. We don't do "Can I have my white t-shirt with the little roses in an hour" routine, when you have 10 other little white t-shirts you can wear instead! If you want it done for tomorrow, then it should be here in time for the next load of whites 2 hours ago. Now the kids I have here, family included, now range from 6 to 20, but I have had them from the day they were born. As soon as they can walk, we make with the "helping". We want kids to "help", we encourage, we reward and we make it a rule! Sometimes, the kids get lazy, try to get over, or just plain don't want to do it. No problem! They don't get to do the fun stuff either, no baseball, no movies, no crafts, no library and so on. HEY! I shouldn't have to do all this myself, I had help making the mess. I have learned to SHOW the kids and HELP the kids when I want something done a CERTAIN WAY!. Like I have this thing about towels, so normally, I FOLD THEM MYSELF! Now the kids know, if they are GOING TO HELP, they need to fold the towels in half, then in half and then in thirds, otherwise, leave them to me, which, sometimes, they do, and sometimes, they do it and give me the "look what I did!" and for that, I GIVE PRAISE, I resist the urge to NIT PIC, as the towels are folded how I like, so what its not perfect, let it go and move on. The things I do not let go of are CLEAN! The dishes must not have food particles on them, no soap residue, and they must not be holding water. One kid couldn't get the idea of adding PRESSURE to pots and pans and dirty dishes, until after a few weeks of being on dish duty, I offered her the plate of MY CHOICE for her to eat off of. I picked one she claimed was cleaned, I ask if she'd eat off one I picked if she thought they were all clean, sure, she said, ok, HOW ABOUT THIS ONE? Uh....no? Well I said, "I don't want to eat off of it EITHER, so now, you wash it again, and then you will eat off THAT plate, clean or dirty!" Now it may sound a little mean, but she TOTALLY got the point! I didn't yell, I didn't punish, I just offered her to eat off ANY plate I picked, and if she was cleaning them, she should be SURE it was clean enough for her to eat off of it, if she thought I was gonna eat off of it. All the sudden, those dishes were clean! Some is also, getting in there and helping them. Some kids simply don't know and we forget, they haven't learned it yet! A good "How about I "help" you with your room today?" and DO IT, and tell them, this is how I want you to clean this, scrub like this, wash this that way and put this over here and take out your trash in this bag, WHILE THEY ARE DOING IT WITH YOU! It can be fun, I talk about school, friends, an maybe talk about clothes, I may even get a little fashion show of what do you think about this with that? Its quality time together AND a chore getting done completely. Now this isn't something you do EVERY DAY, but here and there, you do it. I have 2 days a week that we are dealing with trash. One is on Wednesday, as the trash goes out Wednesday evening and is picked up on Thursday. I empty the fridge of compost and guess what this Was? That way it isn't stinking up the trash cans all week. Then on Saturday, all the trash cans are emptied again (minus fridge waste) and put in the bins outside while we have our push for clean floors, laundry, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Now during the week, daily, we have a dish chore, a floor chore for the kitchen, dining room, butlers pantry and living room. Those floors must be swept, mopped or vacuumed daily. I like the bathrooms cleaned at least twice weekly for the kids, my own, I am picky, so mine is one little chore daily, but on Saturday, anything I missed and a wash down top to bottom. Beds are weekly, clothes and laundry, as a load forms (whites, light colors, dark colors, towels). Hallways are weekly and throw rugs as needed (usually once a week to 2 weeks, depending on how much use and filth shows up, once they LOOK dirty, up they come and on to the laundry). The kitchen is wiped down daily, but a total wash down of counters, stoves and so on is on Saturday. I pick one to two things a week to tackle, such as a closet, organizing a corner of the basement for the gardening, bicycles, tools, Etc. I may wash down the cabinets in the kitchens or a bathroom, empty a linen closet, empty a drawer. Using the timer is a good way to get into this habit. Set the timer for no more than 20 minutes, do not answer the phone, invite no one over. Empty the junk drawer in the kitchen, sort it, throw stuff out, dispose of dead batteries, file it, whatever. Timer goes off, be done! This one worked really good for me, because I would accomplish SOMETHING that was needing to be done and it was something small, but in the end, had a big impact as they added up, one at a time! If you can fit in one afternoon a month, to say, clean out the garage, fine. If not, go corner by corner for 20 minutes at a crack. You can organize one section, one shelf, one drawer in 10-20 minutes. Add it up and at the end of a month, its all done! If you have a zone that gets on your nerves, just give it 10 minutes, grab a box, fill it with stuff that doesn't belong in there, put it where it belongs. Next time, grab the duster, run and dust everything you can in 10 minutes. Next time, empty a drawer and so on. Get a schedule and determine what days you will have free time to say tackle something more extensive, and plan something FUN afterwards. Like cleaning out the garage, a basement, the attic. Spend two hours on it with the family, everyone HELPS! Kids can carry, kids can put this on that shelf, they can be great little gofers and picker uppers. If you have rooms that aren't that important right now, let it go, for now, deal with it when YOU WANT to. I think half of the problem with getting organized and staying clean, is the feeling we must do it all in one day, and the simple fact is, it didn't get dirty overnight and its not going to get DONE overnight either. RELAX! Do it in baby steps, just work on the stuff that giv

