Should my wife and I live in Denver or Los Angeles?

Here's our situation, any advice or insight would be very helpful. We are both 27 and have lived in LA for 9 years (both in college for 4 years and now 5 years out of school). Her family is from Denver, mine is from here. We are living in a modest 3 bedroom one bath, 1250 SF house. We have good jobs and can afford to live here, but considering how much we make, we feel like we should be living in a bigger place with room to grow and start a family.

We love that everything is here in LA, sports, shopping, entertainment, etc. We also know that Denver has that, but at a much more affordable level. We're torn because it is scary to leave everything we know here, even though it seems like Denver would have most, if not all, of that there too.

So here we are... torn. Help us out! Why is LA great, why is Denver great... what are we missing? Thank you for your honestly and help!

L.A. is an exciting city for singles (if you don't mind the heavy smog), but for raising children? I would think about that one.

After a child arrives, the whole world changes! You will want more space (trust me!) and a big, grassy, backyard (for that swing set). You'll mingle with young marrieds w/children around the cul-de-sac, have a dog, ride your bikes, grill out, play bridge, do progressive dinner parties....welcome to the suburbs!!!

Also, you might look at the whole thing as an 'adventure'...try it for a couple of years! Rent, look around, get a feel for what it's like to live in the suburbs of Denver. You could even get that dog... (great preparation for a baby!). If you hate it, you'll have learned something about yourselves.

I am in L.A. quite a bit on business. The air stifles me...but that's me. Good luck!

Tim Allen, whose real name is Time Allen Dick, was born in Denver, but moved to Birmingham after his father as killed by a drunk driver circa 1965. Tim graduated from Seaholm High School in Birmingham, circa 1972, before he went to attend Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

While at Western Tim fell into the company of some characters that led him astray. Time was arrested and convicted for cocaine trafficing. He served a little over two years in federal prison, before a judge decided to take a risk and paroled him. He was "lucky" to have committed his offense before Federal sentencing guidelines restricted judges discretion.

Tim moved to Royal Oak where he started his stand-up career as well as being a tv commercial actor. Tim did work for KMart, Jeep, Detroit Edison, a local pizza chain and a number of car dealerships.

In 1989 or so he was featured on his own Showtime special called "Men Are Pigs", I think. It was shot at the State Theater in downtown Kalamazoo. The important point is that the "Home Improvement" series as based on the personality he created for the Showtime Special.

In real life, Tim lived on Eastlady Drive in Beverly Hills, Michigan. His house was one house off of 14 Mile on the west side of the street. He sold the home about 1998-99

In the show, the exact city is never identified, but several times he does mention "Keego Harbor Heights" which doesn't really exist, although there is a little town called Keego Harbor.

The village of Beverly Hills, sits just south of Birmingham and is indeed a pleasant little bedroom community. Birmingham and it's neighbor to the north are exceedingly wealthy, cozy and prosperous.

My family is moving into a new house and I am going to be living in the basement. Most of the basement is finished and thats where my siblings' playroom will be. On the other side is an unfinished part behind a door. My dad is building me a room in half of the unfinished part. The other half will be a storage room. I also need a closet with actual doors, not just shelves hung up on the wall. I need ideas on how to do this cleverly. THANKS xx

If you ever watch the disney channel show "good luck charlie" the main character's room is actually very similar to your situation. Her room is in the basement, with the playroom on the other side and is separated by rolling barn doors. Check out that tv show for some ideas maybe.

How safe it is to travel in a RV with young children?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Estes Park CO. We will fly to Denver first and then He would like to rent a RV and camp the first day in a semi-primitive campground, and then want us to travel to other areas of CO. We have 2 young children, 1 and 3 year old, and I am not so sure I want to do the RV. Safety and space are a concern to me. I feel that the children are too young, plus I read that not so many RV parks welcome children.

My husband is very insistent on the RV trip, he feels this would be a great adventure, but I just don't want to try a new adventure with very young children. If the children were older, I would be more at ease and I would say let's do it!

Also, once we arrive at Denver, we need to head to Walmart and purchase bed sheets, pots and pans, silverware, pillows, food, etc. I just don't feel like going through that hassle. I think that a Cabin will work better for us. Let me know what how was your experience traveling with young children in a RV,

I'm going to assume by RV you're talking about a motor-home. With children the ages of yours it's a very bad idea. The kids have to be belted in the entire time they are in the RV..how does he pan to do that for hours on end?
I suggest you fly where ever you plan to go, rent a CAR and make reservations at RV parks along the way. You can rent a travel trailer big enough to sleep all of you plus give the kids a place to run around in. They are set up on permanent sites with bedrooms bathrooms, kitchen, Living room TV etc. And lets not forget it doesn't have to be sunny everyday, does he really want to be in an RV where these kids have no place to go and nothing to do?
And contrary to what you think all kids are welcome in RV parks..they usually have playgrounds and activities for kids planned almost everyday.
His idea is great for only a couple, or traveling with older kids..but at their ages..no no.

