I am moving into a condo in SACRAMENTO, CA. I am living in a 3 bedroom/ 2.5 bathroom. I have 2 roommates and our rent is $1200. Rent INCLUDES Water and Cable. We have to set up our own Electric Services, Sewage, and Internet. HOW do you set these up? Who do you call? How much do each of these typically cost in SACRAMENTO per month?

You call each utility company and open an account, the company will want a cash deposit on average of 300. You tell them when you want service to start and after asking you questions such as Name the Account will be opened under, SSN, Bank, Credit Report and so on.
No guess on the costs per service. Electric and Sewage are dependent on your usage and will vary each month. Internet can be as little as 20 and as high as 50.

San Jose is okay. I was born and raised in San Jose. Moved to Sacramento for a few years and came back. Honestly, I only live here because my family does otherwise I would live somewhere that housing is more affordable.

San Jose has pretty much whatever you could want - malls, movie theaters, golf, miniature golf, bowling, water slide park, mountain hiking, parks, etc. San Francisco is about an hour drive and the beach is about a 30 minute drive. It almost never snows (something like once every 20 years), there is not a lot of rain, there are not typically many 100+ degrees days although the last couple of years we did have a heat wave that lasted a couple of weeks each summer.

It is an expensive place to live. The average rent for a 2 bedroom is $1500. You can find some cheaper but they may not be places or areas you would really want to live at. As with most big cities there is crime. However, there is no more crime than any other comparable size city. We don't have four distinctive seasons like other areas do. The people are not as friendly as in other states. Traffic can be horrible at commute time.

Expensive but very nice areas near San Jose are:
Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno

Moderate expense and nice areas would include:
West San Jose, Campbell, Cupertino, parts of Sunnyvale and parts of Santa Clara.

Places that are cheaper but less desirable:
East San Jose, South San Jose and parts of Milpitas

There is mix of political views here. Most people I run in to do not talk politics as people seem to be pretty set in their views of things.

Q. Seriously, there could not be a uglier and gloomier place to live in. Most of the roads aren't paved. The one or two malls we have our probably our biggest money-makers. Everyone looks like they're still stuck in either the 1980's or like they just walked off the set for a western. The infrastructure is falling apart. The schools are awful. The list of problems goes on.

It's depressing though because I see such potential for the area if the city officials would just apply money towards the right projects instead of opening up new night-clubs and bars on every street corner. Why causes towns to become like this?

If you're talking about the Victor Valley specifically, remember that the Victor Valley was always little more than a bedroom community except for a few mining jobs and military-related jobs till George AFB closed down.

Even the addition of a prison or two, a Wal-Mart distribution center, and whatever else won't do much to generate a lot of income or tax-related income in the area. And the creation of jobs in the services sector are meaningless if people spend half their income on gasoline to commute down the hill and end up with hardly any remaining discretionary income.

So if the bottom falls out of California in general as businesses up and relocate to other states, people also flee to other states, and California's and the U.S.' economies go from bad to worse, then of course the Victor Valley is going to get hit worse than various other parts of the state. The area has no "potential" unless lots of things happen: more factories or corporate HQs are placed there, CA gov't becomes more buisness friendly, Sacramento begins to use its money wisely, etc.

To move out or not to move out?