ANY IDEAS ON MATCHING DRESSERS, VANITY SETS, OTTOMANS, AND SO ON IS TRUELY APPRECIATED

A. Off white (shabby-chick) furniture and change all the knobs to big english drop pulls in an oil rubbed bronze or matte black.Pick up the design of the metal work on the bed somewhere like some black and white/cream toile wallpaper on one wall or lamp shades or draperies etc. in a black toile, not too much though or it will look overdone. I would get bedding similar too what is shown on the bed, it's perfect.Would also do walls in an off-white, this keeps things subtle/dreamy/romantic and will make the bed"pop" if your into that look. I am! Love the bed!

I need a bedroom makover please help me?
Q. I have a small bedroom...i Want to be able to relax and do my homework in....it needs to be very organzied....and i want a tropical feel

A. A big trick a lot of people over look when re-doing small rooms is the use of mirrors! Now Im NOT saying go and PUt floor to ceiling mirrors in your room, but when your in a small room, simply just adding a mirror to the wall makes the room feeling a lot More open.

So since you have a small room painting the walls a dark color would be a bad idea! Dark colors cause rooms to feel smaller and sometimes cramped! So for your room I would suggest a cream color or an off-white:

http://www.framingsupplies.com/images/Crescent/Misc/WhiteSampler.jpg

Any of those would work! The off white lets the room feel open, and also symbolizes the sand of a tropical Paradise!
If that's too boring and you want to get a little more interesting with the wall color go with a light or pastel blue:

http://www.bubblyfunk.co.uk/images/Cardstock%208x8%20Pastel%20Blue.JPG

This is a fun color, but still keeps the room feeling open!

Now since you want tropical, and you want a place to do your homework, a desk is essential! Having a wicker plain white desk Gives it that clean, organized feel, but still keeps the room fun and tropical:

http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/63/01/16/81/0063011681107_215X215.jpg

Also a white wicker bed frame would be ideal to continue the look throughout the room. I don't know what size bed you have. Queen.? Twin? But as long as you understand the white wicker than that's fine:

http://maggymoon.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/180-classic-white-rattan-bed.jpg

This is a JcPenny Bed set! Well priced. Its comfortable well made and simple. So as you get older if you don't like tropical anymore you wont have to change your bed set you can just change the theme:

http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6E.aspx?GrpTyp=ENS&ItemID=1649c84&DeptID=70750&CatID=77512&SO=0&x5view=1&Ne=4294957900+877+1031+1007+580+8+966+18+904+949+833&pagesize=1&shopperType=G&N=4294940584&Nao=0&PSO=0&CmCatId=70750|77512

I'm not sure weather you are a boy or a girl, but those bed sets have different colors. For the boys I would recommend the blue and brown one. The blue will go well with the wall. For the girls I would choose the yellow, pink, and orange one. IT would be fun and symbolize the sunset.

Since you don't have a lot of room in your room. I suggest adding a lot of wall decoration! One way to get GREAT wall decorations (And have a lot of fun doing it) Is for you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/friends/family to take a ton of pictures! I don't know about you, but I love taking pictures! Or you could get pictures you print off from online that have to do with the beach. Surfboards, sunsets, birds, etc. Then once all of your pictures are printed go and get frames for them! They don't have to be the same frame! Then get spray paint (the same white that is in your room) and spray paint all of the frames! Then put the pictures in the frame and hang them in a similar set up like this: (except with more pictures or course!)

http://www.manobluedesign.com/manoblueblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/picture-1.png

It will look really modern and cool! It also will be a lot of fun taking the pictures AND will add a personal touch to your room! Also when painting your room, have the doors and trim stay white. If you do choose the yellow comforter your walls can be the orange that matches your bed set.