Plan where you want to go get out a map or go on line and check out RV parks with trailer rentals..you will ALL have a better time.

Is Denver a good city to start in?

My friend and i are planning on moving to Denver later this year. This will be my first time ever leaving my parents house and getting my own place. My friend is really set on moving to denver, because it's so close to here family. But me, I'm not too excited to be moving there. I'm only going so i'll have a room mate. I really want to move to Portland. I've been to portland a few times and i really like the vibe there. I don't want to waste money on car payments and i know portland has fairly good public transportation. I just don't think i would be able to live on my own for the first time if i did decide to move to portland. If anyone has moved to portland and lives in portland, what's it like? I want to be close to downtown so i can walk to most places. And i've found a few apts that i like, but i heard the affordable housing ones have a wait list. Anyone ever have to go through that? How long does it take to get one of those apts? Also, how is it meeting new people there? If i do decide to go, I'll obviously not know anyone. Any other info about portland will be appreciated! Thanks!

Based on what you're looking for I'd actually recommend moving to Boulder, CO. It's a midsize city located about 25 miles northwest of Denver, so your roommate should still be reasonably close to her family and it's not too far of a drive to get to things like sporting events, concerts, amusement parks and the things you only find in a big city.

Boulder is home to a major university, so it's going to be a great place to meet people around your age. Also, because of the large young population it is a very lively town. The vibe there is great, too. Whether you're into bars, local cafe's and coffee shops, art galleries, independent music and record stores etc. you'll find it.

It isn't really necessary to own a car there either. It is a very liberal, environmentalist city, and with that comes a HUGE emphasis on public transport and cycling/walking. There's extensive bus lines and hundreds of miles of bike paths. As long as you have a bike and a bus pass you can get around Boulder without a problem. You can catch a bus to Denver, and and there is a plan to connect the cities by commuter train into Denver's Light Rail system.

There is an affordable housing program, but I don't think the rental prices are too bad anyway. A 2 bedroom apartment costs around $1000 a month, which is just above the national average of $928.

In different studies Boulder has been ranked the #1 city to live in America, the skinniest city in America, the #1 happiest city, #1 for health and well being, the 8th best city for artists, the #1 city for foodies, America's 'brainiest' city, and the #4 most bicycle friendly city in the world, among others.

Not being a major city, it's easy to overlook, but from what both of you want it sounds like Boulder might be a very good fit. I'd certainly research it a bit, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to travel there before moving just to see what it's like.

Have you been to Denver? I must say that I like living here, although I'd probably like to move to Boulder to settle down. I think either city is a very good place to live. Of the American cities I've been to, in my opinion the top 5 to live in (in no particular order) would be Boulder, Denver, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland. .

San Antonio is a very affordable city. The rents are considerably cheaper than major cities anywhere else in the US. You asked about renting, though in San Antonio, renting is really very similar in cost for a 3 bedroom house to buying. The housing cost in the Texas area are quite reasonable, but the property taxes are higher than many states. This is, however, offset by Texas having no personal income tax.

San Antonio is one of America's fastest growing cities. The city was the 11th largest in the US in 1995, 9th largest in 2000 and was 7th largest in 2006 now having grown larger than Dallas as the second largest city in Texas. This rapid growth does have some affect on both traffic and crime. Certain areas of the city have traffic issues at high traffic periods, though this is common in any major city, and certainly no worse in San Antonio. The crime rate for the overall city is higher than the Texas and National average, but that is also common in any major city. However, there are many areas of the city where the crime rates are at or below the state and national average. Additionally, in some areas, if a careful examination of the crime statistics by the San Antonio Police Department is made, you will find the crime is mostly limited to shopliftting and crimes against business and property, in those areas personal crime (ie. rape or murder) is minimal.

Good sources of information about an area of town are:

As far as weather, if you don't like the weather in San Antonio, wait a few minutes...

Actually, in general, the weather in the area is usually very temperate. The average low in January is 39, the high usually being in the 60s, the average high in July is 94-95 with lows in the 70s. The Spring and Fall months are usually days in the 80s and nights in the 60s. This is why we have Sea World, and other tourism sites in the metropolitan area. There have been very few tornados in the city in the history of San Antonio, due to it's geographical setting. The city is far enough from the coast to avoid the worst effects of hurricanes but you can be on the beach in 2 1/2 hours. The rainfall amounts vary significantly by year and season. Last spring and this past summer was an exceedin ly wet year, and a few years ago we had water rationing. When we do get rain, however, it will frequently cause, flooding of the low areas. This does not normally affect any housing in the city, but is more significantly an affect on driving, as many roads run through low water crossings. If you do decide to move to the area (which I highly encourage you to do) never drive through water standing or running across a road (many lives have been lost in this area that way). Some people will complain that the area is hot. It is significantly cooler than most of the southern US, and only an average of 7 degrees hotter in the summer than Denver. Most of this past summer we were cooler everyday than New York.

