What kind of speakers can I buy for a small screen hdtv with digital audio output?

I just bought a 26" sharp lcd hdtv. The picture is fine, but the speakers are very disappointing. the tv does have a digital output audio. what kind of external speakers/woofers are compatible with this tv? what components will be needed? i reckon a conventional computer speaker wouldn't work.

In order to use the digital audio output, you'll need a Dolby receiver, which means you'll need a full-blown Home Theater kit. You can get these relatively cheaply these days, but you get what you pay for. If the TV is a small one for a bedroom, you might do better to take the ANALOG audio output and run that into a set of PC speakers with subwoofer.

They are coming to install it in a few days, but in about a month I am buying 2 new TVs , (One will be replacing an old one we have now, and the other will be in a bedroom that doesnt currently have a tv. How will I hook these up? Do I have to have verizon come out again?

Your new FIOS STB (set top box) will be connected like this:

It will not matter which type of box you have requested HD, Standard either with or without the DVR:

Coax from wall to STB
Output of STB will be one of many options depending on your TV Set. The tech will have all the connection cords required.
HDMI
Component (One set of cords)
A/V (two separate cords one for video one for audio)
Coax.

If you are going to have a DVD or VCR ask the tech to run the STB through the DVD/VCR then into the TV.

If you do not have a HD TV right now and that is what you are getting just ask the tech to leave you the cords and have him/her show you how to hook them up. I have done that for a number of customers.

If a tech has to come out again, there may be a service charge.

When I hook my hr10-250 up to my tv via hdmi it will no longer broadcast tv through any of the other outputs. What is the best way to get a signal to my non hdmi set in the bedroom?

If your sex life is unsatisfactory, then there are problems in your marriage. Problems in the bedroom are most often indicative of problems elsewhere in the relationship.

My advice: figure out how to reach your wife. You need to set the stage for a very serious conversation with your wife. You need to be sensitive. Ask open-ended questions, and LISTEN to what she is saying. My guess is that there is a reason or a number of reasons why she is not putting out. You need for her to tell you what those reasons are and how you can help rectify the situation. It may be that you're not romantic enough. It may be that she no longer feels sexy. It may be the she has lost interest in sex. It may be that she asked you to do something that was important to her that you did not do, and now she's resentful. You need to figure out what is wrong.

In the end, if you cannot establish a line of communication with your wife, one that leads to the two of you being better partners for each other, the sex is the least of your marriage's ills. If both parties are not able to communicate and solve problems, then you need to ask yourself if the marriage is worth maintaining.

How do I go about building an unconventional house?

Q. I live in Calgary Alberta and would like to build an unconventional house on an acerage far outside city limits. Exactly what would the process be ?Would I draw up my own drawings and have an engineer look at them and then how do I proceed?I've also heard that prefab homes get registered as products so ther is no inspections they just keep following the plans that was approved and inspect every so often.Your expertise would help me a bunch!

A. If you are looking for a design specific to your lifestyle and which addresses your particular surroundings, then you should consider hiring an architect.

The process would start with you considering what type of home you would feel comfortable living in - open floorplan, vaulted ceilings, one level, lots of sunlight, all wood - that kind of thing. Then consider what your program elements are - how many bedrooms, baths, garage bays . . . . What are comfortable sizes for the various rooms? Keep a scrapbook of magazine articles & images, note what you like about them, make notes about little things that pop into your head at 3AM, take photos of components you like (friend's faucet, neighbors pergola . . .). Think about what you would like to see from your lot as you sit for breakfast or where you like the sun to be first thing in the morning. You can make sketch plans or elevations if you like.

With these you will have something to discuss with your architect and get the creative juices flowing. To many the term "unconventional" means "weird", but it should mean unique, individual, surpassing ordinary convention. Once the ball gets rolling your architect will help you flesh out your program, will discuss with you various options specific to your site and will lead you through the development and fine-tuning of the design. Is it okay to use cheap speakers with a sound surround Receiver?

Q. I just got my mom a sound surround receiver for her birthday, and wasn't planning on getting any new speakers until xmas for her. But the guy at my future shop told me that if she where to use her cheap speakers that came with her dvd player, it would fry the Receiver? I just wanted to know if this was true, or if the guy was trying to milk more money from me?

A. This is possible, but at the same time, we don't have enough information to make that call.

Many home theater in a box speaker, like the ones that came with your Mom's DVD player, are 2 and even 3 ohm speakers. But most component surround sound receivers only accommodate 4 to 8 ohm speakers. Trying to connect the higher impedance speakers to the receiver can cause damage.

I would also like to point out that most component receivers are higher wattage than HTiB speakers like the ones you have. This means you can easily blow the speakers if you aren't super careful.

Congratulations on getting away from an HTiB and transitioning into a real receiver. This is a wise move. You will get better sound and longer enjoyment out of it. But I do recommend getting some real speakers whenever you can. Even if you just start off with a simple speaker package like these Yamaha speakers.

Another great place to find speakers is on Ebay and Craigslist. There is nothing wrong with a set of used speakers as long as they sound good. I literally have thousands of dollars invested in my living room and bedroom speakers alone, and most of them were used when I got them.