Q. I currently live with my boyfriend of 3years and 10 months... I was looking for a place to live and he offered me to move in with his mom, so I don't have to pay rent. This happened after a year of dating. He lived in Sacramento... After 5 months he came back without notice and began living together. Now that he was back and after a few months, I wanted us to move out. I finally found a place...(it was his mom, his somewhat disable brother of 28 years old, my 5 year old daughter and us living in this 3 bedroom home, where my daughter sleeps in our room.) This is a different story regarding his family, but somehow it has something to do with me wanting to move out… He loves me and I love him, but I don't want to live with him anymore. I'm just afraid I will leave someone who is the one. I don't want to break up. I just don't want to live with him. I'm at the point where I have nothing else to give him and he has just begun to do anything for me and has talked about marriage. He wants to do anything for me at any cost, I feel smothered, I am way past that stage. I'm thinking about my future and my daughters, and not so much him anymore. I've tried talking to him about our goals we should set and just a week or two ago he wants to grow a relationship with my daughter, wants us to save, wants me to help him save, wants to share all his feelings and how much money he brings in and what he owes. Basically, he wants me in his life and wants to share it with me. It was an eye opener because he knows every single little thing about me and after so long he now wants to let me in his world. (in his mind, my money, my child, my life and everything around me is His. His kids, his money, his life and everything around him are his and Not mine.)....
What it really comes down to, I can't make up my mind if I should move on without him? Or Stay, everything is changing and it’s on my favor what happens next? ...
All I wanted was to start a family, just us 3. But now he just wants to begin a relationship with my daughter.... I have my mind confused. Is it really worth losing someone you love over something that can gradually change?
It's hard to tell him I love him. I'm disappointed, I can't believe I wasn't looking out for my child and myself and just concerned about my boyfriend....
I use to live with my boyfriends mother. I found a place for only us, She tagged along. This is my house, My name is on the lease, I have money saved. She just moved out a week ago. But the brother doesn't want to leave. But he isn't staying at my house. He is out in the street. They want to blame me for it.

To move out or not to move out?

Many people are told to save money and power by using flourescent lights and yet the Capital building in Sacramento,CA. won't change their lighting to flourescent. What's up with that? I believe that gigantic companies may make a difference by turning off power. But I am in a small three bedroom house. Hardly will make a difference. I see these gigantic companies, Casinos, etc. with their lights on around the clock. It would be great if they participated more often.

What is a modern day parable?

Q. For Biblical Literature class I need to write t a short play like 1-2 minutes long, revolving around a parable that is form modern times any ideas. I know what a parable is its just I�m blank for ideas.

A. Back in 1995, a young man, we'll call him Jed, after losing his job as a household goods mover, found himself wandering around the Sacramento delta. He'd been living in a van for the past few years and had decided to upgrade to a boat. He happened upon a suitable candidate in a 64 foot scow type barge with a 46 foot long x 12 ft wide mobile home trailer sitting on the main deck. He purchased the vessel for $10,000. invested about $300. in paint, a new toilet, some mini blinds,and some linoleum for the bathroom. He furnished the vessel with donated furniture from his many moving jobs. His home improvement project took about ten days to finish, and when he was done he smoked a fat doobie and came to the conclusion that this was no ordinary boat but rather a beautifully restored yacht. He advertised his 'yacht' in the Bay Area Classifieds because his ad would cost only $25.00 for the whole year. The ad read, "Massive 64 ft. barge. Twin screw, rebuuilt diesel engines, two bedrooms one bath, large patio deck. $80,000.00 with $40,000.00 down, $1,000.00 a month. Located in Sac. delta. Free mooring included." It was tied up to a tree so technically it was free. Within a week prospective buyers began inspecting his barge and listening to his drug induced sales pitch. Many of the buyers also had great plans for the barge, which our would be salesman incorporated into his spiel. Finally after about three months a serious buyer presented himself with an offer of $60,000.00 with $30,000.00 down and $1,000.00 a month. By this time however our salesman had polished his sales pitch to such perfection that he had come to believe the 'yacht' was actually worth $80 grand, and told his only chance at financial independence, "Let me think about it.". The buyers phone number was lost shortly thereafter. True story.
Here's another. One day a man was busy outside his home looking for his lost keys. A passerby offered to help in the search and after about an hour asked,"Where did you lose your keys?". The man replied, "In my house.". The passerby then asked,"If you lost your keys inside, then why are you looking for them outside?". The keyless man replied, "Because the light is better out here.". Some people might find this to be a silly parable but chances of finding a set of keys in the dark aren't much better.

Wanting to move to California...needing some guidance.?