If you want to add more fun stuff to your walls go and buy a stencil. For guys you could get a stencil of a surfboard that matches the color of your bed set! And for girls, you could get the stencil of a tropical flower! Pink maybe that matches yours! Also you said you wanted to feel relaxed. I quick and simple thing that could make your room feel relaxed is adding a simple water feature! :

I want to buy online bedding, lighting, flooring for decorating my home.?
Q.

A. I telling you.

#1. The Lithonia Lighting 11750 BN M4 Saturn One-Light Fluorescent Semi Flush-Mount Ceiling Fixture is a contemporary light fixture has a white acrylic diffuser globe housed by two brushed nickel steel rings. The Saturn adds style to any room in the house. Also works for light commercial applications.

This Lithonia fixture is very well built and was easy to install. All the included hardware is of reasonable quality. The ballast and lamp are off brands so we'll see how long they last, but they're easy enough to replace later.

Please check the 20% discount at here >> http://goo.gl/AcPG7.

#2. look at this 8 Pieces Luxury Brown, Cream, and Black with Floral Linen Comforter (92"x96" in Inch) Set / Bed-in-a-bag Queen Size Bedding. This comforter set is gorgeous. However, the under side of it is very thin and I'm constantly afraid that it's going to rip. And the top of it is VERY scratchy. Luckily I bought this for my guest bedroom, not for my master bedroom. So since it's only used a few times a year, I'm ok with it being nicer to look at then to feel. I probably wouldn't have purchased this if I had felt it in person before buying though.

Basement Bedroom Decor.?

Q. I have a Bedroom in the basement down at my dad's and it is kinda "Blah" and i wanna make it more relax instead of just white walls and the paint they have up now is peeling off the wall. Is there a special type of pain i need to get to cover the cement brick walls? What colors should i do, im not into light colors but i like vibrant colors. I have a cherry queen set bedroom suit down there now and i want that to go with the theme/decor of the room too. Im also into the black and white photos in the frames with the overhead light on them. I don't have a big budget to do this room on so nothing to pricey please

Thank you,
Kate

A. First you have use a scraper and wire brush to remove the old flaking paint, then wash the walls with a scrub brush using ammonia and a squeeze of dishsoap in a bucket of water. (tsp-tri sodium phosphate works best but ammonia/dish soap works great and saves you some money)
You have to use a primer/sealer before you paint, the best primer for brick
aaaww sorry...reading thru your questions I see you never pick an answer

ps. DO NOT use exterior paint indoors

Bedroom decor?
Q. Any ideas on how to decorate this on a TIGHT budget? I'm open to all suggestions on colors, themes, etc.:) Details appreciated.
My bedroom : hardwood floors, no furniture yet. Off white walls (can paint), White doors and trim. Two tall, narrow windows. About 7 or 8 feet tall, start about two feet off floor and about 4 inches from ceiling. Pretty small. We have a queen size bed and after that there is probably enough room for say, a dresser and desk and then a bit left to walk through. Not much space at all. Just looking for some fresh, creative ideas from people instead of websites:)

A. Well how about visiting your local budget store (like Walmart or Target if in the US) and look for side wicker tables. They are usually cheaper. I would go with White.
Then pick a fresh clean color for your walls. Like spa blue or light lemon yellow.
Get a white down comforter and white sheets. You can find these for cheap at budget stores.
Find a throw blanket in the color of your walls and fold at the edge of bed for a splash of color. Get white curtains. Find a lamp that goes well with the walls and also a canvas painting to hang right above the bed. (Target has some very cute canvas paintings for all color themes -some under $20).
It depends on what YOU like obviously. But on a tight budget- you can do a crisp clean Summer Spa room for very little money. Set a couple colored candles on a dresser and just give your room an airy feel.
I would skip any kind of carpet or rug altogether. Hardwood floors are the BEST.
As for bed. Just get a bed frame (especially if you hang a painting above the bed) and mattress. To give the bed more feel - add loads of pillows instead.

