new 42" TV 720P or 1080P?? Costco anyone?

schooly G

We would like to get a new 42" TV for our Master Bedroom spending around 1,000. The Magnavox 42 - 1080P LCD on sale at costco looks tempting. Has anyone purchased it? I was also looking at their Philips 42 1366 x 768 or the Panasonic 1024 x 768. any advice would be appreciated. Any other places with good deals on tv's? Should we go with the 1080P?

Thanks

Answer
Overall, if you are wondering about 1080p vs. 720p, you should be safe with either. Most people cannot see the difference between the 2, and a lot of HD broadcast is actually 720p anyways. Costs all the same, though, I advise going 1080p.

If you are looking for a 42 inch LCD, you cannot go wrong with the offer Best Buy has going on a Westinghouse 1080p 42 inch LCD. You can get it for $989. The biggest advantage it has over some of the others is that it has 4 HDMI ports, which is amazing.

If you find a great deal on a 720p set, go for that, but given your price range, you can find a perfectly good 1080p set that will be more "futureproof".

Bought an LG 50" Plasma, have a question for best setting to put XBOX on?

Modman

Hey guys, we got this LG plasma at CostCo the other day, only 800$, 720P. We bought it as a nice bedroom TV. I also have an XBOX360 in there, just wondering if there's anyone with the same or similiar set up, and know which setting to put the xbox in? Thanks

Answer
Well being you bought a 720p HDTV, I'd say use the 720p setting, so 1280 x 720. Then there's no conversion going on really. The 720p TV would be getting a 720p signal.

But at the end of the day its YOUR viewing experience. So you can mess around with a few of the options and see if any of them look better/worse to you. Even if you're not using what the "experts" feel is right, if it looks better to you that's what matters.

I'm buying a 37" HD TV but I only have basic non-HD cable. Is the picture quality going to be bad?

Answer
I just bought a 42" 1080P (full high definition) LCD television for my bedroom and I don't have a cable box hooked up to it yet. It is hooked directly up to the wall. The picture is "FUZZY!". On my HDTV in my living room I have an HD cable box supplied by the cable company hooked up to it. The premium channels such as HBO and Showtime all have one channel each where they broadcast it in standard as well as in high def. If you flip back and forth between the two the difference is highly noticeable. If you go into say "Costco" and look at their HDTV's there is a sign on every set that says "An HD picture requires an HD signal!" You will however get used to watching non-hd channels on your HDTV after time. Plus the U.S. government has made a statement that all cable must be digital by a specified date in the year 2009.

My apartment smells like fish. What do I do?

PBBandit

I bought some Cod at Costco last Thursday and cooked it in my one bedroom apartment. The smell was horrible and after 4 days it still smells! It is in all my clothing, bedding etc. I have opened windows, sprayed everything with Febreze, used air freshener, scented oils and lit candles...needless to say nothing has worked. I am embarressed to even get close to people for fear they will think I smell like fish. Any suggestions?

Answer
Vinegar as bad as it smells will take away the odor , just pour some in a bowl or two and sit it around ...\

Baking Soda its cheap and works at removing bad odors ,sprinkle it on your carpets , and open a few boxes of it a sit them around ..

You can try one of these or both .

My hubby cooks fish alot and i does make my house stink ,so when know he has cooked fish I set the baking soda out in a few places around the house , and I close the other doors .

What should I put on bedroom dresser?

I just bought a new bedroom set. The dresser looks bare; any suggestions? Also, what kind of lamp should I use for the night stand? Keep in mind it's a large, wide night stand. A tall skinny lamp or a fatter one?