Q. i am wanting to move to California, but not quite sure where. I've looked at a few places like Santa Cruz, LA, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and Eureka. From what I've found SC isn't quite what it use to be, that college kids have kind of taken over, LA has a bit of crime, and Eureka is a bit cold year round with lots of fog in the summer. But I've also heard SC has great surfing. LA is LA, along with great beaches, San Diego has great beaches as well. And San Francisco and Sacramento are great places with lots to do.

Basically what I am looking for is a city that has a lot to offer. I would prefer to be close to a beach, an hour away wouldn't be bad, closer would be awesome though. I would prefer a more safe area, i understand that you can't get away from crime. Money isn't that big of a deal, because I will be going with some close friends, there will be four of us, between the ages 20-25. Two are a couple so preferably a 3 bedroom place, not much more than $2,000 a month, would be nice. If its two bedroom and we have to share a room, then tough, we're in California.

Our reason for moving is basically where we live is drastically behind the times. There is no opportunity to make a decent living where we are. And there is nothing to do that isn't a couple of hours away. This area is very laid back, and everyone is raised to graduate high school, marry, have kids, and work at Wal-mart for the rest of your life. I do not want any part of that, I know there is so much more out there. I can no longer stay in Rowan County Kentucky.

A. You did your research very well. I would suggest the central coast, not warm like SoCal and not cold like NorCal but water varies in temperature. You can check out Ventura and Camarillo in Southern Cal, Shell and Pismo Beach, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo in central Calif. I am suggesting places that you can afford. For your age group I would recommend San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara for a small conservative college setting with the beach about 20 miles away. Santa Maria is a possibility and closer to a beach.Also Ventura, Port Hueneme are possibilities.

You have to go where there are jobs and that is usually in larger cities like San Diego, San Jose, Sacramento, Los Angeles. For $2000 a month you may get 2-bdrms in a suburb of San Francisco like Napa or Santa Rosa. San Francisco has a beach and you can live close by in Pacifica or Daly City and get to S.F. in 45 minutes.

There are jobs in northern Los Angeles county so Thousand Oaks and Agoura are possibilities but they are not near a beach. There are places near a beach but most of those are more expensive than you can afford. There are no jobs on the north coast. You will find more jobs in Orange or L.A. county because they have the biggest populations and most commerce.

Can i make ends meet in california?

Q. background info: i was raised in walnut creek, california. i am young, but will not mention my age because I am more mature than that. my heart aches for that place and i miss my loved ones out there who mean the world to me. i am a responsible person, many say i have a good head on my shoulders. i'm a very goal oriented person and a hardworker. and i say this with entire honesty. anyway, i want to make this happen. i have a lot of support from friends, but i'm not going to feed off of them. i need to stand on my own.

is it possible to make ends meet out there? i'm putting off school for a year (to wait for in-state tuition to come in affect) and for my life to be more stable to get the grades that i must work hard for, along with more money that needs to be saved up. anyway, i will be working full-time waitressing (finding a nice restaurant because expensive food=more tips). and i do have past experience in this.

next, i have a faithful friend moving with me and we will be working together to help each other with everything. we will have to pay for the roof over our head (a 1-2 bedroom apartment), the utilities, food, gas, POSSIBLY car insurance--sharing a car, and whatever other expenses. all of this will be split. is it feasible? yes everyone, i know it will be tough as hell to accomplish and work at this... but anything is possible if you set your heart to it. &the economy sucks, yes. but i don't have a family and i don't have much to pay for... and i will be working my way back to school to be a nurse practitioner (getting my masters in nursing). it's not too far out of my reach, it's just a matter of stepping out of my boundaries of comfort and security.

A. Yes, it is possible. But i'm telling you right now it's HARD even with two people. I grew up there. Sacramento, California. I love it, but as a 22 year old I couldn't do it on my own. I now live in Virginia. Cost of living is down here. In California the pricing on apartments huh..it's Crazy. You can check it out yourself online just go to FOR RENT.com and look up the area you want to be in. Also, with the economy the way it is...it wouldn't be a wise choice. Think about it long and hard then play your cards. But when the day comes to move out there...take advantage of the beautiful state ;]