Do you have any fun facts about the Tudors/their spouses?
Q. For a powerpoint presentation... Here's what I have so far:

-Ann Boleyn and Catherine Howard supposedly haunt the Tower of London
-Ann Boleyn had 6 fingers on her right hand
-One of the men she was falsely accused of adultery with was her own brother
-It is speculated that Henry VIIIs cause of death was syphilis
-By age 54, Henry VIII was so obese, he had to be carried everywhere by sedan chair

A. Henry VII was the first Tudor king. He married Elizabeth of York, the daughter of Edward VI to make his reign legal. He is also said to have had a part in the murder of the Princes in the Tower, the sons of Edward IV & legimate heirs to the throne. Their murders have been blamed on Richard III, their uncle because of Shakespeare's play but the evidence doesn't bear this out. Two skeletons were found in 1674 & presumed to be theirs. The White Tower in the Tower of London is supposed to be haunted by two crying small boys ever since their disappearance.
Henry VII had 2 sons - Arthur & Henry. Arthur married Catherine of Aragon & then died giving the throne to Henry & his wife too which later gave Henry a reason to divorce her when he fell for Anne Boleyn. She may have had six fingers on her right hand but there's no proof. She was accused of adultery with her brother, her favourite musician & countless others. The funny thing is she had kept Henry on the string without sleeping with him for years, the first time was when she got pregnant with Elizabeth.
Henry married six times, three Katherines - one divorced, one executed & one out-lived him, two Annes - one executed & one divorced & one Jane who bore him his only son, Edward & died.
Yes, he probably had syphillis. This is what made him almost sterile - six wives - three kids & so hard to get along with. It's called syphillitic megalopathy. He was king & always got his way so when he thought someone was against him, they didn't have a chance.
Not only was he obese, he had gout! Yuck! He had open, running smelly sores on his leg & couldn't stand the pain when someone touched it even by accident. A lot of people died for that. That's one reason he married his last wife, Catherine Parr. She'd been married twice before to rich old men that she nursed until they died & left her a lot of money. Maybe she had something to do with all those deaths.
Her last husband was Thomas Seymour who only married her because he couldn't get Mary or Elizabeth. He wanted to be king & seduced Elizabeth while they were living at Catherine's place. She died in childbirth & so did the child. Thomas was executed by his brother Edward & nephew Edward (who he used to keep in pocket money so that surprised the heck out of him)
Mary married Phillip of Spain & being a rabid Catholic burned a lot of people at the stake for being Protestant. This earned her the nick name Bloody Mary. She thought she was pregnant a couple of times but the pregnancies turned out to be phantom pregnancies - all in her head. Then she died.
Elizabeth I inherited from Mary. She almost inherited her husband too, Phillip asked her to marry him but she said no which set off a big war between her & Spain. Her boyfriend, Robert Dudley's wife "fell down a flight of stairs" & broke her neck after Elizabeth became Queen. Robert wanted to get married, Elizabeth didn't. Her last boyfriend, Robert Essex was Dudley's stepson. He was executed after he ran into her bedroom early one morning & saw her without her make-up - BAD MOVE - off with his head! There were a lot of guys in between the two Roberts but she figured they were mostly interested in the crown not her so she never married (but she did fool around - hell, she was Queen, she could do what she wanted) Elizabeth was the last of the Tudors.
There were only five Tudor Kings & Queens but they DID leave their mark in history.

Bedroom Re-design help!?
Q. Heres what I've got:
Walnut (dark) brown '80s Henredon bedset. (dresser, 2 night stands & queen bed) It's gorgeous and I love it. I also have a really ultra-modern desk made of light maple veneer and black metal. It is ugly and I want to get rid of it but can't. :(

The walls in my room are tan (also gorgeous and it can't change) The trim (mouldings etc) are off white, and the carpet is a gray/tan color. The accents in my room (door knobs, lighting closet pulls) are bronze AKA fake gold.

I am looking for an idea for a color scheme (involving curtains, rug, bedding, towel sets and accessories) that blend well together (not too matchy-matchy) and conveys a more traditional sophisticated feel.
I also have a really ultra-modern desk made of light maple veneer and black metal.

I can't and wont change the paint, fixtures, carpet or furniture.

Please nothing purple or pink!
I've been looking but I just can't find anything. Please help! :D
Haha. The cow is fine in her barn... It's ME that needs a new room!

A. lol i have it all pictured. red and gold. they would bring out a dark woods natural beauty and it already sounds like the carpet and walls are neutral. as far as the desk goes, i would recommend making or having someone make a slip cover for it. that may sound strange, but a tailored slipcover that fits the desk exactly could look very nice, and the desktop is still functional while hiding the drawers and parts that just don't go, i can photo one at my dads house for you if you'd like something visual. email me if you are interested in what the heck im talking about: annej9683@yahoo.com