As far as entertainment, there are numerous plays and concerts touring and local in the city. There are many clubs and just north of the city in the Hill Country you will find some intersting Dance Halls where many country-western music greats got their starts (like Willie Nelson and George Strait)
The city has a multitude of great restaurants, and world class shopping available. In the hill country you will find lakes and rivers which provide availability for boating, skiing, rafting, canoeing, and tubing. Also the area is home to one of the US' finest wine regions.

The best part about San Antonio, in many peoples opinion, is that while growing into a major city, it has retained a lot of small town charm, and has a unique identity. The special fiesta flavor provided by the Tex-Mex blend of the cty makes the area a special place to live or visit. As the city is growing rapidly, there are a lot of employment opportunities in several segments. The South Texas Medical Center, USAA, the San Antonio Military Complex, the tourism industries, many tech and banking companies, significant real estate development and construction, and Toyota are all major employers.

Do I have to worry about ants any more?

Well, I live in Denver Colorado area, and for the past year i've been dealing with ants in my bedroom for the past year. I used to always use a TON of hot shot kitchen bug killer, but I don't think the issues over yet. I normally have 6 ants per day in the summer and now its limited to 2 or 3 a mouth. These ants are red and black medium sized red upper black butt. I think I just killed their queen today which had a very large butt and wings with pitchers. After this I made some remedy which was made of stain remover, yeast, rice vinegar, sugar, and syrup. My question is do you think that remedy will work and do you think the colony will die because of the one queen I killed and threw away somewhere a block away so they couldn't smell it? By the way my parents don't know about this so I got rid of my fish tanks because ants like humidity. IM only 14 and I NEED help!!!
PS I WANT THEM TO DIE AND BURN IN F U C K I N G HELL!!!!!!!!!!

The queen would not have been in your room, but never leaves the nest. That may have been a breeding male........they will get the wings at breeding season.......which is usually mid summer....so I am confused too. I assume you know the difference between ants and termites. Denver wasn't know for termites in my days there but I guess things can change.

Always better to use bait type pesticides that are taken back to the queen and fed to her. Most pesticides just kill the workers while they forage, they are easily and quickly replaced. Often better to treat outside around house perimeter with the bait stuff.....Amdro for example. Your homemade mixes may have no effect at all. One addition to your brews should be boric acid as found in Roach Pruf. Ants are sweet eaters or "meat" eaters. So mix boric acid in some peanutbutter for the "meat" and some jelly for the sweet. Put into a small jar with small holes in lid. Set where you think ants are coming in. They take the poison food back to the queen.

Ants should be tucked away for winter........if you are getting them during winter then you have an interior nest and problems.

The best part about San Antonio, in many peoples opinion, is that while growing into a major city, it has retained a lot of small town charm, and has a unique identity. The special fiesta flavor provided by the Tex-Mex blend of the cty makes the area a special place to live or visit. As the city is growing rapidly, there are a lot of employment opportunities in several segments. The South Texas Medical Center, USAA, the San Antonio Military Complex, the tourism industries, many tech and banking companies, significant real estate development and construction, and Toyota are all major employers.

Hope you decide to move to SATX.

(I will at this point make the obligatory comment about the 4 time NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs, which most of us in San Antonio love, are another reason to move to the city. This is comment is made inorder to comply with all SA responses to why should I move to SA questions).

Where in Detroit was Home Improvement set; and is it really as cosy and middle class as the series makes out?

A. Tim Allen, whose real name is Time Allen Dick, was born in Denver, but moved to Birmingham after his father as killed by a drunk driver circa 1965. Tim graduated from Seaholm High School in Birmingham, circa 1972, before he went to attend Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

While at Western Tim fell into the company of some characters that led him astray. Time was arrested and convicted for cocaine trafficing. He served a little over two years in federal prison, before a judge decided to take a risk and paroled him. He was "lucky" to have committed his offense before Federal sentencing guidelines restricted judges discretion.

Tim moved to Royal Oak where he started his stand-up career as well as being a tv commercial actor. Tim did work for KMart, Jeep, Detroit Edison, a local pizza chain and a number of car dealerships.

In 1989 or so he was featured on his own Showtime special called "Men Are Pigs", I think. It was shot at the State Theater in downtown Kalamazoo. The important point is that the "Home Improvement" series as based on the personality he created for the Showtime Special.

In real life, Tim lived on Eastlady Drive in Beverly Hills, Michigan. His house was one house off of 14 Mile on the west side of the street. He sold the home about 1998-99

In the show, the exact city is never identified, but several times he does mention "Keego Harbor Heights" which doesn't really exist, although there is a little town called Keego Harbor.

The village of Beverly Hills, sits just south of Birmingham and is indeed a pleasant little bedroom community. Birmingham and it's neighbor to the north are exceedingly wealthy, cozy and prosperous.
