Bedroom design ideas for all you creative minds?

luna

I'm looking to decorate my room in a couple of weeks and I really want it to be some place special and cozy where I can escape to as opposed to just another room. I have a lot of trinkets I've collected from around the world, predominately India, Thai Land and China though. I want it to look very worldly and festive yet tropical. What accessories or furniture can you recommend for my room? I have a simple white bed and bureau. The only object I really want to work around is a gorgeous beaded purple bedspread from northern India and I can't decide which color to paint my room. I'm really torn between a turquoise blue because it's calming and reminds me of the ocean or a mango shade of yellow/orange because it's bright and warm. Which do you think? Or feel free to recommend another color.

Really anything you can think of would be great, thanks and Happy New Years!

Answer
If you were designing a room to match your personalize, I envision it as an inviting zen sanctuary that is the aesthetic equivalent of yoga: simultaneously calming and energizing. I think your vision for the room being a reflection of your travels is awesome. I am also going to be working on a decorating project this month as we finish moving things into my mom's new house, and I am inspired by your color palette! I wouldn't paint your walls mango, though, because it's such a stimulating color I don't think it's well suited for a bedroom. Depending on how your closet is set up, you could replace the door with a drape of beads or a pretty curtain you could tie back, and paint the inside of the closet mango so you have a peak of it shining through, like the way a striking color that lines a jacket or handbag can capture your attention. Accent pillows, window treatments, decorative pieces like candles, and furniture could be used to incorporate the other colors you love.

I love the colors in the photo "Laugh" posted, and think they would be gorgeous on your walls. You could paint the room in horizontal stripes of deep sea blue, soft aqua and a purple that matches your bedspread, and go over the lines with a smushing effect with your brush so they blend together less rigidly. Alternatively, you could paint the room monochromatically and then add swatches of tulle fabric in mango, turquoise, a deep red, and other colors reminiscent of the East. Most fabric stores sell them fairly inexpensively, and you could find a bamboo rod to hang them from to make it more visually appealing. Loop decorative curtain rings that have clips on them through the rod to hold up the fabric. Another idea would be to hang a tapestry on the fall that compliments the bedspread.

If you have enough space in your room for a small sofa, futon or chair you could throw a sari over it or find a stunningly colorful decorative pillows to nestle on it. A low-lying sofa or even thick cushions and pillows on the floor would be ideal for capturing the spirit of an Eastern room.

For furniture I would look for things in dark rattan and teak. Filling clear vases with eclectic things you've gathered from your travels can be an appealing personal touch. I have one filled with stamps from around the world, and another with shells I collected from beaches we visited. Beads and marbles also are simple yet visually dynamic. You could add a canopy to your bed, or hang fabric from the ceiling. Cluster a few ceiling hooks in the center of the room and tie large pieces of fabric, saris, or sheer curtains to each one then fan them out across the ceiling. Secure the ends of the fabric to the ceiling near the walls. Find a simple circular piece of fabric to tie with a ribbon over the hooks so they aren't visible.

Window treatments like curtains, drapes, or valances, and rugs are other ways to incorporate color. I think an orchid would be a lovely touch. When I think of a room in Thailand an image of the gorgeous orchid next to a simple white candle on top of a teak table is what first comes to mind.

You could make a photo collage by suspending a bamboo rod or something similar from wall hooks (paint them the same color as your walls so they blend in) and tying colorful ribbons to them with clip rings on the bottom holding up your pictures or postcards.

I hope you have an awesome time decorating your room so that it will be a warm and peaceful retreat for you.

~ Peace : )

i need help with a feminine nautical decoration idea for a bedroom.
any suggestions?

Answer
I would stay away from the really heavy nautical stuff like bouys and life preservers.

Paint the walls a soft blue like Behr Blue Opal http://www.behr.com/dsm-ext/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2e39ea6621ca5110VgnVCM1000008119fea9RCRD&vgnextfmt=default#channel=INSPIRATION;vgnextoid=a6a18d63dc9f6110VgnVCM1000006b0910acRCRD;view=3

Frame some retro nautical artwork in white frames:

These two go particularly well together:

Consider getting some seersucker bedding:

A silver latern could make a sweet bedside lamp:

I would also get some seashells on your next trip to the beach.

I am moving to Singapore with a salary of 4000 SGD. Is that enough for a studio apartment ,meals and transport?

Matt

Moving to Singapore in June from India.Total salary is 4000 SGD per month. I want to rent a studio apartment so that I have access to kitchen.Which area can i find one and How much does it cost along with food and transport and maybe once ina week going to movies or out for a drink .

Answer
Dear Matt,

Welcome to Singapore. Yes, sure one can live decently in Singapore for SGD4000 or less.

