Hi, I'm trying to find out what some of the best brands of furniture are. Would you say Ethan Allen, Broyhill, and Pottery Barn? Or would you recommend something else. I'm looking into getting a new bedroom set and I want to know what the top brands are (as far as name recognition, brand appeal, quality, etc.). I'd appreciate any helpful responses you can give me. Thanks a bunch.

I worked for Ethan Allen, about 4 years ago.....They have always had the best furniture.....For generations, all of their furniture was made in the USA, until recently, most of it is still made in US, some however is being imported from China.....I still think EA is the best and its an investment, just make sure you will love this furniture, because you will have to live with it for a while....Best of luck....

I have a nice Ethan Allen bedroom set from the 1970s that it is in excellent condition (structurally), but the finish on the furniture is scuffed up, dull, and just way too dark for my taste. What is the easiest process for sanding this down to a natural finish?

I use Strypeeze to remove majority of finish. It removes every kind of finish I ever used it own. Then I sand the small spots it didn't quite get. Most manufactured furniture uses very thin veneer wood on top of secondary wood so a sanding mistake can severely damage a piece of furniture. I use a random orbit sander and fine grain paper. Takes most of the work out of it too.

I have an old Ethan Allen table I want to sand and re varnish. What number sand paper(s) are recommended?

Consider varnish remover rather than just sanding. If you sandpaper you are removing wood-- or part of the furniture -- which you don't want to do. You just want to finish off. You can find these kinds of products at home centers and they work great. You apply them with steel wool. It is very messy -- so you need gloves and tarps, but my wife and I refinished antique bedroom set from her grandparents and it came out amazing. Worked so well I did this on a desk and aquarium stand. Below is a link to the kind of product I mean.

Does anyone now a charity in West Palm, Florida that will pick up furniture that is slghtly damaged?

It seems crazy, but I have a bedroom set, two nightstands, a mirrir and a dresser that I am trying to give away. The problem is the dresser has a little damage on the bottom that can easily be fixed by purchasing 4 shoe boxes from Home Depot to level it out...otherwise, everythingis in perfect condition. It seems impossible to get a charity to pick up the set because they all want to sell it and want it to be in PERFECT condition....hell if I had no money, I would take it in a heartbeat!!!! Are there any legit charities in the West Palm Area that will pick this set up? Salvation Army is suprisingly enough, not one of those!
Let me clarify this one..it is not crap because only one dresser is damaged and I lived with it for over a year and it was fine...and it is not even bad damage. I know about the shoe boxes because I did it myself. I just don't want to move it because I am relocating out of state. I need some helpful answers. Thanks.

LOL, I used to live in WPB and the people there are pretty snobby and rich. I'm not surprized no one wants your damaged furniture, no matter how slight.

I remember shopping at some second hand stores run by those rich charity groups, the Junior Womens League, etc. and some of their stuff was as expensive as Ethan Allen.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't want a dresser, even if it was free, that I had to buy boxes for to level it out, LOL.

I like the idea of doing a mismatched but matched set, but have no idea where to start? I know I definitely like that bed, though! I like stores like Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn but I'm open to anything! Thanks for your help!

I would say espresso finished wood or a dark wood like cherry would go well with it. If you want a bit more contrast, then go for a lighter wood.

Not sure what you mean by a mismatched set . . . . Different color pieces or different styled pieces in the same color? If you want mismatched styles in the same finish, check out your local thrift stores, furniture resale shops, yard sales and estate sales as you can often pick up the pieces you need relatively inexpensively. This is a good option especially if you do not need all of the pieces available in a bedroom furniture suite. The only thing is, you may have to do some additional work (sanding, stripping & staining) if the pieces you collect are not all the same color.

If you are wanting new, then look to IKEA. Hemnes, Brimnes and Brusali series have pieces available in a black-brown finish.

All of the stores and online sources that I contacted didn't know where I could do this (bedroom sets don't usually come with matching desks and chairs). Any suggestions?

The Original Owner painted the Set twice. The Head and Footboard have damage on the wicker. I wanted to strip the paint but do not want to hurt the Furniture.
Fullsize Bed,Chiffon Robe,Desk (Marble Top) and matching Mirror.

Very good brand name Ad say the bed is worth 500.the armoire is maybe 1000 night table are worth maybe 300 and the mirror 200 hope that help you good luck.

A. it sounds like you want to dropship furniture from an overseas manufacturer without having to warehouse anything. That is going to be difficult since most "reputable" overseas companies are going to have minimum orders (container sizes) since the cost involved in shipping one piece of furniture or even a bedroom set would be cost prohibited.

My question is why do you need an overseas operation to begin with? There are plenty of US companies that offer distributors discounts and will dropship product. All of the major furniture makers (ethan allen, broyhill, etc.) have closed up their US plants and are making the furniture overseas as it is. There are still some US companies that would welcome new distributers. Check out the furniture market in Highpoint NC for a listing of manufacturers.

If you insist on going oversees check out these websites: www.alibaba.com; www.fuzing.com or www.ttnet.net They list various companies with thousands of products for import.

As far as a secured online payment, if you are a startup I suggest using Paypal's shopping cart feature. THat way you don't actually need a merchant account and can accept virtually any kind of payment. It is a little involved to download to your website but doable.

If you are dropshipping you will always run the risk of your supplier back ordering a product at which point you need to stay ontop of your customer service and either issue a refund or keep them informed. It has definitely caused problems for some people selling on ebay! You really need to be confident in your supplier and his supplies before listing a product for sale.

Q. The problem is that we have lived together for over 4 years, so to register for toaster, mixers, coffee maker, etc. is silly because we already have them, and the like. What we would like is things that aren't realastic for a registry...bedroom set, livingroom furniture. If we were to put that in the registy for Ethan Allen, or similar, we would be locked into that store, when it is possible that another store could have something better and/or cheaper. China is not an option at this time, we live in a small apartment with no room or use for china. What do we do? It is suggested to register the honeymoon, I feel that is the same thing as registering for cash, which is tacky and tasteless. Please help us out.

A. personally I wouldnt register for anything. the purpose of registering for gifts is so people can get you things to help start you out. in your case...there is nothing you need. and to put stuff like a bedroom set and living room stuff would be tacky as you know nobody will buy you those things...they are just too espensive and will make you look greedy and tacky. and your right...a honeymoon or cash registry looks very tacky. I would just not ask for anything and if people ask what you want tell them there is nothing you need. and friends and family can tell people by word of mouth that there isnt really anything you need accept new furnature that your saving up to buy. they arent stupid...they will get the point its money you need and if they choose to give a gift then they will give money. there was nothing my hubby and I needed when we married and we didnt even want gifts either. some people didnt give any gift, some gave money and some people surprised us and bought gifts that we actually could use that never occured to us to ask for (a set of matching dishes, stainless steel pots and pans, a new vaccuum)