Answer
No need to clutter your new dresser. I would just get some nice picture frames and put a family picture or two on the dresser. Balance the picture(s) with a tall candle holder, a vase of flowers or a plant. If your bedroom gets a lot of light, a Phalaenopsis orchid would look lovely. Look for one with healthy looking roots and leaves and quite a few buds. Water it thoroughly once a week, but don't get water on the leave (if you do, wipe it off especially any water that gets in the center) and the orchid should stay in bloom for at least 2 months. Trader Joes, Loews, Home Depot and Costco often carry orchids at very reasonable prices ($10-$15). Orchids last a lot longer than a bouquet of flowers.

If your nightstand is wide, I would suggest a lamp with a large round or oval base. Be sure to purchase the lamp from a store that has a cash refund policy, in case the lamp you purchase does not look good once you get home.

What are good furniture stores for bedroom sets?

I'm moving soon, & my plan is to get rid of everything in my bedroom & starting out clean. I am getting all new furniture for my bedroom, & I need ideas. Any websites to help? Nothing too expensive either. :c
Also, the only website I've actually checked out was Ikea & nothing really caught my eye. & If you know another website that has accessories for bedrooms (sheets, curtains, etc.) than suggest those one too. Thanks!

Answer
All these places sell bedroom suites, but you don't give any indication of your budget or what style you like at all, so can't help with the curtains, sheets etc, but hopefully you'll see something you like on these furniture sites..

Bought an LG 50" Plasma, have a question for best setting to put XBOX on?

A. Well being you bought a 720p HDTV, I'd say use the 720p setting, so 1280 x 720. Then there's no conversion going on really. The 720p TV would be getting a 720p signal.

Mommas: What kind of crib did you buy?
Q. I have about 400 to spend on a crib and changer. about 250 for JUST a crib. I've been looking at a lot of them on Babies R Us. I can't seem to find one that I like though! What kind of crib did YOU buy? If you could link me that would be great(: Thanks!!

A. Anyone will do. No drop side and no cut outs, at least two height settings. Mine had five but I only used the top and bottom one. When she could stand up, I put the mattress as low as it would go. Decide if you want convertible or not. We wanted one that would turn into a toddler bed but not a full size as I planned to get her a bedroom set when she was switched into a big girl bed. I figured she would be good in the crib/toddler bed for three years. Most full size conversions require you to buy rails separately which can be hard to find. So if you want the full size bed later you should buy rails now as you know they are available now. That will be more than $250 though
In my opinion you buy the cheapest crib that fulfils your needs. I bought the cheapest standard crib that became a toddler bed in the color I wanted. My changing table was also the cheapest in the color I wanted at bru . Mattress wise I opted for organic as I wanted my baby to breathe in as few chemicals as possible. She has a waterproof organic mattress cover that came with the mattress( I got from Costco) She spends 14 hours a day on it, generally face down, now that she can turn herself over. I think all the cribs at bru are non toxic ( jpma certified, was it)

Discount Furniture in Santa Clara? Does this even exist?
Q. I'm looking for a cheap furniture store in Santa Clara? Anyone have recommendations?

A. I've always had a great experience at Direct Factory Furniture in Santa Clara. They are right across from Costco. Even though their prices are low, they dont sacrifice service or quality. I bought my dining set and my bedroom set from them.

I highly recommend them if you are looking for a good deal. I think their new website is http://www.directfactoryfurniture.com

Vizio LCD owners I need help?
Q. what size LCD do you have and what are the pros and cons of these TVs. Also where did you buy it, it seems like the ones from Costco are worse than from elsewhere. SHOULD I BUY ONE?

A. Well I have had a 42" Vizio since last November and I'm more than happy with it. I was a bit leery at first about getting a cheaper model but my daughter and her family had theirs for almost a year with not a problem and a gorgeous picture. When I first got mine I was a little disappointed in the sharpness in the picture but found out the problem was with my cable. I also have a 32" Sony Bravia in my bedroom that was nearly the same price as the 42" Vizio. If I had the 2 sets side by side I don't think there would be any difference in picture quality. Oh I almost forgot to add that we both bought ours at Walmart for under $900. As You can probably tell I highly recommend the Vizio. Good luck.