You can rent a 3-Room (2 Bedroom + 1 Living Hall size approx 600-700sq ft) Housing Development Board (HDB) Flat for about 30-35% of your monthly income. You may go to the following website for a rough idea on location and cost of rent... http://www.hdb.gov.sg/fi10/fi10323p.nsf/w/RentOpenMktStatisticRent?OpenDocument

Please be wary of con-Landlord as the whole HDB flat are NOT suppose to be rented out unless the owner has approval from HDB. Get a licenced property agent to help you on this but there will be a agency fees of "half month rental" per 1-year of lease. Usually flat comes fully furnished with Sofa, CTV, dining set, bedding set, wardrobe, kitchen cabinet, fridge and washing machine.

Rental cover Maintenance Fees & Property Tax. But you got to pay your own utilities bills should you rent the whole unit instead of just a room. Usually renting a room would not allow you access to the kitchen. Electrical & Water Bill usually cost SGD100-150 per month depend if your unit comes with air-conditioner and also depend on your usage. TV licence cost SGD110 per year. Cable TV, Broadband & Mobile are also very affordable, depend on your preference, cost about SGD130-200 per month.

Eating out is also very cheap in Singapore. A decent meal cost no more than SGD5.00 include soft drink in a Coffeeshop or Hawker Center which are all over Singapore. You may check out the following website for grocery shopping...
http://www.fairprice.com.sg

A drink (beer) at a coffeeshop or hawker center cost no more than SGD7 but can cost twice or more at a pub. Movie cost about SGD7-8. Check out the following website for eating out in Singapore...
http://www.hungrygowhere.com/

Public Transport are cheap and efficient. Depend on your place of work and where you live, usually cost no more than SGD2 per trip. A short journey cost less than SGD0.70! Get a EZ-Link Card after you arrive and it will save more.

Fyi, you may also consider visiting our National Library where you can borrow books, CD, VCD, DVD for free. Hope you have a wonderful stay in Singapore.

Where can I find best bedroom decorations?

Gorgeous C

I have been to do it yourself.com and about.com that they haven't catered to what I want to do with my bedroom. I need to be inspired by the pictures which i will decorate my room. website and links are helpful but I want them to give a lot of pictures to choose from

Answer
Depends on what you like or what your interests are. The number one thing that I believe is to shop around!

Pick a style you like. For example, my room is Indian style. I found a comforter set at JcPenny's, then shopped around for reasonable decorative pillows. I found them at Pier1. Then for pictures I just looked up some pictures on Google with the word "India" and came up with some more good ideas along with pictures that I could enlarge and get printed and hang on a wall for decoration. I also found a few book ends with their gods on them and some other cute decorations at Romancing the Stone.

My personal opinion is just to find a style that you like, and stick with it. Possibly look in Better Homes & Gardens or any home decor magazine at Low's maybe... Also watch alot of those channels on tv where they makeover rooms. Can't think of the name of them offhand, but I'm sure if you look around you can find them. They are usually on the same channels as the DIY stuff. They provide ALOT of ideas, and inspire you to come up with your own.

Good luck!

Cooking Spicy Indian food and problem with odour?

Q. My wife and I cook Indian food because we are from India. Thats not the problem. The real problem is we are up here in the midwest where it gets really cold in the winter and air doesnt get arround that much. As a result the entire house smells horrible and when ever I go out I end up smelling like a fu&8o99ing dumpster. Can anybody help us how to rid of this this problem ? How to keep our house smelling clean and at the same time continue cooking spicy fciiuouoing Indian food.

A. I cook quite a bit of seafood, and some dishes definitely taste better than the odor left over would indicate. The only Indian dishes I cook from scratch are various curries and yes, the smell does linger. Here are some things you can do.

1. EXHAUST FAN: Run the exhaust fan on your range the entire time that you are cooking and for at least 30 minutes after the food is done.
.
2. OSCILLATING FAN: Purchase an oscillating fan to get the stagnant air moving around.

3. AIR PURIFIER: Set up an air purifier near wherever your clothes are stored.

4. DOORS: Batten down the hatches. When I'm cooking, I close all doors leading to the bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry room, closets, etc.

5. GARBAGE DISPOSAL: Use it for everything that will go down without damaging it. I even pour oil followed by a good dose of boiling water so it doesn't clog the pipes. Save anything pleasantly fragrant like apple cores, citrus rinds, coffee grounds, or tea leaves, and send down the garbage disposal after you've done your final kitchen cleaning for the day.

6. BOIL: I simmer cinnamon sticks, lemons or limes, and even lavender Fabuloso once in a pot of water on the stove to kill especially strong odors.

7. OUST: Of all the spray deodorizers I have tried, Oust is the best at neutralizing air born odors. If you have gotten rid of the source of the odor, then Oust will pretty much knock it out. Febreeze is good for fabrics but the aerosol does not almost compare with Oust.

8. SEAL: If a pot has a lid, put it on. If a pan doesn't have a lid, put foil paper over it. If a dish can go into a plastic container, put it in and seal the lid. If something smelly is going to sit in the trash can overnight, put it in a ziploc bag or empty bread bag before dropping it in. If you open the lid to your trash can and any odor greats you, tie the top and take it out even if it is only 1/3 full and cold outside.

9. VINEGAR: It's a natural deodorizer. I keep some in a spray bottle and spritz the walls with it from time to time, especially if I have fried something in oil. It smells pretty foul when it first goes on but odors dissipate as it evaporates

10. BAKING SODA: Keep a box in the fridge and the freezer. Change it once a month. Sprinkle some at the bottom of the trash can.

My wife says she doesn't love me anymore and wants a divorce. How to deal?
Q. I'm in my early 40's. Been married 14 years and have 2 kids under 11. We moved to a different state for her work. My wife declared that she wanted a divorce over a year ago. She really didn't give couples therapy much of a chance. We have both.been in individual therapy all year. I've tried desperately to try to save this marriage all year long and my wife isn't responding to my attempts or meeting me half way. I don't know how to deal with the divorce. I don't have family anywhere near here. My good friends are 500 miles a way or more. My daughter already has special needs and I'm afraid of what the divorce will do to her further. I know that I'm supposed to.be doing things to rebuild myself...and I am. I lost 43 pounds, I'm taking RCIA classes at my church, I'm more involved in my son's cub scouts and I've learned a ton about relationships this year. I just dread starting.over in the dating pool again at 43. I fear marriage right now. I'm used to.having somebody to hang out with.and.plan our future together. Together, my.wife and I.had very good salaries. With just one salary, I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to.pursue.life goals like saving for college for the kids or retirement. I'm overwhelmed. My wife is upstairs, but won't let me sleep in the same bed. I have a strong need to reconnect with her. The other day we did lay in bed together and just cuddled and it felt so good and emotionally satisfying because we hadnt done that in ages. People at work are being supportive, but the quality of my.work.has slipped and I'm having a hard time focussing. Any suggestions on how to deal with all of this?

We had a rough four years after we moved. My daughter was diagnosed with adhd and it took awhile before they were able to get it under control with medicine. My wife was unemployed for 8 months. I had to work with India at night and do my.regular job during the day. I became sleep deprived and grumpy. We didn't ha

A. Welcome to our imperfect world, where life deals you "lemons" and it's your job to make lemonade out of them! Seriously guy, welcome to the world of all us who have loved, married, had children, jobs, been transferred, had special issues with our children, been unemployed...You are, NOT ALONE.

Faith is an important facet of survival in this life, as is love. I am a widow now and I completely understand your fear about dating - for it's a very different world out there. But please don't cling to something that isn't there any longer with your wife - have the hard discussion of how to move forward and what she would like and what is the least impact to the children, etc. Continue with the church and therapy, improving yourself really. It SOUNDS like you "pushed" a lot of her "buttons" for years and weren't very involved, in tune, in sync and it finally came to a grinding half - she gave up. I do not know this for fact, as I say? It just sounds like it. She feels she can't move forward in life with you as a partner. Painful perhaps but true. That does NOT mean you can't continue to be a father to your child and co-parent. BTW? Special needs kids, if ADHD is all that you're dealing with? Can be helped to grow and learn about HOW to cope in their life with their schoolwork and with the help of setting routine in regard to homework and cleaning their bedrooms, etc. Beats autism!

You need to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and carry on my man, for that is what we parents MUST do when things fall apart. Further? You and your wife need to follow through with the divorce and simultaneously have discussions about how you're going to go parent and where you'll live (not far away I hope) and all the particulars. You must accept this, life isn't perfect and no one promised you a "rose garden" and we all pay for our "sins" of the present and past, one way or another. Stop fighting WHAT IS and DEAL WITH IT, or you will be of no use to the children that need you...In another year or two, as you step out and away from this situation? You will have renewed yourself in OTHER ways that MATTER to your well being...But you must be proactive, no one is going to do it for you.

This is what being an adult, if very often these days, all about...Carrying on in the face of the adversity that has come our way. I had several serious life crisises in my marriage that seemed like the world was truly coming to an end...But I also had faith; kept my positive outlook that it would work out...and invariably, inevitably it did...Oh not the way I planned or wanted...But it all did work out.

-And so it will with you IF, you continue with helping yourself and start the conversation about the future and do it NOW.
